Police have issued a CCTV image of a man they want to trace after a football fan was attacked ahead of a Sheffield United game earlier this year.

The victim was knocked unconscious while making his way to the game with Manchester City at Bramall Lane on 27 August, South Yorkshire Police said.

He suffered a head injury and a broken ankle, a spokesperson added.

Appealing for information, officers said they were keen to identify the man pictured.

He is described as a white man in his 40s, around 6ft 3in (1.91m) tall and of a medium build with short hair

It is believed he is a Sheffield United supporter and was wearing a green or khaki-coloured soft shell style jacket, police said.

The victim was punched in the face as he left the underpass going under St Mary's Gate roundabout towards Bramall Lane.

Santos fans were livid, and police had to hold back fans who were trying to enter the pitch, while players fled to the safety of the changing rooms. One banner shown by fans in the stadium read: "Second, sometimes. In the second, never.”

And away from the stadium, videos showed cars were set on fire as fans took out their frustrations on the surroundings. According to reports in Brazil, one of these cars set alight belonged to Santos' Mendoza.

More away fans are being banned from attending matches in France after the death of a supporter in Nantes last weekend prompted authorities to call for a crackdown on violence.

Sports minister Amelie Oudea-Castera said this week that preventing supporters from traveling to rival clubs could help to restore calm following a series of incidents this season.

The message has been heard.

Reims said on Thursday that its fans were not authorized to travel to Nice because their French league match on Sunday in the Riviera city has been identified as “at risk” of violence.

“Stade de Reims has therefore closed the sale of tickets in the visitors’ sector for this match, and will automatically refund all Reims fans who had already booked their tickets,” Reims said.

Lyon fans were not allowed to attend Wednesday’s 3-0 loss at Marseille, and Lens supporters have been banned from travelling to Friday’s match in Montpellier.

In France, traveling fans are regularly banned from high-risk games such as those pitting together bitter rivals Paris Saint-Germain and Marseille. But Oudea-Castera suggested the measure could be used more often.

Marseille fans at their Stade Velodrome deployed banners protesting such bans before their team’s match against Lyon. “Banned from traveling in the country of freedoms. Today more than ever, freedom for ultras,” their message read, in a reference to diehard fans often described as “ultras.”

The Nantes fan who died last week was killed following a fight between supporters before the club’s 1-0 win over Nice. The public prosecutor’s office has launched an investigation into voluntary manslaughter.

Standard supporters interrupt the Clasico in the 87th minute

Sad spectacle, once again, during the Clasico Anderlecht-Standard this Thursday evening. While the Mauves led 2-0 and were in numerical superiority after the exclusion of Price, Standard supporters began throwing projectiles at the goal defended by Dupé. Beers, seats and smoke bombs, everything was there.

Jonathan Lardot was therefore forced to interrupt the match, which seemed to have ended, four minutes from time. The two teams were sent back to the locker room..

Finally, after more than ten minutes, the game was able to resume.

Greek policeman severely injured in attack by fans during Athens volleyball match

A Greek policeman was severely injured late Thursday when a mob of volleyball fans poured out of an Athens arena and attacked riot police outside.

State ERT television said a flare shot by a rioter severed a thigh artery in the 30-year-old officer, who was reported in critical condition at a hospital.

The violence occurred during a volleyball match between crosstown rivals Olympiakos and Panathinaikos. The game was abandoned when the fighting erupted outside the arena.

ERT said about 150 people left the arena during the game to attack riot police stationed outside with flares, gasoline bombs and stones, and then returned to the venue.

Police made heavy use of tear gas, much of which wafted into the indoor sports ground. Officers also prevented spectators from leaving the arena amid efforts to identify the person who fired the flare.

Prosecutors have given the green light for the release on bail of 30 Croatian nationals arrested in August after a 29-year old man died in violent clashes between soccer clubs fans in Athens.



More than 100 people, most of them Croatian nationals, have been detained since August pending trial over the violence before a UEFA Champions League match between AEK Athens and Dinamo Zagreb that led to AEK fan Michalis Katsouris being stabbed to death. More than 70 of them are still detained in Athens.

The fans were released on condition that they pay a bond and do not return to Greece to attend a match

The applications for release of the remaining 65 non-nationals are expected to be heard in the coming hours, the semi-official AMNA news agency said.

Clashes between supporters and the police interrupts Coupe de France fixture

Valenciennes FC’s visit to FC Mulhouse in the eighth round of the Coupe de France was interrupted after clashes between supporters and the police broke out, in the latest incident of crowd troubles impacting French football.

L’Alsace reported that the game was stopped after only eight minutes of play when the police allegedly attempted to arrest a Mulhouse supporter in possession of a pyrotechnic device.

Fights between the police and the ultras groups broke out as they attempted to arrest this individual, to which the police responded by using tear gas.

The gas then quickly spread to the surrounding sections of the stadium leading to a partial evacuation of the ground, with some people needing treatment from the emergency services present at the Stade de L’Ill due to the teargas, while a police officer suffered minor injuries to the face.

This led to a delay of twenty minutes before the game between the side from the Championnat National 3 and their Ligue 2 visitors could be resumed.

All top-flight soccer matches in Greece will be played without fans in the stadiums for the next two months, in the latest crackdown on supporter violence following a sport-related riot last week that left a police officer with life-threatening injuries.

The government said Monday that it would introduce emergency legislation to make the ban on supporters effective immediately. It will end on Feb. 12 with a possible extension to follow.

This past weekend’s professional soccer matches were postponed following a series of violent incidents at matches and last week’s riot that occurred outside a volleyball game believed to be led by organized soccer fan groups.

The 31-year-old police officer who was injured in the clashes remains hospitalized in a coma after being hit in the left leg by a flare, causing extensive bleeding and cardiac arrest.

“This murderous attack against a policeman is not the first incident of extreme fan violence in recent years. Criminals in the guise of sports fans are committing serious offenses, seriously injuring and killing people,” government spokesman Pavlos Marinakis told reporters.

He said all 14 clubs competing in the top-flight Super League will have to install surveillance cameras inside stadiums and use personalized ticketing systems that require the holder to show identification upon entry before being allowed to admit supporters.

The security systems, including a network of high-resolution surveillance cameras inside stadiums, would have to adhere to standards set by soccer’s governing body in Europe, UEFA, Marinakis said.

An 18-year-old man has been arrested and taken into police custody in connection with the police officer’s injury to face charges of attempted murder. The man, who has not been identified, appeared at an arraignment hearing Monday after being escorted to court in handcuffs by police. He was given until Thursday to prepare his defense.

Violence has plagued Greek soccer for decades despite repeated efforts to crack down on the supporters’ associations blamed for the attacks, mostly outside stadiums.

Olympiakos, under new Portuguese head coach Carlos Carvalhal, will face Serbia’s Backa Topola in the Europa League at home Thursday without fans as a result of the decision.
