O.Marseille - Paris SG - 20/11/2009

Four Marseille supporters arrested ahead of clash with PSG in the French league

Police say four Marseille supporters have been arrested ahead of the team's match against fierce rival Paris Saint-Germain in the French league.

Eighth-placed Marseille hosts PSG at the Velodrome stadium on Friday amid security fears over a game postponed last month because of an outbreak of swine flu in the Paris team.

Several dozen Marseille supporters shouted insults at the PSG fans when they arrived in the nearby town of Aubagne by a special chartered train in the afternoon.

Police said the four arrested fans caused damage near the train station.

Last month, the teams' fans fought in downtown Marseille after the postponement was announced about six hours before kickoff.

Nearly a dozen people were injured in the skirmishes.

Arrests ahead of PSG-Marseille encounter

Police made 15 arrests on Friday ahead of the rescheduled French top flight game between Marseille and Paris Saint-Germain, a police source said.

Eleven of the people arrested were Marseille fans, nine of whom were detained for throwing projectiles at the PSG team bus while another two home fans were arrested for unruly behaviour.

Two away fans were also detained after windows were broken as buses converged on the Stade Velodrome.

The original match was postponed at short notice on October 25 after an outbreak of swine flu at the Parisian club.

Some 1200 police were mobilised to keep order at a match which has traditionally been classed as high-risk given the longstanding fierce rivalry between two of the biggest clubs in France.

Egyptian football fans riot against Algeria - 20/11/2009

Source : AP

Egyptian football fans burned Algerian flags and rioted outside the Algerian Embassy in Cairo, smashing cars and shop windows, in an escalating row between the two countries over a bitter World Cup rivalry.

Egyptian fans — and the country's media — have been thrown into a frenzy over reports that Algerians attacked and injured Egyptians after their countries' teams squared off in a World Cup qualifier in the Sudanese capital, Khartoum, this week. Algeria won the game 1-0, giving them a spot in the 2010 Cup in South Africa.

Several hundred Egyptian fans rampaged in the streets around the Algerian Embassy overnight into the early hours Friday, scuffling with black-uniformed riot police. It began as a protest, with demonstrators beating drums, shooting jets of flame from aerosol cans and shouting obscenities and slogans against Algerians.

When riot police prevented them from getting close to the embassy, the demonstrators threw stones, smashed nearby cars and windows of shops and ransacked a gas station. Some fans, unable to reach the Algerians, pelted the nearby Indian Embassy with stones. The Interior Ministry said 11 police and 24 protesters were injured, 20 people arrested and 15 vehicles damaged.

During the day Friday, scattered groups of dozens of fans shouted and burned flags near the embassy, kept from the building by multiple lines of riot police with helmets and batons.

In a country where political demonstrations are rare and heavily suppressed by security forces, Egypt's soccer protests were an unusual show of anger in the streets.

The upscale neighborhood where the embassy is located, Zamalek, is on an island in the Nile that is home to many embassies, schools, expatriates and foreign university students.

The rivalry has brought violence from both sides the past week.

Wednesday's match in Khartoum was a playoff after Egypt beat Algeria 2-0 Saturday in Cairo. Before Saturday's game, Egyptian fans pelted a bus carrying the Algerian team with stones and injured three players. Afterward, 32 people were injured in clashes between Egyptian and Algerian fans. Algerians ransacked offices of Egyptian companies in Algiers.

Following Algeria's win, Egyptian fans were attacked in Khartoum. Protests have erupted outside the Algerian Embassy in Khartoum repeatedly since.

Egyptian papers have been running front-page stories with pictures of injured fans and headlines trumpeting Algerian attacks on Egyptians in Khartoum. TV shows have also been drumming up fury, airing amateur mobile phone videos of what appear to be Algerian soccer fans wielding knives and chanting anti-Egyptian slogans.

Speaking to a TV news program, Mohammed Fouad, a popular Egyptian singer who attended the Khartoum match, called the violence afterward a "bloodbath."

"If the Jews were beating us, even they wouldn't have done it so savagely," he said.

President Hosni Mubarak's eldest son, Alaa, who also attended the Khartoum match, said Egypt should "take a stance" and respond to the Algerians' "terror, hostility."

Alaa Mubarak — a businessman who unlike his politically prominent younger brother, Gamal, rarely speaks publicly — told Egyptian television, "It is impossible that we as Egyptians take this, we have to stand up and say 'enough.'"

"When you insult my dignity ... I will beat you on the head," he said.

On Thursday, Egypt's Foreign Ministry summoned Algeria's ambassador in Cairo to express "extreme dismay" over the attacks in Khartoum. Egypt's ambassador in Algiers, Abdul-Aziz Seif al-Nasr, was instructed to return to Egypt for consultations, a ministry statement said.

The Egyptian Football Federation even threatened on Thursday to withdraw from international play to protest the treatment of Egyptian fans in Sudan.

"We call on FIFA to take a serious stance to restore order to the world of football," the federation said in a statement.

UEFA overturn Dinamo Zagreb points penalty - 20/11/2009

Source : AFP

Croatian champions Dinamo Zagreb on Friday had their Europa League points deduction replaced with a 75,000 euros fine and a three-year suspended ban from European competition.

European governing body UEFA had initially docked Dinamo three points following "serious crowd disturbances" involving their fans during a Europa League game at Romanian side FC Timisoara on October 1.

"After examining the written submission of both parties, the chairman of the Appeals Body complied with the identical request submitted by Dinamo Zagreb and the UEFA Disciplinary Inspector, and decided to replace the initial three-point deduction from the Croatian club with a 75,000 euros fine plus Dinamo's disqualification from all UEFA competitions for a probationary period of three years," read a statement on the UEFA website.

Dinamo had also been banned from allowing fans into their stadium for their next two Europa League home games, against Ajax on November 5 and Timisoara on December 17, and that sanction has been upheld.

The decision moves Dinamo off the bottom of Group A and above Timisoara, but they trail Ajax and Anderlecht by five points with two games remaining and only the top two sides in each group qualify for the next stage.

Serbian police say they have arrested another suspect in the fatal attack on a French football fan in Belgrade two months ago.

Police say a 39-year-old man identified only as Dejan S. from Belgrade is suspected of taking part in the killing of French citizen Brice Taton.

Taton was among a group of Toulouse fans who were attacked by Partizan Belgrade hooligans before a Europa League match between the teams in September. Taton was badly injured in the attack and died several days later in a Belgrade hospital.

Serbian authorities have arrested 11 suspects in the attack and moved to ban violent soccer fan groups.

Serbian authorities don't release the full last name of criminal suspects.

FC Basel - FC Zürich - Cup - 20/11/2009

Source : swissinfo.ch + stuttgarter-nachrichten.de

Hooligan attacks overshadow match

Around 25 people were injured in hooligan violence during a match in Basel on Friday evening between the hometown club and FC Zurich.

The Basel justice authorities said the violence initiated by Zurich fans had reached new lows.

Before the match, around 200 Zurich fans ripped out seats, and demolished refreshment stands and toilets, the Basel City justice and police department said.

Most of the injured were people who had travelled from Zurich to the match and were standing outside the stadium when they were hit by objects thrown down from the stands by other Zurich supporters.

Following the match, Basel hooligans attempted to attack fans from the rival city as well as security personnel. Two people were hospitalised, and two others were arrested.

Switzerland has been affected by football hooliganism since the start of the 1980s.

There have been serious incidents at regular intervals, affecting all almost all teams in the top division despite tougher measures introduced by the Swiss Football League in 2006.

Clubs must take the responsibility for their fans when they play away games, meaning they have to organise the ticket sales for their sections of the away stadium themselves.

The guest club also has to record the personal details of their fans as well as provide somebody from the club to accompany the supporters and note violent incidents.

The Swiss parliament also approved a raft of anti-hooligan measures that are expected to come into force from January in all cantons that ratify them.

They included a national hooligan database, travel restrictions for known troublemakers, stadia bans and 24hr preventive custody.

Apoel Nicosia - Anorthosis Famagusta - 21/11/2009

Source : Cyprus Mail

Afternoon football games to curb hooliganism

HIGH-RISK football games will from now on be held in the afternoon in a bid to curb violence, officials said yesterday.

The decision concerning which games are high-risk will be taken jointly by the police and football authorities, Cyprus Football Association vice chairman Andreas Santis said.

The decision will depend on the importance of the game and conditions at the time.

“I think that at least for the immediate future, critical games will be played in the afternoon,” Santis said.

Today’s derby between APOEL of Nicosia and Anorthosis Famagusta will be held in the afternoon.

Police believes the darkness may be conducive to acts of violence as perpetrators are harder to identify and arrested.

Police Chief Michalis Papageorgiou welcomed the measures announced by the CFA but said more were necessary to tackle hooliganism.

One measure is that fans will be required to give their identity card number when buying match tickets, and display their identity card at the entrance.

The measure will apply for two upcoming games this weekend that are billed as high-risk and for all fixtures thereafter.

It all follows the critical injury of a 20-year-old APOEL fan during clashes last Sunday between supporters of Nicosia archrivals Omonia and APOEL.

The violence took place at futsal grounds just outside Nicosia

The two teams were not even playing against each other.

Police have arrested two more youths, aged 20 and 26, in connection with Sunday’s violence.

Three others have been remanded on suspicion of attempted murder, while two have been charged with rioting and subsequently released.

Meanwhile the basketball federation (CBF) said games will go ahead as scheduled.

Authorities had refused to police basketball games held in arenas with fire-safety shortcomings.

Police earlier this year inspected various arenas and handed over a list of improvement work that had to be done in order for the venues to meet the legal requirements.

Despite a lot of work being done, some venues still did not meet requirements, forcing authorities to refuse provision of security.

The matter has been settled following a fresh inspection from the police and the fire service who allowed use of the arenas.

A statement by the CBF said improvement work has not been fully completed but will be in 15 days.

Football thugs admit UEFA violence - 20/11/2009

Source: http://www.thevisitor.co.uk/manchester/Football-thugs-admit-UEFA-violence.5845008.jp

Nine football fans - including two from Lancashire - pleaded guilty to violence following Glasgow Rangers' Uefa Cup final defeat in Manchester last year.
Another man admitted assaulting a police officer and another man denied the charge, Greater Manchester Police said.

Around 150,000 football fans were in Manchester for the Rangers game against Zenit St Petersburg at the City of Manchester Stadium on May 14 2008.

A big screen for fans without a ticket to watch the match failed in the early evening, triggering widespread disturbances.

Seven of the men who appeared before Manchester Crown Court pleaded guilty to one count of violent disorder.

They are Michael Hindle, 21, of Westmorland Close, Leyland, and David Annette, 35, of Chorley, Lancashire; David McCullough, 21, of Moorcroft Drive, Burnage, Manchester; Gordon Forrest, 45, of Ledi Drive, Bearsden, Glasgow; James Bell, 42, of Corrie View, Cumbernauld; Thomas Murphy, 28, of Flatterton Road, Greenock; and a 17-year-old boy from Glasgow who cannot be named for legal reasons.

Mark Stoddart, 25, of Westmuir Street, Glasgow, pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm against PC Mick Regan, and two offences of violent disorder.

John Saunders, 30, of Fullarton Road, Cumbernauld, also admitted two counts of violent disorder.

Scott McSeveney, 21, of Hunter Avenue, Shotts, Lanarkshire, denied assault occasioning actual bodily harm against PC John Goodwin, and a charge of violent disorder. He is due to go on trial on March 15 next year.

Brian McVicar, 29, and Greg McKenna, 22, both of Falkland Drive, East Kilbride, denied a charge of violent disorder and will go on trial on May 17 next year.

Sentencing of all defendants will take place after the trials at Manchester Crown Court have concluded.

Argentine: Huracan - San Lorenzo - 21/11/2009

Source: http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/feedarticle/8821297

Argentina derby match deleyed by crowd trouble

BUENOS AIRES, Nov 21 (Reuters) - A clash between Argentina police and fans marred Saturday's championship match between Buenos Aires rivals Huracan and San Lorenzo.
The start of the match was delayed for around 30 minutes after police sprayed tear gas on sections of the crowd after they began fighting on the terraces.
Players and officials were forced to retreat to the changing rooms as the gas wafted on to the pitch and around 20 people were injured and two arrested, local media reported.
The fighting broke out when Huracan fans unfurled a banner with the colours of their rivals, a practice regarded as provocative and banned by local authorities.
When the match eventually began, San Lorenzo triumphed 2-0, ending a run of two successive defeats after former Olympique Marseille defender Renato Civelli opened the scoring with an early goal.
Uruguayan striker Santiago "Tank" Silva scored the winner as Banfield came from a goal down to beat Independiente 2-1 while Atletico Tucuman beat Chacarita Juniors 2-1 in Saturday's other matches in the Apertura championship.
Banfield are the only unbeaten team this season and lead the championship by three points. Newell's Old Boys can rejoin them at the top if they beat arch-rivals Rosario Central in the Rosario derby on Sunday.
Banfield have 35 points from 15 matches, Newell's have 32 and third-placed Estudiantes have 29 but have played an extra match.
South American champions Estudiantes beat bottom team Tigre 3-1 on Friday night.

Argentine refuses to play after threats from hooligans - 17/11/2009

Source: http://football.uk.reuters.com/world/news/LH224501.php

BUENOS AIRES, Nov 17 (Reuters) - Tigre midfielder Matias Gimenez, threatened by his own team's hardcore fans who accuse him of not trying hard enough, would not play for the club any longer, he said on Tuesday.

Gimenez told reporters he was accosted in the street on his way home and threatened with violence, saying the hooligans criticised his "attitude on the pitch... we argued a bit and then something very nasty happened but I won't go into detail."

The 26-year-old said he had told his agent and the club's board of his decision. He would continue to train with Tigre, who are bottom of the first division, and seek a move during the next transfer window.

"I took the decision for the security of my family, they're everything to me and I don't want anything to happen to them... I have two children who really are worth more than a ball."

Italy: Casertana - Casarano - 22/11/2009

Source: www.interno18.it

Tensions during the game, stopped for 2 minutes

Supporters of Casarano forced the police with the aim to enter inside the stadium without ticket.
After 8 minutes of play, they started to threw various missiles in the direction of the referee of the game.

Before the game, rather curiously the terrace reserved to the local ultras seemed relatively empty, while that seemed extremely active in Laviano street. A little later an explosion occured, followed by tear gases.
But what did occured?
To have an answer we needed to look on the side of the 150 supporters of Casarano who made the trip to Caserta: 42 of them had paid their ticket , all the others having penetrated in the stand without ticket.
Besides trying to enter in force, it was necessary for them to face the local ultras, so police used tear gas to restore order; police who opened the gates to Casarano supporters with the aim to avoid any severa confront between both sides.

But in small number police had not provided that once inside these same ultras of Casarano would force a gate between different areas and this in order to launch various missiles towards the local supporters.
After 8 minutes of exchange of stones, the referee decided the interruption of the match, asking the Casarano captain to go to dialog with his supporters.

Five Marseille fans receive jail sentences after clashes - 16/11/2009

Source : Reuters

Five Olympique Marseille fans have received prison sentences of up to 18 months for throwing projectiles at police amid clashes with Paris St Germain supporters, a French court said on Monday.

Twenty people, including 11 police officers, were hurt in the clashes on Oct. 25.

The court said the five men, aged 18 to 25, received sentences ranging from three months suspended to 18 months in jail. No further details were available.

The violence erupted after the Ligue 1 match between the two sides was postponed because three PSG players had been diagnosed with the H1N1 virus. The game between the fierce rivals will be played on Friday.

Juve fined for chants - 24/11/2009

Source : SkySports

The Italian league has fined Juventus €20,000 (£18,000) after fans continually chanted an offensive song about Inter Milan striker Mario Balotelli.

Juve have been punished after followers of the club sang abuse in the direction of the Inter player during Sunday's 1-0 Serie A victory over Udinese.

Last season Juve were forced to play a game behind closed doors after fans chanted abuse towards 19-year-old Balotelli in a match against Inter in Turin.

The league's disciplinary commissioner has now decided that the new chant is "insulting and incites violence" but did not say it was racist.

It is thought the fact that a top-of-the-table clash is scheduled with leaders Inter in two weeks' time may have influenced the decision.

Marseille hit with stadium ban - 27/11/2009

Source : SkySports

Marseille are considering an appeal after being hit by a one-match stadium ban by French Football's Disciplinary Commission.

The decision has been made for Marseille to play a game behind closed doors after the commission reviewed the behaviour of fans against Monaco on 4th October.

The commission cited previous offences by Marseille supporters when choosing to impose a ban rather than another fine.

Club director Antoine Veyrat has reacted angrily to the punishment, indicating that an appeal will be launched.

"We are disappointed and bitter," said Veyrat.

"We're now waiting for notification of the exact nature of the sanction.

"Of course, the club will use all legal means at our disposal to show what action we have taken and our good faith in this affair."

Marseille could also be facing further action with the behaviour of their fans in the match against Paris St Germain last weekend also now under review.

Bordeaux - Juventus - 25/11/2009

Source : CNN.com

Juventus racist fans targeted in France

A French anti-racist group says it will file a lawsuit against Juventus supporters who chanted racist abuse about Inter Milan striker Mario Balotelli during a match at Bordeaux.

The International League against Racism and Anti-Semitism said in statement Friday that it wants French authorities to open an investigation and "seek the most severe sanctions against their perpetrators'' after Juventus fans insulted Balotelli during Wednesday's 2-0 loss at Bordeaux in Champions League.

Balotelli, an Italian of Ghanaian descent, is regularly taunted during Serie A matches.

The LICRA asked UEFA for a "firm reaction.''
