Sources close to Uefa claim the Polish side's fans face being banned from all future away games.

West Midlands Police confirmed 46 Legia fans are in custody following last night's serious disorder outside Villa Park.

They will be charged with offences including violent disorder, assaulting police officers and possession of weapons.

The chaos, which lasted for more than 90 minutes, was described by one police officer as "the worst violence I've experienced in 28 years."

Mounted police joined riot police and dog handlers as they battled to disperse around 2,000 Legia fans who had been penned into a nearby car park prior to kick-off.

Four officers were injured in the disorder, which saw them attacked with flares, bricks, metal poles and tree branches.

A statement issued by West Midlands Police revealed: "One officer's fluorescent jacket caught fire after they were hit with a flare.

"Fortunately his jacket was removed quickly and he was not injured.

"He was later taken to hospital with smoke inhalation after the smoke from the flare made it into his helmet.

"Another officer suffered a minor hand injury while a police dog and a police horse were injured in the disorder."

Assistant Chief Constable Damian Barratt said: "This was appalling and completely unacceptable disorder.

"What we saw was 90 minutes of planned violence, with one officer saying it was the worst he had seen in 28 years of policing.

Police have charged 46 men after 'serious disorder' from Legia Warsaw fans before their side's Europa Conference League game against Aston Villa.



A statement from the West Midlands Police said: "We've charged 46 men over Thursday night's violence outside Villa Park. Of those, 43 have been charged with a public order offence, while two have been charged with assaulting police officers and another has been charged with possession of a knife.

"Those charged are aged between 21 and 63, and around 40 are believed to be from Poland. A small number are believed to be UK residents. We are continuing to review CCTV and body-worn video footage to identify further suspects in what was an appalling and violent public disorder. It is now known five officers suffered minor injuries in the disorder.

In an official statement published on Saturday, Legia Warsaw blamed the U.K. club for the incident, saying it did not listen to any tips relayed by the Polish club to ensure safety and even escalated the already tense atmosphere by reducing the number of tickets for Legia Warsaw fans.

“Regrettably, as a consequence of both actions and inactions by the Aston Villa F.C. club, unfavorable incidents unfolded yesterday. In declining to embrace our constructive critiques and recommendations, the hosts bear full responsibility for the situation,” Legia Warsaw wrote.

The club also added that it is not responsible for people who have no official ties to the football club. “No club should bear accountability for the actions of unidentified individuals lacking match tickets,” it stated.

British police said on Saturday that 46 mostly Polish citizens have been charged after “serious disorder outside” Villa Park on Thursday in the build-up to a Europa Conference League soccer game between Legia Warsaw and Aston Villa, in which authorities said three officers were injured.

“Of those, 43 have been charged with a public order offense, while two have been charged with assaulting police officers and another has been charged with possession of a knife,” West Midlands Police said in a statement.

“Those charged are aged between 21 and 63, and around 40 are believed to be from Poland. A small number are believed to be U.K. residents,” West Midlands Police added.

Police said all apart from one of the men were due in court on Saturday and a special court had been set up at Birmingham magistrates court to begin hearing the cases this morning.

Nantes fan dies after reported stabbing before match vs. Nice

Nantes said one of their supporters died on Saturday following an assault that took place before the club's 1-0 win over Nice in France's Ligue 1, amid reports the fan was stabbed.

Nantes said in a statement overnight that the fan was "fatally injured" close to the club's stadium.

According to L'Equipe newspaper, the fan was a member of the Brigade Loire, Nantes' main group of passionate fans.

"In circumstances which are the subject of an ongoing judicial investigation, the 31-year-old collapsed, hit in the back," the club said. "Despite the intervention of emergency services, the fan could not be saved."

Nantes said the public prosecutor's office has launched an investigation into voluntary manslaughter.

"Witnesses interviews are underway and will continue throughout the night," the club added.

Quoting a statement from the prosecutor's office, L'Equipe said the Nantes fan collapsed after several vehicles carrying Nice supporters to the Beaujoire stadium were attacked by rival groups.

He was part of the convoy of seven VTC drivers who were to bring Nice supporters to the Beaujoire stadium this Saturday, December 2, 2023 to attend the meeting between OGC Nice and FC Nantes. He tells his version of the facts.

The man met the day after the events, Sunday December 3, is still in shock.

David Tan is a VTC driver and he expresses his emotion.

“I sympathize with the pain of the supporters. If we lose someone before going to a match, it’s sad” he said.

And he recounts this evening which turned into a nightmare when he and other colleagues were responsible for transporting 30 supporters of the Nice team.

“I was at the head of the procession and as we arrived near the Halvèque stop in Nantes, we saw a pack of 300 people arriving, dressed in black. They jumped on my vehicle to extricate the young people inside. It hit, it broke” testifies David Tan.

The pack that arrived is a swarm of bees. Yellow and green hooded.

“There were seven vehicles. Including two vans. Me, at the head of the procession, my other colleagues behind” specifies the driver.

“And the last van, when he saw all this mass, he backed away, he left. He didn’t even drop off the Nice supporters at the stadium. They took them back to their hotel because they feared for their safety quite simply“, he adds.

According to this witness, one of the drivers of the procession was injured and had to be hospitalized.

“He got into a fight with people from the Loire Brigade. I had a bruise on her hand and almost took a glass bottle to the head. His vehicle was requisitioned by the police. There is a camera filming everything on it. He must go to the Nantes police station when he leaves the hospital.the driver says.

It’s a hooligan horde. There are too many attacks, too much violence in our country currently linked to football. What happened in Lyon, what happened in Nantes for a man with his son who was attacked, it is no longer possible.

Incidentally, David Tan states: “There was no police supervision and no police escort while the young supporters called“.

The Nantes driver was interviewed by investigators as a witness during the evening of Saturday December 2, 2023 and he emerged free.

France’s sports minister called for “a global and extraordinarily determined response” to violence in soccer after the death of a Nantes supporter over the weekend.

Speaking to France Inter radio on Monday, Amelie Oudea-Castera said preventing fans from traveling to away matches could form part of the solution when games present a risk of violence.

“For the time being we have to focus on fans’ travels. It’s essential that we now return to a less violent situation...we need a global and extraordinarily determined response,” she said.

The Nantes supporter was killed on Saturday following a fight between fans that took place before the club’s 1-0 win over Nice in the latest outbreak of violence to mar French football this season. The public prosecutor’s office has launched an investigation into voluntary manslaughter.

In France, traveling fans are regularly banned from “high-risk” games such as those pitting together bitter rivals Paris Saint-Germain and Marseille.

A blanket ban would certainly help authorities control crowds with more efficiency, but such a decision would likely be challenged by fans’ groups arguing it would breach their fundamental right to move freely.

“It’s just not possible that police forces are so overstretched, that private property is destroyed, that buses are stoned and people injured,” Oudea-Castera said.

There have been repeated incidents in French football since the start of the season following an upsurge of violence in stadiums over the past two campaigns.

In October, in Montpellier, a match was stopped in added time after fans threw a firework from the stands that landed next to Clermont goalkeeper Mory Diaw. The Senegal player had to be taken off on a stretcher, but was not seriously injured.

A few weeks later in Marseille, the bus carrying Lyon players was stoned by fans outside the Velodrome stadium. The Lyon coach then, Fabio Grosso, was left with his face bloodied. Supporters were also targeted, five police officers were injured and nine people placed in custody.

Another episode of violence broke out in Montpellier when a bus transporting Brest fans home was attacked as they left the southern city following a 3-1 win for the away team. Their bus was hit by rocks reportedly thrown from a motorway bridge.

Oudea-Castera said France is not the only country to struggle with soccer violence, citing clashes between law enforcement forces and supporters of Eintracht Frankfurt that left some 50 officers injured in Germany last month.

The death of the Nantes supporter brought back sad memories of the time when hooliganism was particularly acute among PSG fans. In November 2006, Julien Quemener, a member of the Boulogne Boys fan group, was shot and killed by an off-duty police officer after a UEFA Cup match against Hapoel Tel Aviv.

About four years later, PSG fan Yann Lorence died after being caught up in fighting before a match against Marseille, when about 130 thugs from Kop Boulogne charged their Auteuil rivals. Outside France, Toulouse fan Brice Taton was killed in front of a downtown cafe in Belgrade before a match against Partizan Belgrade.

Lyon will return to Marseille amid heightened security measures Wednesday to play a game that was postponed after the team’s bus was attacked by fans throwing rocks in October.

The rescheduled match comes just four days after the death of a fan ahead of a French league game that marked a new low in a season marred by violence.

The match between Marseille and Lyon was initially scheduled on Oct. 29 but was postponed after fans threw rocks and other projectiles at the Lyon bus and then-coach Fabio Grosso needed stitches in his forehead after being hit by broken glass.

Lyon fans have not been allowed to travel to the rescheduled game, which takes place in the wake of the incident in the western city of Nantes, where a fan was killed during a fight close to the stadium before a game between Nantes and Nice.

The match in Marseille will be under close scrutiny, with local authorities under pressure to deliver an effective security plan.

France Sports Minister Amélie Oudéa-Castéra has revealed that Olympique Lyonnais fans will be banned from travelling for the rearranged match against Olympique de Marseille on Wednesday 6th December.

The match was initially scheduled to take place on Sunday 29th October. However, the game ultimately did not go ahead. Lyon’s team bus was attacked en route to the Vélodrome by Marseille fans. Projectiles thrown at the bus smashed the window next to manager Fabio Grosso. The Italian manager suffered a significant facial injury, which required 12 stitches, whilst Lyon’s other six buses, which were carrying fans to the match, were also attacked. Whilst OL’s fans did make it into the stadium, the game was postponed just minutes before the scheduled kick-off.
