Cardiff fans blamed for for Liberty Stadium damage - 10/11/2009
Source : WalesOnline
CARDIFF City football fans have been blamed for thousands of pounds worth of damage to Swansea’s Liberty Stadium.
Doors, toilets and around 60 seats were vandalised in the away enclosure during Saturday’s Welsh derby between the teams.
Liberty stadium managers said the damage was “totally unacceptable” and the police were investigating.
“The toilets are now totally unusable and we are currently assessing the cost of repairing them,” they said.
“It will certainly run into thousands of pounds and Cardiff City are aware of the damage caused.”
Vince Alm, of the Cardiff City Supporters’ Club, condemned those responsible.
“I’m just disappointed that people behave in that way - I don’t know what they think they achieve from it,” he said.
“I just hope that they realise they have probably cost our football club thousands of pounds. If they can’t behave, I wish they would not come to football any more.”
Mr Alm said damage had been caused by away fans in the same fixture last year - but Cardiff City had paid for repairs.
Two people were arrested during Saturday’s game, which Swansea won 3-2.
A further 13 arrests were made outside the ground after the final whistle.
South Wales Police are investigating criminal damage to the toilets and are appealing for information.

About 30 hooligans in Germany attack train carrying football fans; no injuries - 08/11/2009
Source : The Canadian Press + Spiegel.de
About 30 masked hooligans attacked a train carrying football fans when it stopped at a station in Germany, police said Monday.
The hooligans carried baseball bats, iron bars and other weapons and hurled stones when the train stopped Saturday evening in Weddel, near Braunschweig. Police officers accompanying the travelling Hannover fans prevented the two groups from clashing and no one was injured.
One carriage and the train station suffered substantial damage. The assailants, believed to be rival Eintracht Braunschweig supporters, fled in the darkness.
The train was carrying Hannover fans who were returning from Potsdam where the reserve team had played a game.
Braunschweig, which plays in the third division, had a home game Saturday. Braunschweig and Hannover have a bitter rivalry.

Algerian Football team attacked by Egyptian supporters - 12/11/2009
Source : ennaharonline.com
The Algerian national team who moved Thursday to face his Egyptian counterpart next Saturday, November 14 at Cairo Stadium on behalf of the final day of combined qualifying World Cup/ CAN 2010, was poorly received shortly after its arrival in the capital of the Pharaohs.
the player of ESS Setif, Khaled Lamouchia was seriously injured Thursday afternoon by Egyptian fans in Cairo. Hit in the head, Lamouchia received first aid at the hotel where stays the Algerian delegation.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Mourad Medelci, strongly condemned the attack against the Algerian national football team shortly after his arrival in Cairo and asked his Egyptian counterpart to take "necessary measures" to ensure the safety of the players and the staff.
In a statement, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, who reported a "warm welcome" at the airport, described as "serious" the aggression perpetrated by certain individuals against a bus carrying the delegation from the airport to the hotel, causing injuries to players.
"I asked my colleague, Mr. Ahmed Abu el-Gheit, to take all the necessary measures to ensure a normal stay at the entire delegation," Medelci said, adding that the incident is produced despite the measures taken to ensure security.
Experts from FIFA, he said, are currently at the hotel which hosted the delegation to see the damage revealed during the incident.
Paraguay's Cerro Porteno face serious sanctions after acts of violence by their fans at a Copa Sudamericana match, the South American Football Confederation (CSF) said on Thursday.
Fans threw a hail of objects at visiting Brazilian side Fluminense and Argentine referee Hector Baldassi after Cerro's 1-0 home defeat in the first leg of their semi-final on Wednesday night and a policeman was hit on the head.
The Fluminense players and Baldassi and his linesmen had to wait for more than 20 minutes in the middle of the pitch after the final whistle before they could get to the changing rooms.
"The bad conduct of the Cerro Porteno public is lamentable. It's an act of vandalism," CSF executive secretary Francisco Figueredo told local radio station Primero de Marzo. "We'll have to take drastic measures to prohibit the Cerro team from taking part (in the tournament) or make them play behind closed doors. We can't permit a situation like last night's to happen in all Cerro's matches."
Paraguayan league title holders Cerro had their General Pablo Rojas stadium reinstated for Wednesday's match after an 18-month suspension since April 2008 following a similar incident. They were also fined the maximum $20,000.
The Asuncion-based CSF will take a decision in the case at an executive committee meeting on Nov. 24.
Even if Cerro win next week's second leg in Rio de Janeiro they will not be able to use their stadium, which does not meet CSF size requirements for a continental final.
They would have play the home leg of the final at the Defensores del Chaco stadium where Paraguay play their international matches.

Greece : Bomb targets Panathinaikos fan club, no injuries - 12/11/2009
Source : Gaea Times
Greek police say a small bomb has exploded outside a Panathinaikos fan club in Athens, causing minor damage but no injuries.
A police statement says Thursday morning’s blast damaged the club entrance in the southern suburb of Aghios Dimitrios and broke windows in nearby apartments. The club was empty at the time of the blast.
There has been no claim of responsibility.
Last month, a small bomb made of camping gas canisters exploded outside an Athens fan club of Panathinaikos rival Olympiakos, also causing minor damage but no injuries.
Panathinaikos leads the Greek league with 28 points, two more than defending champion Olympiakos.

Football clubs in Peru will not provide more free tickets to their "hooligans" - 12/11/2009
Source : LivinginPeru.com
The leaders of the professional football clubs in Peru have signed an agreement with the Internal Affairs Ministry, undertaking themselves not to provide free tickets for the “hooligans” and also to require them the presentation of an ID card and their National Document of Identity (DNI) before entering any stadium.
This is a first attempt to stop the violence from 'barras bravas' (as local hooligans are known in Peru) and to avoid more deaths like that of Maria Paola Vargas.
Peru's Internal Affairs Minister, Octavio Salazar, explained that all these groups of soccer fans must register their members with the help of the National Directorate of Criminology (Dirincri) and the National Registry of Identification and Civil Status (RENIEC).
The procedure would take one to two months.

Italians protest against fan cards - 14/11/2009
Source : Reuters
Around 5,000 football fans from across Italy marched through the streets of Rome on Saturday to protest against the introduction of electronic supporter cards.
The government, prompted by years of football violence, wants to make it compulsory for fans to carry the card to away matches so authorities can better track troublemakers.
Fans say their basic human rights will be restricted by the cards, which could come into force next season after teams said a January introduction was too early.

Draconian security measures
Egypt has imposed strict security measures to prevent any slippage during the Egypt-Algeria match, decisive for the qualification to the World cup-2010, for which 70,000 spectators are expected on Saturday evening in a charged atmosphere.
Units of anti riot police are deployed everywhere inside and around the stadium. A security cordon will be established around the stadium where some 70,000 Egyptians and 2000 Algerians spectators are expected.
Thousands of Egyptian fans, faces painted in the colours of their team and brandishing Egyptian flags, crowded at midday before the Cairo International Stadium several hours before the scheduled match at 7.30 pm local time (17.30 GMT).
The task is very difficult for the Egyptians, who must win by three goals to qualify.
Tension raised a notch Thursday night between the two camps, which are engaged in an old rivalry, after an attack with stones against the bus of the Algerian selection shortly after its arrival in Cairo airport. Three Algerian players were injured; Lemouchia, Saïfi and Halliche.
The Vice-Minister of Interior, Abdel Rahim al-Qanawi, quoted by the Egyptian government newspaper Al-Ahram, said the police would impose unprecedented security measures to protect the Algerian team in its hotel and on the way to the Cairo International Stadium.
"Algeria’s team bus will be fully protected in a way never used with other teams," he said.
The Interior Minister, Habib el-Adli in person, is following the implementation of these measures, according to his deputy.
FIFA had asked the Egyptian Federation to take "all measures of security" so that the meeting takes place after the attack against the bus of the Algerian team.
Algeria has not participated in a World Cup since 1986, Egypt since 1990. The often stormy rivalry between these two leading countries of the Arab and African football is not new. In 1989, a qualifying match had degenerated into riots.

Huddersfield Town yobs banned from football matches after clashes with police - 14/11/2009
Source : Huddersfield Daily Examiner
SIX Huddersfield Town hooligans have been banned from following their team for four years after they were involved in violent clashes with police.
The men were captured on CCTV cameras during a disturbance in the Market Street area of Huddersfield after their side lost to Leicester City back in October 2008.
Prosecutor Simon Myers told Bradford Crown Court yesterday how shoppers and families with young children were frightened when a large group of men confronted police shortly after the match had ended.
The court heard that bottles and traffic cones were thrown during the confrontation and the atmosphere was antagonistic and intimidating.
Four men pleaded guilty to affray.
They are Carl Walker, 27, of New Hey Road, Marsh; Edward Hunt, 20, of Brighouse Wood Lane, Brighouse; Jonathon Hellings, 20, Halifax Road, Liversedge and Jonathon Patterson, 20, of Grange Court, Halifax.
Two others – 20-year-old Kierran Kavanagh, 20, of Stockwell Vale, Armitage Bridge, and Thomas Wilson, 30, of Leeds Road, Bradley, admitted threatening behaviour.
Judge Jonathon Durham Hall QC told them they were responsible for “oikish, disrespected and downright disgraceful behaviour’’.
He said the public was sick to death of such behaviour and they would be outraged by it.
The court heard that the men were hard-working and Walker was a degree student in London.
The football banning orders imposed against each defendant will mean they cannot go within a mile of Town’s ground on match days and they must also stay away from the railway station during specific periods when Town play home matches.
Judge Durham Hall also ordered that each should be subject to a three-month electronically-monitored curfew which restricts their movements at weekends.
Each must also do 100 hours unpaid work for the community and pay £900 in costs and a fine.
Although Judge Durham Hall said he did not want to spend £35,000 sending each of the men to prison for a year, he also did not want the public to think it had been anything other than a very expensive and unpleasant day for the defendants.
He added that he had taken account of the men’s guilty pleas and the length of time since the offences in deciding not to jail them.

Rangers fined 20,000 euros for Bucharest violence - 13/11/2009
Source : AFP
Scottish champions Rangers were on Thursday fined 20,000 euros by UEFA after their fans clashed with stewards at a Champions League match against Romanian side Unirea Urziceni.
Unirea were also fined 8,000 euros for lack of organisation at the Group G match that took place at the Ghencea Stadium in Bucharest on November 4.
"UEFA's Control and Disciplinary Body has today fined Rangers FC 20,000 euros and ordered them to pay the cost of the damage to the stadium infrastructure caused as a result of the improper conduct of the Scottish club's supporters at the UEFA Champions League Group G match against FC Unirea Urziceni in Romania on 4 November," read a UEFA statement.
Rangers chief executive Martin Bain had criticised the security set-up in the stadium and accused both security officials and local police of being heavy-handed.
Both clubs have three days to appeal against the decision.
Rangers have been punished for their fans' behaviour at European games on a number of occasions in recent years.
In 2006 they were fined for discriminatory chanting and for attacking their opponents' team coach during a game at Villarreal and they were also fined for improper conduct at a UEFA Cup match against Osasuna a year later.
Fans of the Glasgow club went on the rampage in Manchester city centre during last season's UEFA Cup final against Zenit St Petersburg, leading to a number of injuries and 46 arrests.

Violence in Marseille over Algeria, Egypt football
Rioters smashed shop windows, hurled stones at police and set fire to several boats moored in the southern French port of Marseille after Egypt beat Algeria in a football World Cup qualifying match on Saturday.
A police spokesman said more than 500 officers were deployed in the centre of Marseille, an often volatile city with a large North African immigrant population and football supporters who are considered among the most passionate in France.
Egypt won the match, which was played in Cairo, 2-0.
Police said they had made eight arrests, mostly for throwing objects, while one man was arrested for setting fire to a rubbish bin.
At least six boats were damaged and two were sunk when a fire was sparked by a smoke bomb of the kind seen frequently in French football stadiums.
Police said the trouble began after youths of Algerian origin reacted in frustration when Egypt scored towards the end of the first half of match, in which the two teams were vying to qualify for next year's World Cup.

Paris Saint-Germain Fans To Boycott Trip To Olympique Marseille - 10/11/2009
Source : Goal.com
Fans of les Parisiens are revolting against the club's decision to make it compulsory for them to travel south on a specially chartered train...
Although Paris Saint-Germain’s trip to Olympique de Marseille is one of the most hotly anticipated fixtures in the French game, supporters of the capital club have announced that they will boycott the match, which is due to take place on November 20.
Much controversy has already surrounded this fixture, which was originally scheduled for Sunday, October 25. However, a swine flu outbreak in les Parisiens’ camp so the game postponed at the 11th hour, leaving many angry visiting fans stranded in the southern city with no game to go to.
Tensions run high in such a fixture at any time, so violent incidents were no great surprise after news of the cancellation broke amongst the visiting fans. It was these problems that have seen PSG limited to just 1,000 tickets for the rescheduled fixture.
In order to minimise the risk of trouble, les Parisiens have chartered a special train, and it is this issue that this causing real animosity amongst supporters groups.
“We’re not animals,” a spokesman for Lutece Falco told Le Parisien newspaper. “We are human beings able to get around by ourselves - we have done for ten years without it causing a problem. We are not the lapdog of PSG.”
There is also an issue of cost for the supporters. A train fare to the port city will cost €100, whereas a supporter need only pay €60 to get there by bus.
As a result, many fans will boycott the trip, though the club have indicated that half the tickets for the encounter have already been sold.
PSG do not appear to be particularly pleased with the limit of tickets that Marseille have placed upon them and are set to reciprocate when les Phoceens travel to the capital on February 28. Initially OM wanted 2,000 spots in the Parc des Princes.

Kidderminster Harriers - Oxford United - 14/11/2009
Source : worcesternews.co.uk
Oxford fans were closely policed
FOOTBALL fans travelling home to Oxford on Saturday were kept at Worcester’s Foregate Street station by police to avoid any trouble.
Worcester police and British Transport Police combined to stop the Oxford United fans causing trouble in the city centre.
Officers from both forces worked together to convince around 200 fans – on their way back from a 3-1 defeat by Kidderminster Harriers - not to leave the platform as they waited for a connecting service.
Chief Inspector Sharon Gibbons, head of operations for South Worcestershire, said: “From an incident earlier in the day – when officers were called to the Postal Order public house when an estimated 200 Oxford fans were inside – we recognised the potential problems that might occur when those same fans were making their return journey.
“Working closely with British Transport Police - who are responsible for maintaining law-and-order on our railways - we took firm action to prevent any of the fans who were waiting to change trains at Foregate Street leaving the station and - potentially - causing problems in Worcester on Saturday evening.”
Police were called to the Postal Order in Foregate Street after the pub became packed with Oxford fans, although no touble was reported.
• One Oxford fan was arrested in Kidderminster and - under the 1986 Public Order Act - was later charged with using threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour with intent to cause someone to believe that unlawful violence would be used against them.
He is due to appear at Kidderminster Magistrates Court on Thursday, November 26.

Cyprus - Apoel and Omonia fans clash - 15/11/2009

Cyprus police say a man has been critically injured after fans from rival football clubs clashed in the capital.
Spokesman Thomas Efthymiou says the 20-year-old man is on a respirator at Nicosia General Hospital and was listed Monday in critical, but stable condition.
Efthymiou says about 100 fans from cross-town rivals APOEL and Omonia clashed at a five-a-side field on Nicosia's outskirts Sunday night.
The brawl started when a group of traveling APOEL fans stopped on the side of a highway near the grounds where Omonia fans were playing. Other details were unclear.
Efthymiou says three suspects have been arrested and three are being sought.

French riots after Algeria-Egypt match - 18/11/2009
Source: mail + Reuters + 20Minutes.fr + AFP
Football fans battled with police, torched cars in cities across France and looted a supermarket after Algeria beat Egypt to qualify for the World Cup finals, police said.
Police arrested around 150 people in the trouble that flared late Wednesday after thousands of Algeria fans took to the streets to celebrate the team's triumph that secured it a spot at the 2010 tournament in South Africa.
France has a large community of Algerian origin and about 12,000 of them turned out on the Champs Elysees in Paris to fete their team's win.
Police intervened when some revellers began throwing bottles and other projectiles and smashing shop windows, a police spokesman said.
Similar violent scenes took place in Marseille in the south, Lyon in the centre-east as well as in some northern towns, and youths set fire to around 150 vehicles in cities across the country.
Trouble-makers burst into a supermarket in Vaulx-en-Velin in the Lyon suburbs and made off with electronic goods and telephones, police said.
Six police officers were injured in the incidents.

Station clash SAFC fans rebailed - 19/11/2009
Source : Sunderland Echo
All 44 football fans arrested after a clash with police have been rebailed. Supporters suspected of involvement in violence after a Sunderland AFC pre-season friendly on August 8, must now wait until at least December 21 to find out if they will face court.
And it means some Black Cats fans caught up in the incident at Newcastle Central Station will stay temporarily banned from the Stadium of Light – despite not yet being charged.
The national Football Supporters' Federation (FSF), which has taken up the fans' case, said those who had their season tickets deactivated while the investigation remained open would have to suffer missing more games than they should have to.
FSF spokesman Peter Daykin said: "Most of the fans have lost about £100-worth of football with no comeback, while the club has ignored the principle of natural justice, that someone is innocent until proven guilty.
"And there's nothing to say that in December the police won't do exactly the same and rebail people for another couple of months."
Sunderland AFC has previously said that anyone arrested for football-related violence automatically has their season ticket suspended until the result of the investigation is known – as stated in the rules when tickets are bought.
The club also said that safety and security of supporters and staff is paramount and the terms and conditions of issue of season tickets state they can be removed at any time.
More than 3,100 football fans of clubs across Europe have signed a petition on the FSF website calling for club chairman Niall Quinn to reinstate those already battling to clear their names with Northumbria Police.
They include football pioneer Brian Lomax, who received an OBE for his services to the sport. Mr Lomax, a founder of the very first supporters' trust at Northampton Town in 1992, said: "I signed the petition because it seems to be right."
At least three SAFC fans were hospitalised following the incident at the Central Station, as they returned from the match in Edinburgh.
Northumbria Police claimed supporters were intent on causing trouble and had pre-arranged a city-centre fight with a gang attached to Newcastle United FC.
But the Wearsiders say they were innocent and police mismanaged the situation and used excessive force.
An Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) investigation cleared the force, but was slammed by the FSF as inadequate for not taking statements from witnesses.
An official complaint was made about the IPCC report, but is on hold while the criminal cases continue.
