Football fans in court after violence at Pompey cup game - 08/05/2010

Source : DailyEcho.co.uk

A DOZEN football supporters have admitted taking part in post-match clashes between rival Southampton and Portsmouth fans following their FA Cup tie in February.

The men, who principally come from Southampton, admitted an allegation of violent disorder outside St Mary’s Stadium on February 13.

Several of them had handed themselves in to the police following a front page article in the Daily Echo.

The charge relates to incidents that happened by Freeborn Motors in Britannia Road shortly after the game, in which Saints were beaten 4-1.

The men were Marcus Bevan, 22, of Warburton Road, Thornhill; Michael Byles, 24, of Aldermoor Road; James Koral, 20, of Haddon Drive, Eastleigh; Matthew Hinton, 19, of Hillside Avenue; Lewis Buckley, 24, of The Millburns, Romsey; James Smith, 34, of Brentwood Crescent; Xavier Whyte, 22, of Wilton Road; Kevin Medway, 28, of Grenville Court, Townhill Park; Cameron Jordan, 21, of Middle Road, Sholing; Stephen Jordan, 49, of Middle Road, Sholing; and Christopher Stevens, 46, of Stagbrake Close.

Another defendant, Alan Taylor, 20, of Wilton Road, Southampton, had admitted the same charge at an earlier hearing and they all had bail enlarged pending sentence at the city crown court on June 11.

Judge Gary Burrell QC, who was handed applications for football banning orders by the prosecution, told them: “Don’t take this adjournment as an indication of sentences. All options remain open, including immediate imprisonment.”

Two other men, Martyn Bishop, 42, of Wheatlands, Fareham, and Ross Phillips, 28, of Swift Road, Woolston, pleaded not guilty. They also had bail renewed for their trial in November.

● Police say they are working on a number of lines of inquiry following a second wave of pictures that were released of suspected hooligans.

Officers published more photos obtained from trawling through CCTV footage of scenes outside St Mary’s stadium following Saints’ defeat to Portsmouth in the FA Cup.

A Hampshire police spokesman said a number of names had been put forward.

No arrests have yet been made.

Injured riot policeman could lose other eye - 06/05/2010

Source : Croatian Times

A policeman who lost his eye when a firecracker chucked by a football hooligan exploded in his face is now in danger of losing his other eye.

Kristijan Trokter was hospitalised after the attack on Saturday when riots broke out between rival teams Dinamo and Hajduk.

Surgeons tried to save his eye but the explosion from the firecracker had been too severe.

Yesterday (Weds) doctors said an infection in the other eye could now mean Trokter loses that too if the infection continues to spread.

The soccer violence that erupted at Zagreb’s Maksimir stadium left 14 police officers and scores of fans injured. One fan was shot by police.

Speaking from his home yesterday, Trokter’s uncle said his nephew seemed more concerned about his fellow officers than about himself. "No one is writing about the other 14 policemen that were hurt, and he doesn't like that. That is just how he is."

There was violence in the old town centre of Düsseldorf, the capital of North Rhine-Westphalia, on the eve of the final second division match between Fortuna Düsseldorf and Hansa Rostock. Police arrested 160 fans after several fights broke out, with rioters attacking officers with glasses, bottles and fireworks. Fourteen policemen were injured.

A police spokesmen said that more than 90 percent of those arrested were Rostock fans. They had apparently travelled to Düsseldorf a day before the match in order to spend the night in local bars. Several had travelled by bus, while others had made the trip from Rostock by boat, arriving shortly before midnight.

The match has long been regarded as a risk by police, who had warned of possible violence in advance. Hundreds of officers are expected to be on duty around the stadium. Rostock will almost certainly be relegated to the third tier of German football for the first time in their history if they fail to win on Sunday.

Eight held after violence following Port Vale match

Eight Port Vale fans were arrested after trouble broke out at the end of the match against Shrewsbury.

Two officers were injured when Port Vale fans threw bricks at a police line outside the Vale Park ground on Hamil Road in Burslem, Stoke-on-Trent.

Earlier, fans invaded the pitch at full time following Saturday's 1-1 draw.

Staffordshire Police said there were no clashes with Shrewsbury supporters but an elderly woman caught up in the trouble was escorted to safety.

The eight are due to be questioned by police later.

Eight Port Vale supporters arrested after mob goes on post-match rampage

POLICE have launched an investigation after officers were attacked as a 250-strong mob went on the rampage following Port Vale's final game of the season.

Two officers were injured after being struck by bricks, and eight fans were arrested, as violence erupted in the centre of Burslem on Saturday evening.

Traffic was halted as yobs hurled bottles, bricks and cans at police after Vale's 1-1 draw with Shrewsbury Town.

Witnesses told The Sentinel that children were caught up in the violence and frightened shoppers had to be ushered through the melee.

One "very shaken" elderly woman was caught up in the trouble in Moorland Road before being rescued by officers, who then escorted her to the police station.

Businesses locked their doors as the mob moved through the Mother Town in a 30-minute stand-off with around 80 officers.

It is estimated that roughly 250 supporters – all thought to be Vale fans – were involved in the ugly scenes.

Linda Price, of Cobridge, had been to the game with 10-year-old grandson Jamie Price. The 54-year-old said: "It seemed to be just Vale fans taking on the police. They were chucking cans and bottles.

"I think it was simmering after Shrewsbury scored. I'm surprised at this and I was also surprised to see people drinking in the ground."

Another supporter, also named Linda Price, aged 43, from Middleport, said: "It was a really good atmosphere in the ground and it's a shame this has happened."

One passer-by, who asked not to be named, had called into Burslem following a shopping trip.

She said: "The Vale fans were running all over and a few bottles were thrown. It's not what you want to see at all."

Saturday's result meant Vale missed out on a play-off spot and face another season in League Two.

Waiter Ansar Miah, who works at The Great Moguls, in Market Place, locked the restaurant's doors during the chaos.

He said: "We saw cars having to stop because people were in the road."

A police spokesman said last night that the eight fans had been bailed until June as further inquiries take place.

Juve - Parma - 09/05/2010

Fans turn violent after record Juve loss

Juventus's 3-2 defeat at home to Parma on Sunday was marred by fan violence as the once proud Turin giants suffered a record 14th reverse in a Serie A season.

Perhaps the biggest surprise, though, is that in such a turbulent and disastrous season Juve have still managed to finish as high as seventh and qualified for Europe.

But that was no consolation to fans who fired smoke bombs at rival Parma supporters and forced the game to be delayed for five minutes while the two teams captains pleaded with their fans to behave.

Genoa - Milan AC - 09/05/2010

Source : Reuters

Genoa-Milan will be played behind closed doors

Genoa's Serie A home match with AC Milan on Sunday will be played behind closed doors after local authorities had a late change of heart about possible violence.

Italy's anti-hooligan body initially said Milan followers would be able to visit Genoa for the first time since a home fan was killed during trouble between the two sets of supporters 15 years ago.

However, Genoa's Web site said city officials had now decided to ban all fans following threats of potential violence from some supporters.

Southend - Stockport County - 01/05/2010

County fans stabbed in pub brawl after game

Two Stockport County fans were stabbed as violence flared after Saturday’s game at Southend.

It is believed the supporters were attacked with a broken bottle at the end of a night out in the Essex town on Sunday morning.

The two fans, a 29-year-old, from Stockport, and a 44-year-old who lives in Leicester, were left with a gashed face and chest respectively.

Essex Police insist there is nothing to suggest the attack was football-related, but supporters who travelled to Southend say it followed an altercation with rival fans. A group of around 20 County fans had been drinking in the Borough Hotel when fighting broke out.

Nicola Tiney, who runs the pub, said: “They were in here singing Stockport songs and they weren’t too bad. But then it all kicked off with glasses and stools being thrown and sofas overturned. I tried to stop it but there were too many. The fighting went on for five minutes and then the Stockport County fans left.”

Essex Police say three men then attacked two County fans on Marine Parade, Southend’s main drag. Both supporters were taken to Basildon Hospital where their injuries were treated.

The 44-year-old was kept in overnight, while the 29-year-old was released after treatment.

Ian Dooley, from the Stockport County Supporters’ Club, said: “All the people I have spoken to are shocked. There was nothing bad tempered in the ground or coming out of it but in the evening after a lot of beer you don’t know what can happen.

“There is no place for football violence, it is ridiculous. We went for a nice weekend by the sea and a fellow fan has been stabbed.”

Earlier, the game ended in a 2-1 victory for Southend but both sides have been relegated to League Two.

Gordon Taylor, safety officer at Edgeley Park, added: “There is no room in football for this sort of thing. We want families to come to a football match and leave having enjoyed it. We do our best to make sure it is eradicated but it is difficult.”

Police have warned troublemakers to stay away from this Saturday’s home game against Tranmere Rovers.

It is the final game of the season and an operation to combat any disorder has been planned. Fans have been advised to turn up earlier because of the road closures involved.

Hull City - Liverpool FC - 09/05/2010

Four arrests after trouble at Hull City v Liverpool match

Four men have been arrested following crowd trouble at Hull City's game against Liverpool at the weekend.

As the match drew to a close fans from both sides threw plastic drinks bottles at each other from the North and East Stands at the KC Stadium.

However, before the game kicked off two 17-year-olds were arrested on suspicion of affray in Walton Street, west Hull, and have been released on police bail pending further enquiries.

At the end of the match, which ended 0–0, two further men were arrested following a pitch invasion.

A 25-year-old was arrested for public disorder and given a fixed penalty notice.

A 36-year-old was also charged with using threatening words or behaviour to cause harassment alarm or distress and going onto the pitch.

He has been bailed to appear at Hull Magistrates' Court on May 19.

A Humberside Police spokesman said: "The vast majority of Hull City and Liverpool supporters attended the game yesterday to cheer on their team, however a small number of people came intent on causing trouble.

"Four of these people have been arrested and the police will ensure anyone else who tries to spoil watching football for the majority are dealt with quickly and effectively."
