Mainz beats Frankfurt amid protests against Monday games
Mainz defeated local rival Eintracht Frankfurt 2-1 in a derby game delayed by flares and marked by more protests against the unpopular Monday night games in the Bundesliga.
Kickoff was delayed after flares from the Frankfurt fans’ end landed on the pitch, sending plumes of smoke billowing through the stadium and prompting referee Manuel Gräfe to lead the players back off the pitch. Frankfurt captain Sebastian Rode and teammate Filip Kostic approached the team’s fans to ask if they were done, but another flare landed on the pitch once they left.
Gräfe finally started the game 11 minutes late, but the atmosphere remained uncharacteristically quiet for the first 15 minutes and 30 seconds with fans staying silent to show their ongoing disapproval of Monday night games.
Every Monday night game in the Bundesliga has been marked by protests this season.
A giant banner in front of Mainz fans said: "Saturday, three thirty: football, bratwurst, beer."
The stadium announcer warned fans to be careful because the protective net behind the goal had to be removed due to damage from the pyrotechnics.

Bordeaux ultras storm pitch and cause 27-minute delay … then team win 6-0
Dozens of Bordeaux fans stormed on to the pitch during their Ligue 1 match against Nîmes, forcing the game to be halted for 25 minutes.
The angry supporters staged a protest on the touchline, causing the referee, Clément Turpin, to stop the game after 11 minutes and send both teams back into the dressing rooms. Bordeaux’s group of hardcore fans, known as the Ultramarines, were demanding the resignation of the longtime president, Frédéric Longuépée, despite the club’s impressive season so far.

Fans fight on the pitch as trouble erupts at the Blackpool v Fleetwood game.
Trouble flared at the Blackpool v Fleetwood match yesterday as supporters ran onto the pitch forcing police and stewards to intervene.
In one ugly incident, a pitch invader was chased by stewards as two rival fans also ran onto the playing surface to confront and fight the youth.
Stewards and police moved in as angry fans in the stadium were incited by the incident.
An eye witness said trouble erupted after Blackpool scored their third goal.
They said: "A Blackpool fan ran onto the pitch to confront the Fleetwood supporters, then a Fleetwood fan also ran on where he evaded the stewards for a good couple of minutes.
"The two sets of fans were then fighting each other in the South East corner while the game was temporarily halted.
"I saw the police take away the Fleetwood fan."

Man City working with police over alleged racial abuse in derby as Solskjaer calls for action
Manchester City are working with police to investigate allegations of racial abuse after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said two Manchester United players were targeted in the derby. During the second half of United's 2-1 win at the Etihad Stadium, the visitors' midfielder Fred seemed to be hit by an object thrown from the crowd as he prepared to take a corner. Lighters and a plastic bottle could be seen by the corner flag while television footage appeared to show a supporter making racist gestures in the direction of Brazil international Fred and his team-mate Jesse Lingard. Shortly after full-time, City released a statement saying they were investigating and threatened to issue life bans to any individual found to have committed racial abuse. Fred hit by object during Manchester derby and seemingly subjected to racist abuse "Manchester City FC are aware of a video circulating on social media which appears to show a supporter making racial gestures during the second half of the match against Manchester United this evening," their statement read. "Officials from the club are working with Greater Manchester Police in order to help them identify any individuals concerned and assist with their enquiries. "The club are also working with GMP regarding an instance of objects being thrown onto the field of play. "The club operates a zero-tolerance policy regarding discrimination of any kind, and anyone found guilty of racial abuse will be banned from the club for life." Solskjaer confirmed he had seen the incident and he too called for anyone found guilty of such abuse to be banned from grounds for life. "I've seen it on video, of course," he told Sky Sports. "Fred and Jesse in the corner taking coins from the City fans, first of all, so they've got to go away. Then there's this not-so-intelligent fella chanting racist abuse towards my two players. "I hope City and the authorities will deal with it because he shouldn't be watching football again, not live anyway. "We have to stamp it out. We keep talking about that every single week and it's not acceptable and he should not be allowed back into grounds. That's how simple it is."

Greater Manchester Police Arrest 41-Year-Old Man Amid Allegations Of Racism At Man United Players
A man has been arrested following allegations of racist abuse at the Manchester derby on Saturday night.
Greater Manchester Police have held a 41-year-old man on suspicion of a racially aggravated public order after widely-shared footage appeared to show a City supporter making monkey gestures towards United’s Fred and Jesse Lingard.
A spokesperson for the force confirmed the arrest and said the man remained in custody on Sunday for questioning.
His stands in the bottom row next to the corner flag and continues to make hand gestures
Brazilian midfielder Fred was also pelted with missiles, including cigarette lighters, when he went to take a corner in the same part of the Etihad Stadium during United’s 2-1 victory.
Greater Manchester Police say they were initially called to reports of a fan making racists ‘gestures and sounds towards players’ before the game had finished.
Superintendent Chris Hill, of the City of Manchester Division, said: ‘I would like to thank the public for their ongoing support with this incident. Racism of any kind has no place in football or our society and I hope this arrest shows that we are taking this matter extremely seriously. We will continue to work with Manchester City and Manchester United Football clubs on this incident and will investigate any other lines of enquiries.’
City were quick to issue a statement on Saturday night saying that they would work with the police. They added that the offender, should he be identified, would be banned for life from the Etihad Stadium.

Lyon players clash with own fans after Memphis Depay confronts supporter over banner
Lyon's progression to the Champions League knockout was marred by clashes between players and fans - led by Memphis Depay.
The French side came from 2-0 down to beat RB Leipzig, thanks to second half strikes from Houssem Aouar and Depay - which saw them edge Benfica to second place in Group G.
But celebrations on the final whistle quickly turned to anger when a supporter ran onto the pitch with a banner calling defender Marcelo a donkey with the message "Marcelo leave the club."
Former Manchester United winger Depay quickly ran over to the man waving the banner next to the goal to confront him and defend his teammate.
He attempted to grab the banner, although did not physically attack the man holding it, but it was enough to start a scuffle at the bottom of the stands.
The banner was quickly passed to a friend in the stands, who took it away.
Depay had to be forcibly removed from the situation by his teammates, as more Ultras began to rush towards the advertising hoardings.
Ultras 'Bad Gones' at the Groupama Stadium were already tetchy after the Lyon stars failed to go over and thank them for their support.
Centre back Marcelo is a boo boy among Lyon fans after clashing with ultras.
He made a high profile mistake in their Champions League fixture with Benfica - which led to the fans waiting at Lisbon airport to confront him.
