Birmingham City - Aston Vila - Carling Cup - 01/12/2010

Source : birminghammail.net

HUNDREDS of Birmingham City fans invaded the pitch at the final whistle after watching their team dump Aston Villa out of the Carling Cup, sparking ugly scenes as they confronted the visiting supporters.

They ran the full length of the pitch to stand just metres away from end where Aston Villa fans were packed.

Only a line of stewards and police officers wearing riot gear prevented the two sets of fans from clashing as they taunted each other.

Running battles between police and fans on the pitch went on for around 15 minutes.

At one stage two flares appeared to be thrown into the Villa fans and were then hurled back on to the Blues supporters on the pitch.

Tannoy announcement repeatedly urged fans to get off the pitch and leave the stadium.

Eventually police forced Blues fans back into their own stand but more objects and missiles appeared to be thrown at them as fans left the stadium

Police later said that ten people were injured either before during or after the game including four fans, three police officers and three stewards.

They were believed to have been taken to hospital with minor injuries.
Police said that six people had been arrested during the trouble.
Trouble appeared to be brewing earlier when riot police kept opposing supporters apart as they arrived for the game – and came under fire from bottles and other missiles.

Flares and fireworks were lit in the street at one point as tempers flared between rival groups and police forced supporters away from each other.

One man was seen being led away by police outside the ground with blood pouring from a head wound.

The first group of Villa supporters arriving by coach appeared to be given a raucous but good-natured welcome by Blues fans.

About 20 coaches arrived with police outriders and vans and the fans were taken straight inside the ground 45 minutes before kick-off.

But later, when other Villa fans arrived on foot from the town centre at about 7.30pm, hundreds of Blues fans waiting in Coventry Road were pushed back towards Small Heath by lines of officers wearing riot gear.

They were warned over a loud-hailer: “Move back or officers with baton will be deployed.”

A number of bottles and missiles were then hurled towards police as supporters retreated and flares and fireworks were lit in the street.

About 1,000 Villa fans were then marched up Coventry Road towards St Andrew’s, flanked by vans and dog handlers.

Violence flares as 27 hurt at Blues v Villa clash

Seven people were arrested and 27 injured amid violent scenes at the end of the Carling Cup quarter-final clash between Birmingham City and Aston Villa.

A flare was thrown and seats ripped out and hurled at fans at Birmingham City’s St Andrew’s ground after Blues beat their bitter rivals 2-1 last night.

More pictures here.

One man was knocked unconscious and five people needed hospital treatment. Two police dogs were also injured after they were struck by missiles.

The violent pitch invasion, involving more than 1,000 fans, followed City’s victory.

Birmingham City fans were see to run across the pitch to taunt rival fans in the Gil Merrick Stand following the final whistle.

Around 200 seats are believed to have been ripped out by VIlla fans and used as missiles which were thrown onto the pitch, along with coins and plastic bottles. A flare was thrown into the section housing the Villa supporters then tossed backwards and forwards between the rival factions.

A total of 500 officers were policing last night’s match, the first midweek clash between the clubs since ugly scenes seven years ago.

The figure is around five times the usual police presence for a Premiership match. Police formed a barracade between the rival set of fans as violence erupted.

Superintendent Steve Graham, who was responsible for policing the game, said: “This incident must have been very frightening for the vast majority of spectators who enjoyed the match and did not cause any problems.

“Around 1,000 fans made it onto the pitch and officers put themselves in harms way to keep the fans apart.”

An investigation is now under way.

Italy: Policemen gets stiffer sentence for football fan's death - 02/12/2010

Source : AKI

An Italian police officer has been jailed for the murder of a football fan in central Italy three years ago. A court in the central Italian city of Florence late on Wednesday sentenced Luigi Spaccarotella on appeal to nine years and four months in prison for shooting dead 26--year-old Gabriele Sandri at a motorway service station near the town of Arezzo on 11 November 2007.

"This is very right. In fact, Spaccarotella probably deserved more than nine years and four months in prison," a Lazio supporter and former paramilitary police officer, Gianluca Sterrantino, told Adnkronos International (AKI) on Thursday, commenting on the sentence.

"He clearly intended to kill," Sterrantino added.

Prosecutors had asked for a 14-year jail term for Spaccarotella on appeal.

A lower court in 2009 convicted Spaccarotella of Sandri's manslaughter and convicted him to six years in jail, sparking anger and dismay from Sandri's family and Lazio fans.

Sandri's family on Tuesday welcomed the longer sentence handed to Spaccarotella, which was greeted with cheers from the slain Lazio supporter's friends when it was read out in the courtroom. They embraced Sandri's parents as they left court.

"This ruling is true to the real version of events," said his father, Giorgio Sandri. "Justice has been done, I feel proud to be Italian."

Spaccarotella, who did not attend court on Wednesday, said he was "dismayed" by the verdict.

"I am dismayed. I don't feel I am a killer," he said in a telegram sent by his lawyer. He claims his pistol went off by mistake.

Spaccarotella apparently aimed his pistol from a distance of 60 metres at a car exiting the service station at Badia al Pino, with Sandri inside. Sandri, one of four passengers, was hit in the neck. He and his companions were travelling see Lazio play Inter in Milan and had just scuffled with Juventus fans.

Spaccarotella said he thought the Renault Megane's occupants had robbed the service station and were making a rapid getaway.

Sandri's killing sparked a night of violence around Rome's Olympic stadium, in which a police officer was struck with a metal bar. Several rightwing hooligans, mainly Lazio fans, where convicted of fomenting the riots, in which around 500 fans attacked three police stations and the headquarters of the Italian Olympic Committee.

Incidents also took place in Bergamo, Milan and in other Italian cities, and led to the suspension of many Serie A matches.

Football Fan banned following York riot - 02/12/2010

Source : yorkpress.co.uk

A FOOTBALL fan who was among a gang of rioting Hull City hooligans in York City centre has been banned from attending home games for three years.

Ross Michael Smith, 24, has been banned from Hull City games, both home and away, after repeated violence including the pre-season friendly match against York City on July 17.

The match saw one of York’s biggest-ever deployments of riot police to deal with the trouble in Lendal Cellars after 40 to 50 Hull fans took over the pub, hours before the match was due to take place.

Streets adjacent to the pub were sealed off for hours until armed officers marched the fans back to the railway station.

Smith, of Alliance Avenue, west Hull, was banned along with Shane Cooper, 24, who was among the rioting fans.

Humberside Police applied for the banning orders after the men were involved in repeated fighting.

Both men were also involved in incidents against Nottingham Forest supporters, and Smith took part in fights after West Ham fixtures and a World Cup game.

Smith has been given a three-year football banning order by Hull Magistrates Court.

He is banned from attending a town or city where Hull City has an away fixture both four hours before the game and two hours after the game.

He is also banned from entering an area within half-a-mile of the KC Stadium when Hull City are playing at home, both four hours before the game starts and two hours after it finishes.

Cooper, of 10th Avenue, north Hull, has been given a three-year football banning order and is banned from attending a town or city where Hull City has an away fixture before and after the game.

He is also banned from entering an area within a mile-and-a-half of the KC Stadium when Hull City are playing at home, before and after the game.

UK : Football-related arrests fall by 10% - 01/12/2010

Source : The Press Association

West Ham fans have been issued the second highest amount of banning orders out of any club in the Premier League.

Overall, the number of people arrested for football-related disorder fell by 10% last season, figures have shown. A total of 3,391 English and Welsh fans were arrested at international and domestic games in 2009/10, down 395 from the previous season.

The figures were welcomed as Prime Minister David Cameron flies to Zurich to lobby Fifa executive committee members ahead of their all-important vote in the Swiss city. The sport's global governing body will announce on Thursday who is to host the 2018 tournament, with England facing tough competition from Russia, as well as joint bids by Spain/Portugal and Belgium/Netherlands.

The figures showed there were no arrests at 70% of games and 92% of those whose football banning orders have expired since 2000 were assessed by police as no longer posing a risk of football disorder.

No English or Welsh fans were arrested for disorder at the World Cup in South Africa, compared with almost 950 who were expelled from Belgium in one night during Euro 2000.

But Crime Prevention Minister James Brokenshire said nobody was complacent. "Police will continue to work with fans and use all the tools at their disposal to ensure that we continue setting a benchmark for the world," he said.

In all, 3,248 football banning orders were in place on November 19, including 105 against Newcastle United fans - 10% of all the banning orders in the Premier League and the most of any team at that level - 91 against West Ham fans and 86 against Wolves fans.

In the Championship, Leeds United fans topped the list with 152 banning orders - the most of any club in England and Wales - followed by Cardiff City (125) and Millwall (100). Fans of Yeovil Town in League One and Accrington Stanley and Stevenage in League Two were the only groups with no banning orders, the figures showed.

Turkey : Besiktas - Bursaspor - 05/12/2010

Source : Reuters + turkish press (pictures)

Turkish fans injured in clashes ahead of match

Turkish football fans were in hospital with knife injuries after clashes ahead of a premier league match between Besiktas and defending champions Bursaspor in Istanbul on Sunday, media reports said.

At least one other person was being treated in hospital for his injuries, the state-run Anatolian news agency reported.

Thousands of Besiktas fans threw rocks and bottles to break through a police cordon and attack some 1,200 Bursaspor supporters, CNN Turk said.

The channel showed footage of police using batons and tear gas to break up the skirmishes outside Besiktas's Inonu Stadium.

Bursaspor fans blame Besiktas for their side's relegation to the second division in 2003 after the Istanbul club played badly against another team facing possible relegation.

Since then, encounters between the fans have often led to violence.

Blackpool FC - Manchester United - 04/12/2010

Source : blackpoolgazette.co.uk

Fans arrested in flare drama

A GROUP of football fans were arrested after a flare was set off inside a packed supporters' coach.
Around 30 Manchester United fans were onboard the vehicle as police escorted it out of Blackpool when the flare was ignited.

It was allegedly thrown up on to a luggage rack as the coach was travelling down Squires Gate Lane in South Shore.

Witnesses described hearing a loud bang before the coach stopped as it filled with smoke.

Police say the fans - who had originally planned to see United's Premier League clash with Blackpool before it was called off due to Bloomfield Road's frozen pitch - had earlier been refused entry at The Manchester pub on the Promenade.

Insp Paul Boyes, from Blackpool Police, said: "Our local support unit was called and the aim was to escort the coach back down to the motorway. Someone on the coach has possibly set off a flare and the coach had to pull over.

"It's a stupid thing to do. It's a danger to the coach and the occupants and it's not something that is going to be tolerated, hence the action taken."

Six men - a 20-year-old, three 30-year-olds, a 38-year-old and a 39-year-old - from Manchester were arrested on suspicion of a public order offence and were taken to Blackpool police station for questioning.

Two fire crews, four police cars, a police van as well as two operational support unit vans were called to the scene of the incident at 6.20pm on Saturday.

John Hancock, firefighter at St Annes fire station, said: "The lads were very boisterous. It was a dangerous thing to do - flares get very hot, it could have injured someone on the coach.

"The coach was full of smoke which we cleared using a ventilation unit.
"There was damage to the coach's roof and parcel shelf due to the heat from the flare. Flares are like very large sparklers, they burn at a very high temperature."

Eyewitnesses described seeing "the whole coach go up in smoke".
Bob Taylor, 59, who was watching the drama unfold as he waited outside Blackpool Airport, said: "There was a big bang and the coach pulled over. The whole coach went up in smoke. Everyone got off and then the police were there within five minutes. The police were everywhere."

The coach driver, who works for Manchester-based coach company, Mayne, was not injured in the incident.

A spokesman for Mayne said: "He was very stressed with everything that happened on Saturday night but he's OK."

Russia to probe football fan murder - 09/12/2010

Source : AFP

RUSSIA has ordered a high-level probe and arrested a suspect in the shooting dead of a football fan.

The move came after about 1,000 protesters blocked a Moscow highway, some shouting racist slogans.

The protesters also let off flares and firecrackers in an incident that came just days after the authorities celebrated the awarding of the 2018 football World Cup to Russia.

The victim, Yegor Sviridov, 28, was a dedicated fan of the Spartak Moscow football team, one of the top Russian premiership sides which has an impassioned support base in the capital, investigators said.

Witnesses said Sviridov was shot in the head on Saturday night in a mass fight with men from the Russian Caucasus. Another Spartak fan was shot in the stomach, the Kommersant daily reported.

The incident exposed the close relationship between football fans and nationalist groups.

The protesters on Tuesday evening chanted "Russia for Russians" and "Moscow for Muscovites" and many wore masks, an amateur video posted on YouTube showed. The video can be seen at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qkSjg4Q3C3c

The racist Movement against Illegal Immigration announced the protest on its website, calling Sviridov "a member of the right", and later posted videos and photographs.

More than 1,000 protesters met outside the district prosecutor's office and then spontaneously blocked one direction of the Leningradskoye Shosse highway in northern Moscow for about half-an-hour, Kommersant reported.

Police were unusually friendly to protesters, Kommersant said, in contrast to their rough handling of other unsanctioned protests for gay rights or political freedoms.

A spokesman for the northern police district told the RIA Novosti news agency that he did not hear any racist slogans and that both police and fans behaved "very correctly", despite Interfax saying some carried iron bars.

Russia's top investigator Alexander Bastrykin reacted to appease protesters in a statement Wednesday, saying the investigation would move up to city-level because of the "public response".

He directly referred to an appeal from an organised Spartak fan club called Fratriya, posted on Tuesday, asking him to intervene to ensure the suspects were not allowed to escape justice.

Following Bastrykin's swift reaction, a suspect, Aslan Cherkesov, was arrested yesterday, Russian news agencies reported. He argued in court that the crime was self-defence, RIA Novosti reported.

Human rights activists criticised the authorities for turning a blind eye to the racist elements of the protest.

"Radical fans are quite a major threat to society, for all of us," said Galina Kozhevnikova of the Sova research centre into racism and nationalism, Interfax quoted.

"If a crowd walks down the street shouting racist slogans and goes unpunished, this is twice as much of a threat."

As Russia prepares to host the 2018 World Cup, its football fans -- some of whom model themselves on British hooligans, wearing the same fashion labels and calling themselves "firms" -- will be closely watched by the authorities.

Sviridov, whose fan nickname was Sedoi, or Grey-haired, was a member of Fratriya. Kommersant said he also was an active participant in one of the most aggressive fan groups, The Union.

In July, another Spartak fan, telejournalist Yury Volkov, was stabbed to death in a fight with men from the Russian Caucasus in a central Moscow park. A Chechen man has been charged with the crime.

The killing prompted fans to brandish banners with Volkov's name at matches and to hold several public protests.

Russian hooligans halt Champions League match

Russian football hooligans halted a Champions League match in Slovakia less than a week after Russia were elected as 2018 World Cup hosts.

Spartak Moscow recovered from a goal down to defeat Zilina 2-1 in the Group F 'dead rubber' but the match was marred by crowd trouble.

Fans launched a fire cracker on to the pitch and the teams were briefly led off by Dutch referee Kevin Blom after three minutes.

There were no apparent injuries after the missile came from an area of the stadium populated by visiting supporters.

During the suspension of play Spartak went to the end of the ground occupied by their fans and seemed to remonstrate with them.

Last week Russia were awarded the World Cup ahead of England by FIFA's executive committee.

Their critics had said hooliganism and racism were still prevalent within the Russian game.

Local news agency SITA reported that some 400 Spartak supporters attended Wednesday's match.

football fans clash: 250 injured

Around 250 people including 30 police were injured on Friday when an iron railing collapsed during unrest at a football stadium in Amman after a match between two local teams, police said.

"After the fixture between Al-Wehdat and Al-Feisali, as fans were heading out a group of people outside the stadium started to throw stones at those who were inside," a police spokesman told AFP.

"The fans panicked, and in the stampede to get out the iron fence fell over, injuring 250 people, including 30 policemen. There were no reported deaths."

An eyewitness told AFP: "The gendarmes intervened violently when some people threw stones at the stadium. They started to beat people left and right. Also some of the angry fans threw stones at cars and shops outside the stadium."

Warning to Plymouth Argyle and Exeter City football fans - 11/12/2010

Source : BBC NEWS

About 220 police officers are to be on duty in Plymouth to prevent trouble during the football derby between Plymouth Argyle and Exeter City.

Trouble broke out at a match on 9 November - the first time the clubs had played each other for eight years.

Twenty-two people have been arrested so far in connection with the violence, which saw trouble inside and outside Home Park and fireworks on the pitch.

Police said anyone who was intent on disruption would be dealt with firmly.

Club co-operation

Last month, there were 60 Devon and Cornwall officers at Plymouth's Home Park ground.

There had been some disturbances during the Johnstone's Paint Trophy clash, which Exeter won 2-1, but more trouble broke out at the end of the game.

The force was criticised for not anticipating the trouble that happened in and outside the stadium.

At the time, police said their resources were used effectively and blamed a minority of fans.

Police said they had been working closely with the club for a number of weeks to ensure supporters could enjoy the League One match safely.

Supt John Green, of Devon and Cornwall Police, said: "I hope this is a football match that is remembered for all the right reasons.

"But if we are faced with a minority who are intent on disruption then they will be dealt with quickly and firmly."

Police from the football intelligence unit are continuing to review CCTV and broadcast footage of the last match.

Russia : Fans, police 'clash' in St Petersburg at rally over fan’s death - 11/12/2010

Source : RIA Novosti

Football fans protesting the recent death of a Spartak Moscow supporter clashed with riot police in St Petersburg on Saturday, local media report.

Reports say some 2,000 fans gathered in the centre of the city and clashes broke out after police prevented them from marching. Lumps of ice were thrown at police officers and a road was blocked. There have been a number of arrests.

Nationalists and members of the outlawed National Bolshevik Party were reported to be taking part in the clashes, although media say most of the participants are “ordinary fans.”

A police spokesperson denied however that any serious incidents had taken place.

A similar rally in Moscow attended by around 3,000 people has so far passed off without incident, despite police concerns that nationalist groups could hijack the event.

The rallies were in memory of a well-known Spartak Moscow supporter, and member of an organized hooligan group, who was killed during a recent mass brawl in the north of the capital between football fans and internal migrants from Russia’s North Caucasus.

Yegor Sviridov, 28, was killed by four shots from a rubber-bullet pistol. Police have already detained a suspect from the North Caucasus republic of Kabardino-Balkar.

Around 1,000 Spartak fans blocked a busy road in north Moscow earlier in the week to protest Sviridov’s death.

Russia was recently awarded the 2018 World Cup, and while the event is still over seven years away, Saturday’s developments will cause concern over security for traveling fans.

Football fans, police clash in central Moscow - 11/12/2010

Source : Xinhua

More than 2000 football fans protesting the death of a fan clashed with police near Red Square in central Moscow Saturday.

Crowds of fans, who began to gather on the Manezh square earlier Saturday, attempted to break through a police cordon. They threw metal fences, bottles, and flares at police, damaging several streetlamps and a Christmas tree on the square, the Interfax news agency reported.

Russian TV pictures showed policemen and interior forces used special equipment to disperse the angry fans.

The RIA Novosti news agency reported that three people from North Caucasus region were injured after being attacked by football hooligans during the clash.

Some fans also clashed with police in a Moscow metro station, when the police tried to stop them attacking a man of apparently North Caucasian appearance, Interfax reported.

The fans were protesting the death of Yegor Sviridov, a 28-year-old supporter of the Spartak club, who was killed during a mass brawl between football fans by four shots from a rubber-bullet pistol Monday. The police have detained a suspect from the North Caucasus republic of Kabardino-Balkar.

About 1000 Spartak fans blocked a busy road in Moscow Tuesday to protest his death.

Plymouth-Exeter match police make 12 arrests

A major police operation to control fans at the match between Plymouth Argyle and Exeter City has been described as a success by officers.

About 220 officers were on duty at Home Park, Plymouth, on Saturday to prevent a repeat of trouble which broke out between fans at a match in November.

Police said there only 12 arrests made for minor offences.

Officers escorted many Exeter City fans in and out of the stadium as part of the operation.

About 14,300 people attended the League One match, which Plymouth Argyle won 2-0.

Violent clashes

Supt John Green, of Devon and Cornwall Police said: "The staff we deployed did exceptionally well to minimise any opportunities for confrontation.

"The foot cordons, the use of dogs and horses worked, in my view, exceptionally well.

"And to the thousands of people who turned up and behaved in a responsible manner, thank you."

Police said a small number of isolated incidents in the ground were "quickly dealt with" and that about 180 Exeter fans were escorted back to the city's train station.

The 12 arrests were for various alcohol and public order offences, including one man who was arrested for running on to the pitch.

The operation came after violent clashes between fans at last month's cup game between the sides.

Twenty-two people have been arrested so far in connection with the violence at Home Park during the 9 November game.

There had been some disturbances during the Johnstone's Paint Trophy clash. More trouble broke out at the end of the game, both inside and outside Home Park, and fireworks were also thrown on the pitch.

The force was criticised for not anticipating the trouble.
