Chelsea FC - Portsmouth FC - FA Cup - 15/05/2010

Source: english press (thanks to the sender)

Fans charged over disorder on FA Cup final day

Six football fans were arrested following violence in the city during Portsmouth's FA Cup final events.
Four men have been charged with public order offences after clashes with police in the city linked to Pompey's clash against Chelsea at Wembley Stadium.

Ricky Fowler, 23, from the Portsmouth area, was charged with assaulting a police officer at Portsmouth central police station after he was earlier arrested for affray at Clarence Esplanade in Southsea.

Ben Gladman, 22, of Hampshire Terrace, Southsea, was charged with a public order offence on Southsea Common on Saturday.

Shane Fewings, 22, of Medway Road, Hilsea, and Mark Phipps, 27, of Horsea Road, Hilsea, were arrested and charged with using threatening language or behaviour towards a bus driver in Kingston Road, Buckland.

All four were bailed to appear at Portsmouth Magistrates Court.

A 27-year-old man was arrested and given an £80 fixed penalty notice in Pier Road, Southsea, for being abusive towards and swearing at a police officer.

And a 23-year-old man was fined £80 for using threatening language or behaviour on Southsea Common.

Police have hailed the behaviour of most of the fans who enjoyed the match in pubs and bars and on Southsea Common.

Officers took video evidence of some fans on Southsea Common who watched the game on a 40ft big screen. More arrests could follow.

Southampton: The worrying rise in football violence at Saints - 17/05/2010

Source: english press (thanks to the sender)

While on the pitch Saints have had two of the most turbulent seasons in their history, off the pitch the team hailed as a family-friendly club have been involved in some of the most memorable games – but not for the right reasons.

Five times in the past 18 months big matches at St Mary’s have been marred by disgraceful scenes of violence not previously associated with the south coast club.

Police and football chiefs have become so worried by the growing situation – which they say is tarnishing the reputation of Southampton FC – that crowd trouble before and after games in the city has been raised at a national level.

Controlling the crowds

At the centre of this new wave of hooliganism is a “risk” group of about 60 so-called Southampton fans hell-bent on causing violence and disorder.

The Daily Echo can today reveal how alarmingly, most of them are schoolboys aged between 14 and 16 who appear to pride themselves on generating thuggery. They are a group more interested in what violence they can create by involving others, than what they can actually achieve themselves, say police.

One of the first and most significant matches where officers found themselves facing mass disorder was Saints’ defeat to Charlton Athletic last April, when the club was facing the threat of relegation having already been plunged into administration and set to receive a ten point deduction.

Having lost in the final few minutes, fans spilled out of the ground on to the concourse of the stadium where a swelling crowd of some 500 Saints fans gathered to goad opposition supporters.

Video footage – which can be seen online at dailyecho.co.uk – shows how police armed with batons and stewards quickly gathered to deal with the rising problem and keep the two sets of fans segregated.

Superintendent Rick Burrows, football commander in charge of overseeing the policing of Saints games, said: “What cannot be heard on that video is the clink of coins, pebbles and stones being hurled by Saints fans at Charlton fans who were being held against the wall of the stadium.”

Supt Burrows, who has spent 25 years overseeing the policing of football, describes the “pavement dancing” of scores of Saints fans – described by academics as “ritualised aggression” – who can be seen goading away fans and police, waving their arms in the air and shouting and swearing.

While the situation is brought under control, police can be seen ushering elderly Saints fans caught up in the melee away from the trouble.

Similar scenes of mass disorder have been repeated at Saints home games against Yeovil Town, Luton Town, Pompey, and most recently Swindon Town, where injuries were sustained, multiple arrests were made and many Saints fans brought before the courts to face charges.

Thugs set upon rival football fans in Southampton

But what is behind the growing trend of football disorder in Southampton and what is being done about it?

Next month Southampton police will unveil their new weapon in driving out the problem – in the form of the first ever football banning officer who will be based in the city.

Funded nationally, the new officer will work alongside Supt Burrows and the city’s football spotters and intelligence unit looking specifically at Southampton’s “risk” group.

Football banning orders have already shown their value – with 109 people in Hampshire having been slapped with the order that stops them attending any ground or match, in some cases for between three and five years.

Supt Burrows said: “It is one of our greatest tools to get this tiny minority, who are ruining it for the rest, away from the football scene.

“It’s incumbent on not just us, but the club and even the media to tackle these people and deal with them.

“I don’t want to make it sound like Southampton is a dangerous place for football to take place or for fans to visit – it certainly isn’t. There is no major problem, more a problem involving a tiny number of people that is rising, and we will do all that we can to tackle it.

“We have a very good relationship with the club and its stewards and work really well together and compliment each other to achieve the same goal. The club’s safety officer has been extremely supportive of our efforts to deal with this small minority.”

Supt Burrows believes problems of low-level hooliganism stem back some 18 months.

“During the last season and a half we have seen a steady increase in the number of cases of disorder, with more people going through the courts and more people receiving banning orders.

“Southampton is known as a family friendly club nationally, with a very good reputation with a history of little of no disorder, but that doesn’t stand up to scrutiny at the moment.

“There is a small number of what we term “risk group” who are spoiling the reputation of the club. They have over the past few months sought confrontation, often with individual fans or groups rather than large groups. They are bringing the reputation of Southampton down.

“You find that older fans then respond and get drawn back in to football related violence. The youth risk are more about what they can cause or generate, than what they can actually do themselves.”

So is it significant that as Saints found themselves sliding from the Premiership through the Championship to League One, the incidents of violence increased?

Supt Burrows said: “We saw a change of fan base, as any club does when it comes out of the Premiership. You don’t have that corporate environment that you get with clubs with big money. It’s just a personal opinion, but as clubs go in to a lower division the money disappears and the fan base alters. That then can, given the right circumstances, develop a risk group.

“There is no agreed definition of what a football hooligan is, but essentially I believe it’s what it says on the tin. They are interested in football, but whether at home or away they also seek to get involved in trouble.”

Supt Burrows draws on his vast experience combined with numerous academic studies and research papers into football crowds and hooligan trouble to explain his theory of how football disorder breaks out.

He points to tiers of groups, with a secondary group who will surround the core troublemakers and will join in with disorder if it happens.

The third group can be drawn in to violent scenes, but wouldn’t normally, while the fourth is the remaining vast majority of fans who will stand back and watch.

“There’s often no sense of right, that even though they are breaking the law, there is also something about loss of identity in a crowd. Hooliganism tends to go in cycles and it can flare up when something big happens such as the run up to the World Cup or the build up to a local derby game.

“At the centre of it you find people who are predominantly working class, who have experienced violence in the home or on the street as not only normal but it helps them bond as a group and some feel it gives them status.

“The incidents of hooliganism tend to be when they present themselves, rather than being organised well. I think a lot of it is ‘hold me back’ bravado and the pavement dancing we saw at Charlton, but it doesn’t take much to step over the line and that’s where we have to identify the catalysts and stop it escalating.

“I can sense it when disorder is about to happen, you can hear the tone of both sets of groups rise, you can feel it on the back of your neck. It takes something extra to spark it off and once it starts it can be very difficult to stop. The trick as a commander it ensuring you have the right people with the right skills to handle it.”

Aldershot - Rotherham United - Play Off - 14/05/2010

Source: forum (thanks to the sender)

Aldershot fans... ...

Firstly, credit to them on contributing to a great atmosphere. Not often you get them in the lower divisions.

However, massive grumble at them too. They had a lot of 12 year old nancy boys giving threats out throughout. Then as soon as we scored, we got pelted by various missiles. I got hit by half a bottle of Fanta on the cheek, and my brother has a lump on his head after being pelted by a coin.

Police just created a barrier between both sets of fans (even though there was a sufficient gap and gate separating) but seemed slow to react to the avalanche of missiles.

I wonder how many of these brave people would have done it without the protection of the old bill, and I wonder how many would travel to Don Valley on Wednesday?

Not many I'd imagine...

Cyprus police threaten football boycott - 18/05/2010

Source : famagusta-gazette.com

Four people have been remanded in police custody for three days, for their suspected involvement in football-related street violence over the weekend in Limassol and Larnaca.

The court procedure took place at Limassol General Hospital, where the 35 year old was being treated for bruising to his back.

One of the suspects lawyer claims that his client's injuries were sustained by a beating he took from the police's rapid response unit.

All four men deny any involvement in Saturday's rampage, while police are still on the look out for another three people.

Police have said that they are considering not policing matches and have proposed that the new season of football games be postponed until fans learn to behave.

The police chief said the situation will be evaluated and all those involved will be informed so that a joint decision can be made.

Meanwhile, the Cyprus FA responded to police comments noting that the root of the problem must be found.

PSG unveil plan to curb fan violence - 18/05/2010

Source : Reuters

Paris St Germain chairman Robin Leproux unveiled on Tuesday a plan to curb violence among rival groups of hardline supporters which led to the death of two fans in three years.

Leproux told a news conference the club would suspend the sale and renewal of season tickets for the 2010-2011 season.

Tickets will be named and seats in the Boulogne and Auteuil stands, strongholds of hardline supporter groups, will be allocated at random.

One section of each stand will be reserved for young players from the Paris area and another one for families.

"With two deaths in three years, we have reached a point of no return between the two stands and the situation is getting worse and worse," Leproux said.

"It's our duty to react. This plan is vital for the survival of the club."

The violence between the Boulogne and Auteuil groups of supporters reached its climax on Feb. 28 when a 38-year-old member of the Boulogne Kop was beaten up by Tribune d'Auteuil supporters and died in hospital a few days later.

The two groups had been involved in riots at home and away grounds since the 2005-06 season and in November 2006 a police officer shot and killed a member of the Boulogne Boys faction to protect an Israeli supporter under attack after a UEFA Cup match against Hapoel Tel Aviv.

The French government banned five PSG fan associations following the February riots. The club were forced to play games behind closed doors and the management decided to stop selling tickets for away games for the rest of the season.

Uruguayan police chief recovering from shooting

The police chief of Uruguayan capital Montevideo is recovering after being shot in the leg during clashes between rival fans following a 1-1 draw between Penarol and Nacional. The draw gave the league title to Penarol.

Walter Ferreira was hit by a bullet during the celebrations by Penarol supporters after the match. Police used rubber bullets, shields and night sticks to control hundreds of young fans who went on a rampage through the city. Assistant police chief Washington Curbelo said 230 people were detained.

Warning for Cardiff City fans travelling by train - 21/05/2010

Source : BBC News

Cardiff City fans travelling to Wembley by train are being warned they will risk missing the game if they misbehave.

On the eve of the Championship play-off final, transport police said anti-social or intimidating behaviour will not be tolerated.

Extra officers will be on duty on trains and at stations, and alcohol has been banned from services.

Up to 40,000 Cardiff fans are expected at the game against Blackpool.

Those travelling by road have already been warned of potential delays with plans to close a section of the M4 in Wiltshire on Saturday night forcing drivers to take a detour on the way home.

British Transport Police's sector commander for Wales, Ch Insp Sandra England, said: "Saturday promises to be a great day of football for Cardiff fans and our officers will be helping everyone to enjoy it, as well as ensuring fans travel to and from the game safely.

"Throughout the entire day, we'll have officers patrolling stations and on trains between south Wales and London and they will not tolerate intimidating or anti-social behaviour from those intent on spoiling the day for others.

"Trains are confined spaces and it can be a very intimidating experience for families and children when they find themselves in a carriage packed with boisterous fans.

"Of course, we want fans to have a good time and enjoy the big day and we appreciate the vast majority are always well behaved but we are warning anyone who steps out of line while travelling on the rail network will be dealt with by our officers.

"Not only are they risking a court appearance, they also risk missing out on seeing their club's biggest match for decades.

"Alcohol will be banned on both the forward and return train journeys and is banned on the Tube at all times."

First Great Western's head of security, Paula Durrans, said: "We are expecting high levels of fans to be travelling to the match with us and we want everyone to have a safe and pleasant journey.

"Although there will be extra trains to get fans to the match, we would advise people to book their seats in advance for the most comfortable journey possible."

Football supporters deny being hooligans - 20/05/2010

Source : Evening Chronicle

FIFTEEN suspected football hooligans have denied being part of a clash between Newcastle and Sunderland supporters.

A gang of Toon supporters allegedly waited for Black Cats fans at Newcastle Central Station in the hope of a fight.

Dozens of alleged yobs from both sides are accused of taking part in the ugly disturbance last August.

Now 15 Magpies supporters have appeared before a crown court judge to deny conspiracy to commit violent disorder.

A provisional trial date has been set for September, although some of the accused will be back in court next month for an update on the case.

Christopher Knox, prosecuting, said “This is one half of a matter involving organised football violence between supporters of Newcastle and supporters of Sunderland.

“The Sunderland matter is being pursued through the magistrates’ court and will be committed to this court.”

The Newcastle fans are accused of lying in wait for the Sunderland supporters, who were on their way back from a pre-season friendly in Scotland.

Among the allegations is that a smoke bomb was thrown.

Ian Chisholm, 47, of Westacres Crescent, Benwell; Lewis Comber, 18, of Elsdon Avenue, Seaton Delaval; Darren Fryer, 39, of Wallinfen, Leam Lane, Gateshead; Bryan Heron, 41, of Clayton Street West, Newcastle City Centre; Adam Ivison, 22, of Murrayfields, West Allotment, North Tyneside; Joseph Mattison, 51, of Acomb Street, Gateshead; Christopher Mustoe, 22, of John F Kennedy Estate, Washington; Adam Nesbit, 41, of Tribune Place, Gateshead; Noel Renton, 33, of Aydon Walk, West Denton; David Taylor, 21, of Sinclair Gardens, Seaton Delaval; Lee Wales, 23, of Prince Consort Road, Gateshead; Stephen Wales, 43, of Woodford, Gateshead, and David Cook, 22, of Cromer Gardens, Gosforth, all deny the charge.

Two youths, both 17, also denied the same charge.

A trial date has been set for September 20 and all of the defendants were released on bail.

Former Boca Juniors hooligans chief Rafa Di Zeo released from prison - 21/05/2010

Source : momento24.com

The former head of the Boca Juniors hooligans, Rafael Di Zeo, was again paroled. The decision was made by the Criminal Court of Appeals in split decision.

In 2005, Di Zeo had been sentenced to four years and three months in prison for aggravated coercion using weapons. The cause was opened in 1999, when “La Doce” (as they call Boca Juniors hooligans) had attacked savagely Chacarita fans during a friendly match in La Bombonera.

Rafael Di Zeo has three other cases pending in the courts. He is accused of being the head of a illicit association, incitement to damage (in the same match against Chacarita) and another for alleged links with Mario Segovia, “the king of ephedrine”, with whom he shared stayment in prison.

Wolves vs Everton: 14-year-old among nine arrested in Merseyside during police raids after Everton FC match violence - 20/05/2010

Source: Liverpool Echo (thanks to the sender)

NINE people - including a 14 year-old boy - were arrested this morning by Merseyside Police following an outbreak of violence at a football match in the West Midlands.

The group were arrested on suspicion of affray following separate raids at houses in Huyton, Prescot, Fazakerley, Toxteth, Old Swan, Crosby and Childwall.

The arrests follow an outbreak of violence after the Wolverhampton Wanderers v Everton Football Club match at the Molinuex Stadium on 27 March.

The nine arrested were: a 21-year-old man, from Huyton and Roby; a 17-year-old youth from Prescot; a 22-year-old man from Huyton; a 17-year-old youth from Fazakerley; a 19-year-old man from Toxteth; a 14-year-old youth from Old Swan; a 19-year-old man from Crosby; a 22 year-old man from Prescot and a 19-year-old man from Childwall.

Enquiries are on-going in the West Midlands area to trace other people who are believed to have been involved in the violence.

Assistant Chief Constable Colin Matthews said: "Merseyside Police and its partners will not tolerate football hooliganism and will take positive action against those who ruin the enjoyment of the game for others.

"This morning's arrests should be a deterrent for those who have been, or may become involved in football violence, which is completely unacceptable.

"I would like to take this opportunity to remind people who are planning to watch the World Cup games either in South Africa, or at home to enjoy the experience rather than spoil it."

Wolves and Albion hooligans get four-year ban - 22/05/2010

Source: http://www.expressandstar.com/news/2010/05/22/wolves-and-albion-hooligans-get-four-year-ban/

Six football hooligans who were embroiled in a violent pre-meditated clash between 100 rival West Bromwich Albion and Wolves fans have been banned from football matches for four years.

Michael Cartwright, David Parkes, John Ritchie, Shawn Roche, Harry Wall and Josh Hynd all pleaded guilty to using threatening words or behaviour following a confrontation in Wednesbury town centre, where rockets, bricks and glasses were thrown.

Judge Martin Walsh made football banning orders against all six men, stopping them from attending any matches or going to licensed premises in Wolverhampton, West Bromwich and Wednesbury on match days.

“This was an extremely serious incident of public disorder and there was an element of pre-planning on the day in question,” he said.

“It was beyond coincidence that two large groups of West Brom and Wolves supporters were both there by chance.”

The trouble flared after Birmingham’s home match against Wolves was called off due to bad weather on January 3 last year. On the same day Albion played Peterborough United at the Hawthorns. The confrontation was sparked as Wolves fans passed home through West Bromwich.

Wolverhampton Crown Court heard dozens of Albion fans poured out of The Bellwether pub as five Wolves fans were being spoken to by police. Judge Walsh said the men were there to “entice” Albion fans out of the pub.

Bottles and bricks were thrown and the trouble escalated when a group of 60 Wolves fans approached the pub.

Rockets were then fired from the West Bromwich Albion group and drivers were forced to stop in the road to avoid the missiles.

Father-of-one Cartwright, aged 41, a tree surgeon of Bealeys Avenue, Wednesfield, was sentenced to 18 weeks in prison suspended for two years, ordered to complete 200 hours unpaid work, pay £500 costs and given an 18 week curfew.

Truck driver Parkes, aged 44, of Griffiths Drive, Ashmore Park, Wolverhampton, was given 18 weeks in jail suspended for two years and ordered to complete 200 hours unpaid work and pay £500 costs. Ritchie, aged 29,of Carisbrooke Road, Friar Park, Wednesbury, was sentenced to 18 weeks in prison suspended for two years, given an 18 week curfew, 200 hours unpaid work and ordered to pay £250 costs.

Builder Roche, aged 21, of Jervoise Street, Carters Green, West Bromwich, was given a 16 week curfew, 160 hours unpaid work, a 16 week prison sentence suspended for two years and ordered to pay £250 costs.

Student Hynd, aged 18, of Willenhall Street, Darlaston, was jailed for 16 weeks, suspended for two years, given a 16 week curfew and 160 hours unpaid work.
Wall, aged 17, of Barland Close, Darlaston, who is also a student, was given a two-year community punishment and rehabilitation order, 16 week curfew and 160 hours unpaid work.

Speaking after the sentence, Pc Andrew Francis said: “It sends a clear message that we will aggressively pursue football hooligans.”

Football ban for hooligan as he is told to hand over his passport - 22/05/2010

Source: http://www.thisisderbyshire.co.uk/crime/Football-ban-hooligan-told-hand-passport/article-2202906-detail/article.html

A FOOTBALL hooligan who repeatedly incited violence between Derby County supporters and rival fans has been given a three-year ban from all games in England and Wales.

James Underwood, of Mackworth, must also hand over his passport to police so he cannot attend next month's World Cup after magistrates in Derby imposed the banning order.

It is the second time the 21-year-old, who associates himself with a gang of football thugs known as the Derby Lunatic Fringe, has been banned from matches.

He was given a similar ban in 2006 – when he was 17 – after being arrested and convicted of a public order offence related to football.

Underwood was asked, after the banning order was imposed yesterday at Southern Derbyshire Magistrates' Court, why he caused trouble.

He said: "I hold my hands up. I try and stop doing it but it's difficult – I can't tell you why I do it."

Derbyshire police put together a file of information on Underwood, of Cricklewood Road, which outlined the trouble he had been involved in.

It included being part of a group of Derby County fans that was involved in a ruckus with rival Nottingham Forest supporters in September 2007.

In that brawl, chairs and bottles were thrown between the warring groups. He was again involved in trouble with Forest fans in January and September 2009.

Underwood was also involved in violence or disorder between Derby County fans and groups of Sheffield Wednesday supporters in November 2008 and October 2009; Everton fans in April 2009; and Leicester City followers in October 2009. The order imposed means Underwood cannot attend any football games until at least May 2013.

PC Paul Russell, a football intelligence officer for Derbyshire police, told the court: "Nine times out of ten, when banning orders are imposed, the people who are subject to them will change their ways.

"But someone like James, who hangs about in that social group and has maintained contact with them, his behaviour has not changed."

Football intelligence officer PC Alan Guy was involved in the prosecution of Derby County and Nottingham Forest fans who fought in Derby city centre in January last year. He was also in court and said he was "pleased" that the magistrates had listened to officers' concerns.

"It will definitely assist us in trying to prevent trouble," he said.

Partizan: Hooligan group leader arrested - 22/05/2010

Source: http://www.b92.net/eng/news/crimes-article.php?yyyy=2010&mm=05&dd=22&nav_id=67301

BELGRADE -- Partizan hooligan group leader Miloš Radisavljević has been arrested under the suspicion of endangering the safety of B92 journalist Brankica Stanković.

A warrant was issued for his arrested because of an incident that occurred at a football match at which threats against the journalist were chanted.

The fans were chanting “You are poisonous like a snake, you will end up like Ćuruvija," referring to investigative reporter Slavko Ćuruvija who was killed in 1999.

The Partizan supporters were also kicking and stabbing a plastic doll in the likeness of Stanković.

Police arrested Radisavljević after consultations with the public prosecution.

“After consultations with the primary public prosecution of Belgrade, Miloš Radisavljević, one of the leaders of the Alkatraz hooligan group of Partizan supporters was arrested because under the suspicion that he committed the crime of endangering the safety of B92 journalist Brankica Stanković at a match on December 16, 2009,” Chief of the Sector for Public Order and Peace of the Belgrade Police Administration, Milan Stanić, told B92.

Radisavljević was seen at a football match on May 8 between Partizan and Red Star at Partizan stadium.

Police Director Milorad Veljović said at the time that police noticed Radisavljević but had no grounds for arresting him.

CCTV photos of football disorder released - 23/05/2010

Source: http://www.lynnnews.co.uk/news/national/cctv_photos_of_football_disorder_released_1_637418

Police have released CCTV images of people they want to speak to about a disorder between rival football fans in Huddersfield last month.

Kirklees Police said they had already arrested 16 people in connection with the incident, which happened after a League One game between Huddersfield Town and Millwall on April 16.

Fighting broke out about 7pm on Wakefield Road, in the Waterloo area of the city, and police warned that others involved the violence would not be ignored.

Eight people from Huddersfield and eight from Millwall are currently on bail.

Kirklees Detective Inspector Jim Griffiths said: "Some of those taking part in the disorder at Waterloo on 16 April may think that their involvement has gone unnoticed. I can assure them that this is certainly not the case.

"We are actively pursuing those responsible and we have been viewing CCTV from the time of the incident. Today (Friday) we are releasing a number of images from that footage of people we would like to speak to in connection with the incident.

"We simply want to know who these people in the photographs are. If you recognise them, please let us know. Likewise, if you see yourself in the poster, contact your nearest police station immediately.

"There is no place for disorder of any kind in Kirklees and anyone who has been involved in this type of offence should be warned that we could be knocking on your door next."

Anyone with information is asked to call Det Con Doyle at Huddersfield CID on 01484 436664 or through Crimestoppers in confidence on 0800 555 111.
