| Prison for three Espanyol fans after 2004 derby violence - 08/04/2008Source : Reuters + EUROPA PRESS Three Espanyol fans have been given three-year prison sentences by a court in Barcelona for serious public disorder offences at the Primera Liga club's Montjuic stadium nearly four years ago. It is one of the toughest punishments handed out in Spain for violence at a soccer match. The three were part of a group of fans responsible for crowd surges, confrontations with the police, throwing objects on to the pitch and causing damage to the stadium fittings during the city derby against Barcelona on Oct. 16, 2004. After the game, they were involved in further violent incidents outside the stadium, where they were detained by the police. They were ordered to compensate Espanyol with 10,782 euros for the damage caused to their property and were barred from entering any soccer stadium for five years. There have been a number of violent incidents at Spanish matches in recent years with players, fans, coaches and match officials injured inside and outside stadiums. Last month, Athletic Bilbao goalkeeper Armando had to have six stitches for a cut on his face after being hit by a bottle thrown from the stands by a Real Betis fan. A couple of weeks later, mobile-phone images of an Atletico Madrid fan being kicked and beaten with a stick by Sevilla supporters outside the Sanchez Pizjuan stadium, were aired on television. | |

| Sheffield United - Sheffield Wednesday FC - 08/04/2008Source : The Star Fans hit out at police after derby clashPOLICE today defended the way their actions at the Bramall Lane derby clash after widespread criticism of the way they reacted to trouble in the ground. Hundreds of fans have posted messages on website forums questioning why it took officers so long to intervene when fights broke out in the Kop and Valad Stand. Trouble flared after isolated pockets of Wednesday fans sitting in home areas celebrated a goal during Tuesday's 2-2 draw. But District Commander Jon House defended his officers and promised those responsible for the trouble would be dealt with. Former Owls player John Pearson who was part of the Radio Sheffield team covering the game, questioned live on air why officers in riot gear stood at the Bramall Lane end of the ground as trouble erupted at the other. He said: "Why are they not sorting this out instead of leaving it to stewards who are outnumbered?" Former Owls Football in the Community coach Steve Adams, who was sitting in the Hellewell Stand, also questioned police tactics. He said: "It was scary. I couldn't believe what was going on. "The stand I was in was occupied with United supporters sitting directly above where the Wednesdayites were. "When the goal went in the United supporters started to spit at the Wednesday fans sat beneath them. Then they started to throw bottles and coins. "I could see women and kids in the Wednesday stand being pelted and all the while the police just stood and watched." Another Owls fan, who asked not to be named, said: "I got struck on several occasions by dangerous objects, one of which was a glass bottle of whisky, that just clipped the side of my head as it came down from the top tier above us." Ch Supt House said the fighting in the Kop end and Valad stand had been caused by the "stupidity" of Wednesday fans buying tickets for the home ends. He said: "They should not have been there and were at risk, and so too were other members of the public. "Deploying into large crowds quickly is not something we like to do as it puts officers at risk and members of the public if situations develop - and on this occasion officers were injured. Ch Supt House said a small number of fans were throwing missiles but added: "It would have been heavy handed for us to go in and cause great risk to fans in the stadium. "We have got videos from CCTV cameras in the ground which we are currently studying and those responsible will be prosecuted." | |

The violence erupted after the game at Molineux on 9 February. One man, 31, and a boy, 16, have had three-year football banning orders imposed after being convicted of public order offences. | PSG banner investigation begins - 10/04/2008Source : TeamTalk.com The French league's disciplinary commission are to hear evidence from the key parties involved in the Paris Saint-Germain banner incident.PSG's 2-1 win over Lens in the Coupe de la Ligue final last month was overshadowed by a banner unfurled by the capital club's supporters for around five minutes in the second half of the match. It read: "Paedophiles, unemployed, inbreeding, welcome to the North". The message hijacked the name of a film which is currently breaking box-office records in France, called 'Welcome to the North', and was aimed directly at the people of Lens. There has been widespread condemnation of the banner, with even French president Nicolas Sarkozy calling for firm sanctions against the guilty parties. The French league, the French Football Federation and both clubs have made complaints and three PSG supporters have already been called in for questioning for "provocation of hatred and violence". PSG officials will be summoned on Thursday and asked whether the club could have done more to prevent the banner being unveiled. A decision on what punishment should be handed to PSG is not expected for another two or three weeks. The club, who are currently in Ligue 1's relegation zone, could be fined heavily, forced to play a match behind closed doors or even docked points.

| Wolverhampton Wanderers FC v West Bromwich Albion: City pubs to close ahead of derby - 10/04/2008
Source : expressandstar.com
Pubs in Wolverhampton city centre have been asked to close on Tuesday when Wolves and Baggies clash at Molineux, as police prepare to flood the streets with hundreds of officers.
Landlords and licensees have agreed to shut to avoid alcohol-fuelled brawls between rival fans, who have a history of violent stand-offs at derby games.
Katie Weston, duty manager at the Hogshead in Stafford Street, said: “We will be closing at 5pm that night and will not be opening for the rest of the night.
“It is something we were expecting as it has happened a few times in the past where the police have asked pubs to close.
“Fortunately with it being a Tuesday match, it is not our busiest time and it is much better than being asked to close on a Saturday.”
Lindsey Wilcox, duty manager at the Goose in the City in Lichfield Street, said: “The police have asked us to close and we have no problem doing that.
“We will shut at 4pm on Tuesday in plenty of time for the match.”
A member of staff at Varsity, opposite the Hogshead, confirmed it would also be closed at the same time.
The move has been imposed in the city whenever the two teams clash at Molineux ever since ugly scenes erupted in January last year.
Police have advised fans driving to the game not to park in the city centre unless necessary.
Wolves spokesman Matt Grayson said: “We will not sell alcohol in the ground which is a standard prudent measure for matches between Wolves and West Brom.
“We are fast approaching a sell-out crowd and we would therefore urge people to arrive as early as possible.”
Kick-off is at 7.45pm and gates open at 6.30pm. Details of any possible road closures have yet to be announced.

| Millwall v Leeds United hooliganism warning from Met - 10/04/2008Source : Yorkshire Evening Post The Metropoliitan Police have announced plans to try and avoid a repeat of clashes which marred Millwall's visit to Leeds United's Elland Road earlier this season. In a statement, the Metropolitan Police Service said it was working closely with Millwall Football Club and British Transport Police to ensure the April 19 fixture at Millwall's New Den is safe and trouble-free for visiting fans. Football yobs repeatedly clashed with police in ugly scenes before and after Leeds United's home game with Millwall in October. Trouble flared as three busloads of away fans pulled up near the Billy Bremner statue outside Elland Road. Millwall hooligans on board the double deckers smashed windows and kicked open doors in a bid to goad hundreds of watching Leeds fans into a confrontation. Windows and doors on the buses were put through by yobs on board as they tried to goad watching Leeds fans into confrontation. Mounted police responded by charging at some of the United followers, forcing them away from the buses. In a statement, the MPS said: "MPS officers from across London, supported by colleagues from BTP, will be at the Millwall ground and throughout London for the event, providing a robust high-visibility presence to reassure fans and the local community, and employing a range of tactics to identify and target troublemakers. "Whilst there is no specific intelligence to suggest that acts of organised disorder are planned, we remain committed to ensuring The Den remains a safe place for all to watch football. "We encourage both Millwall and Leeds Utd fans to work with us to create a pleasant and safe atmosphere to allow everyone to enjoy the day. "We remind Leeds Utd supporters that they will not be able to purchase tickets on the day of the match; we therefore advise anyone without tickets not to travel to the game." Superintendent Harrington of the Metropolitan Police Service added: "Our overall aim is to facilitate law-abiding fans' travel to and from the match and create a safe environment for them to enjoy the game itself. We've been working closely with the clubs and other agencies involved to make sure this happens. "We want to send a clear message to fans that we will police match day fairly but firmly to ensure the game passes without incident and allow true football fans to enjoy the day. "Our message to people planning to attend is simple; if you're coming to enjoy the game safely and legally, we're here to help you do that; if you plan to cause trouble you will find your efforts thwarted." Millwall fans arrive at Elland Road. | |

| Football stadium ban for racist woman, 44 - 12/04/2008
Source : Northern Echo
A MIDDLE-AGED woman has been banned from watching a North-East football team for directing racist taunts at black players.
The 44-year-old, who has not been named, was arrested by police following her behaviour at Middlesbrough's Riverside Stadium during the Premier League clash with Wigan on January 29.
Wigan have a number of black players, including England international Emile Heskey, while Middlesbrough have George Boateng in their ranks.
advertisementPlain-clothed officers from Cleveland Police's football intelligence unit acted following complaints made about the woman's verbal abuse.
The woman, who attended Middlesbrough police station and received a caution for the offence, has now been banned from attending home matches.
Yesterday, the club warned that an equally tough line will be taken against other offenders.
A club spokesman said: "We are proud of our record on combating racism at the Riverside and, fortunately, it has never been a major problem.
"Nevertheless, we are certainly not complacent and will crack down hard on any incidents of racist abuse.'' The spokesman said the club worked closely with the Kick it Out and Show Racism the Red Card organisations in combating racism, and was determined to uphold its reputation as a familyfriendly stadium where people of all races and religions are given equal respect.
Detective Constable John Stokeld, of the football intelligence unit, said: "Going to a football match is very much a family event, and the last thing you want your children to hear is racist insults being shouted at the players.
"Cleveland Police is committed to the Show Racism the Red Card campaign and we are determined to stamp out racism on the terraces to ensure that the game can be enjoyed by everyone.'' Det Con Stokeld added: "Any fans who hear racist or prejudicial shouts at football matches can contact the football intelligence unit on 01642-326326, and we will investigate."
Middlesbrough chairman Steve Gibson received an award from Show Racism the Red Card in 2003.

Source : Glasgow Sunday Mail
THE German FA gave Nuremberg a rocket last week after their supporters halted the weekend game at Frankfurt.
Ref Peter Gagelmann led players off for 20 minutes after the travelling fans threw fireworks on the pitch.
Nuremberg went on to win 3-1 after action resumed but were later fined around £40,000 by the German FA.
Frankfurt were also hit with a £20,000 penalty for poor security. Over 100 weapons ranging from knives to tear gas were found on fans.
Two men were also arrested with what police described as "illegal objects". The mind boggles.

| Three-year bans for Wolves hooligans - 12/04/2008
Source : expressandstar.com
They were described in court as intelligent mature men - but faced with opposing football supporters, they became part of a violent mob.
Today four Wolves fans were starting a three-year ban from all matches for their part in crowd trouble during the visit of Stoke City to Molineux in February.
District judge Martin Brown said he found “utterly amazing” the number of football-related offences that involved mature men who act out of character.
Appearing at Wolverhampton Magistrates Court were three working men with families and a 21-year-old university student. All four were arrested in the aftermath of the Midlands derby on February 9.
Aaron Miller, aged 24, of The Heath, Heath Hayes, pleaded guilty to using threatening words and behaviour with the intent of putting others in fear of violence.
Keith Wilding, aged 53, of Pinfold Crescent, Merry Hill, Wolverhampton, Warren Pound, 37, of Greenacres, Ludlow, and Lee Craddock, 21, of Church Hill, Hednesford, admitted using threatening words and behaviour, causing alarm and distress.
Emma Wynne-Owen, prosecuting, said violence erupted after the game when missiles, including rocks, were thrown.
She said: “It was a large-scale disorder, with some fans becoming engaged in physical contact.”
She said bricklayer Pound, a season ticket holder, and Wilding, who had not been at the match, were seen in Railway Drive, off the Ring Road, hurling threats at police officers, particularly targeting women officers.
Craddock, a forensic science student at the Central Lancashire University in Preston, and new father Miller were each among groups of fans who were hurling missiles but claim they did not throw anything themselves. Both had drank a large amount of alcohol, in Craddock’s case, eight or nine pints.
None of the men knew each other and none had any previous convictions.
Sentencing them, Mr Brown said: “As a football lover, I’m utterly amazed and completely fail to understand why people like you should want to behave in the way you did.”
Miller and Pound were also fined £300, Wilding £200 and Craddock £100. All had to pay a £15 surcharge and £43 costs each.

| Colombia: Union Magdalena - Junior Barranquilla - 09/04/2008Source: http://rtv.rtrlondon.co.uk Colombian football fans riot, match cancelledAt least 40 injured in Colombian soccer violenceA stolen flag belonging to fans of the opposing team sparked a riot between football fans of two Colombian teams playing in the city of Santa Marta, some 905 kilometres (562 miles) north of the Colombian capital of Bogota on Wednesday (April 09). The Copa Colombia - Postobon match between Union Magdalena - who was playing at home - and Junior de Barranquilla turned nasty when Barranquilla supporters invaded the pitch after stealing flags from fans from the home team. The match was called-off and was postponed until April 16. Magdalena Police Department Chief, Roque Angel Lara, explained what happened. "It started when a flag was stolen, in the Union Magdalena stands. That created a mass reaction between one group of supporters and the other. It was controlled at the onset. I was located in the northern and southern stands looking for a way to calm the situation so that the match could take place, but that was not possible and the match had to be cancelled." Football fans hurled missiles such as stones and sticks at police and other fans. It took police officers several minutes to control the clash in the Eduardo Santos stadium. Some 40 people were injured, some seriously and others were taken away suffering from concussions. Dozens more were arrested. Union Magdalena Soccer Team President, Eduardo Davila, said that he was worried about the future of the game as he saw many youngsters on drugs creating disturbances. "We had never experienced this. It's very worrying and I don't know what could be done about it. I saw a lot of people on drugs, under age youngsters, a lot of drugged youngsters. I was there on the pitch talking to them, looking at them and it is regrettable and what is in store from now on, it's very worrying." The riot caused millions of pesos in material damages. At 15:30 local time, an hour after the official start of the match, it was announced that the game will definitely not be played today. A radio commentator for national broadcaster NOS says about 150 fans scrambled over glass barriers onto the field and the stand has been fully evacuated.
