| Peterborough United - Stockport County - 13/04/2008Source : Peterborough Today Posh fans hit out at 'over zealous'policingPOSH fans have accused the police of being "over zealous" after officers held them at a social club before Saturday's promotion clash with Stockport County. Supporters were kept at Ebeneezer’s, in Grove Street, off Oundle Road, by a cordon of 20 officers in front of the building, stopping them walking down to the London Road stadium until close to kick-off. They claimed the delaying tactics, which included the use of police dogs, were unnecessary at a venue not known for trouble. Karl Letman (36) is a member of Peterborough Independent Supporters Association (PISA), which meets at Ebeneezer’s before home games. He said: “We just wanted to watch the game, but the police showed no common sense. “There were families and little kids, but everyone was kept in. It was over the top.” Posh fans said they were told they had to be detained while some Stockport fans, who had gathered in The Office pub, were allowed to get to the ground. One Posh fan, who asked not to be named, said: “I have been supporting Peterborough for 33 years and this is the first time I can remember our fans being held back in a pub in that way.” Owner of Ebeneezer’s John Beddow said: “There were 15 to 20 policemen outside, just standing there, stopping them from going. People thought it was ridiculous.” However, a spokeswoman for the Office said she couldn’t fault the Stockport fans or police, on what was a stressful day. She said: “The Stockport fans were fantastic. “There was not one problem with them and they were a pleasure to have. “There was only one Posh fan who tried to stir up trouble. “The police were great checking on us and we felt safe. I didn’t see any trouble.” Peterborough police said it was a regularly used tactic to keep different groups of supporters apart. On this occasion, away fans – which were a relatively small group – were allowed in the ground first for safety reasons and to prevent any disorder. Inspector Andrew Pickles said: “We regret any inconvenience caused to genuine fans, but we had information that some troublemakers were at particular drinking premises near the ground, and it is vital that we ensure the safety of all. “The match was staffed proportionately, using the information we had and, as a consequence, the match was generally incident free.” One man, however, was arrested and charged with possession of a bladed article. Gareth Sanderson (31), of Jubilee Street, Peterborough, will appear at the city’s magistrates’ court on April 25. Police escorting fans to the London Road ground on Saturday, sent in by a local Posh fan. | |

| Fan became part of violent mob - 14/04/2008Source : shropshirestar.com An “intelligent and mature” Ludlow man became part of a violent mob when faced with opposing football supporters, a court heard. Warren Pound, 37, of Greenacres, was one of four Wolves fans handed a three-year ban from all matches for their part in crowd trouble during the visit of Stoke City to Molineux in February. District Judge Martin Brown said he found the number of football-related offences that involved mature men who act out of character “utterly amazing”. The group appearing at Wolverhampton Crown Court on Friday involved three working men with families, including Pound, and a 21-year-old university student. All four were arrested in the aftermath of the Midlands derby on February 9. | |

Warning to hard core hooligans
Police today issued a warning to “hard core” football hooligans ahead of tomorrow’s derby clash at the Molineux. Chief Superintendent Richard Green said extra officers would be on duty.
Chief Supt Green, commander for Bilston Street police station, said more police were needed to minimise the risk of Wolves and Albion fans causing trouble in the city before and after the 7.45pm kick-off.
Most pubs in the city centre will also be closed before and after the derby.
He said: “We will be very proactive in tackling any potential disorder and appreciate the risk that could be posed by hard core hooligan elements.
“Post-match we will be exercising crowd control measures.
“As a result of this some routes may be closed to both traffic and pedestrians, and we urge supporters to take this into account when making arrangements for their journey home.”

Crackdown on big match thugs
HUNDREDS of extra police are being drafted in to keep the lid on the potentially explosive Black Country derby at Molineux tomorrow night.
Many pubs in the area have decided to close their doors hours before the crucial Championship match between Wolves and West Bromwich Albion, with both clubs desperate for victory.
Roads and key routes leading to and from the stadium will also be closed off to traffic and pedestrians as police try to keep rival sets of fans apart.
And police warned today they were fully aware of the risks posed by hardcore hooligan elements out to cause problems and were ready for any eventuality.
Ch Supt Richard Green, commander for Bilston Street police station in Wolverhampton, said: "We will be implementing a policing plan to minimise the risk of supporters causing trouble in the city before and after the game.
"There are a number of policing resources dedicated to both the match itself and the rest of the night.
"We will be very proactive in tackling any potential disorder and appreciate the risk that could be posed by hardcore hooligan elements," he added.
Chief Supt Green pointed out that there were few incidents of disorder at the reverse fixture in November, and when Albion visited Molineux in the play-offs last season that match also passed without serious incident.
"Once again we have received excellent support from the football clubs and local businesses, and many licensed premises have voluntarily decided to close their doors for the evening."
Mr Green said that after the match police would be exercising strict crowd control measures to ensure the two sets of fans were able to leave the stadium in a "safe and controlled" manner.
"As a result of this, some routes may be closed to both traffic and pedestrians and we urge supporters to take this into account when making arrangements for their journey home." | |

| Police Investigation Under Way Into Sad Groningen Scenes - 15/04/2008Source : Goal.com The Groningen vs. Ajax match has now been rescheduled for Wednesday, but the incidents which led to the game been postponed in the first place could not go unnoticed by the police. Referee Erik Braamhaar decided to call off the clash on Sunday after a small number of hardcore fans allegedly set fire to toilet rolls before kick-off, sparking chaotic scenes at the “Euroborg”. To avoid the flames and smoke, hundreds of fans stormed onto the pitch, as one of the ground’s stands was being evacuated for the fire brigade to act. As a result, four people spent the night in hospital, while a total of 28 were treated, most of them for smoke inhalation. Groningen coach Ron Jans stated that several players had to contend with respiratory problems as well. They knew it in advance But now a Groningen director reveals that both the club’s board and the fire department were aware of the hooligans’ plans, also insisting a lack of fire hose pressure allowed the fire to spread out rapidly. “If the hoses had worked properly, the flames would not have got out of hand so quickly,” club general director Hans Nijland told Dutch public broadcaster NOS. “There are always flammable materials in football grounds.” Tragedy avoided The police have already begun an investigation into the incidents. According to Dutchnews.nl website, besides problems with fire hoses and statements that the fire trucks were not called up on time, there are also reports, namely in Algemeen Dagblad, that the emergency exits in the stand where the fire started were shut. Groningen-based newspaper Dagblad van het Noorden reports that a suspect has been caught on mobile telephone camera footage available on YouTube sprinkling some kind of liquid over terraces’ seats just before the flames exploded. Preliminary hearing The KNVB has also established a preliminary investigation of its own, which will only determine whether Groningen, Ajax or the referee are in any way responsible of any wrong-doing. Both clubs, Braamhaar and the match delegate will all be called to testify. The game has been rescheduled for Wednesday evening, with kick-off set for 19:30, both local time and CET. “Fans of both clubs are welcome,” reads a statement issued by the football association. “This, in contrast to what some media suggest, does not necessarily mean Sunday’s disturbances will go unpunished.” | |
