| 26 Swiss hooligans sentenced for "Shame of Basel" - 06/11/2008
Source : The Canadian Press
A Swiss court imposed fines and prison sentences on 26 hooligans involved in a violent pitch invasion after FC Zurich beat FC Basel in injury time of a championship-deciding match.
The 2-1 defeat dashed Basel's hopes of winning the Swiss league title in 2006 and taking part in the lucrative Champions League the following season.
Judge Lukas Faesch imposed penalties ranging from fines of several thousand Swiss francs to a prison terms of nine months, suspended over four years, for a 22-year-old man who attacked Zurich player Iulian Filipescu.
None of the defendants were identified in line with Swiss privacy laws.
"If you can't stand to see your team lose, then you shouldn't be in a stadium, and you're not a fan," Faesch told the accused.
The incident, which became known as "The Shame of Basel," saw hundreds of people invade the pitch after Filipescu scored the winning goal in the third minute of injury time at Basel's St. Jakob Park. A drawn match would have given Basel the title.
Basel police spokesman Klaus Mannhardt said he was satisfied with the sentences and hoped they would stop others from committing violence at football games in the future.

| Berlin prepares for British hooligans - 06/11/2008
Source : Middle East Times
Berlin is getting ready to ward off an army of British hooligans who are expected to flock to the German capital for a soccer match. The national teams of Germany and England will face off in a friendly match on Nov. 19 in Berlin's Olympic Stadium. Yet the atmosphere may not be friendly at all, as Berlin police expect numerous violent hooligans trying to travel to Germany to disturb the history-laden match.
That's why more than 1,000 police could be dispatched to the city from Nov. 18-20, the Berliner Zeitung newspaper reported. Hooligan experts from Britain will join German local, state and federal police to safeguard the city and prevent mass brawls from breaking out. Authorities are even considering keeping the most notorious British hooligans under house arrest.
Yet it's not that all German fans are peaceful. Nearly 700 potential hooligans live in Berlin alone, the newspaper said.
"We are facing a big mission," a police spokesman told the newspaper.
The Olympic Stadium will be sold out, accommodating 74,228 fans on that day.

| Football clubs to be responsible for stadium security - 06/11/2008
Source : ČTK
Czech football and ice hockey clubs are fully prepared to shoulder responsibility for security at their stadiums during matches as of next year, Czech deputy police chief Ivan Bilek has told CTK.
The police will stop monitoring matches at stadiums as from January 1, 2009.
The first league soccer club of Banik Ostrava, infamous for its violent rowdies, has already been successfully taking care for security during the team's home matches, Bilek recalled.
Czech clubs will have to deal with soccer hooligans using their own guards. If a club fears that the guard would not manage the situation, it will have to hire a security agency.
The police will continue to monitor security around stadiums.
Bilek said clubs should start databases of their problematic fans.
Miroslav Platil, security manager of the Czech Football Association (CMFS), confirmed that nearly all issues between the police and the clubs have been solved.
"We have received a handbook from the Interior Ministry that sets all conditions," he said.
The only thing to be dealt with is to define the rules for databases of problematic fans in such a way that they do not contravene legislation on personal data protection, Platil told CTK.
He said the police would still monitor some risky matches.

| Hajduk Split again fined by UEFA - 06/11/2008
Hajduk was fined yesterday with 50.000 EUR by UEFA for burning flares in the 2nd leg of UEFA Cup in August against La Coruna in Split. It is the biggest amount in the club´s long history of paying fines. The club has already been fined for the first game in Spain with 4.000 CHF for fireworks and also for both games in the first qualifying round against Birkirkara from Malta. For the game in Split they were fined for 5.000 CHF and after fights against Maltese Police with 30.000 CHF. Moreover, afer this riots there are no Hajduk fans allowed to attend the next 2 away games of their team in Europe.
It is to say that Hajduk twice has been thrown out from Euro competitions, 1 year after riots against Tottenham in 1984 in Split and 2 years after troubles against O. Marseille in 1987.

They also burned some flares during the game and when police attempted to pick out some BBB, fights broke out with OB. 5 Croats were nicked after the game and there were also some incidents with the Yids. ************************************************************* Source : InTheNews.co.uk Spurs facing fines for fan trouble Tottenham Hotspur could be fined by Uefa after trouble erupted in their 4-0 win over Dinamo Zagreb. Five people were arrested for public order offences last night while Croatian fans clashed with stewards after supporters lit flares. Uefa will wait for the report of the match before deciding if Spurs will be punished, with a fine being most likely. The trouble marred the victory which was inspired by a Darren Bent hat-trick that puts Spurs second in group D. The north London club could also face a fine by the Football Association after a series of incidents in the Premier League. They are being investigated over the racial abuse given to defender Sol Campbell when he played for Portsmouth against his former club in September. Also, a number of fans ran onto the pitch at the Emirates Stadium to celebrate Spurs' comeback in the 4-4 draw against rivals Arsenal. Before the Dinamo game, Spurs had warned their fans to behave after a coin-throwing incident in last month's 2-1 loss to Stoke City at White Hart Lane. A club statement said: "As a result of both of these incidents, we are now the subject of investigations by the Football Association." Spurs are expected to give another warning to supporters ahead of Sunday's clash with Manchester City at Eastlands.

| Linfield FC - Cliftonville - 04/11/2008Source : Goal.com Linfield Player Hit By RocketThe County Antrim Shield was marred by shocking scenes after a Linfield player was struck by rocket thrown by an opposition supporter... The heated rivalry between Belfast foes Cliftonville and Linfield was taken to dangerous extremes shortly after the final whistle of their cup clash last night. Conor Hagan was struck by a live firework which exploded mere moments after bouncing off his back. Medics and players from both teams rushed to the 26-year-old's aid, but no major damage was done. "I was lying on the ground disgusted with the result and didn’t see the firework coming," Hagan told the Belfast Telegraph after his side's 2-1 defeat. "It hit me on the back when it went off and it was more the bang that scared me and I was in shock for few seconds. "It could have been a lot worse so I am relieved that I am not injured." The incident followed a series of brawls between both sets of supporters prior to the match. The clubs share a history of sectarian scuffles; Linfield are largely protestant-supported, while Cliftonville draw a predominately Catholic crowd. Fireworks are in mass circulation in Northern Ireland, and the rest of the United Kingdom, for Bonfire Night. ************************************************************* Source : Lisburn Today + Belfast Telegraph 'COMPLETE FOOLS'
PSNI set to investigate firework incidentLINFIELD'S Conor Hagan has branded fans who let off a firework which struck him on the back following Cliftonville's County Antrim Shield victory on Tuesday night 'complete fools'. The PSNI have announced they will be investigating the incident, which occurred at the end of the match at Windsor Park and left the shaken player needing medical attention. Hagan escaped serious injury during the incident, but the former Cliftonville player said those who let off the fireworks were complete fools. "I do not know if it was aimed at me or not. I am just glad I was not injured. "It bounced off my back and the noise shook me more than anything. I was scared." Hagan was hit on the back by a rocket fired by from the Cliftonville support seated in the North Stand just after the final whistle on Tuesday night. Police have CCTV coverage of the game and also TV coverage. The IFA last night said it would be conducting an investigation after getting the referees report. "This is a very serious matter and will be dealt with by our disciplinary committee. We will meet the Co Antrim FA and the two clubs," said a spokesman. Co Antrim FA secretary Brian Dummigan said the incident will form part of a normal de-briefing on the final. "We will give everyone an opportunity to go through this although this is the normal process for all finals." Linfield manager David Jeffrey condemned the person who threw the firework. He commented: "It put a very bad reflection on the evening. Obviously you have to think first and foremost about the safety of the players and thankfully Conor Hagan was not seriously injured, it was more of a shock. If you take the worst scenario, if it had hit him in the face or the eye, the severity of the incident cannot be underestimated. "But putting it into perspective, it was one idiot who did it, it would be wrong to lambast all of the Cliftonville supporters for the actions of those that cling on."

| Swiss hooligans sentenced to prison for Shame of Basel - 07/11/2008
Source: ESPN
Basel police spokesman Klaus Mannhardt said he was satisfied with the sentences and hoped they would stop others from committing violence at soccer games in the future.

| Bochum - Werder Bremen - 08/11/2008Source : Bild + AFP Allofs praises Werder fans for rejecting neo NazisOn the 70th anniversary of Kristallnacht, manager Klaus Allofs has praised Werder Bremen's travelling fans for rejecting a gang of Neo-nazis who flew a banned flag from World War II after the 0-0 draw at Bochum. After Saturday's Bundesliga match, German Police arrested five supporters who flew a Third Reich flag - an illegal act in Germany - from the section of the Rewirpower stadium in Bochum designated for Werder fans. But the remaining band of Bremen supporters were quick to start chanting ‘Nazis Out!’ after the arrests. Allofs told German tabloid Bild on Sunday: ‘Some of our fans outed themselves as Nazis, but they were quickly rejected by our other fans. ‘It was a good action by our real supporters who didn't want to be identified with such a thing.’ The incident in Bochum came just before Sunday's anniversary of the Kristallnacht pogrom. On the night of November 9-10 1938, also known as the Night of Broken Glass, Nazi thugs plundered Jewish businesses and attacked Jews throughout Germany. Around 90 people died in the violence and around 30,000 Jewish men rounded up that night were deported to concentration camps. The day is being remembered here with a series of memorial events. | Bury Town - Alfreton Town - FA Cup - 08/11/2008Source : East Anglian Daily Times Bury's big day marred by violenceBURY Town's big day in the FA Cup was marred by a disturbance that saw a 60-year-old fan needing hospital treatment for a head injury. Club bosses looked on in horror at half-time at the club's match against Alfreton Town in Derbyshire on Saturday when violence erupted in the clubhouse. The injured supporter from Suffolk needed 11 stitches to a head wound after he was hit by a table sent flying by hooligans. The club's fantastic FA Cup run ended in a brave 4-2 defeat in the first round proper on Saturday. But the half-time incident soured the occasion for some fans and officials. Police drafted in about 15 officers and two dog units to control the yobs. Russell Ward, Bury Town chairman, said the injured fan had travelled home for treatment at West Suffolk Hospital. “The club will obviously be speaking to the FA and the police about this incident,” he said. Adrian Lewis, vice-chairman, said he was afraid for the safety of his 16-year-old son Matthew, who has learning difficulties. “I was in the middle of it all - these hooligans turned the good banter half-time had started with into terrifying scenes,” he said. “They decided to start chucking tables and glasses about and unfortunately a 60-year-old Bury fan was struck in the head - first by a table and then by a glass. It was a very scary situation.” The victim was initially taken to the Kingsmill Hospital at nearby Mansfield but decided to travel home with his fellow supporters and was treated at the Bury hospital on Saturday evening. Bury were leading the tie at half-time but Mr Lewis, who is also managing director of the club's main sponsor Frames Conservatories Direct, said he did not believe the half-time scoreline was what sparked the violence. “These people hadn't come for the football they had come to cause trouble - hooligans pushed down into the lower leagues because they're so well known elsewhere,” he said. “What happened was a great shame because everyone there was so up for the match - the whole town of Bury was up for it.” Insp Bob Mee, of Derbyshire police, said officers were drafted into the club at just before 4pm on Saturday and he confirmed a Bury fan had been injured. He was unable to comment on the suggestion that “professional” football hooligans were behind the violence but promised the incident would be fully investigated. | |
