Police forces form Seguridad Publica (PSP) have arrested 3 people who were part of troubles who occured at the end of this game, opposing arch-rivals. All of them are Porto supporters. They were followed by 5 policemen after they threw bricks at Benfica supporters. It seems no toe-to-toe erupted between both sides but only scuffles opposing fans to police forces.

| United play safety first overreturn to riot city - 01/12/2007
Source: Daily Mail
Manchester United have sent fans an instruction manual on how to avoid trouble in Italy when they face Roma in the Champions League on Tuesday week.
Supporters are warned they risk being ambushed if they walk to the Olympic Stadium or travel on the underground. They are also told to expect to be held in the ground for more than an hour after the whistle to avoid clashes with Roma 'Ultras'.
United's initiative follows disturbing scenes at last season's Champions League game between Roma and United. Baton-wielding police were criticised for heavy-handed behaviour towards visiting fans and both clubs were fined after supporters threw missiles at each other.
Since then, violence in Italian football has become a serious issue. The recent shooting by police of a Lazio fan led to rioting across the country, including near the Olympic Stadium.
Some 2,000 United fans are expected to make the trip. There would have been more, but United have already qualified for the knockout stages.

| Aberdeen Fans' Fury At Madrid Police Attacks - 01/12/2007Source: http://www.dailyrecord.co.uk BRUTAL Madrid riot cops were branded "animals" after they went berserk and laid into innocent Aberdeen fans with their batons. An angry Dons supporter who witnessed the unprovoked police charge said: "They were lashing out at anyone they could reach." One fan was beaten unconscious and spent the night in intensive care. And hours before the police assault, a young Aberdeen fan was gang-raped by a group of locals as she walked back to her hotel in the Spanish capital. Aberdeen FC officials are furious over the police assault on their fans outside Atletico Madrid's Vicente Calderon Stadium before Thursday night's UEFA Cup defeat. The club's security chief, former policeman John Morgan, witnessed the mayhem. He said: "It was disgusting and horrific. I saw a child of about 10 being hit with a baton and women were also struck. "The Spanish officers were kicking into grounded fans. It was a sustained and unprovoked attack." Morgan was himself knocked to the ground as the fans tried to get away from the cops. He said: "We want to know why they felt it necessary to have 300 riot police there in the first place." The wife of goalie Jamie Langfield was also forced to flee the violence. The Dons yesterday made an official protest to the Spanish authorities about the conduct of the police, and the club plan to write to UEFA "as a matter of urgency". Thetrouble outside the ground began after skinheads from the neo-fascist Frente Atletico group of hooligans staged a sneak attack on Aberdeen fans outside a bar. The thugs, their faces hidden behind scarves and balaclavas, hurled flares at the Scots from close range then tipped a bottle bank over and began throwing bottles. Neil McDougall, a former chairman of the Association of Aberdeen Supporters' Clubs, saw Dons fans hit by flares. "It was terrifying to watch," he said. "We could see everything clearly and it was all sparked off by a group of about 20 Spanish supporters. The flares were thrown at Aberdeen fans from less than 10 feet away." The Spanish yobs gave Nazi salutes and made throat-cutting gestures. They fled after the ambush, and the riot cops turned their fury on hundreds of innocent Scots supporters. Neil McDougall said: "The police behaved like animals. They came charging up the street, hitting out at the Aberdeen fans. "They even laid into a man carrying a child of five or six on his shoulders. "I have followed the Dons all over for the last 30 years and I have never seen anything so frightening or sickening." Another supporter, Kevin Bartlett, 24, of Ellon, Aberdeenshire, added: "The police were desperate to get their batons out and hit anyone they could." As the police attack continued, Dons fan Ian Bremner, 38, collapsed unconscious on the pavement under a hail of baton blows. He was rushed to intensive care but had recovered well enough yesterday to be moved to a normal ward. Ian, who lives in Denmark, had not even seen the trouble at the bar. He had just emerged from an underground station when the police charged. Pal Lindsay Bartlett, 45, said: "It was way over the top for the police to charge at us like that. It was completely unprovoked. "One minute we were walking towards the stadium and the next the police were coming at us with batons. "My nephew and I got separated from Ian and we didn't know what happened to him until the next morning. "We found out from the consulate that he was in hospital. He was in a pretty bad way." Lindsay, of Old Aberdeen, added: "The police acted like animals. Action should be taken against the Spanish authorities." Jamie Langfield's wife Louise was on the way to the ground with a group of friends when the cops charged. The group were forced to jump into a taxi to escape. Langfield said last night: "I was relieved to learn she got away safely but it's disappointing that some of our fans have been hurt." John Morgan was caught up in the chaos and was knocked over as the fans fled. His assistant Gordon Ritchie also ended up on the pavement, as did undercover antihooliganism officers from Grampian Police who were in Spain to mingle with the crowd. Dons director Duncan Fraser also witnessed the police onslaught. He and Morgan stayed on in Spain after the rest of the Aberdeen party flew home to lodge protests with the police and local officials. Fraser said: "We are not happy with the way the fans were treated. "It appears they have been victims of an indiscriminate and sustained attack by the Spanish police. We will carry out a thorough investigation." An Aberdeen FC spokesman said Morgan and Ritchie were working closely with the British Consulate in Madrid and Grampian Police. He added: "We are still in the process of documenting everything that occurred - in particular, the way some of our fans were treated outside the stadium. "As far as we can ascertain, Ian Bremner is the only supporter to have been hospitalised as a result of trouble. "Thankfully, he is now out of intensive care and is on the mend." Reports in Spain said 17 people were hurt before the match and police made 11 arrests. The Dons spokesman said: "Significantly, there are no reports of any Aberdeen fans being arrested. We will be submitting a detailed report to UEFA over the course of the next few days." A spokesman for First Minister Alex Salmond said he was concerned about what had happened and was awaiting full details. Around 6000 Dons fans travelled to Madrid but the club were only given 3000 tickets. The Dons were told at a UEFA meeting on Thursday that the game was a sellout, but there were thousands of empty seats inside the stadium at kick-off. Mum of two Debs Ironside, of Kingswells near Aberdeen, suffered a broken arm, a gash to her head and severe bruising when she fell down steps inside the ground. As well as the violence before the match, Aberdeen are deeply concerned about the gang-rape of one of their fans. The young woman was grabbed by a group of local men in the early hours of Thursday as she returned to her hotel in Madrid's trendy Puerto del Sol district. The victim, in her 20s, had become separated from her friends minutes before the assault. She managed to stagger back to her hotel after the rape and raise the alarm. Spanish detectives have taken a statement from the woman and she has been examined by doctors. A spokesman for the British Consulate said: "We can confirm we have assisted a Scottish woman in connection with an alleged gang rape in the city centre."

| United fans on Roma alert - 02/12/2007
Source : Manchester Evening News
MANCHESTER United fans travelling to Italy for next week's Champions League clash with AS Roma have been warned of a "real danger of being attacked" by hooligans.
The warning from the British Embassy in Rome has been published in a letter from the Old Trafford club sent to the 12,000 supporters expected to travel to the game.
Last year two matches between the clubs were marred by violence and there are fears some United followers may seek revenge.
Twenty supporters, including 18 United fans, needed hospital treatment following clashes on the terraces of the Olympic Stadium and outside the ground when the teams met in Rome last year.
And 21 people, including 14 United supporters, were arrested outside Old Trafford as violence flared again before the return leg.
One of the fans attacked in Rome, Carly Lyes, 23, had her camera snatched by a riot officer as she tried to record the violent scenes. She was then beaten by baton-wielding police as she tried to retrieve it.
Carly, from Rusholme, has now received an apology from the Italian team's star player Francesco Totti.
Last year United sent out a similar letter before the game in Rome, as it does for every away game in Europe, which drew criticism from the Italian authorities for the way it portrayed the city as dangerous and crime ridden.
This year United have issued a similar letter but this time it makes clear the warning is from the British Embassy in Rome, not the club.
The letter, also posted on the club's website, says: "The British Embassy in Rome has told us that fans of other English clubs who have made their way independently to the stadium have often reported problems with getting back to the city centre after the game and there is a real danger of being attacked by the Ultra fans of AS Roma. The club realises that fans travelling independently may not wish to give up that independence but we ask you to consider your own safety and welfare as being of paramount importance."
In further information provided to the club by the embassy, fans are urged not to take Metro trains to Piazza Flaminio or to attempt to use the Pont Duca D'Aosta bridge as both are habitually used by Ultras, Italian hooligans or hardcore fans.
In one section headed "crime", fans are told crime is generally low but they are warned about petty crime in city centre areas. Supporters should look out for pick-pockets and bag-snatchers, it says. Cars are targets for robbers and people should be wary about offers of help for a flat tyre, it says, as they are often punctured deliberately.
Thieves sometimes rob sleeping passengers on night trains and people should be vigilant, says the letter. Counterfeit Euros are in circulation and people are asked to be on the look-out for fakes.
However, the letter ends on a positive note, telling fans "Rome is one of the most beautiful cities in the world and officials of AS Roma have been friendly and helpful in their dealings with us. We want you to enjoy your visit and enjoy the game".

AEK go top after crowd trouble interrupts game
AEK Athens went three points clear at the top of the Greek championship on Sunday after crowd trouble interrupted their 1-0 win at Aris. The trouble in Thessaloniki began late in the first half when a flare fired from the crowd almost hit AEK central defender Traianos Dellas. Other flares followed, leading the referee to insist on the small number of AEK fans, the source of the flares, leaving the ground before the second half could get underway. "We have all agreed to the AEK section of the ground being cleared as there is a danger of someone being injured," Aris president Lambros Skordas told reporters. The AEK fans were unhappy to depart and an 85-minute halftime ensued. According to the state broadcaster, two AEK supporters were arrested as they made their exit.

| Thug banned for match attack - 02/12/2007
Source : Suffolk Evening Star
A FOOTBALL thug has been banned from matches for three years after punching fellow Wolves fans during his team's 3-0 demolition by Ipswich at Portman Road.
Wolverhampton Wanderers' fan Gareth Evans, pleaded guilty to punching three members of the same family after a dispute at Ipswich's home game against the midlands team on October 27.
Ipswich romped to an easy victory in the game with goals from Alan Lee, Pablo Counago and Danny Haynes.
District Judge David Cooper, sitting at South East Suffolk Magistrates' Court, said 30-year-old Evans was sitting behind Dennis Dyke and his sons Andrew and Adam in the away stand at Portman Road when banter began about the distance a shot was taken from.
Judge Cooper said: “A comment was made by someone about a player taking a shot from 40 yards and the Dyke family thought it was Evans.
“The shot was then taken from 24 yards and Evans made a comment about it to the family in front.”
The court heard that Evans, who admitted having drunk three pints of beer, had misunderstood the conversation and had taken offence to something Adam had said so he struck him from behind.
Evans then punched Adam's brother in the mouth and their father on the nose before being arrested.
Mark Holt, mitigating against the three charges of common assault, said Evans had become “frustrated” and had pushed forward at the men and then become confused when his glasses were knocked off.
He said Evans, of Cotswold Road, High Green, Staffordshire was a TNT delivery driver of previous good character who was saving to buy a house with his partner and their young daughter.
Judge Cooper banned Evans from attending any regulated football match for three years and fined him £750. He was also told to pay each of the men £100 compensation and £80 towards legal costs.
Evans, who holds a Wolves' season ticket said he would be heartbroken not to follow his team for three years.
Judge Cooper said: “It all seems deeply unfortunate to me that you have a dispute with your own supporters about a comment.”
He said Evans could appeal against the football ban order after two years and was likely to have the three year minimum ban reduced to two years if he did this.

| Gang rapes Aberdeen supporter in Madrid as police and rival fans clash - 01/12/2007
source: http://thescotsman.scotsman.com
A FEMALE supporter of Aberdeen Football Club was gang-raped and at least 17 other fans were injured in violent scenes linked to a UEFA Cup match in Spain.
Dozens of Scots were caught up in running battles with Atletico Madrid supporters and riot police.
The female victim, who is understood to be in her late twenties, was reportedly raped by a group of Spanish men as she made her way back to the city-centre hotel where she had been staying. She is believed to have become separated from friends minutes before the attack on Wednesday, the night before the European fixture.
A spokesman for the British Consulate confirmed they had assisted a Scottish woman in connection with an alleged gang rape.
But while Scottish fans have accused Spanish police of heavyhanded tactics, Grampian Police believe known troublemakers who associate themselves with the Pittodrie club travelled to the game with the intention of causing violence.
However, there were no reports of any arrests amongst the Aberdeen supporters.
An estimated 6,000 Aberdeen fans are believed to have made the trip, with only 3,000 tickets officially allocated.
At least one fan, Ian Bremner, a father of two, was taken to hospital during clashes in the Spanish capital.
Friends of the 38-year-old project manager, originally from Buckie, Moray, who now works in Denmark, claimed yesterday he was repeatedly struck over the head by police armed with batons as he made his way to Vicente Calderón stadium for the game.
Lindsay Bartlet, 45, who was with Mr Bremner at the time, said: "It was way over the top for the police to charge at us like that; it was completely unprovoked."
It is understood Mr Bremner was due to be discharged from the Clinico San Carlos Madrid Hospital last night.
John Morgan, Aberdeen FC's head of security, said he witnessed a child of about ten being hit with a baton, and also saw women being struck.
Superintendent Adrian Watson, of Grampian Police, said: "There was a clash between fans and the Spanish police, but the trouble was limited to a small number of troublemakers. This small group travelled to Madrid with the intention of causing trouble."
Four Grampian Police officers were in Madrid to assist the Spanish police. Mr Watson said they were now making efforts to obtain CCTV footage of the violence.
Dave Macdermid, a spokesman for Aberdeen FC, said the club was to write to Uefa.
He said: "There is no doubt there were problems with violence, but it was limited to a small number of people.
"Most of the fans behaved impeccably and I would like to thank them for that. Unfortunately, there was a small number that did not and that is where the violence stemmed from."
The Spanish media reported yesterday that at least 17 people had suffered injuries during the trouble, which saw riot police try to control the crowd after flares, bottles and other objects were thrown.

One Aberdeen supporter told of fights in the stand and violent clashes outside of the ground - 01/12/07

STAIN ON THE SOUL OF FOOTBALL
FOOTBALL hooliganism, which cast a dark shadow on the game during the 1970s and 1980s, has made an unwelcome return in recent years.
In March, two dozen casuals wearing the colours of Aberdeen and Celtic were arrested after scores of rival fans waged a battle in the car park of a public house.
The men clashed outside the Gordon Hotel on the outskirts of Aberdeen.
During the casuals' heyday, the gangs had their own code of conduct, outlawing attacks on outnumbered splinter groups or so-called innocent supporters. However, the resultant battles were often brutal. Aberdeen Soccer Casuals is among the notorious gangs linked with the club. The group has followed the Pittodrie club for more than 20 years and has been involved in serious disorder all over Europe.
It has links with English gangs such as Tottenham's N17s and the Yiddos, and Leeds United's Service Crew.

| Serbian government to take tougher stance on hooligans - 03/12/2007Source : Reuters Authorities in Serbia are set to take drastic measures against soccer violence after a policeman was seriously injured during a first division match on Sunday, the sports ministry said. The policeman, wearing plain clothes, was attacked by fans during Red Star Belgrade's match with Hajduk Kula and fired shots into the air in self-defence as they battered him with burning torches and broken seats. His condition is stable after he was treated for burns, cuts and bruises in a nearby hospital. "The incident should prove a turning point in tackling the problem and requires a consistent implementation of the new anti-violence law," sports and youth minister Snezana Samardzic-Markovic told Reuters on Monday. "Amendments to the anti-violence law at sports events have enraged the hooligans because they envisage stricter punishment for the offenders," she said. "What we need is a united front including clubs, sports bodies, players and state institutions to condemn the violence and fans to distance themselves from hooligans." "While educational measures are desirable, repressive action is necessary and police have no choice but to act swiftly and decisively while the justice ministry should do the same." The law envisages up to 10 years' imprisonment for the offenders. Earlier on Monday, the Serbian Football Association said it needed the government's help to crack down on violence. "The hooliganism has exceeded the powers of the Football Association to act on its own and punish the culprits, therefore we extend our full support to the state authorities in taking appropriate measures," it said. "We regret that efforts by the Football Association to implement the anti-violence law through educational meetings with fans and police have failed to bear fruit." | |

| AEK go top in spite of trouble - 02/12/2007
Source: http://www.sportingreece.com
Crowd trouble flared up for the first time this season as AEK beat Aris 1-0 in Thessaloniki to go clear at the top of the Super League on Sunday.
The problem was, literally, flares believe to have been fired from a mechanical launcher.
One flare reportedly went clear out of the ground while another shortly before half-time landed within a metre of the feet of AEK central defender Traianos Dellas.
At half-time, the referee insisted on the removal of the small band of AEK fans from the ground, a decision which apparently was taken in deliberation with AEK president Demis Nikolaidis.
"We have all agreed that the AEK section of the ground being cleared as there is a danger of someone being injured. There was also the possibility that if it continued that AEK would lose points and none of us wanted to see that," said Aris president Lambros Skordas.
The AEK fans were less happy to leave the ground and the half-tie break stretched to 85 minutes before the game was able to continue. According to Net, the state broadcaster, two AEK fans were arrested as they made their way out of the ground.
It was the AEK fans, however, who ultimately had most to cheer as an 82 minute own goal from Aris' central defender Ronaldo gave AEK three points they needed to go clear at the top of the table.

Ancash were leading 2-1 when Viafara, who had scored their second goal, used his buttocks to bring a pass under control. This infuriated Universitario players who interpreted it as a mockery of their team.
Media reports said that the entire Universitario team chased Viafara, sparking a brawl on the pitch.
Fighting brought out in the stands and referee Percy Rojas abandoned the match when fans ran onto the field. There was also trouble in the streets outside, reports said.
“If they had sent off Viafara none of this would have happened,” said Universitario captain Mayer Candelo.

| Hooliganism in Costa Rica, Riot as Alajuelense Play Municipal - 01/12/2007Source : Press Turnstiles, barrels, chairs — all hurled by fans onto the pitch over a tall gate as all hell broke loose when Costa Rica’s Alajuelense took on Guatemala’s Municipal in the UNCAF (Central American) Cup’s third place consolation game at the Morena Soto stadium. Hexagonal Blog described the scene live last Tuesday: The players of both teams, as well as the referees, ran toward the field entrance located behind one of the goals — in the section where the disturbances are taking place. They’re running under heavy guard by the riot cops. As I was writing that previous sentence, another unit of riot police charged through the section where most of the disturbances were taking place, and they seem to have taken control. You can see images of injured police officers being carried away, and of innocent fans, many holding small children, looking on in amazement and horror. The situation seems to be out of control. I’m listening to the Spanish-language commentator on Gol TV right now (it’s the Costa Rican feed actually), and it seems that Alajuelense’s barras only arrived at the match during the second half, and they devoted their time to making chants and threats against the directors of the club. | |
