| Ten jailed over football violence - 01/11/2005Source : BBC NEWS Ten football hooligans have been given jail sentences ranging from 15 months to three years for their part in a violent disturbance in Brighton. They attacked a group of Leeds United fans who were drinking in a pub in the city centre on 23 October 2004. The violence followed a match between Leeds and Brighton and Hove Albion. The 10 men sentenced at Hove Crown Court on Tuesday were from East Sussex. They have all been banned for life by Brighton and Hove Albion FC. The hooligans used tables and chairs from a restaurant as missiles during their assault on the Pump House in Market Street. Those involved were identified from CCTV footage and were then arrested during a series of police raids. Ch Supt Jeremy Paine said the attack had been mindless and inhuman. "What we saw was violence in the extreme threatening our city centre and innocent members of the public. "We will not tolerate such behaviour [and] we will always pursue offenders vigorously." Martin Perry, chief executive of Brighton and Hove Albion FC, said: "They are people who have used the name of the club and the occasion of a match to perpetrate violence for their own gratification. "With only one exception they had not been at the match. "They have no place in our football club. "Not only will they not attend matches at Withdean, but we will make sure that they never watch at the new Community Stadium because we are banning them for life." The men were sentenced on charges of violent disorder. John M***, 49, of Walmer Crescent, Brighton, was found guilty at Hove Crown Court at a trial in September. He was given three years in prison on Tuesday. Sami A*********, 20, of Downland Court, Portslade, pleaded guilty after a jury failed to reach a verdict in his trial. He was sentenced to 18 months. Eight other men admitted violent disorder at pre-trial court hearings. Darren G****, 39, of Third Avenue, Hove, and David H******, 39, of Merevale, Hollingdean, Brighton, were sentenced to two years; Michael B****, 38, of Havelock Road, Brighton, was given 15 months; Benjamin R*****, 34, of Walker Close, Eastbourne, and Joseph P*******, 47, of Springfield Road, Brighton, got two-and-a-half years each; Paul G*******, 31, of Rutland Gardens, Hove, was sentenced to three years; Laurence E******, 21, of Loder Road, and Richard J******, 28, of Valley Drive, both in Brighton, got 18 months. Nine of the men were handed seven-year football banning orders, while Grealish was subject to a 10-year order. £6,000 of damage was caused to the front of the pub _________________ | |

| FIFA ban fans after Serbian violence against Bosnia - 04/11/2005
Source : REÜTERS
FIFA have ordered Serbia and Montenegro to play one home match in an empty stadium following crowd trouble during their home World Cup qualifier against Bosnia on October 12.
FIFA, world soccer's governing body, has also fined the Serbia & Montenegro FA 23,000 euros while the Bosnian FA has been fined 26,000 euros after their fans fought with their rivals during the match.
Serbia and Montenegro are likely to serve the ban in their first Euro 2008 qualifying match next year.
Rival fans pelted each other with flares and seats during the politically charged fixture, which the Serbs won 1-0 to qualify for next year's World Cup finals in Germany.
FIFA also fined the Croatian Football Federation 26,000 euros following trouble from their fans during Croatia's World Cup qualifier with Hungary in Budapest on October 12. _________________

| Hooligan bans reach record high - 05/11/2005
Source : BBC NEWS
A record number of football hooligans were prevented from attending games at home and abroad during the last season.
The number of new football banning orders issued in England and Wales in 2004-5 topped 1,000 - bringing the total number of bans in place to 3,153.
The overall number of football-related arrests fell 11% to 3,628 with Leeds United having most fans arrested - 173.
The statistics were published as Home Office Minister Paul Goggins launched a new UK-wide football policing unit.
The Home Office report said that although there remained a "lingering domestic football disorder problem", the number of arrests was low.
In two-thirds of all matches no arrests were made, while one arrest or fewer was made at eight out of 10 games.
This was despite the highest number of football league attendances for 35 years - with more than 29m people going to league matches.
Mr Goggins said the statistics were extremely encouraging.
"With an 11% decrease in the number of football-related arrests and an average of just 1.21 arrests per game it is clear that the tough legislation to stamp out football hooliganism together with targeted policing is continuing to be effective.
"I am particularly pleased to see that only six arrests were made at overseas England and Wales international matches, building on the generally excellent behaviour of fans attending Euro 2004."
This was reassuring coming in the run-up to next year's world cup in Germany, he added.
But he added: "We are not complacent. Football hooliganism is still a lingering menace, albeit among a small minority of supporters, and we will not tolerate it."
This was why he was launching a new UK football policing unit which will provide a direct link between intelligence, police operations and banning orders, he said.
David Swift, Deputy Chief Constable of Staffordshire Police and senior police spokesman on football issues, said the statistics showed that the measures were working.
He said: "Attendances are up, problems are down so now is the time to continue with the tactics that were working - encouraging genuine fans and seeking to ban those who would spoil things for the overwhelming majority."

Football arrests fall as banning orders rise - 05/11/2005
Source : REÜTERS
Arrests for football-related offences fell 11 percent to 3,628 in England and Wales in the 2004-05 season, the Home Office said on Saturday.
At Premier League and lower division matches there were 2,725 arrests, the lowest in at least 10 years.
The Home Office said the fall showed that targeted policing and legislation banning individuals from attending games were having a positive effect.
It said arrests for violent disorder, the worst kind of football-related violence, were down 32 percent to 428.
Authorities issued nearly 1,000 football banning orders last season, lifting the total number of outstanding bans by 21 percent to 3,153.
The orders, which last between two and 10 years, can bar individual supporters from using public transport on match days and even ban them from town centres and bars.
This season fans who cause trouble at matches run the further risk of losing their passports and being banned from every ground.
LINGERING MENACE
"Football hooliganism is still a lingering menace, albeit among a small minority of supporters, and we will not tolerate it," said Home Office Minister Paul Goggins.
Goggins was particularly pleased that there were only six arrests at overseas England and Wales games in the last 12 months and said this was reassuring in the run up to next year's World Cup in Germany.
England fans behaved well during the 2004 European Championship in Portugal after causing mayhem at the previous tournament in Belgium and the Netherlands four years earlier.
More than 2,800 known or suspected hooligans were banned from travelling to Portugal to prevent the kind of organised trouble which had marred previous tournaments, including the 1998 World Cup in France.
The Home Office figures showed the club with the worst arrests record last season was Leeds United, with 173 of its supporters arrested at league and cup games.
It was followed by Manchester United with 160, Chelsea (130) and West Ham (105).
Leeds fans also had the highest number of banning orders imposed last season at 58, followed by Middlesbrough (45) and Portsmouth (38).
Cardiff City had the largest number of outstanding banning orders, 152, followed by Portsmouth (133) and Leeds (128).
There were 964 arrests in the Premier League, 1,026 in the second division, 518 in the third and 217 in the fourth. _________________

| Germany, Netherlands step up police cooperation ahead of World Cup - 04/11/2005
Source : AFP
The German parliament has passed a new law increasing police co-operation with The Netherlands ahead of the football World Cup next summer.
The Bundesrat, or upper house of parliament, voted to allow police from both nations to chase speeding cars and use their firearms up to 150 kilometers (93 miles) into the neighboring countries' territory. The previous limit was 15 kilometers (10 miles).
German and Dutch police may also patrol together, launch joint operations against organized crime and trade information about suspects, including their DNA.
The legislation, which is expected to easily pass the Bundestag lower house of parliament is aimed particularly at major events such as the 2006 World Cup in Germany.
It will allow Dutch police to trail Dutch hooligans to German stadiums in a measure aimed at curbing violence among fans.
The new legislation implements a policy agreed in March by the interior and justice ministers of the two countries.
Germany has similar pacts with Switzerland and Austria. _________________

| Germany team taking bodyguards to France - 10/11/2005
Source : REÜTERS
Two bodyguards will escort Germany to Paris for their friendly against France on Saturday because of urban violence that has flared across the country, a German soccer official said on Thursday.
Germany team manager Oliver Bierhoff said the extra security was a necessary precaution because of the turmoil.
"We don't want to leave anything to chance," Bierhoff said. The guards will stay in the same hotel as the team, which travels to Paris on Friday.
The violence in France dropped for the third straight night on Wednesday after the government adopted emergency powers.
For the last two weeks there have been petrol bomb attacks on cars, buses, public buildings and police by youths angered by racism, unemployment and harsh treatment by police. _________________

In a telegram sent to France, Zhirinovsky, who is also Deputy Speaker of the Duma, said: "We are ready with volunteer units of football fans and activists who have served in military combat hot spots.
"I am convinced that our initiative would restore total order and calm the rioting within 48 hours."

| Policeman beaten by German hooligans invited to World Cup - 12/11/2005Source : REÜTERS A French policeman beaten almost to death by German hooligans during the 1998 World Cup in France has been invited by the German Football Association (DFB) to attend a game at next year's finals in Germany. DFB general secretary Horst R. Schmidt has personally invited gendarme Daniel Nivel, his wife and their two sons to a game of the 2006 World Cup, the DFB said in a statement on Saturday. Schmidt accompanied the Germany team to Paris, where they are facing France in a friendly international later on Saturday. Nivel was brutally beaten up by German hooligans after a World Cup tie between Germany and Yugoslavia in the northern French town of Lens on July 21, 1998. The attack left him in a coma for six weeks and permanently brain damaged. He still has difficulties moving and speaking and cannot remember what happened. _________________ | |

| Turkey - Switzerland - 16/11/2005Source : SPORTINGLIFE.COM Swiss Through At Stormy IstanbulViolent scenes marred the end of Turkey's World Cup play-off with Switzerland in Istanbul. The Swiss, who had won Saturday's first leg 2-0 in Berne, lost a dramatic second leg 4-2 in Istanbul but advanced to the finals in Germany next summer thanks to the away goals rule. Tuncay Sanli scored a hat-trick for the Turks, who finished third in the 2002 World Cup, but Marco Streller's 84th-minute goal put the Swiss through. However, the match ended with tempers fraying and Benjamin Huggel was seen to kick a member of the Turkish coaching staff as he ran off the pitch before former Aston Villa defender Alpay aimed a kick at Streller as the goalscorer went down the players' tunnel. Television footage then showed a melee breaking out in the tunnel involving several players from either side. Swiss TV reported defender Stephane Grichting was hospitalised after being kicked in the groin. "A few of our players overreacted after the match but I'm happy there were no serious incidents," said Turkey striker Halil Altintop, who plays for Kaiserslautern. "I was in the Swiss locker room and talked to the players I knew from the Bundesliga. They said everything was fine." Switzerland boss Kobi Kuhn, who was reportedly also hit by coins when he walked off the pitch, said he needed more time for the achievement to sink in. "We could not yet show our tremendous joy but it will be a great feeling very soon," he said. "It was one of those matches which really makes you nervous." Swiss press officer Pierre Benoit said his federation will report the incidents to FIFA. _________________ | |

Police on airport hooligan watch
Football hooligans planning to travel to England's match with Argentina in Geneva, Switzerland have been urged to think again by police.
Starting on Thursday, Operation Detergent will target known or potential trouble makers planning to fly from Manchester Airport.
The operation will last until the match finishes on Saturday.
Ch Insp Martin Gaffney said the force's message to potential hooligans was "don't waste your time."
"Plain clothes officers will be working to spot known trouble makers and uniformed officers will be providing a high-visibility present at the airport, talking to fans and monitoring the situation," he said.
"In past operations of this kind, the vast majority of people approached by officers were genuine supporters who were co-operative and understanding, but we have been successful in stopping a number of known hooligans travelling." _________________

| FIFA launch probe into Turkey-Swiss incidents - 17/11/2005Source : REÜTERS FIFA president Sepp Blatter has condemned violent incidents at the end of Turkey's World Cup playoff against Switzerland as "trampling fair play underfoot" and announced an investigation by world soccer's ruling body. "I can tell you this, not as a Swiss, but as the president of FIFA that we will act here and we will act tough," Blatter told a news conference on Thursday. "This was anti-fair play. The Turks had the chance after the (first leg) defeat to act as a good host and show that a revenge foul is not done in football." Switzerland, 2-0 up from the first leg, reached the World Cup finals in Germany next year on away goals despite Turkey winning the second leg 4-2 in Istanbul on Wednesday. The Swiss players left the pitch under a hail of objects thrown by the Turkish crowd. Players from both sides clashed as they ran off the field. The punishment after the inquiry could range from a warning to the suspension of any football association found at fault. The investigation must be finished by December 9, the day of the draw for the 2006 World Cup finals, Blatter said. Switzerland defender Stephane Grichting needed hospital treatment after being kicked in the stomach and had a catheter inserted. He will be out injured for up to 10 days. "It (the inquiry) will show whether we will investigate against Switzerland too," Blatter said. "At the moment we're just questioning and we're questioning both sides because, of course, the Swiss want to justify themselves after what has happened." "HOPPING MAD" Earlier Blatter told Swiss radio he was "hopping mad" about the violence. "Something's not right in football anymore," he told Radio DRS. "Fair play has been trampled under foot, in the truest sense of the word. "I have never experienced anything like it." Turkey, surprise semi-finalists at the 2002 World Cup, had two fines for crowd disturbances plus two warnings during their World Cup qualifying campaign, FIFA officials said. On arrival at Istanbul airport the Switzerland squad was kept waiting for two hours at passport control and baggage reclaim. Police struggled to hold back fans shouting abuse at the Swiss players and the team bus was pelted with eggs. Swiss foreign minister Micheline Calmy-Rey sent a letter of complaint to the Turkish government, calling the team's reception by Turkish fans as "unacceptable behaviour". The Turkish football federation had complained that Swiss fans jeered their national anthem in the Bern first leg and Turkish players had been abused after Saturday's match. Blatter told Reuters events in Bern will also be investigated. On Wednesday Swiss player Benjamin Huggel was seen kicking out at Turkey's assistant coach Mehmet Ozdilek as he left the pitch. Team spokesman Pierre Benoit said: "We haven't seen the pictures yet, so we're not making any statement. "In principle, however, we believe Huggel was defending himself after he and Tranquillo Barnetta came under attack." Then after Milan's match against PSV in the Champions League in Eindhoven a group of about 10 Viking ultras armed with knives attacked FdL members and demanded the return of their flags.
