Police at Bristol Airport to catch hooligans - 14/11/2008

Source : Evening Post

Police are carrying out an operation at Bristol Airport to stop football hooligans flying out for the England friendly game in Germany next week.
The 'beat-the-hooligan operation' intends to stop those with the potential to cause violence and disorder in Berlin.
Avon and Somerset police has already run operations this year with the airport to prevent potential troublemakers flying out the UK.
This operation aims to detect and arrest those with Football Banning Orders who have failed to surrender their passports and may try to leave the country.
Fans issued with FBO's are prohibited from travelling out of the country when England has matches abroad such as the game on November 19.
They are also required to surrender their passports and are required to report to their local police station.
A FBO prevents attendance at any regulated match for a period of between three and five years - if the individual is not subjected to a custodial sentence.
For those who are imprisoned the banning order extends to a period of between six and 10 years.
Other conditions requested on a FBO may include exclusion zones around stadium before and after home fixtures, a day-long ban on travel to towns and cities, where away matches are being played.
Football Intelligence desk officer Roger Thayer said: "We have well-rehearsed plans, which we roll out for England's away matches.
"This helps to provide reassurance to genuine fans travelling to support their national team, as well as others flying from the airport.
"We currently have 59 football banning orders operating in the police force area and all in receipt of them will be expected to surrender their passports if held, to their local police station ahead of next week's match in Berlin."
Police in Avon and Somerset work in partnership with the Home Office and the United Kingdom Football Policing Unit.
Together they publish lists of fans subject to FBO's who have failed to surrender their passports and may try to fly out of the UK using an airport outside the area, where they live.
Around 200 people flew from Bristol International Airport earlier this year for England's World Cup qualifying matches in Barcelona and Croatia.
Officers stopped three people for further enquiries before they were allowed to continue their journey.
The new operation at BIA form part of a national ports operation to ensure that fans subject to FBO's do not try to leave the country.
The aim is to prevent potential troublemakers from travelling abroad to cause violence and disorder in cities, where England matches are being played.

Cyprus : It’s time to send a serious message on hooliganism - 14/11/2008

Source : Cyprus Mail

WEEKENDS in Cyprus have become synonymous with hooliganism, every week seemingly more violent, in an escalation of senseless thuggery that is threatening to destroy sport on the island.

The latest incidents broke out last Saturday, one at a football match, the other at a game of basketball. The football violence saw away fans tearing the stands apart to hurl it onto the pitch, fighting pitched battles with police, and eventually setting fire to part of the stadium.

Five people were injured and €50,000 worth of damage was caused, with a physiotherapy room completely gutted by the blaze. In the basketball match, it was the home fans who went on the rampage, pelting stones as the rival team left the court and smashing windows. Four people were injured including a trainer and a player and €3,000 worth of damage was caused.

To be fair, the authorities have been trying to crack down on the problem, which is fast spiralling out of control. Police now regularly order referees to stop matches when repeated warnings fail to stop the hooligans, while CCTV footage is allowing the identification and prosecution of these mindless thugs. Indeed, six people were arrested immediately after Saturday’s football violence and police released photos of another six caught in flagrante by the cameras.

But it is clearly not enough. On Monday, the Justice Minister warned that the next step would be to play games behind closed doors. Such a threat needs to be put into force as soon as possible. Clubs whose fans cause such trouble should be ordered to play the next few home games (how many would depend on the seriousness of the offence) in front of empty stands. Such punishment should be backed up by the Football Association docking points from offending clubs.

Such a double whammy might at last wrench the clubs out of their complacency – a complacency that verges on complicity when you hear some club officials almost justifying their fans’ behaviour by blaming refereeing decisions for their anger. But if they suddenly find themselves losing gate receipts, or even worse, missing out on a lucrative European slot or facing relegation because of points lost for bad behaviour, then they might at last sober up and face their responsibilities.

For the hooligans, their club is like a tribe, a street gang or a political militia, their behaviour fed by the inflammatory nature of sport in Cyprus. Only when the clubs stop pandering to their ultras and instead turf them out of the stadiums with clear condemnations of their hooligans and lifetime bans for all convicted offenders, will sport slowly start the long path to rehabilitation as a wonderful form of entertainment.

Saturdays should be about sporting heroes and inspiring achievements. Instead they have become about anger, violence and destruction. We want our sport back, we want fathers to be able to take their children to the big match. But if sporting events are to continue as a platform for tribal violence, they have no reason even to exist.

Six-year ban for Sunderland fan - 15/11/2008

Source : Sunderland Echo

This yob has escaped jail for hurling a traffic cone at rival supporters during the Wear-Tyne derby clashes.

Sunderland magistrates heard that the cone thrown by Paul Thompson, a Black Cats season ticket holder for 12 years, may have been responsible for injuring a Newcastle fan.

The 35-year-old, who admitted using threatening behaviour on the way to the Stadium of Light on October 25, was given 12 weeks' jail, suspended for 12 months.

The dad-of-two, a site worker, was also banned from all regulated football matches in England and Wales for six years.

Prosecutor David Richardson said a police officer saw fighting break out, then Thompson was seen to "pick up a large traffic cone and throw it.

"It was described as hurting someone."

Magistrates were shown a picture from the scene of a man lying injured on the ground.

Defending, Angus Westgarth said it was not clear whether Thompson's actions may have injured the supporter – who declined to make a complaint to police – but his client accepts he may have done.

He said that Thompson, of Commercial Street, Brandon, County Durham, was not "seeking out Newcastle fans," but came across trouble breaking out when he walked to the ground with friends.

Mr Westgarth said Thompson was trying to get out of the way as rival fans moved towards his group, and tripped over a traffic cone, which he then threw "out of embarrassment or recklessness," adding: "He didn't think of the possible consequences."

The match saw Sunderland record their first home win over Newcastle for 28 years.

However, lifelong fan Thompson did not see any of it, having been arrested.

"He was looking at four walls and wondering what the heck was going to happen to him," said Mr Westgarth.

As well as the suspended sentence and football banning order – which prevents Thompson from going within a specified area around the Stadium of Light on match days four hours before and after kick-off – he was also given a three-month curfew order, to be monitored by electronic tag.

Panathinaikos draws 1-1 at Larissa in Greek league game marred by rioting

ATHENS, Greece — Brazilian midfielder Cleyton came off the bench to score a second-half equalizer for Panathinaikos and salvage a 1-1 draw against Larissa in the Greek league Saturday.

Maciej Zurawski had put Larissa ahead in the 52nd minute.

But the game was marred by rioting when Panathinaikos and Larissa fans tossed flares and other projectiles at each other in the stands, forcing the referee to suspend the game for 10 minutes. No injuries or arrests were reported.

The draw moved Panathinaikos to fourth place with 16 points, four behind league leader Olympiakos, which hosts second-place PAOK on Sunday.

On the pitch, Larissa was more aggressive from kickoff and came close to scoring in the fifth when a powerful shot by Walter Iglesias from outside the area sailed over Mario Galinovic's crossbar.

Zurawski made it 1-0 with a thumping header from a cross by defender Ilias Kotsios.

Cleyton substituted for Giorgos Karagounis in the 60th and levelled seven minutes later with a scissor-kick from Mikael Nilsson's cross.

Gilberto Silva almost scored a winner for Panathinaikos in the 90th, but his shot from the six-yard area went over the crossbar.

Also Saturday, it was: Aris 1, Asteras 1 and AEK 0, Panserraikos 0.

On Sunday, it's: Ergotelis versus Thrasivoulos, Levadiakos versus OFI, Panthrakikos versus Xanthi and Panionios versus Iraklis.

Newcastle United - Wigan Athletic - 15/11/2008

Newcastle United fan held over Kinnear protest

A FRUSTRATED Newcastle fan was arrested on his way to the dug-out to confront Magpies’ boss Joe Kinnear.

The incident happened half-way through the second half of United’s lack-lustre performance against Wigan Athletic at St James’s Park on Saturday.

A Toon supporter marched down from the Gallowgate end to make his way onto the track.

Spotted by a ground steward, the fan was reportedly making his way to the dug-out to make his feelings known to the manager.

However, he was detained while police arrived to escort him from the ground.

Although no violence or threatening behaviour was used towards playing staff or United officials, Northumbria Police said the arrest was made as a protection for their safety. Steven Gordon, 30, of Stanton Street, Newcastle, was led away as television cameras covering the game homed in on the trouble.

Chief Supt Neil Mackay who heads Northumbria Police football unit said: "A fan was arrested and charged with making his way onto the playing area."

Gordon who was bailed to appear before Newcastle magistrates on November 27, could face a ground ban.

Wigan went in at half-time with a lead thanks to a Ryan Taylor goal in the third minute.

The arrested fan missed Michael Owen’s equaliser and Obafemi Martins’ effort which put them ahead before former Toon star Titus Bramble snatched a share of the points with a goal in the 89th minute.

The city centre was full of ob and policevans.. Roda tried to attack us and we went out of the pub but police intervened quickly with batons and dogs.. Violence at Uruguay football match

Uruguay's football championship has been suspended after fans fought a vicious battle on the pitch.

Trouble erupted after Danubio beat Nacional 1-0 to overtake their opponents and go top of the table on Sunday.

Shortly after the final whistle, Nacional fans broke down the fencing at the tiny Jardines del Hipodromo stadium and invaded the pitch.

At one point, they managed to snatch a Danubio flag from home fans, who were enraged and also invaded the field.

Argentina: Independiente - River Plate - 16/11/2008

Source: Herald Tribune

River Plate supporters hijack city bus

Sixty supporters of Argentina's River Plate football team were being held by police Monday after hijacking a bus and bullying its driver to speed up in a vain effort to make the start of a match, the second football related hijacking in less than a week.

More than a hundred supporters, including 25 minors, were arrested Sunday afternoon after seizing control of the city bus to make the kickoff against Independiente in Avellaneda, a town on the southern outskirts of Buenos Aires.

Fifty-three were released from custody Sunday night, while 60 other supporters were still being held Monday, according to local police.

The fans — who Police say also robbed two small shops in downtown Buenos Aires before getting on the bus — missed the game, which River won 1-0.

Last week, fans of an Argentine second-division team Chacarita were so desperate to get to a game on time that they hijacked two buses and forced the drivers at knifepoint to go faster. Police said they also robbed several passengers.

Sixty-three men and three women were arrested and charged, with most released from custody, police said Friday.

Chacarita beat Talleres in San Martin, on the outskirts of Buenos Aires, 3-2.

Again, the hijackers missed the game.

Blackpool FC - Preston North End - 16/11/2008

Behaviour warning for derby fans

Football fans were warned to behave ahead of the Lancashire derby clash between Blackpool and Preston.

Almost 10,000 fans packed Bloomfield Road for the Championship fixture on Sunday afternoon, won 3-1 by Preston.

Town centre pubs and bars were kept closed until 15 minutes before the kick-off in a bid to avert trouble.

A substantial policing operation was in place before and after the fixture and there were no reports of any incidents on Sunday afternoon.

Match commander Supt Richard Debicki said: "Out intention for this match is simple - to ensure that genuine fans and supporters enjoy themselves," he said.

"It's a local derby that lots of people look forward to, and our job is to make sure that people can watch the match safely."

Mr Debicki added: "My message to anybody who might think about causing problems is to stay away because the police will take action against you, making arrests where necessary."

Police 'spot' England hooligans - 17/11/2008

Source: BBC

Police "spotters" are at Manchester airport to prevent football hooligans travelling to Berlin for the England friendly match against Germany.

Both undercover and uniformed officers will be stationed at the airport until after the game on Wednesday.

Potential troublemakers will be stopped from travelling and required to attend court with police applying for a football banning order.

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) said travellers will be "closely monitored".

The Football Banning Order Authority (UKFBOA) has sent out letters to those who are subject to banning orders.

False passport

During the Champions League Final earlier this year, GMP spotters in Moscow identified a known troublemaker and found he had travelled using a false passport.

He was later sentenced to six months in prison.

Det Insp Kevin Fitzpatrick, of GMP's Football Intelligence Unit, said: "GMP is committed to preventing known or potential troublemakers from travelling to Berlin for this fixture.

"The message is clear: anyone who is trying to travel who is either a person subject to a football banning order or a known troublemaker will be identified and punished appropriately.

"That said the majority of fans travelling will be law abiding genuine supporters.

"We are determined to stop known troublemakers from spoiling the enjoyment of matches for genuine fans."

Football hooligans warned over Berlin match

Known hooligans planning to travel to Berlin for the England clash with Germany on Wednesday have been warned not to attend.

Operation Wigmore will target known or potential troublemakers travelling from Manchester Airport.

Any identified will be prevented from travelling, have their passport seized and will be required to attend Manchester Magistrates' Court within 24 hours.

A police spokesman said: "We will make an application to the court for a football banning order, which if granted, lasts between three to five years."

To enforce this intelligence led operation, plain clothed Football Intelligence and uniformed police officers will be stationed at the airport until the game is finished on the Wednesday evening.

Greater Manchester Police will also be rigorously enforcing banning orders that restrict the movements of known troublemakers before the match.

The Football Banning Order Authority (UKFBOA) has sent out letters to specific people who are subject to Banning Orders.

The recipients must follow certain courses of action, such as reporting to a police station on the day of the match and surrendering their passport.

Any breaches of the conditions will be treated seriously.

During the Champions League Final earlier this year, GMP spotters in Moscow identified a known troublemaker out of the thousands of fans in attendance and established he had travelled using a false passport. He was later given six months in prison.

The spokesman added: "The fact we were able to identify a known troublemaker among the thousands of fans in Moscow and bring about a successful conviction shows we will not tolerate football hooligans at home or abroad."

Detective Inspector Kevin Fitzpatrick, of GMP's Football Intelligence Unit, said: "GMP is committed to preventing known or potential troublemakers from travelling to Berlin for this fixture. On a regular basis we have previously identified and subsequently banned these individuals at court.

"That is why we will be closely monitoring those travelling to Berlin for the game at the airport. The message is clear: anyone who is trying to travel who is either a person subject to a football banning order or a known troublemaker will be identified and punished appropriately.

"That said the majority of fans travelling will be law abiding genuine supporters. We are determined to stop known troublemakers from spoiling the enjoyment of matches for genuine fans."

Luxemburgo expects more trouble from Palmeiras fans - 17/11/08

Source : Xinhua

After Sunday's disappointing 5-2 loss to Flamengo, Palmeiras head coach Vanderlei Luxemburgo is expecting more violent episode from the team's fans base.

Luxemburgo was assaulted on Friday night before leaving Sao Paulo to travel to Rio de Janeiro, ending up with a fractured elbow in the confusion.

"I received a phone call warning me that some fans would be at the airport. They may be in the airports in Rio de Janeiro and SaoPaulo," said Luxemburgo, who used words like "ambush" and "gang" to describe one of the fan groups of the team, Mancha.

The coach criticized the airport security of Congon has, saying if the security were up to par, the incident last Friday would not have taken place.

Luxemburgo also said that the police should have acted quicker in escorting the fans out of the airport.

"I was surprised when we arrived at the airport to see the large number of fans. Most of them were not passengers on the flight. They were in groups with shirts and shorts with the team's logo.

"The security needed to have identified them and escorted them out of the area. I was later offered to be taken to a private room for my own protection. However, I rejected the offer because I would then lose my right to being a free citizen," added Luxemburgo.

England supporters held by German police ahead of friendly in Berlin

Seven England supporters are being held by German police after a number of fights and minor clashes marred the build-up to tonight's friendly international in Berlin.

Five supporters were taken into custody following a series of minor disturbances last night and early this morning, while two more were detained when a number of England fans mistook a group of plainclothes policemen for Germany supporters and began throwing bottles at them.

As soon as the undercover officers put on their police vests and called for reinforcements, the England fans fled from the scene at the capital's Alexanderplatz. The two detained England fans could face charges of causing disturbances.

Up to 8,000 England fans are expected to attend the friendly although police from both countries have worked together to identify about 140 potential hooligans from England and 17 violent Germans fans. Nine fans were not allowed to leave England.

England and German fans clash

German police arrested three hooligans on Wednesday as England and German football fans clashed just before the two sides' friendly international in Berlin, taking the number of arrests to 15.

Police struggled to keep the two sets of fans apart outside Berlin's historic Olympic Stadium as fans threw bottles at each other outside the entrance to the historic Olympic Stadium.

The situation calmed down once the match started at 8:45 pm (1945 GMT), and no extra police had been drafted in because of the clashes to add to the 1,900 officers already in place for the match, a police spokesman told AFP.

Police have made 15 arrests in total since almost 2,000 England fans began arriving in the German capital on Tuesday for the match and around 65 restraining orders have been issued, the spokesman said.

"Most of those arrested are English," the spokesman added.

In the early hours of Wednesday morning, police arrested five English supporters for breach of the peace and for actual bodily harm.

German sports agency SID said police arrested the fans and issued restraining orders against 15 England supporters.

Seventeen German fans, who are known hooligans, were also detained by police. During the arrests, one England fan received a facial injury and was treated in hospital.

According to German police information, some 1,800 England fans arrived through Berlin's Tegel and Schoenefeld airports on Wednesday and 140 high-risk fans, identified by British police officers, were detained on arrival.

Police added that nine known English hooligans were barred from travelling to Germany.

Five potential football hooligans intercepted

POLICE have intercepted five potential football hooligans as they attempted to travel to Berlin for England's friendly against Germany on Wednesday.
As part of a national Football Policing Unit operation targeting known trouble makers in the run up to the international, Northumbria Police took a two pronged approach; arresting people who were in breach of their Football Banning Orders and patrolling Newcastle International Airport for potential hooligans.

The purpose of Football Banning Orders is to prevent known football hooligans from causing further trouble at home and abroad.

In the run up to an international fixture on Wednesday, people with banning orders had to surrender their passports to police, those who failed to do so risked arrest.

Chief Inspector Bruce Storey of Northumbria Police's Football Unit, said: "Football Banning Orders are in place to prevent those intent on causing violence or disorder from attending matches which means that genuine football fans can go to a game and enjoy it safely.

"We want people to be able to enjoy the sport rather than worry about the behaviour of the person sitting next to them in the stands.

"Football Banning Orders are one of the tools we can use to help us do this."

In total 30 local people failed to abide by the conditions of their orders and of these 11 have now been arrested by police and will be appearing in court in the next few weeks.

Taking the operation one step further, Northumbria Police supported a nationwide operation and had officers conduct an initiative at Newcastle International Airport in the days running up to the game.

On Tuesday morning officers checked five men who were travelling to the Germany England match.

These men gave officers concern that they could cause disorder at the match and, using football related legislation, the men were detained and placed before Newcastle Magistrates' Court with a view to placing banning orders upon them.

These matters have been adjourned until December.

Thirty arrests after England and German fans clash

German police reported Thursday they made a total of 30 arrests in the wake of England's 2-1 win here over Germany, with both sets of fans generally praised for their good behaviour.

The arrests were made between Tuesday evening and the end of Wednesday night's match at Berlin's Olympic Stadium.

"We are satisfied, things remained relatively calm," said a spokesman for Berlin police.

In the worst of the violence, three hooligans were arrested outside the stadium just an hour before kick off as rival groups of fans clashed and bottles were thrown, a police spokesman told AFP.

Three German and three English supporters were slightly wounded, while two police officers also had to be treated for injuries, none of which were regarded as serious, and 1,900 police were deployed in the capital.

But after the match the area outside the stadium cleared quickly and most of the England fans, happy at their well-deserved 2-1 victory, flew back home on Wednesday evening.

At least four flights had been scheduled to leave Berlin after the match and extra trains had been laid on to take fans to the city's two airports.

England fans have a bad name for hooliganism in Germany and, of the 1,800 supporters who arrived through Berlin's two airports, 140 high-risk fans identified by British police officers were detained on arrival.

Seventeen German fans, who are known hooligans, were also detained by police in the build-up to the game.

Police added that nine known English hooligans were barred from travelling to Germany.
