| Croatian Football Fans – Politicians 1:1 - ??/10/2008
Source: Javno
Deputy prime minister did not wish to comment on the open letter from the Bad Blue Boys football fans.
ZAGREB, CROATIA – The conflict between Croatian deputy Prime Minister Djurdja Adlesic and Dinamo FC supporters has taken on a new role on Tuesday. The Bad Blue Boys (Dinamo fans) have sent an open letter, stating their opinion about the government, without beating about the bush, and the new law on supporters. Above all, they point out that the new law was against the Constitution and inappropriate. Referring to numerous killings which make the citizens` skin crawl, the fans told Adlesic that they are currently not the cabinet`s number one concern.
The Iron Lady, as the media call her, did not wish to answer to the Bad Blue Boys this time. When we asked her what she though of the open letter, Adlesic replied that “she thought nothing”.
- We will have the chance to sit down together and talk – said the deputy PM.
We cannot believe that Adlesic felt afraid of the BBB, but what can be concluded is that she did not wish to stoop to a lower level: affrayment.
Nobody, not even the BBB can claim that there is no such problem as hooliganism. Everyone should deal with the matter seriously and point the finger at those who stain the name of their country or the club which they support, while playing abroad. Their act speaks most about them.
They are neither wussies or rascals; these are simple people who do not respect others.
Still, we can agree over one thing, football fans are not the sole problem in Croatia. We are talking about a group of people who should be stopped, but at the same time, those who misused their political positions to flirt with the mafia should be stopped as well.
The fans are right when they say security is not threatened when they take to the streets with scarves and banners, but when the streets look like Al Capone`s Chicago. Minors are turning into killers; police tardiness greatly contributes to us being afraid on our way to school; reporters are attacked because of freedom of speech and the mafia no longer chooses its victims.
Truly, who is responsible for all of this getting out of hand? There have been murders in Croatia before, as well as mafia showdowns, but the system has never been so powerless. Impotent to stand up to criminals, as well as hooligans. The Prague incident is not an isolated case; Croatia has witnessed numerous conflicts of various supporters, but nobody has reacted.
Recently, the issue of verbal insults heard from the stalls was opened, as if the problem had not existed before. Condemning such a thing is not the solution, but washing hands, we are at liberty to say.

| FA Threatens Fans With Life Bans After Sunderland Clashes - 27/10/2008
Source: http://www.buzzle.com
Police made 29 arrests as fan violence overshadowed Sunderland's 2-1 Wear-Tyne derby win against Newcastle
Football is always a game of risk but this Wear-Tyne derby was suffused with some exceptional gambles. None seemed bigger or backfired more than the decision to enforce minimal segregation between rival supporters - except, perhaps, the failure to offer Joey Barton greater protection when the Newcastle United substitute, and black sheep, warmed up.
So 29 arrests were made on a day which ended with a number of home fans spilling on to the pitch before scuffling with a small group of Toon Army rivals. Outside the stadium a police horse suffered minor burns when a moron threw a firework. Earlier a man was arrested for escaping the stands and taunting Shay Given after the goalkeeper's concession of the winner, a stunning free-kick from Kieran Richardson. Meanwhile Barton was showered by missiles and spittle as he limbered up.
The controversial midfielder attracted censure as well as sympathy for brazenly kissing the Newcastle badge on his tracksuit after a policeman advised him to restrict his stretching exercises to the technical area. Significantly, the infinitely more mature Given admitted he felt tempted to retaliate. "A few idiots came on to the pitch near me after Richardson's goal," he explained. "It was unsavory and I got abuse. It was hard to keep my temper. It got close to something happening. You feel low enough after conceding the goal, so the last thing you want is some idiot roaring abuse in your face."
The Football Association has launched an inquiry and is threatening lifetime bans. Nonetheless, ugly as certain moments were, things could hardly be said to have descended into 1970s-style anarchy. Chief Superintendent Neil Mackay of Northumbria Police, whose force has launched its own inquiry, reflected: "The vast majority of fans were well behaved, 29 arrests out a capacity crowd is low."
Similarly Sunderland's chairman, Niall Quinn, emphasized the bigger picture after Newcastle's first defeat on Wearside for 28 years. "Saturday was a fantastic day," he said. "A minority should not spoil it."
It is understood his club will not face FA sanctions. Indeed Sunderland - who, having sold the game out, could not leave banks of empty seats between rival fans - suggested the local constabulary might have been culpable. "There were 500 police on duty, segregation is a matter for them," said a spokesman.
The FA was more anxious to deter future offenders than apportion blame. "We will make sure that anyone involved in the unsavory scenes feels the full weight of the law," said its spokesman, Adrian Bevington. "That could mean a lifetime banning order."
As for the day's gamblers, the home manager Roy Keane did best. With the score 1-1 after 57 minutes he withdrew Dwight Yorke, his impressive midfielder, introduced Kenwyne Jones and switched from 4-5-1 to 4-4-2. Newly rehabilitated following a serious knee injury, the half-fit striker unnerved Newcastle's defence and helped El Hadji Diouf win the dead-ball chance from which Richardson struck the unstoppable winner over the wall and into the top corner.
Sunderland had led on 20 minutes when Djibril Cissé lashed Steed Malbranque's cross-shot beyond Given but slack marking from the otherwise excellent Anton Ferdinand soon permitted Shola Ameobi to head Joe Kinnear's side level following Geremi's free-kick. Ferdinand was far from the only notable in a game where Malbranque, Richardson, Cissé, Diouf and Pascal Chimbonda all shone, and the latter three celebrated on the pitch long after the final whistle.
"They've plugged into what we're all about," said Keane of the trio. "Every signing is a risk but I've not found them hard at all. I've signed other people who I'd have bet my life would have done well but, within a week, I'm thinking 'You're not for me'."
Kinnear insists his side are not doomed. "There's no chance we can go down," the club's interim manager said. "We have too much quality." Famous last words.

| Newcastle United pitch invader spared game ban - 29/10/2008Source : Evening Chronicle A PITCH invader has escaped a match ban.Toon fan Richard Bartle stormed the St James’s Park turf because he was so angry at the team’s performance. But he has escaped a football banning order, despite calls for all of Saturday’s derby day pitch invaders to be barred from games for life. Bartle, 32, was so frustrated at the Magpies’ 2-0 Carling Cup defeat to Tottenham, he sprinted onto the playing area with pal Tony Gallon after the final whistle. The pair staged the stunt to protest against players “not pulling their weight” but were arrested. Police told Newcastle Magistrates’ Court banning orders were needed against Bartle and Gallon. But Bartle, of Beaumont Terrace, Westerhope, Newcastle, contested the move and pleaded with the court to allow him to continue watching his beloved Toon Army. And despite also hearing of his criminal record, which includes 221 offences, magistrates let him off the hook and no ban was imposed. David Comb, prosecuting, said: “September 24 was a Wednesday and Newcastle United were playing an evening fixture in the League Cup against Tottenham Hotspur. They lost. “At 9.55pm, the game came to an end and Mr Bartle went onto the pitch and was detained by stewards. When challenged, he said ‘they are ****, you have got to demonstrate when it’s that bad’.” Giving evidence, Sgt Glenn Patterson said police treat the offence of running on the pitch so seriously, they were determined to secure a banning order. He said: “We believe the offence is so serious because, as can be seen from the events of the weekend, things can escalate very quickly.” Bartle said: “At the end of the game, we were incensed that people weren’t trying and they are getting paid fortunes a week. You cannot control that but someone like me or him would love just a little bit of St James’s Park in our lives, like having a piece or the turf or something, but they get to play on it all the time. “It was just a moment of madness and I just ran across the pitch to show that we were not happy with the game - it was just stupidity, it wasn’t planned, it was ridiculous really. By the halfway line, I was thinking ‘what have I done?’” The court was given details of trainee painter and decorator Bartle’s convictions, including 141 theft offences and five public order crimes. Bartle pleaded guilty to the offence and was fined £65, as well as being ordered to pay a £15 victim surcharge. He also told the court he wanted to be able to take his 15 month old son to matches in the future and was not given a football banning order. Gallon, 25, of Throckley, Newcastle, also pleaded guilty and was hit with the same financial penalty. He did not contest the order and was banned from all games in England and Wales for three years. After the hearing, Bartle said: “I do not want to be looked at in the same light as hooligans who organise fighting at matches. It was a moment of madness but I think there should be some sort of scale for dealing with people individually, instead of having to ban everyone for three years like they wanted to do with me.” | |

Source: mail (thanks to the sender)
Feyenoord lost the derby of Rotterdam against his little brother Sparta. Fans weren't pleased with this and tried to reach the players through the catacombs of the ground. Small fight with Stewards and security were the result. It seems also some small fights around the ground between both fans.

Juventus fan seriously hurt in attack by hooligans
A fan of Juventus was in intensive care in a Bologna hospital Thursday with a skull trauma suffered in a clash with hooligans. The 44-year-old man was assaulted by Bologna fans late Wednesday after a Serie A game the home side lost 2-1 against Juve.
He was reportedly trying to defend his son from a group of people who tried to take his black-and-white Juventus scarf.
The man from the nearby town of Modena was hit in the head by a stone and taken to Bologna's city hospital.

| Forest hooligans get police warning - 30/10/2008
Source : This is Nottingham
FOREST fans with a history of football violence got letters from police today warning them not to go to this weekend's clash with Derby County at Pride Park. Warnings were also being sent to problem Rams supporters ahead of the sell-out match, kicking off at 1.15pm on Sunday. Chief Inspector Steve Haylett, head of the Notts police football intelligence unit, said: "We are working closely with colleagues in Derbyshire and a full policing operation will begin in the early hours of Sunday morning. "There will be a very heavy police presence at Pride Park and my message to fans without a ticket would be don't bother travelling. "We will be taking extremely positive action against anyone seen causing trouble before, during or after the match." Police in Derbyshire have expressed fears that some Forest fans may be tempted to buy £120 tickets via the website www.worldticketshop.com – about four times the standard price – and get into Derby stands. But Insp Haylett said he was unaware of the website concerns, adding: "The match is a sell-out, so I am surprised there are websites offering tickets. "If anyone is sitting where they should not be they will be moved, and, if causing a disturbance, ejected from the ground." Last month, six Forest fans were banned from football matches for up to six years after violence erupted during a confrontation with Derby County fans outside The Waterfall pub in Derby in September 2007. One of the six, Nicky Spence, 24, of Blaise Close, Clifton, was also jailed for a year at Derby Crown Court after admitting affray. Three Derby County fans also received banning orders. The Post reported last month how arrests of Forest fans at away matches more than doubled last season. Police said that hooligans were getting younger and had begun using social networking sites, such as Bebo, to brag about fights. Arrests of Forest fans at the City Ground fell.

| Six more guilty of Charlton attack - 31/10/2008Source : Charlton Athletic Football Club website + SKY NEWS Six more men involved in a mass football-related disorder on a train in South London last year were found guilty on Friday. Seven men were put before Southwark Crown Court charged with violent disorder. Two men pleaded guilty, while the final four were found guilty by a jury following a three-week trial. One man was discharged. The end of the trial means 16 Crystal Palace supporters have now been convicted of their involvement in the disorder at Sydenham railway station on September 1st, 2007. British Transport Police (BTP) arrested the group during a series of dawn raids at addresses across South London, Sussex and Kent in November last year. The disorder occurred at about 2.20pm and involved a large group of males who boarded a train when it arrived at Sydenham station and began a series of random attacks on passengers within two carriages of the train. The train contained Charlton supporters travelling to that day's match at Selhurst Park plus members of the public including women, children and the elderly. "A 24-year-old Charlton fan suffered a broken nose in the incident,” said BTP Det Insp Keith Bennett. "Several other passengers were headbutted, punched and verbally abused during the fracas.” DI Bennett said Operation Dispatch was set up to investigate the violent disorder, and involved up to 150 officers from BTP as well as officers from the Metropolitan Police. Of the 16 men arrested, 12 pleaded guilty and four went to trial after being charged with violent disorder. Those already sentenced were handed prison terms of between 24 and 40 months for what the judge described as "mob conduct at its worst". They've also been issued football banning orders preventing them from attending matches or travelling on the railways for up to 10 years on matchdays. DI Bennett said the sentence and the bans should serve as a warning to hooligans that violence and disorder on the railways will not be tolerated. "Members of the travelling public, including law-abiding football fans, have the right to travel in safety on matchdays," he said. "The violence that ordinary members of the public were subjected to on the day in question was utterly appalling. These final guilty verdicts are a pleasing end to year-long investigation.” Charlton operations director Mick Everett said: "This was a totally unprovoked and vicious attack on our supporters travelling to the game and also members of the general public going about their daily business. "There is no place in football, nor indeed in society, for violent individuals such as these, and the British Transport Police should be applauded for the thorough and professional investigation that they have carried out over a lengthy period of time.” All six men will be sentenced at Southwark Crown Court on December 5th. The six thugs accused of rioting on a train at Sydenham railway station************************************************************* Source : BBC News Men guilty of football violence Four football hooligans who rampaged through train carriages in a "pre-planned riot" in south-east London have been found guilty of violent disorder. Two more Crystal Palace supporters had already admitted the same charges at Southwark Crown Court. The jury heard that parents tried to protect children during the attack on fans of rival club Charlton Athletic. Witnesses described the September 2007 violence as a "one-sided riot". The six men will be sentenced in December. The court heard chants of "kill them" and "get off our manor" rang out as people tried to escape the attack on two carriages as the train travelled between Sydenham and Penge East stations. 'Absolute mayhem' The attacks happened as fans made their way to a local derby between the south London rivals at Selhurst Park. The court heard witnesses had variously described the incident as "pandemonium", "absolute mayhem" and "one of the worst moments of my life". One told police it was as if "all hell had broken loose". The hooligans fled at Penge East station but police - who had responded to a series of 999 calls - chased after them and detained some of those involved. When CCTV footage of the attacks was later studied and showed who was involved, 150 officers took part in a string of co-ordinated arrests across south London, Sussex and Kent. Other fans jailed After 18 hours of deliberation over four days, the jury returned guilty verdicts against four London men - Clive Taylor, 35, of Marion Road, Thornton Heath; Carl Thomas, 40, of Foxley Road, Thornton Heath; Darren Bush, 39, of Woodside Green, Croydon; and Ashley White, 21, of Higher Drive, Purley. Two other men, Andrew Spicer, 38 of Hurst Road in Kennington, Ashford, Kent, and Bobby Kennett, 48, of St Anns Park Road, Wandsworth, south London, admitted violent disorder at an earlier hearing. All six men will be sentenced on 5 December. The jury failed to reach a verdict on a violent disorder charge against a seventh man, Mark Kirby, 37, of Ham Road, Worthing in West Sussex. The Crown Prosecution Service said it would not seek a retrial of Mr Kirby, who said he has been trying to prevent trouble. Earlier this year a number of other Crystal Palace supporters, who admitted the same charge of violent disorder, were jailed for up to 40 months each. | |
