Fans ignore match plea - 19/11/2005

Source : EVENING GAZETTE

Thousands of Boro fans have ignored police warnings and booked flights and accommodation in Holland ahead of their AZ Alkmaar match.

The two teams are due to play each other on Thursday in the competition's group stage match.

But Cleveland Police are again urging fans without tickets not to travel to the Dutch town, 26 miles from Amsterdam.

Middlesbrough Commander Superintendent Steve Swales said: "We are in daily contact with our colleagues in Holland and are committed to working with them both here and over there to ensure this match passes off safely and without incident.

Bulgarian court upholds Briton's jail sentence - 10/11/2005

Source : REÜTERS

A court in Bulgaria's Black Sea town of Varna has upheld the 15-year jail sentence against a British soccer fan convicted of attempted murder.

Michael Shields, 19, from Liverpool, was convicted in July for smashing a rock over the head of a bartender in Bulgaria's Golden Sands resort during a brawl at a fast food stall.

"The appeals court has upheld the sentence ... Shields has one more chance to appeal at the supreme court," said court spokeswoman Deliana Petkova. The ruling was made on Wednesday.

The court cut civil damages awarded to bartender Martin Georgiev, who suffered a fractured skull, to 120,000 levs (41,000 pounds), from an initial 200,000 levs.

Shields' lawyers had demanded the sentence be dropped or charges be reduced to "causing serious bodily damage".

They had also asked the court to question another Briton, 20-year-old Graham Sankey, who faxed a confession to Bulgarian officials saying he committed the crime and that Shields was innocent.

But the court has rejected the motion on the grounds that Sankey had previously been excluded as a witness from the case and that his confession conflicted with testimony from nine witnesses who said it was Shields who attacked Georgiev.

Shields was arrested in July at the resort, where he was staying with other Liverpool FC fans after watching a match in neighbouring Turkey. He can appeal the court's decision in the next 15 days.

Celtic Glasgow - Glasgow Rangers - 19/11/2005

Source : TEAMTALK

Rival fans told to behave

Celtic and Rangers have joined forces in calling for supporters to behave at Saturday's Old Firm derby at Parkhead.

Sparks look set to fly on the pitch with Ibrox chairman David Murray demanding more fight and improvement after the Light Blues lost at the same ground in the CIS Insurance Cup.

While manager Alex McLeish was left worrying about his future, it did not go unnoticed that 26 supporters - including 24 Rangers fans - were arrested for sectarian offences.

Celtic chief executive Peter Lawwell said: "Two of these arrests were from the Celtic support and I can say categorically that if these people are found guilty then they will be banned indefinitely from attending Celtic's home and away matches.

"Last week's pre-match demonstration of Celtic's community activity in fighting against sectarianism and racism was very well received by supporters and the club will continue to focus on projects such as Celtic Education, Sense over Sectarianism, Show Racism the Red Card and the Old Firm Alliance.

"The focus will again be on this weekend's match and we would ask our fans for their continued backing.

"As with all matches at Celtic Park, Saturday's game will again be well policed throughout the stadium.

"The police have again indicated that they will be monitoring any sectarian behaviour very closely and will deal with this issue very seriously.

"The police will have the full support of Celtic Football Club in dealing with sectarian behaviour should it be identified."

Rangers head of security Laurence Macintyre added: "The police match commander has made it absolutely clear at a meeting attended by Rangers, Celtic and the SPL that his strict enforcement policy, particularly in relation to breaches of the peace aggravated by religious prejudice, will not be relaxed.

"It is clear too that the media will be particularly interested in how both sets of fans behave and fans should avoid adverse publicity for the club and themselves."

But under-pressure McLeish is more concerned about his position having been given an ultimatum by the chairman.

Rangers are 12 points behind Celtic in the SPL and a defeat could see his position become more threatened with crucial games against Porto and Inter Milan in the Champions League coming up.

Five jailed over attack on fans - 18/11/2005

Source : BBC NEWS

Five Plymouth football hooligans have been jailed following an attack on Leeds United supporters.

They stormed into the beer garden of a Plymouth pub, terrifying families and attacking opposing fans last year.
All admitted or were found guilty of violent disorder and were jailed for a total of three years three months.
Five others who joined in got community service orders and all the hooligans have been banned from going to football matches for up to six years.
The attack happened at the Britannia pub in Plymouth before a League Cup tie between Plymouth Argyle and Leeds United at nearby Home Park in September.
Malcolm Galloway, prosecuting, told Plymouth Crown Court the defendants, aged 17 to 32, were all members of The Central Element.
He said: "This is a gang associated with Plymouth Argyle who follow their games and England games at home and overseas. The police's football intelligence unit say there are about 200 members.
"At the time of this disorder they were heard shouting 'We are the Central Element'."
Mr Galloway said the trouble started when gang members rushed in from the beer garden chanting and shouting 'Come on lads, let's get them' as terrified families scattered.
Door staff tried to stop them, but they attacked again, throwing bottles and glasses.
The head doorman suffered cuts and bruises and needed 11 stitches from a punch in the face. The female bar manager was hit three times in the face and three others suffered injuries to their teeth, ankle and chest.
Barristers representing the 10 men said many were not members of the Central Element but were drawn into the violence because they were at the pub.

Charlton Athletic - Manchester United - 19/11/2005

Source : REÜTERS

Charlton mull ban on Manchester United fans

Charlton Athletic are considering banning Manchester United fans from future games at The Valley after incidents during Saturday's league game.

Charlton said a female staff member was sexually assaulted by a United fan, a steward was injured by a crowd surge in the away end and security staff were pelted with broken seats and spat upon.

The club said the woman was helping disabled fans in the away end when the assault occurred. A spokeswoman for London's police force said on Monday a man in his 20s was arrested for alleged sexual assault.

"It is utterly despicable that anyone should be subjected to this sort of attack," said Charlton chief executive Peter Varney.

"I have never heard of anything like this at a football match before, and we would like to thank those Manchester United fans who witnessed it, and came forward to make statements to the police."

Varney said it was the third time in four seasons that United fans had caused trouble at Charlton.

"When you consider the extra safety and security measures we take for games with Manchester United, you begin to wonder whether it's all worth it," added Varney.

"I think, when we see the reports from the police and the local authority, it will leave us with little alternative but to refuse to sell tickets to Manchester United fans for future games at The Valley.

"I'd rather have the away end empty than to run the risk of further incidents like those we saw on Saturday."

Crackdown on rail football louts - 26/11/2005

Source : BBC NEWS

About 500 police officers are tackling football hooliganism on England's rail network on Saturday.

They will arrest troublemakers and bar unruly fans from trains, with offenders facing football banning orders.

A total of 19 fixtures, including five Premiership matches where police fear there is the potential for disorder, will see extra patrols.

Police say matches in London involving supporters of Leeds and Hull are of "particular concern".

Andy Trotter, Deputy Chief Constable of British Transport Police (BTP), said: "Rowdy football fans can be a nightmare for other passengers. Even when they are only being boisterous, in the confines of a train or in large groups on stations, they can be very intimidating."

Officers were focusing on the Hull game against Queens Park Rangers, at Loftus Road, west London, because of hostility between fans dating back to a match this summer, when Hull supporters taunted QPR fans over the 7 July bombings, BTP spokesman Simon Lubin said.

He also said there was a history of bitter rivalry between supporters of Leeds and Millwall, who were playing each other on Saturday.

It is the second "Day of Action" run by BTP, the first having taken place on 30 April when officers arrested 10 people after targeting 15 problem games.

In one incident, 20 fans wielding bottles and other weapons clashed at Clapham Junction station in south London.

AZ Alkmaar - Middlesbrough - 25/11/2005

Source : teamtalk

Boro fan killed in Holland attack

One man has died and another is fighting for his life after they were both attacked in Amsterdam, Cleveland Police have revealed.

It is thought the pair could be Middlesbrough fans and were in Holland to watch their team play a Uefa Cup match on Thursday night.

Steve McClaren's club reached the knockout stages of the European competition after sharing a goalless draw with Dutch side AZ Alkmaar, who are based just 37 miles from Amsterdam.

A Cleveland Police spokeswoman said: "We are in regular contact with police in Holland following information received by Cleveland Police this morning of an attack that took place in Amsterdam.

"This incident resulted in the death of one man and severe injuries to another man."

Officials at Middlesbrough were awaiting news of the police investigation.

"We are aware that there was a serious incident in Amsterdam in the early hours of this morning believed to involve two people from the Teesside area, resulting in the death of one man and serious injury to another," said Dave Allan, the club's head of media and communications.

"Cleveland Police are liaising with Dutch police, who are investigating the incident. Cleveland Police are keeping the football club fully informed as more information becomes available.

"At the moment, we are unable to make any further comment."

It is understood that the two men were not on any of the official trips to Thursday night's game.

Police hunt fan's killer - 26/11/2005

Source : Evening Gazette

Murder squad detectives from Cleveland have flown to Amsterdam today to help with investigations into the fatal stabbing of a Teesside man.

Police have still not confirmed whether the victim of yesterday's attack was a Boro fan although the British Embassy in The Hague said yesterday that he was part of the supporters' group in Holland for the team's UEFA Cup clash with Alkmaar.

As reported in a special late edition of the Evening Gazette yesterday, one Teesside man died and another suffered serious injuries following the horrific knife attack at around 3am in the Dutch city.

Police in Amsterdam said the two men were attacked after they refused to buy drugs from a third man.

They were visiting Pinocchio's bar in Warmoestraat in the red light district in central Amsterdam when there was a confrontation.

All three went outside where both local men were stabbed. The second man's injures are not said to be life threatening.

Detective Superintendent Tony Hutchinson and Detective Sergeant Ian Henderson left Teesside on a flight for Amsterdam today to assist Dutch police.

No details about either of the men have yet been released by police. Despite initial confirmation from the British Embassy in The Hague yesterday that the dead man was part of the Middlesbrough football supporters' group, officers on Teesside have played down the link.

At a press conference at police HQ in Ladgate Lane, Detective Chief Superintendent Mark Braithwaite said: "I am conscious that it would be easy to link the killing to the football match. On the information we have at this time I am not in a position to do that.

"There has been major speculation that they had travelled to Holland to watch the Middlesbrough game with Alkmaar.

"We very much want to distance this from a football hooligan type of incident. It was a single criminal violent act."

As the news spread yesterday the Boro fans' Fly Me To The Moon website was flooded with messages of condolence from around Teesside and the UK, and even from Alkmaar fans.

One Boro fan said he knew the victim, but didn't name him.

"I can't believe it," he wrote: "A genuinely lovely guy who comes from a great family. I can't write anymore but this is a tragedy. Truly awful. RIP my friend."

Det Ch Supt Braithwaite said senior detectives from Cleveland's Murder Investigation Team were liaising closely with Dutch counterparts in the murder inquiry.

Specialist family liaison officers have also been appointed who will look after relatives of the dead and injured men in England.

He said: "As yet we have not been able to make contact with family members. Until we speak to close relatives and formal identities have been confirmed we will not be in a position to name the two men.

He added: "It must be stressed the murder inquiry is in the hands of the Dutch Police."

Last night Middlesbrough football club's media and communication's manager, Dave Allen, said: "We are aware that there was a serious incident in Amsterdam believed to involve two people from the Teesside area, resulting in the death of one man and serious injury to another.

"Cleveland Police are liaising with Dutch police who are investigating the incident. Cleveland Police are keeping the football club fully informed as more information becomes available."

Fly Me To The Moon editor Rob Nichols expressed sympathy to the families of the men.

He said: "Like all Boro fans I am in shock and am worried. There was no trouble at the game. All we can do is send our condolences to the family of whoever this is."

Cleveland Police have set up a special number for any witnesses, or anyone who was in the vicinity at the time of the attack. They are urged to call 01642 301333.

In a separate incident in Alkmaar, after the football match, a Dutchman was the victim of a serious assault and suffered severe facial injuries inflicted with a glass. A British national has been arrested in connection with the assault.

Cote d'Ivoire defender Zoro in tears after racist abuse

Messina's African defender Marc Zoro was reduced to tears after being subjected to racial abuse by the visiting fans in their Serie A match at home to Inter Milan.

The Cote d'Ivoire international was targetted when he went to collect the ball near the away supporters' section and after a chorus of monkey chants he decided he would take no more part in the game.

Inter's Brazilian striker Adriano went over to console Zoro before he broke down in tears.

Zoro's team-mates managed to then persuade him to play the remainder of the match and his decision was applauded by the Messina crowd.

Officials from the Italian football federation talked to Zoro about the incident after the match and the matter is likely to lead to an official enquiry.

Last month, in an interview with AFP, Zoro said he constantly suffers racial insults.

"I have been playing in Italy for three years and I see this happening almost daily," the 21-year-old said.

"All this makes me really sad. It's not easy for me and it hurts. I don't deserve this."

On the first day of this season, Zoro was subjected to racial abuse by a large section of Lazio fans at the Olympic stadium.

His anger almost boiled over at the final whistle and he had to be restrained by his team-mates.

Afterwards Lazio president Claudio Lotito went into the Messina dressing room to apologise on behalf of his club.

Chelsea fined, West Ham warned over League Cup violence - 28/11/2005

Source : REÜTERS

Champions Chelsea have been fined 30,000 pounds and West Ham United warned over their future conduct after crowd trouble at their League Cup tie last season.

Police in riot gear struggled to contain West Ham fans at the end of the third round match at Stamford Bridge, which Chelsea won 1-0.

Chelsea striker Mateja Kezman was hit in the face by a coin during the game 13 months ago and needed treatment to a cut above his left eye.

Both clubs, who had requested a personal hearing with the FA, were charged with failing to control their fans.

World Cup hosts on red alert after hooligan turf war - 28/11/2005

Source : AFP + REÜTERS

With just over six months to go until the 2006 World Cup finals a hooligan turf war in the small town of Briesen has put hosts Germany on red alert.

A report in Spiegel magazine described how German and Polish hooligans took part in an organised 100-man mass brawl at a forest area in Briesen, an East German town near the Polish border, on Sunday in a fight to establish who would rule the streets at the World Cup finals.

Police confirmed the details of 30 Germans and 55 Poles had been noted down for grievous bodily harm and revealed one of the German hooligans arrested had already been sentenced for his part in the riots at the 1998 World Cup in France.

French police officer Daniel Nivel was on duty in Lens for the Germany-Yugoslavia match in the 1998 World Cup when a gang of 500 neo-Nazis went on a rampage through the town.

Nivel was cornered and beaten savagely with an iron bar and went into a coma with severe brain damage.

"Mass brawl between Germans and Poles," headlined Bild daily. "The hooligan war - a taster of what will happen at the World Cup?"

Both Poland and Germany will be at the finals and historically there is a lot of animosity between the two nations.

Hosts Germany have promised a safe World Cup finals, running from June 9 until July 9, and the hooligan turf war will concern the organising committee (OK).

The host nation has not had the easiest build-up to the finals with German away fans rioting during the friendly match at Slovenia in March this year and then in September's friendly in Slovakia.

German, Polish hooligans brawl at border

Around 100 German and Polish hooligans staged a mass brawl in a wood on the German side of the border on Sunday afternoon, police said on Monday.

A 100-strong German police team stopped and searched 45 Germans who had travelled in 15 cars and a busload of 53 Poles after receiving information about the planned fight near the village of Briesen, 60 kms east of Berlin.

One of the Germans stopped on Sunday had been convicted for his part in the rioting at the 1998 World Cup in France in which a French policeman was beaten unconscious and remained in a coma for six months, a Berlin police official said.

The brawl took place just over six months before the start of the 2006 World Cup hosted by Germany and for which Poland have qualified.

The Germans involved were not exclusively football hooligans, but also nightclub bouncers and Hell's Angels, the police said.

Mostly from eastern states, but also from Lower Saxony in the west, they could face prosecution for assault and disturbing the peace.

Italians united against racism in football - 28/11/2005

Source : AFP

Italian league and cup football games in the next week are all to start five minutes late to protest against racism among fans which again provoked ugly incidents at the weekend.

"Italian football is against racism and we will press this point home from Tuesday with this initiative which will bring together coaches, officials, players and referees," the country's football federation said in a statement.

Riddled by racist taunts and chants for years, the problem surfaced again during Sunday's league game in Sicily between Messina and Inter Milan.

The home side' African defender Marc Zoro was reduced to tears after being subjected to racial abuse by the visiting fans.

National team manager Marcello Lippi also denounced the Inter Milan fans saying that they had "insulted human nature."

"There is only one race and it is the human race," Lippi said, adding "sport should tear down barriers."
