| Leeds United Millwall violence: pictures released - 08/04/2008
Source : Yorkshire Evening Post
TODAY police ask YOU the public to identify these men wanted into connection with violence which marred a match between Leeds United and arch rivals Millwall.
The five faces include one man alleged to have attacked a television crew as it filmed a baying mob which had gathered outside Elland Road after the game last year which Leeds won 4-2.
Trouble flared before kick off with rivals fans trying to get at each other and carried on inside the ground with a number of Millwall supporters arrested.
The mob of Leeds fans, which police said was up to 300-strong, then waited outside the stadium in a bid to get at remaining away fans being kept inside for their own safety.
Detective Inspector Phill Wright is in charge of Operation Dartboard set up to trace and prosecute hooligans involved in the trouble on that day - Saturday, October 27.
He told the YEP: "Quite a sizeable element decided they didn't want to go and then started to throw missiles at the police including coins, stones and traffic cones.
"The disorder sparked after the police tried to clear them away to create a sterile area so the Millwall fans could safely come out. "It spilled over from Wesley Street along Elland Road and across the motorway fly-over towards the Waggon & Horses pub."
Much of the trouble was captured on CCTV as well as by police video teams and an independent TV camera crew which also came under attack. Det Insp Wright, who is from City & Holbeck CID, added: "There were people who were just there (in the mob), people who followed the pack and people who led the pack.
"These five are the last people we are seeking to identify in connection with the disturbances on that day, mostly after the match. "One of the five is believed to have attacked a camera crew but we are not divulging which one.
"We've already identified in excess of 40 suspects using posters which have appeared both in London and West Yorkshire.
"Some have already been convicted, some are coming through the courts and some have yet to be charged.
"We would just ask the public to identify who these men are. They don't have to give us their own name, just those that match the pictures."

| Football arrests: Police reveal more details of fans - 06/04/2008Source : northamptonchron.co.uk Police have revealed further details of the 11 men arrested following clashes between rival football fans in Northamptonshire. Northamptonshire Police also said further arrests were likely following the disorder prior to and during Kettering Town's 3-0 win over Telford United on Saturday. A police spokesman confirmed details of the men detained after clashes in Kettering town centre. Three of the men - aged 41, 37 and 21 - were from Kettering. Also arrested was a 45-year-old man from Birmingham and two men - aged 22 and 17 - from Shifnal, Shropshire. The remaining five men are all from Telford, Shropshire, and are aged 22, 20, 19, 17 and 16. They have all been bailed pending further inquiries and will report back to Kettering police in June. Violence flared in Britannia Road prior to the Blue Square North fixture at about 2.15pm and disorder also broke out at the Shire Horse pub in Newland Street at 4.15pm. Detective Inspector Andy Nichols said CCTV footage of the first incident was being studied by officers. "We are carrying out a significant investigation and are confident that we can bring these offenders to justice," the officer said. "I am appealing for witnesses to the incidents to come forward - this was unacceptable behaviour on the part of a minority of so-called football fans." ************************************************************* Football violence: More arrests expected - 08/04/2008Source : northamptonchron.co.uk More arrests are expected after 11 people were questioned following clashes between football fans in Northamptonshire at the weekend. Police confirmed that three men, aged 41, 37 and 21, from Kettering were arrested after incidents surrounding Kettering Town's promotion-clinching game with Telford on Saturday. Also held were a 45-year-old man from Birmingham and two men, aged 22 and 17, from Shropshire. The remaining five men are all from Telford, aged 22, 20, 19, 17 and 16. They have been bailed pending further inquiries and will report back to Kettering police in June. "Most of the people who were involved in the incident were not followers of Kettering or Telford – I doubt they were football fans at all. Det Insp Andy Nichols, said: "This was unacceptable behaviour on the part of a minority of so-called football fans and I anticipate further arrests will be made." A spokesman for AFC Telford United said: "We are obviously aware of incidents that occurred on Saturday in Kettering town centre. "More than 500 supporters, including over 150 on official club transport, travelled to, and watched, the match, behaving impeccably." James Wykes, 54, landlord of the Beeswing pub, Kettering said: "The police escorted a gang of about 50 Telford fans away from the pub. "The officer came in and asked would I be prepared to serve them and I refused and they marched them back into the town centre." The Poppies were crowned champions of the Blue Square North division on Saturday. Club managing director Kevin Meikle said: "We're going to have some fantastic games next season. Hopefully we'll see some bigger attendances." | |

| Austrian hotels set up hotline for football fans - 04/04/2008
Source: Malaysia Sun
Austrian hotels have set up a hotline to aid football fans looking for accommodation during June's Euro 2008 football tournament, the country's hotel association OHV has said. Thousands of beds were still available in the vicinity of Austria's four host cities, officials said, alleviating fears of football fans that locations close to the tournament sites were already booked out.
'There is no reason to panic. We still have rooms suitable for all budgets,' OHV general secretary Thomas Reisenzahn said. Fans can get help 24x7 finding rooms 'for every taste and budget' via the hotline (+43 512 5351 992) or the internet (www.first-austrian-hotels.com), the organisation promised. Rooms were still available in acceptable distance to the Euro stadiums in Vienna, Salzburg, Klagenfurt and Innsbruck.

| After fan violence nearly ends match, FC Nuremberg fears repercussions - 06/04/2008
Source: THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
BERLIN -- FC Nuremberg faces a large fine and possible points deduction after its Bundesliga game Saturday against Eintracht Frankfurt almost ended in the first half due to fan violence. A regional game was also marred by violence the same day, and police reported Sunday that more than 30 people were arrested at the two matches, which left eleven officers injured and numerous bystanders to hospital. Visiting Nuremberg fans inside Frankfurt's Commerzbank Arena repeatedly tossed fireworks onto the field. Nuremberg beat Eintracht 3-1 in a contest stopped for 20 minutes and the match was close to joining just a handful in Bundesliga history to be cancelled by violence. "If just one more rocket was thrown, I would have called off the game immediately," referee Peter Gagelmann said. Fans were taken to the hospital after being hit by the firecrackers or complaining of ear drum damage. Police arrested 22 people. On Monday, the German Soccer Federation will review the violence, which began before the match. Seven officers were hurt when Nuremberg fans flung fireworks from trains in the downtown station. Clubs in the past have drawn hefty fines for similar incidents. If Nuremberg was docked points in the standings, that would be a real blow for a team one point from bottom. "Naturally the thought goes through our heads," Nuremberg manager Martin Bader said. "We make an intensive effort to work with our fans, but there comes the time when you are helpless." At Monday's review, Frankfurt will have to answer questions about why so many fireworks and dangerous weapons went undetected by controls at Commerzbank Arena. Security guards found more than 100 weapons ranging from knives to tear gas on fans inside the stadium. Two men were arrested with what police described as "illegal objects." "We have to review our security measures, so that we don't develop an environment like Italy has," said Heribert Bruchhagen, Frankfurt's board chairman. In the regional match, four officers were injured and 12 people arrested after a 1-1 draw between FC Saarbruecken and visiting FC Homburg. Police tried to stop 400 fans from vandalizing a construction site.

| RIOT POLICE ON STANDBY IN MANCHESTER - 09/04/2008
Source : Sportinglife.com
Violent clashes must not be allowed to mar tonight's Champions League clash between Manchester United and Roma, fans have been warned.
Riot police and mounted officers will be on standby to prevent a reoccurrence of the running battles between rival hooligans when the clubs met at Old Trafford in last year's competition.
Fans brawled and fought a pitched battle with police making 21 arrests.
The violence came after fans of the Red Devils were indiscriminately baton-charged by police in the first leg in Rome and three away fans were stabbed.
A massive security operation in Rome last week ensured the first leg of the quarter-final in this year's competition passed off peacefully.
But the Italian side has a notorious following of hooligans, the Ultras, and around 3,800 away fans are expected to travel from the continent.
Match commander Superintendent John Graves, of Greater Manchester Police (GMP), said: "Last week's first leg in Rome passed off largely peacefully and we would like to thank the supporters of both teams for making it a memorable occasion for the right reasons.
"Here, the winner will have the chance to compete in this year's Champions League semi-final.
"We expect a capacity crowd and a large number of people will travel to Manchester to watch the match.
"The police presence in the city centre and around the stadium will be increased to provide public reassurance and minimise disorder and fans are advised to arrive early.
"GMP is used to policing high-profile matches and this is no exception. The operation for this game will ensure the match is held with minimal disruption and that, most importantly, people can have a safe, enjoyable time here.
"We have liaised closely with both clubs in the run-up to this game. Both clubs are extremely responsible organisations, and I am confident that they know that we all carry a responsibility to ensure the game passes off peacefully.
"Europe's eyes will be on Old Trafford once again and our objective is to ensure that the event is memorable for all the right reasons."
United lead 2-0 after the first leg.

| Millwall boss calls for calm - Hooligans will destroy our club, says Till as Lions face an FA rap - 09/04/2008
Source : Bexley Times
MILLWALL vice-chairman Stewart Till has admitted he is worried loutish fans are threatening the future of the club.
The League One outfit could face possible sanctions from the Football Association (FA) following crowd trouble during last Saturday's relegation clash against Gillingham at the Den.
The FA has written to the club after referee Steve Bratt included in his report an incident when plastic bottles were thrown onto the pitch, which led to the arrest of one supporter.
The Millwall board have already had at least one meeting with the FA this season following disorder during their match against Oldham in March.
This followed an ugly scene during a game against Southend on February 12, when referee Stuart Attwell was struck by a coin thrown from the terraces.
"Every time something like this happens, the club has to hold its breath," Till told the Times. "We are now in a vulnerable position. Every pound we spend hurts us - we are not making money down here. People who engage in this sort of thing could prevent us from buying a player that we might have wanted to bring in next season."
Millwall could now face a hefty fine - or even a points deduction - and the despondent board member called on the FA to exercise common sense in responding to the incident, which was sparked by Gillingham goalscorer Nicky Southall celebrating jubilantly in front of the home fans.
"The hope is that the FA will see it didn't do any damage and realise that it was just one or two idiots. I hope they will put it in perspective," he added.
"I hope we don't get a fine because we have spent a lot of money on stewarding and now we have to live in fear of reprisals for these actions. After the Oldham game, we had a constructive discussion with the FA and they were impressed with the efforts the club was making."
However, the problems do not end there and Millwall's next home game is against Leeds United on Saturday, April 19. This week, West Yorkshire Police released photographs of fans wanted for questioning following clashes in the reverse fixture in October and, with a history of rivalry between the supporters, Till has warned that troublemakers will not be welcome.
"We want people to come and love the club, but it is incompatible to say you love the club and do something that can damage us. It beggars belief that they can call themselves supporters," he added.
"If you intend to cause trouble don't come, and don't act foolishly if you lose your head during the match.
