| Wales: "Soccer hooligans" pictures released - 24/04/2008
Source: http://www.southwalesargus.co.uk
POLICE are appealing for help in identifying possible football hooligans following the FAW Premier Cup clash between Newport County and Cardiff City.
South Wales Police have launched Operation Meirion following fighting at the Ninian Park game on Tuesday, February 19.
Pictured are stills of CCTV footage outside the ground which show a number of football fans police are trying to identify as potential troublemakers on the day.
ardiff's Football Intelligence Unit are leading the investigation.
Anyone who recognises any of those pictured are asked to contact DC Simon Chivers at Cardiff Central Police on 029 2052 7277 alternatively 07816 321071.
Alternatively contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
******************************************************** Police close in on football riot suspects
POLICE received a "fantastic" response following an appeal to identify 11 Newport County fans they believe fought with riot police and threw glass bottles at opposing fans.
Officers from South Wales Police have identified seven of the men pictured in yesterday's Argus following disturbances after an FAW Premier Cup clash with Cardiff City at Ninian Park.
Three of the men have come forward themselves and the other four were identified by readers and police officers in Gwent and South Wales.
C Simon Chivers, heading up the investigation, said officers were arranging to speak with those identified next week. He said they would be arrested for alleged public order offences.
Police say the 11 men were part of a group of 30 County fans who threw punches at officers trying to restrain them, according to police.
South Wales Police launched Operation Meirion following post-match disorder after the match on Tuesday, February 19.
DC Chivers said officers had CCTV footage of the 11 men committing public order offences after County fans surged toward a 40-man police cordon.
He said some supporters, who had travelled to Cardiff early looking to fight Cardiff fans, fought with batton-wielding police and had to be moved back by a riot squad during the clash on Sloper Road, near Ninian Park.
Eighteen members of the group have already been identified and DC Chivers said one man had been charged with allegedly kicking a police dog in the head.
"We have received a fantastic response and we are confident we will identify the other four pictured very soon," he added.
DC Chivers said some pictured County fans had contacted officers to protest their innocence.
But he said: "They have been told there is strong video evidence they have committed a public order offence."
Anyone who recognises any of those pictured are asked to contact DC Simon Chivers at Cardiff Central Police on 029 2052 7277 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111

| Newcastle vs Sunderland: Derby day brawls closed train station - 22/04/2008
Source: http://www.shieldsgazette.com
FOOTBALL yobs ran across train tracks to fight each other after Sunday's Tyne-Wear derby. Newcastle Central Station had to be closed for an hour as police broke up clashes between Newcastle United and Sunderland supporters.
Trouble flared after a plan to keep rival fans apart at the station was thwarted by a faulty train door.
Sunderland fans were escorted to the station from St James's Park so they could be safely boarded on trains to take them back home after the game.
However, some Black Cats supporters had to be evacuated from a train just after 5pm because of a faulty door, leaving only a track separating the two sets of fans.
While waiting for another train to arrive, the fans started taunting each other, then a group of Sunderland supporters crossed the track and began to fight with their rivals on the opposite platform.
The station was closed for more than an hour as police with dogs were used to restore order. Another police escort was then put in place to prevent further disruption.
One man, in his 40s, was arrested and charged with public disorder following the clash at the station. The man, one of four fans arrested for public order offences on the day, has been released on bail. A further 13 arrests were made for drink-related offences.
A British Transport Police spokeswoman said there were 600 football fans in the station at one point, 220 of them from Sunderland.
She added: "The station was shut down at about 5pm to keep the fans apart. It was all going to plan, but then the faulty door meant only a train track separated the fans.
"After the situation calmed, the Sunder-land fans were taken to the Metro station to board an underground train. The station didn't open again until about 6.15pm."
Police alerted Metro operator Nexus of the situation, and it emptied carriages on two trains at Monument Metro station, so Sunderland fans could board safely at Central Station.
However, trouble flared again after the train arrived. A Sunderland fan is alleged to have punched a Newcastle supporter as the train doors opened, and police then stepped in.
Outside the station, police wearing riot gear had missiles thrown at them.
A Nexus spokesman said: "We were informed about the trouble going on upstairs on the station's main platform, so we devised a way to get the fans home safely at the drop of a hat.
"We emptied one carriage of two separate trains, and the system worked very well."

| Arrests made in football disorder crackdown - 22/04/2008
Source: http://www.thisislocallondon.co.uk
A POLICE operation to crack down on football hooligans led to 23 Millwall and Leeds fans being arrested.
The arrests were made by British Transport Police (BTP) and the Met at stations across the capital on Saturday (April 19).
This included 12 people who were arrested after the match when trouble flared up at London Bridge station.
Officers taking part in Operation Era made 32 football-related arrests across the country, only nine of these did not relate to the Millwall v Leeds game.
Most of the arrests related to public order and drugs offences.
BTP Superintendent for Operations Andy Ball said: "Fans who engage in football disorder on the railways are not welcome on the railways.
"We will seek banning orders to ensure that ordinary members of the public, along with law-abiding football supporters, can travel on the railway in safety."

27 arrests during derby clash
Police in Sunderland arrested 27 people during Saturday's derby clash with Middlesbrough. Fans of both teams were drinking in city centre pubs prior to the afternoon kick-off and officers said there were a few minor outbreaks of trouble.
However, Northumbria Police said these were quickly brought under control and the majority of fans behaved themselves.
A spokesman for the force said: "Overall the match took place without serious disturbance.
"Up to 3,000 away fans attended the match. Many fans, from both sides, were drinking in the city centre both before and after the match which did lead to isolated clashes of fans."
He said police quickly intervened to prevent any serious problems from escalating.
However, 27 people were arrested during the day, 24 inside the Stadium of Light and a further three outside, from drink related offences and to prevent public disorder, but all were later released.
Chief Inspector Neil Mackay, head of Northumbria Police operations unit, said: "The vast majority of fans behaved well and there was clearly a great atmosphere at the stadium.
"Twenty four arrests out of a crowd of 45,000 is still extremely low."
Ch Insp Mackay said he would like to thank all the stewards at the match for their help and commended his officers for remaining professional throughout.
He said: "Public safety is always our priority at any football match. This means any individual or groups who pose a risk will be promptly dealt with by Northumbria Police."
