The Heysel Disaster – 25 Years On - 29/05/2010

Source : Goal.com

May 29, 1985 will forever remain in the memories of football fans affiliated with Liverpool and Juventus. As the clubs prepared for the European Cup final in the Heysel Stadium in Brussels, Belgium, fights broke out in the stands and the ensuing violence claimed the lives of 39 fans, as well as leaving over 600 injured.

The late sports journalist Arthur Hopcraft describes the way in which fans massed within football stadia in The Football Man, which give some sense to the conditions at Heysel 17 years later. “They are more evocative of the wonder of childhood than even old comic-strips are. They are hideously uncomfortable. The steps are as greasy as a school playground lavatory in the rain. The air is rancid with beer, onions, belching and worse. The language is a gross purple of obscenity. In this incomparable entanglement of bodies lies the heart of the fan’s commitment to football.”

Hopcraft’s words came at a time when hooliganism was on the increase in England. Leeds United fans attacked Bayern Munich supporters in the 1975 European Cup final, while there was violence between Roma and Liverpool fans before and after the European Cup final nine years later; former Reds player Kenny Dalglish recollects that “Liverpool fans suffered horrendous abuse at the hands of Italian fans”. There were further incidents in 1985 involving Millwall, Luton Town, Leeds and Birmingham City.

The problems within English football were well known in the build-up to the final, but blame has also been laid at UEFA’s door for the Heysel disaster as the stadium was archaic and far from fit to host the final. Liverpool asked UEFA to use another stadium on grounds of safety, but the request was rejected. Instead, a portion of the ground was cordoned off as a ‘neutral’ section – Section Z. Few police were posted near the temporary dividing fence between Section Z and Liverpool fans in Section Y as the authorities believed that the neutral fans would act as a buffer.

The scenario could not have been further from reality. The Times reported “the Belgian football union had taken the decision to sell the tickets, rather than allocate them to the two finalist clubs to increase its profits from the game.” These fell into the hands of ticket touts, who sold the majority of the ‘neutral’ tickets to Italian expatriates.

By seven o’clock, the two sets of fans were almost side by side. There was no ‘buffer’ between them. The majority of the 60,000 fans in the stadium had been drinking for much of the day. Eye witnesses recall Bianconeri fans began to launch missiles into the Liverpool sections – stones from the dilapidated terracing and pieces of crumbling steps were launched into the mass of supporters. As kick-off approached, the English fans retaliated.

The Liverpool supporters charged towards the Italians and broke through the thin chicken-wire fence that divided the two sets of fans, and in the midst of the fighting many of those in the neutral section were forced back towards the other Juventini. They were crushed against a concrete wall at the opposite end of the enclosure; some tried to scale the wall and jump over to escape the violence. The poorly constructed and antiquated wall collapsed onto the fans on the opposite side under the pressure.

32 Italians, four Belgians, two French people and one Northern Irish man were killed, crushed by the collapsing wall or trampled by other supporters attempting to escape.

Andrea Lorentini recently told of his father, who went to the match. “My father Roberto was a medic and at a certain point of the fight he noticed a young man who was wounded,” Andrea says.

“He went over to carry out CPR on him and while doing that he was caught up in the fighting of the English fans who were fueled by alcohol. My grandfather, Otello, meanwhile, managed to save himself and was reunited with his two nephews. Not long afterwards, they tragically found Roberto, who was dead.”

Over 600 more were injured. In the chaos, more Italians attempted to reach the Liverpool fans to enact retribution, unaware of the tragedy that was unfolding. One Italian was reported to have fired a gun, though it was later revealed to be a starting pistol. Phil Neal made a plea for calm over the PA system and the game eventually went ahead, with the authorities desperate not to antagonize the situation by postponing the fixture. “I have absolutely no recollection of the match," Neal reflected. "As soon as we heard people had died we lost all interest in the match.”

Kenny Dalglish added, “We saw the Italian fans crying, and they were banging on the side of our bus when we left the hotel.”

“If this is what football has become, let it die,” read L’Equipe after the match. Het Nieuwsblad headlined with “Police powerless against British alcoholics”, but the Corriere della Sera deplored, “The culpable impotence of the police.” UEFA’s official observer Gunter Schneider remarked, “Only the English fans were responsible. Of that there is no doubt.”

27 people were arrested for manslaughter by the British police in the aftermath, 14 of whom were convicted. A blanket ban fell on English clubs’ participation in European competitions for five years, while Liverpool had to serve an extra year’s ban. Heysel was never used for a football match again until it was demolished and rebuilt a decade later. “That day we were all victims,” Ian Rush mused. “That day changed football forever.”

No official inquiry was ever undertaken. UEFA were not questioned about their decision to stage the European Cup final at the aging venue, nor were the Belgian authorities queried on their policing or the ticketing allocation.

Efforts were made to repair relations between the two clubs when they met in 2005, with a number of gestures commemorating the event performed prior to the match at Anfield. Ian Rush and Michel Platini carried a banner that bore the message, 'In Memory and Friendship': In Memoria e Amicizia. In addition, home fans held up placards that formed the word ‘Amicizia’. Most of the travelling fans applauded the gesture, though others turned their backs on it. 25 years on, a plaque has been unveiled outside Anfield’s Centenary Stand to commemorate the deaths of the 39 fans at Heysel.

Handball Final Four postponed

The Final Four games in the men's handball cup were postponed indefinitely by Greek authorities on Saturday, after scenes of runaway violence between rival supporters of AEK, Athens and PAOK, Thessaloniki in Lamia. The two sides had been scheduled to play a semi-final in the city later on Saturday.

In an announcement, Sports General Secretary Panagiotis Bitsaksis said that all four games in the final had been indefinitely postoned at the recommendation of the Greek Police because of the violent incidents, that continued with even greater intensity at the city's indoor stadium.

Bitsaksis said that he had invited the board of the Handball Federation to his office on Monday to discuss the issue and the measures that need to be taken.

According to reports coming in on Saturday evening, the city was still in an uproar as police pursued some 200 AEK supporters through the streets after the incidents at Lamia's indoor stadium.

A further nine people, among them a police officer, were taken to Lamia hospital with injuries caused by items thrown at the stadium. Six PAOK supporters and 10 AEK supporters were arrested and this made the climate even more explosive, with the enraged hooligans running rampage through a local supermarket, from which they looted food.

The incidents have caused extensive damage to the city's indoor stadium, where the rival team supporters initially attacked each other using flares, then started ripping up the seats and throwing them at each other. A group also broke into the stadium toilets and smashed up the tiles to use as missiles, causing the situation to spin even further out of control and prompting authorities to evacuate the stadium and cancel the games.

The incidents had begun early on Saturday morning, while the city's scant police force had proved unable to contain the hundreds of rival supporters that had poured into Lamia, so that an early morning brawl that left two injured and needing hospitalisation had escalated into an all-out 'war' by later the same day.

Local residents going about their business were forced to look on in horror as rival hooligans threw petrol bombs, kiosks in the centre of the city went up in flames and streets were choked with tear gas and flash grenades used by embattled police to disperse the combatants.

Another seven people had to be taken to hospital, six of them team supporters injured in the fray and one passer-by that was overcome by acute discomfort because of the tear gas. According to doctors, all the injuries are minor.

During the incidents at around 8:00 on Saturday morning, some 100 supporters of PAOK, Thessaloniki had descended on a clubhouse for Athens-based AEK supporters in central Lamia, attacking two people that were there with knives and setting it on fire.

Football fan jailed after post-match violence - 29/05/2010

Source : independent.co.uk

A football fan has been given a 10-month prison sentence following post-match clashes in which brooms and mops were hurled at police.

The trouble flared up after a non-league match between Luton Town and York City on May 3.

Anders Johansen, 37, from Drobak, Norway, pleaded guilty to a public order offence earlier this month.

He was jailed for one count of violent disorder at Luton Crown Court yesterday, a court official said.

Luton supporters invaded the pitch following their team's 1-0 defeat by York in the Blue Square Premier League semi-final play-off, Bedfordshire Police said.

Missiles including coins were thrown at York's players and riot police were called in after the game at the Hatters' home ground, Kenilworth Road.

Stewards and police had to help York's players escape to the dressing rooms, via the away end.

The violence spilled over to nearby Dunstable Road, where a small number of fans attacked police with mops and brooms they found outside a DIY store.

Six other people, who were arrested on suspicion of public order and drunk and disorderly offences, were released on bail pending further inquiries.

No fans were believed to be seriously hurt in the incident but a number of police officers received minor injuries.

Old Firm fans go off the rails, CELTIC AND RANGERS SUPPORTERS TOP TRAIN SHAME LEAGUE - 30/05/2010

Source : newsoftheworld.co.uk

THUGS from the Old Firm topped the league of shame for football violence and sectarian crimes on Scotland's trains last season.

And the latest British Transport Police figures show Celtic fans were the worst offenders.

The yobs were arrested for a string of sectarian, alcohol-related and violent offences over the 2009-10 SPL season.

Last night a BTP source said: "Old Firm fans are without doubt the worst among fans when it comes to starting football-related trouble.

"Violence and loutish behaviour sadly goes along with games... on both sides of the divide."

Out of 48 arrests, 20 were Hoops fans while 10 Rangers fans were lifted.

Motherwell fans were the next worst offenders, with seven arrests on Scotland's railways.

Four Hamilton Accies fans were arrested for breach of the peace on August 15 last year.

The roll of shame also included two Hibs fans. A supporter of Morton, another of St Mirren, a Hearts fan and just one member of the Tartan Army were also picked up. Even a follower of Ayrshire juniors side, Irvine Meadow, was nabbed after a match.

Of the 20 Celtic arrests, 11 came on the last day of the season at Glasgow's Queen Street Station for sectarian offences - allegedly belting out a medley of bigoted chants on the Edinburgh to Glasgow train service.

The Celtic fans had been drinking after the SPL clash between Hearts and Celtic at Tynecastle on May 9, which the Bhoys won 2-1. A BTP spokesman said: "After the match 11 people were arrested on a train coming back to Glasgow.

"These Celtic fans were arrested for sectarian offences allegedly committed on the train.

"Alcohol was also a major factor in this incident."

In another incident a drunken Hoops fan was busted for urinating in a Glasgow railway station on March 27.

And an Aberdeen fan was allegedly set on FIRE by a Hibs fan. The Dons devotee was dressed up as a sheep and travelling home on the Edinburgh to Aberdeen train last Halloween when he caught alight.

We told in March how Scotland's top transport cop, Chief Superintendent Ellie Bird, vowed to wipe out sectarianism and hate crimes from Scotland's railways.

BTP say they are pleased with the latest figures, which mark a reduction in crime on the railways over the last season. There were 64 arrests for football disorder during the 2008-9 season.

A British Transport Police spokesman said: "This is quite a reduction on the previous season's arrests.

"It's because our message is getting across and the vast majority of football fans are well behaved.

"And we have the support of SPL clubs in taking action against fans who shame their teams and let down their fellow supporters."

Football hooligan to surrender passports by Tuesday - 31/05/2010

Source : BBC News

Convicted football hooligans must surrender their passports by Tuesday to stop them travelling to the World Cup in South Africa.

Individuals in England and Wales with football banning orders must hand over their documents at police stations.

They will also have to report to the police on every England match day during the tournament.

Passports will be returned on Sunday 11 July, when the World Cup finishes.

The deadline comes as a South African police official warned convicted UK hooligans not to travel to the country.

South African police minister Nathi Mthethwa said his country's officials were working closely with British police to prevent hooligans reaching Africa's first World Cup.

"We really will not take any nonsense this time around," he said.

"This commitment by the UK authorities [to ban hooligans] is not just a commitment - it is something concrete."

Assistant Chief Constable Dave Thompson, head of the domestic World Cup operation said hooliganism was "much less of a problem than in the past".

He added: "Football banning orders have been very successful, with less than 10% of those who are issued with banning orders re-offending.

"There are however a small minority of people who engage in football related violence and disorder, causing a risk to the safety of the vast majority of law abiding football supporters.

"Acpo [Association of Chief Police Officers] and police forces have been working closely with the CPS to tackle football-related violence and hooliganism and to identify such individuals and bring them to justice."

Aberdeen leads the way in football poll of shame - 22/05/2010

Source: http://www.pressandjournal.co.uk/Article.aspx/1748745?UserKey=#ixzz0orrhHOog (thanks to the sender)

It is second to glasgow in number of banning orders

The Scottish Government’s ultimate sanction for violence, bigotry and swearing at football matches has been used to ban just 84 fans in four years.

Aberdeen is second only to Glasgow in football’s league of shame, according to figures released under freedom of information legislation.

Football Banning Orders were introduced in Scotland in 2006, to try to rid the game of hooliganism and bigotry. They can bar supporters from attending all matches in Scotland, the rest of the UK and abroad for up to 10 years.

But with fewer than 100 issued in four years, there is concern that bad behaviour is being ignored. Glasgow Sheriff Court has issued 32 FBOs since their introduction.

Surprisingly, more FBOs were issued in Aberdeen than in Edinburgh, Dundee and Inverness put together.

Seventeen fans were banned at Aberdeen Sheriff Court, compared with just five in Scotland’s capital. Nine were issued in Dundee, while just two were needed in Inverness and Perth.

They were seen as a milestone for the government, which said “no one should be subjected to intolerance, prejudice or violence in 21st-century Scotland”.

Labour’s shadow justice secretary Richard Baker – a member of the administration that introduced FBOs – was stunned at how little they had been used.

He said: “I find it very hard to believe that there have been just 84 incidents of violence, bigotry or swearing at Scottish football grounds in four years. I will be taking this up with the government.”

The Scottish Government confirmed it is looking at ways to improve the system.

A spokesman said: “Football Banning Orders send out an important message that violent behaviour and abusive language will not be tolerated in or around Scotland’s football grounds.

“Minister for Community Safety Fergus Ewing announced last November that a full evaluation of FBOs would take place, with a remit to consider changes that could enhance the operation of the current system.

“The terms of the evaluation have been agreed by the Football Banning Monitoring Group which is expected to report by the year’s end.”

Millwall FC - Swindon Town - Play off - 29/05/2010

SWINDON AT WEMBLEY: Anger at some Millwall fans' behaviour

SWINDON Town fans have claimed that one of their coaches was attacked by a few Millwall fans leaving Wembley Stadium on Saturday evening.

Others have questioned the lack of policing outside Wembley Park Tube station before the match where they said they faced a gauntlet of blue-shirted Millwall fans, some of whom shouted abuse at the Town supporters.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said there were no arrests at the ground but the British Transport Police (BTP) arrested a number of Swindon Town fans returning home to Wiltshire on the train on Saturday night.

However, in Swindon itself, police reported there were no arrests made in the town centre in relation to the football. Police said that fans had behaved well watching the game from pubs and bars, and there were no reports of trouble.

In north west London, Honda worker Duane Castleman, claimed that some Millwall fans targeted their coach as it was leaving Wembley.

“Millwall fans threw beer cans at our coach on the way out, opening coach doors and there was no police on site. Young kids on the coach were starting to get upset.”

Duane, 30, from Marlborough, said that Millwall fans were trying to get into the coach in front by the rear emergency exit window.

“Our driver was getting really worried about it, “ he said.

“As we drove past police, he shouted at them to get down to the car park to get it sorted. It was quite frightening.”

One Swindon fan, posting on the Adver website, said: “I had to witness a group of obviously drunk, foul-mouthed Millwall supporters, try to rip our coach door off, before kicking and scratching the coach whilst continuing to regale us with their brand of the English language.”

The fan, posting under the name of dosomethingmutley, wrote: “No police or stewards were present and the whole organisation outside our showpiece stadium was atrocious.”

A fan from Cirencester, who took his wife and three children to the game, said his day was spoiled by the abuse they received at Wembley Park before the game.

“Whose idea was it to let them congregate in the tunnel outside the Tube station before the match?” he asked, posting under the screen name of Aggie Neighbour.

“I had to squeeze through with my wife and three kids. My 15-year-old was snarled at, I had my red and white hat removed and thrown into the pack and then had some Millwall lowlife stick his face into mine.

“I am a grey-haired, overweight 50-year-old, not exactly your average football hooligan type. There was no police to be seen anywhere then. It spoilt my day before it had started.”

Dutch-based Swindon fan Ryan Barrett, said it was only a minority of Millwall fans that spoiled things.

“When we got to Wembley there were Millwall fans waiting under the bridge on our side of the stadium,” he said.

“Some were being intimidating but I didn’t see any actual violence. The police did a really good job. They were there in force.”

A Cambridge-based Swindon fan posted on the Adver website that some Millwall supporters taunted their Wiltshire rivals after the match. “Sadly, some Millwall fans took it upon themselves to ruin the day for everyone,” posted Angrydan.

“A bunch of them were waiting outside the Swindon end a minute after the final whistle, looking to pick fights.

“It’s sad really.”

A spokesman for the Metropolitan Police, which is responsible for order in and around Wembley, said some drunken fans were gathered at the stadium and the tube station.

But he said there were no arrests at the ground described the event as ‘relatively quiet’.

“Every football match has its challenges but I am not aware of any significant problems with this match,” he said.

The British Transport Police, which had officers on the trains and at the stations, made an ‘unusual’ number of arrests of Swindon fans, although the exact number was not yet known yesterday.

The force always applies to magistrates to enforce football banning orders to anyone arrested going to or from a football match which prevents them for attending games for a set period.

Four men – thought to be Swindon supporters – were arrested following a fight on a train bound from London to Swindon on Saturday evening at about 8.15pm.

Two were charged with being drunk and disorderly and the others were each charged with a public order offence.

At Swindon station in the early hours of yesterday morning, a man, thought to be a Swindon fan, was also seen hanging out of a train window shouting abuse.

A 24-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly and later charged with the offence Inspector Neil Ketley, of the BTP, said: “We don’t normally have many issues with Swindon fans travelling and this is an unusual amount of arrests.”

Swindon police drafted in extra officers, including some from the county division, to provide a visible presence in the town centre as fans returned home.

Officers were posted to both the bus and coach stations, as well as pubs and areas where fans are known to congregate, including the bottom of town and Old Town.

PC James Neighbour, football intelligence officer for Swindon, who went to the match to help identify potential troublemakers, said: “On the whole, Swindon Town fans are good supporters of their club and behave in an appropriate manner.

“With any large number of people, you always get a percentage who act in an anti-social manner but the police have an idea who these people are and can control them.”
