RKC Waalwijk - Fortuna Sittard - 18/04/2008

Source : Mail

Genk view

Yesterday 18th april. Last round in the Dutch second division(Jupiler league). Fortuna Sittard had to play at Waalwijk against RKC. Waalwijk still in the running for the title, so it seemed interesting enough to make the trip.
We went there with approximately 25 lads, 4 Genk, 3 Geel and the rest CFS. First no pub would let us in, out of fear that we would start trouble inside. At last we found a pub, where we sat & drank untill 7pm. Sittard OB already at the scene. We still managed to get in contact with some boys from Waalwijk and made some plans. Some Sittard Youth joined us (+/-15) and we started walking towards their pub, 40-handed approx.
We came near their pub & saw a group of 70/80 of Waalwijk & other teams(NAC, Den Bosch? & some local Feyenoord). OB tried to separate us & escort us towards the stadium, but we broke through, heavily outnumbered & with a young group. Waalwijk was well game and some heavy fighting occurred. With some wounded on both sides. Even OB had to endure some. At last police on horses came & we were being escorted to the stadium.
Very nice fight of 40 against 80!, but no-one gave an inch. No weapons on both side, only a few bottles & stones being thrown from the back of the Waalwijk group.
After the game we were all put in busses, for our own safety said OB, we weren't allowed to walk towards our cars. So we had to drive around in the city untill all was calm.
Waalwijk attacked OB after the game.

China not fear of football hooligans at Olympic Games - 16/04/2008

Source: Xinhua.com

BEIJING - China is not fear of any football hooligan during the football tournaments of the 2008 Beijing Olympics, said Lin Weiguo, who is in charge of the football events in the Beijing Organizing Committee for the Olympic Games (BOCOG) here on Wednesday.

The BOCOG along with the five host cities of the football events, Beijing, Tianjin, Shanghai, Shenyang, and Qinhuangdao have formulate emergency plans and security measures to ensure the events to be smoothly carried out.

"We will keep off the overseas football hooligans," Lin said in a confident voice.

"We have a lot of experiences since we have successfully held the FIFA Women's World Cup and other international football events," Lin added.

Around 70 percent of the tickets for the Men's football final match have been booked, which will take place at the Bird Nest National Stadium, according to a BOCOG release.

Six competition stadia will be provided for the Olympic football tournaments, among which four stadiums have been completed, Lin said, adding that everything is on good progress as scheduled.

Regarding the transportation among the five venue cities, the authorities concerned will provide flights, trains and buses for contestants and fans. While a limousine, a car, an escort car and a luggage van will be arranged for each team in each city. Up to now, FIFA has booked 17 cars and a van in rate-card service.

The official draw for the tournaments will be held on April 20.

Newcastle vs Sunderland: Red card for derby hooligans - 16/04/2008

Source: http://www.chroniclelive.co.uk

HOOLIGAN-spotters will be used to target troublemakers at this weekend’s Tyne-Wear derby.

Northumbria Police is putting extra officers on patrol for the grudge fixture at St James’s Park on Sunday.

The force’s football intelligence unit says it is not expecting any problems but has vowed to crack down hard on any rowdy supporters.

Chief Supt Neil Mackay, head of Northumbria’s operations department, said: “Newcastle and Sunderland fans love football with a passion and the overwhelming majority are there to enjoy the game and not cause trouble.

“In the run-up to the derby we have been working closely with pubs, off-licences and the two clubs, to ensure all fans can enjoy the game in a safe, trouble-free environment.

“However, while we’re not expecting problems, we’re putting extra police officers on patrol and taking steps to identify troublemakers and ensure they do not enter the ground or cause disruption in the city centre.

“For the very small minority who are intent on causing trouble, I have a warning. They will be arrested and could not only find themselves with a criminal record but also banned for life from future matches.

“My advice to them is to stay away.”

Sunderland travel to Newcastle for the televised 1.30pm kick-off, with only three points separating the two clubs in the Premier League.
The man being sought after the November trouble

It is the return fixture to the 1-1 draw at the Stadium of Light on November 10 and officers have revealed they are still hunting one man suspected of causing disturbances that day.

The man is described as being of stocky build, between 30 and 35 and bald.

He was wearing a dark bomber-type jacket. His image has been published on the force website.

DC Iain Saville said: “We released several images of men we wished to trace in connection with offences at the last derby match.

“I am grateful to the public’s response to our appeal, which resulted in three men being identified and arrested.

“I would ask the public to look at the remaining image on our website and if anyone should recognise him, to call us at Sunderland CID on 08456 043 043, ext 66445 or via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”

He added: “Just to reiterate the warning given out by Chief Supt Neil Mackay to all those intent on creating problems this weekend, we will be out in force on Sunday and will not tolerate any bad behaviour.”

Around 3,000 Sunderland fans are expected to travel to St James’s Park for this Sunday’s clash and they are being urged to use free coaches organised by Sunderland AFC.

Other coach operators must notify the police of their travel plans now by calling (01661) 868 148.

Any supporters’ coach that fails to attend a rendezvous or misses the convoy will be turned back by traffic patrols.

‘Violent’ football fan fails to get his all-match ban lifted - 19/04/2008

Source : South Wales Echo

A FOOTBALL fan banned from matches following serious violence in Cardiff city centre has failed in his bid to get the prohibition lifted.

Bristol City supporter Christopher Sugar, 40, had pleaded guilty to a charge of violent disorder after a frightening incident in the Prince of Wales in St Mary's Street following the LDV Vans Cup final played at the Millennium Stadium in April 2003.

In December that year, he was jailed for eight months by a judge at Cardiff Crown Court and ordered to stay away from all games until the end of 2009.

But he returned to the court yesterday, this time before the Recorder of Cardiff, Nicholas Cooke QC to ask for the banning order to be shortened. His application was opposed by police in Cardiff and Bristol.

Pc Mario Marriott, of Cardiff’s Football Intelligence Unit, said the violence in which Sugar had been involved had not been confined to the ground but had caused serious disruption in the city centre.

The Recorder refused Sugar’s application saying he also had a football-related incident in his past – more than a decade ago – when he appeared before magistrates in Bath for punching someone after comments were made about the standard of play in a game.

He told him: “This was a particularly serious incident of football violence and I consider there is still a risk from you.”

Pc Marriott welcomed the decision, saying: “My job is to make sure football hooligans involved in serious disorder serve their full bans”.

PSG fans protest at training ground after defeat - 20/04/2008

Source : guardian.co.uk (with Reuters)

Frustrated Paris St Germain supporters painted graffiti at the club's training ground during the night after a 3-0 defeat at Caen left PSG in danger of going down for the first time, witnesses said on Sunday.
"They painted graffiti saying: 'If we go down, we'll shoot you down' and 'PSG in Ligue 2 = Riots'," one of the witnesses told Reuters.
During Saturday's match, a PSG supporter invaded the pitch and started running towards goalkeeper Mickael Landreau before heading back. Media reported that after the match PSG fans tore the windscreen wipers off the team's bus.
PSG lie 18th in the Ligue 1 standings and are three points adrift of Racing Lens, the first club above the drop zone, with four games to play.
Three days ago, Interior Minister Michele Alliot-Marie banned a group of PSG supporters, the Boulogne Boys, for unfolding a racist banner during last month's League Cup final win over Lens.

Football fans see red after pub threats - 17/04/2008

Source: http://www.thisislocallondon.co.uk

A group of football fans were hounded out of a Hendon pub last week by riotous opposition fans.

The five Liverpool supporters were in The Little House, in Brent Street, during the Champions League game against Arsenal, when they were barracked by fellow viewers.

One of the group, Darren Newmark, 26, claims the landlady was increasingly confrontational as the game went on, siding with the Arsenal fans.

He said: "When Arsenal scored, they were up in our faces, very threatening and were chanting with their arms open.

"It made me very nervous and we were thinking if we said anything, they were going to retaliate.

"At one point they picked up two glasses and shook them as if they were about to smash them in our faces and pour drink on us."

Mr Newmark said they had been in the pub for the first leg and went back because they knew they were guaranteed seats.

When Liverpool were awarded a penalty, they were told aggressively it would not be advisable for them to stay if it went in.

"At that point we thought it best to leave," said Mr Newmark, who claims he and a friend were driving that night, and only had one drink, with the others in the group drinking cola.

He added, "The fact we weren't drinking very much seemed to be a real problem for them."

The landlady at The Little House declined to comment on the incident.

Tom Watson, a spokesman for Pubwatch, a voluntary organisation which aims to achieve safer social drinking environments, advised customers to contact the company that owns a pub if they have any complaints.

He said: "There is no excuse for it. The days when the owners could be a bit rough and ready are over, and they should be a lot more accommodating."

"The pub business is slow at the moment, so if people want to drink slowly, we would say that's better than them not drinking at all."

Linfield: Football fans appear in court over offences at match - 17/04/2008

Source: http://www.irishexaminer.com

THREE Linfield football fans appeared in court yesterday charged over trouble that flared at a cross-border cup match.
The game between the Belfast club and St Patrick’s Athletic in Dublin’s Inchicore was marred by ugly scenes before kick-off after scuffles broke out as stewards and gardaí searched supporters.

The trio, who appeared at Kilmainham District Court, were charged with a series of public order offences and freed on bail.

Robert Ervin, aged 38, from Glencairn Pass, Belfast, and 30-year-old William Rankin, from Alexander Park, Carrickfergus, Co Antrim, were charged with being drunk and using threatening, abusive or insulting behaviour.

Stephen Smith, aged 35, from Carnhill Walk, Carrickfergus, faced three public order charges including using threatening, abusive or insulting behaviour and failing to comply with Garda orders.

The three were remanded on bail to reappear at the Kilmainham Court on May 14.

The minor disturbances, which left one Linfield supporter nursing a bloodied nose, broke out as several hundred fans made their way into the ground and gardaí carried out searches.

The three men had been removed from the football ground before kick-off and kept overnight in Garda custody after the minor scuffles broke out.

A fourth man, who was refused entry to the match and later arrested, had charges against him dismissed under the Probation Act.

The men had travelled to Dublin for the match with several hundred other Linfield fans.

A heavy security presence had been in place on the streets around Richmond Park amid fears groups not attending the match would attempt to spark violence among the fans.

The Garda operation was intensified at full time with the riot squad, dog handlers and mounted officers maintaining a cordon outside the Inchicore club blocking fans from mingling and ensuring buses packed with Linfield supporters left within minutes of the final whistle.

St Pat’s fans had been ordered by gardaí to stay in the ground for 10 minutes after full-time to limit the risk of further trouble.

Ipswich: Violent Blues fan banned from games - 20/04/2008

Source: http://www.eveningstar.co.uk

A FOOTBALL hooligan has been spared jail but banned from attending matches for three years after lashing out at a rival fan.

Ipswich Town fan Trevor Green, of Blickling Close, Ipswich, was at South East Suffolk Magistrates' Court for sentencing after pleading guilty to affray.

The court heard how Green, a BT employee and father of two, punched a rival supporter after a match against Watford in February.

Violence broke out at the corner of Portman Road and Sir Alf Ramsey Way after the Blues' 2-1 defeat, when Green attacked Watford fan Geoffrey Bonsor.

The 28-year-old was one of five supporters arrested that day as fans were involved in trouble around the stadium.

Neil Saunders, mitigating, said Green had been drinking and had struck out because he thought he heard Mr Bonsor make a comment about his mother.

But Mr Saunders called Green a productive member of society whose actions were out of character.

Mr Saunders said: “His behaviour was fuelled by alcohol and often, when people drink, their thinking is impaired.

“He has brought shame on himself and his family and I think that is highlighted by his demeanour today.

“In view of his 14 years of passionate football support, a banning order might be the most appropriate punishment.”

Green avoided being given a jail sentence but was told he must not attend a football match in England or Wales for the next three years.

He must also complete 250 hours of unpaid work and pay Mr Bonsor £250 compensation.

Magistrates said that despite Green's obvious remorse and his co-operation with police, the attack was unprovoked and for that reason a three year order was the shortest they could impose.

Aston Villa - Birmingham City - 20/04/2008

Source: BBC

Man dies following football derby

A man, believed to be a football fan, has died after being hit by a car in the Aston area of Birmingham.

The collision happened after Sunday's Premier League match between Aston Villa and Birmingham City at Villa Park, which the home side won 5-1.

Police said the pedestrian suffered fatal injuries during the incident in Aston Hall Road at 1500 BST.

Officers were at the scene and the area was taped off. It is not yet clear if rival supporters were involved.

The vehicle involved was a Volkswagen Golf and police said they were appealing for witnesses.

A MAN was tonight (Sunday) being questioned on suspicion of murder after a pedestrian was killed in a collision with a car close to Villa Park shortly after the Villa-Blues derby.

The victim, a 26-year-old man, died in City Hospital a short time after the collision in Aston Hall Road this afternoon, as thousands of Blues and Villa fans poured out of the stadium.

The victim has not yet been identified by police, although unconfirmed reports say it is believed he was a football fan.

A West Midlands Police spokeswoman said: "A 20-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder.

"A 26-year-old male suffered fatal injuries after a road traffic collision between a Volkswagen Golf and a pedestrian."

Police confirmed the death happened after the Aston Villa v Birmingham City football match at around 3pm this afternoon. Ambulance crews gave emergency first aid to the man at the scene before he was taken to hospital where doctors lost the battle to save him.

No-one from the emergency services would comment on unconfirmed speculation on Blues' and Villa fans' websites this evening (Sunday) that fans from both teams were involved in the incident.

Police diverted onlookers and traffic away and tonight (Sunday) the immediate area remained sealed off.

Forensic teams were working at the scene and there appeared to be a large police presence in the area.

A MAN was being held on suspicion of murder last night after an Aston Villa fan was run over following their 5-1 defeat of Birmingham.

The 26-year-old man was “sent flying” by a car — said to be driven by a fan of their Premier League rivals — outside Villa’s ground.

Rival fans traded insults and obscene hand gestures moments before one was left dying in a gutter yesterday.

Birmingham City and Aston Villa supporters clashed outside the Villa Park ground.

As the mayhem erupted a 26-year-old Villa fan was run down by a car, believed to be driven by a Blues supporter.

As he walked along, in a replica kit, witnesses said there was an altercation with the driver of a car heading away from the ground.

A moment later the man was “sent flying” by the car.

Another fan at the Premier League grudge match said: “There were Villa fans singing how Blues were going down.

“Next thing all hell broke loose, an engine revved and a guy was sent flying.

“It all happened so quickly and it was impossible to see if the victim had been one of those winding up the Blues lot. But some Villa and Blues fans hate each other.”

Another witness said: “The guy didn’t stand a chance.

“It looked like he was mown down deliberately.”

Police arrested a 20-year-old driving a VW Golf and were last night questioning him on suspicion of murder.

An ambulance rushed the victim to Birmingham’s City Hospital but doctors could not save him.

The driver was arrested almost immediately but it was unclear last night whether he had halted at the scene or been traced later.

It is believed the incident was captured on CCTV.

The victim had not been named last night as police contacted his relatives.

The two football clubs in Birmingham are bitter rivals and Villa’s win was the biggest for almost 50 years.

City are now perilously close to relegation — languishing third from bottom of the Premier League.

A spokesman for West Midlands Police said: “A 20-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder.”

Yesterday, trouble also flared after the Tyne and Wear derby.

Newcastle fans clashed with cops in the city centre following their team’s 2-0 victory over arch-rivals Sunderland at St James’ Park.

Eleven people were arrested.

Derby day arrests as fans clash with police

POLICE in riot gear were called in to quell disturbances involving fans following yesterday's Tyne- Wear derby.

Newcastle United supporters clashed with police in Newcastle city centre following their team's 2-0 victory over arch-rivals Sunderland at St James' Park.

Dozens of police officers in riot gear entered Newcastle Central railway station - which was temporarily closed to the public - following clashes in the area.

Several Newcastle supporters, many with their faces covered, were taken away by Northumbria police.

Later, Northumbria police said a total of 11 people had been arrested for a variety of mainly drink-related offences. Four people were held inside St James' Park while another seven were arrested outside the ground.

Police used horses to drive back fans attempting to get to Sunderland supporters who were returning to their coaches outside St James Park. There were also clashes as some fans tried to get to trains carrying Sunderland supporters back home to Wearside. Witness Hugh Macknight, 34, from Newcastle, said: "There was an army of police with dogs, riot gear and horses and there were about 300 fans corralled on Pink Lane in the city centre.

"The fans were angry and were throwing bottles and glasses and chanting and the police were pulling people out of the crowd and making a few arrests."

A Northumbria Police spokeswoman said the derby had passed without serious disorder.

She said: "Some of those arrested were known and were taken into custody to prevent problems escalating.

"Also, there were a number of localised clashes among fans, but these were relatively isolated and brought quickly under control by the police, who took fair but effective action against those involved."

Chief Superintendent Neil Mackay, head of the forces operations unit, said: "The vast majority of fans behaved well.

"Four arrests out of a crowd of 52,000 is still phenomenally low and, although there has been an increase compared with last November's derby, it can still be said the match generated a great atmosphere."

DERBY-day disorder erupted after the Toon’s triumph over Sunderland.

Newcastle United supporters clashed with police in the city centre immediately after the Magpies’ 2-0 victory over their arch-rivals.

Trouble continued into the night as drunk fans fought with each other and caused criminal damage.

Northumbria Police today said they had arrested 14 people during and after the St James’s Park fixture.

One man was arrested for damaging a car in the Bigg Market.

All of the disorder is thought to have been caused by Newcastle supporters, with the Black Cats’ fans having been safely transported back to Wearside.

But Northumbria Police are playing down the problems.

A spokeswoman said: “The local derby passed without serious disorder, although a total of 14 people have been arrested for a variety of offences, mainly drink-related.

“Four were arrested inside the ground and two outside the ground. Some of those arrested were known to us and were taken into custody to prevent problems escalating.

“Also, there were a number of clashes which were relatively isolated and brought quickly under control by the police, who took firm, but effective, action against those involved.”

A number of those arrested have now been charged with alcohol-related offences.

Sunderland fans had coins thrown at them as they left the stadium, while police had to use horses to drive back Newcastle United supporters who had assembled to taunt their rivals.

Angry scenes flared around the Central Station area of the city where police dogs were used to keep the crowds under close control.

The Sunderland team were stuck inside the ground because of the crowds outside, as were a number of Toon players.

Among them was striker Obafemi Martins who became so frustrated with the delay he left his car in the stadium and walked through the city to his Quayside flat.

Chief Supt Neil Mackay, head of the force’s operations unit, said: “The vast majority of fans behaved well.

“Four arrests out of a crowd of 52,000 is phenomenally low and although there has been an increase compared with last November’s derby it can still be said the match generated a great atmosphere.”

A taxi driver, who did not want to be named, said: “I was driving round the city all night and it was one fight after another and I am sad to say I saw a lot of Newcastle fans fighting with each other.

“At one point, I had two Newcastle fans, wearing black and white shirts, sprawled on my bonnet, trying to punch the living daylights our of each other.”
