| Red Star Belgrade officials released from custody - 26/12/2007
Source: Reuters
Three Red Star Belgrade officials and a match delegate arrested following a riot earlier this month were released from custody on Tuesday pending further investigation, the club's legal representative said. "They have been released after all the witnesses in the case have been heard in the preliminary stage of the investigation," Red Star's lawyer Dragan Ninkovic told Reuters. "The legal grounds for their detention have ceased to exist," he added, "they can't repeat the offence during the ongoing winter break in the league and the club has also been penalised. "The inquest will continue and it's now up to the prosecutor to press on with the case or drop the charges." Red Star's general secretary Zoran Damjanovic, stadium manager Miodrag Corovic, security chief Novica Mijuskovic and match delegate Rade Popovic were arrested after a policeman was seriously injured in their home game with Hajduk Kula. They were charged with causing a "a general state of danger" for failing to prevent the riot during which fans battered the police officer with burning flares, forcing him to fire shots into the air in self-defence. The Serbian champions have been fined and ordered to play three home matches behind closed doors. Serbian soccer has been rife with violence in recent years and Partizan were kicked out of the UEFA Cup in August after their fans started trouble at Bosnian rivals Zrinjski Mostar in the first qualifying round.

| Police praise for football fans - 27/12/2007
Source : Hartlepool Today
FOOTBALL fans have been commended for their good behaviour at a major match over Christmas. Hartlepool United played Leeds United at Victoria Park yesterday and the match passed without any major incidents.
Cleveland Police made two arrests in the town centre and both were Pools supporters.
The League One match, which ended in a 1-1 draw, was heavily policed and a sell-out crowd of 7,784 fans watched the action unfold.
More than 900 Leeds United fans travelled from Yorkshire for the match.
There was a heavy police presence at the match and both sets of fans were commended for their good behaviour. Acting Inspector Neil Armstrong, of Cleveland Police, said: "It was a successful police operation and both sets of fans should be congratulated for their good behaviour.
"It was a normal police operation in terms of the procedures in place and there were only two arrests. Both were Hartlepool United fans and were arrested outside the ground in the town centre for public order offences."
Inspector Martin Cook, of Hartlepool Police, said: "The football match was quiet and all the officers were stood down by 3pm. Everybody was well behaved both inside and outside the ground."

| POLICE PREPARE TO KEEP ACTION ON THE PITCH - 28/12/2007
Source : South Wales Evening Post
Police are bracing themselves for the arrival of thousands of Leeds United football fans in Swansea tomorrow. The top-of-the-table League One sell-out at the Liberty Stadium is likely to be a passionate affair on the pitch - and police have said they are mounting a major public safety operation to ensure emotions do not spill over into violence among rival supporters.
Superintendent Julian Williams, who is in charge of policing the match, said he was working closely with both clubs and with British Transport Police.
"We have been involved in a significant amount of planning with the clubs for this fixture," he said.
"To cope with the number of people attending, we have a substantial number of resources working on the day.
"This is a family event which will attract a large number of people, and the policing on this day will be there to assist and ensure that the event runs safely for all concerned."
Around 2,800 Leeds United supporters are expected to make the journey.
Leeds have been plagued by fan violence this season - at an away game in Carlisle last month brawls broke out in town centre pubs before and after the match, while a visit by Millwall to Leeds saw the Londoners' buses attacked.
There are also concerns that some Cardiff hooligans may try to target the Swansea game.
Leeds and Cardiff have had a troubled history - the Bluebirds' victory over Leeds in an FA Cup tie in 2002 was blighted by violence, missile throwing and a pitch invasion.
Cardiff were subsequently fined £20,000 by the Football Association of Wales over the trouble, and there are fears that Cardiff fans may be planning to travel to Swansea to resume hostilities.
However, Mr Williams said the police did not have any specific intelligence that troublemakers from the capital were coming west. Police will be out in force on the day, with mounted officers and dog handlers helping to keep the peace.
Officers known as "spotters", from both South Wales and West Yorkshire Police, will be used to identify potential troublemakers in the crowd.
And Mr Williams said fans outside the ground would be filmed by intelligence officers gathering evidence in case trouble does kick off.
The match is a sell-out, with around 19,500 fans expected in the ground, and Swans officials are stressing that no tickets will be available to buy at the gate.
They have also ensured there is segregation in the stadium.
"This is a big game for Swansea," said Mr Williams.
"We are not expecting trouble and we hope everything goes smoothly.
"We will be there to ensure everyone's safety.
"However, people should be warned that if they attend to engage in disorder, they will be dealt with firmly."

| Bristol City : Football fan banned after assault - 28/12/2007
Source: BBC
A six-year football banning order has been issued against a 40-year-old Bristol City fan jailed for assaulting another supporter.
Heath Williams, of Bathwell Road, Bristol, caused trouble at a home match against Charlton Athletic last month.
He was jailed for four months for common assault, being drunk in a sports ground and possessing a Class C drug.
Police said the banning order was the longest that had been imposed in the Avon and Somerset police force area.
'Powerful message'
Magistrates heard that Williams was arrested and charged after he was found drunk in the stand.
He had forced an elderly City fan out of his way, leaving him with cuts to his face.
The banning order prevents him from attending any matches at home or abroad for the next six years.
Football intelligence desk officer Roger Thayer said: "[This] will send out a powerful message to those intent on causing problems at football matches that this behaviour will simply not be tolerated."
There are currently 45 football banning orders in force in the Avon and Somerset Constabulary area.

| Football fan must stay in prison - 28/12/2007
Source: http://www.thisisthenortheast.co.uk
A FOOTBALL fan from the region who was jailed for fighting with rival supporters in Rome will spend at least three months in an Italian prison.
Manchester United fan Richard Wimmer, 39, of North Yorkshire, was jailed for fighting with AS Roma supporters.
The brawl came as United fans clashed with those of AS Roma before a Champions League match on December 12.
Wimmer, of South Parade, Northallerton, was one of four fans from England to be arrested.
Kyle Dillon, 23, Nicholas Lukas, 18, and Michael Burke, 35, were arrested with him before the match, which ended 1-1. They were charged with assault and resisting arrest by the Italian police.
Wimmer and Dillon were both jailed for two years and six months, while Burke and Lukas were sentenced to two years and five months.
An appeal hearing was held this week, but the four will remain in prison until a new trial date is set.
A Foreign Office spokesman said: "They are being held in jail in Italy and have not been sent back to the UK. There was an appeal on Monday and their lawyer is still going forward with the case. The case could still take two to three months before a date is set for another trial."
The four were part of a group of fans who were being escorted to AS Roma's Stadio Olimpico.
They are thought to have joined a 60-strong gang of Manchester United fans who broke away from the main group.
They then ran into rival AS Roma fans close to the Duca d'Aosta bridge, where fighting broke out.
Greater Manchester Police hooligan spotters identified the four to Italian officers for their part in the fighting.
A police spokesman said they had not been not subject to any football banning orders.
Manchester police Superintendent John Graves said: "The majority of people travelling are genuine football fans who just want to have a good night."
He warned fans at future matches: "When travelling to the stadium, use the official transport provided and be mindful of your personal safety."
Michael Heaton, branch secretary of the Harrogate and District Manchester United Supporters' Club, said: "I have been all over the world following Manchester United for over 50 years and I'm not a hooligan.
"But some of the things you have to put up with when you travel abroad are disgraceful.
"There are places to avoid and I would rather you could just go to a match and be able to watch it safely."

| Extra police patrols for match - 29/12/2007
Source : News & Star
EXTRA police will be on patrol as Carlisle United take on Hartlepool in a New Year’s Day football match in the city.
Officers have issued a warning to would-be hooligans ahead of the Bank Holiday game, warning they could be banned from soccer grounds if they cause trouble.
Chief Inspector Julie McFee also urged parents to make sure they knew where their children were and to check they were not hanging around Brunton Park or Botchergate.
The warning comes after 21 people were arrested as trouble flared before and after United’s game against Leeds in Carlisle on November 3.
Officers were also forced to disperse teenagers who refused to move from Botchergate and Court Square after a match against Millwall a month before.
More than 20 yobs were dealt with by the courts after a previous game against Hartlepool in Carlisle in 2002, when violence broke out between rival supporters.
Police said the aim of the added officer numbers was to “maximise the safety of fans – both home and away” and to make sure the match was safe for everyone.
They added that they would arrest, prosecute and aim to secure banning orders against any fans caught behaving violently or causing disorder.
A number of bans were handed out following the Leeds game, with hooligans being barred from football grounds across the UK.
Chief Insp McFee added: “People should be able to take kids to a football game without having to worry about the behaviour of other fans.
“So we have a zero tolerance approach to football disorder and the follow-on to that is the football banning order.
“An influx of supporters is part and parcel of having a successful football team in Carlisle.
“We will tackle these issues as usual with a highly visible police presence, with officers working proactively to tackle disorder before it becomes a problem.”
A large crowd is expected for the New Year’s Day game, which will see United attempt to strengthen their promotion push.
Chief Insp McFee added: “I would appeal to fans from both sides to respect each other at the start of the new year.
“They should enjoy the match in the spirit that it is meant – without anti-social behaviour.
“I would also appeal to parents living in Carlisle to know where their children are during the match.
“It is up to them to ensure that their children do not hang around Brunton Park and Botchergate causing problems and behaving anti-socially.”
The game has an early kick-off time of 1pm.

| Suspected Hooligans Beat 2 Sudanese - 23/12/2007
Source : Associated Press
A group of suspected soccer hooligans racially abused and beat up two Sudanese men and a German who tried to intervene on their behalf, police and prosecutors in the eastern city of Dresden said Sunday.
According to police, several men among the group of 10 to 15 suspected hooligans began taunting the Sudanese men at a nightclub in downtown Dresden, prompting club security guards to intervene.
The pair, both 21, then decided to leave and were followed by the group, a police statement said. A man who tried to break up the fight was also lightly injured, it said.
Germany's former communist east has seen a recent spike in racist attacks. Some politicians, economists and others have suggested a link between the violence and frustrations over unemployment that has risen as high as 20 percent and a lack of prospects for young people.

Leeds United fans bricked
LEEDS United players and fans had to run a gauntlet of hate following the club's game at Swansea City at the weekend.
Coaches taking United supporters away from the Welsh side's Liberty Stadium on Saturday came under fire from bricks and other missiles hurled by local yobs.
Windows in at least two of the vehicles were smashed, showering passengers - including women and children - with glass.
An unconfirmed report today said United's team bus had also been targeted by Swansea troublemakers.
One fan at the game claimed to have seen a gang of hooligans pulling the fire door open at the back of the coach.
He said: "It looked as though the players were having to physically stop them from climbing on board."
Police made a total of six arrests for public order offences during the League One match, which Swansea won 3-2.
The top-of-the-table clash drew a 19,000 sell-out crowd, which included around 2,800 United fans.
A major security operation was mounted in and around the ground to try to prevent any repeat of the violence which has marred other Leeds games this season.
A total of 21 arrests were made at United's away match against Carlisle on November 3.
The previous weekend Millwall hooligans had wrecked buses ferrying them from Leeds city centre to United's Elland Road ground.

Arrests mar big match victory for Swans
TROUBLE flared at yesterday’s football match between Swansea and Leeds when a group of home fans tried to force their way onto the visiting team’s coach.
One onlooker described the scenes as he left the Liberty Stadium after the match, which saw Swansea rise to the top of League One with a 3-2 victory.
“I was about to drive off when I saw a gang of Swans fans pulling the fire door open at the back of the Leeds’ team’s coach, and it looked as through the players were having to physically stop them from climbing on board,” he said.
“It had all kicked off outside the King’s Arms Tavern before the game too,” he added.
South Wales Police confirmed that they had made six arrests for public order offences during the game, four of which were Swansea fans.
“A couple of the away coaches were also damaged near the ground after some had bottles and things thrown at them,” said Insp Colin Wooldridge.

| FC Sachsen Leipzig fans'party troubled by hooligans - 28/12/2007
Source : AFP
Last Friday, a party organized by Sachsen Leipzig's supporters has been troubled by some 25 hooligans. Three players were with those fans in the "Kartoffelsack" restaurant when the hooligans arrived with baseball bats.
On the last 08/12, a party set up by the same fans was already attacked by some 40 hooligans, probably Lokomotiv Leipzig's fans. Some people were injured and they caused about 50,000€ of damages.
This time, a 42-years-old fan has been sent to the hospital. Enrico Köckeritz, Sachsen Leipzig's player, said: "I feared for my life". According to the Sachsen's fans, the hooligans were wearing FC Lokomotiv Leipzig's scarves and singing Loko's songs.

| Beach, Sun, Cocktails and... Hooligans - 04/12/2007Source : www.denofinformation.blogspot.com/ Hooligans will not take part in the EURO2008, instead the EU planned something else for them. I talked to a person in this scene, to see what he thinks about this plan. Austria and Switzerland are preparing for the football tournament of the year. Ahead of the EURO2008, Franco Frattini the European Commissioner for Security, came up with the idea to work together with the supporters in order to prevent violent incidents in the future. The special plan would be to send all the hooligans on holiday or on team building activities during the EURO2008 and the upcoming major footballing events. The media are warming up. It is trendy to blame other countries for causing the hooligan problems, instead of looking at their own one. During the World Cup in Germany, the local press pointed the fingers at the violent Polish fans. This time around it is the Austrian press, who points at two, Poland and Croatia. Police will work together with colleagues from Germany, Poland, and other qualified football nations, to prevent violence. Co-operation amongst different institutions dealing with this problems will be inevitable. "No single agency can tackle the problem alone" says Frattini. Therefore it is time to to work with...the hooligans. "No, Thanks!" says a hooligan from the scene. "It will not make us disappear." The hooligan mentality in most cases relies on opposing the establishment and "hools dont care about money and their entire way of life is exactly against this money buying and political thing". Bribing them away from their favourite sport will not be very popular. The Ultras mentality was always to "create atmospehere in the stadiums", with their different choreographies and the sea of flares, for every game. Politicians in many countries banned flares and other pyrotechnical devices from stadiums, because of their danger to mass events. This did not stop, but only heated up the tensions. The "trouble-makers with criminal backgrounds" as Frattini says, are not prepared to co-operate. "First, he needs to change his mentality towards us". "Lighting a flare is not crminial. Calling us criminal will not help, and its just sad. They dont really wanna face the truth." the hooligan says. Hooligans and Ultras are not prepared to be bribed, by the establishment they oppose, into leaving their beloved activity behind. What Frattini is wanting to establish is a surreal relationship between Ultras and the government which the Ultras strictly oppose. The main purpose of existence for Ultras is football, and their love for their team. It takes more to understand the mentality and the culture of such groups. Vacation for Ultras and Hooligans is not an option, it will not work, and therefore is just a waste of public funds by the European government. "We will be there and ever present as always, as nobody would expect." "No one is able to understand. No one likes us and we don't care", he says. SK Rapid Wien v Austria Wien | |

| Serbia Finally Decides To Get Tough With Football Violence - 05/12/2007Source : Yhefootie.com The Serbian Football association has promised the extremely patient country leaders that they are ready to get tough on prosecuting violent behaviour at football games. Serbia has been a hotbed of football violence, many of which have led to deaths. Policemen who are charged to break up the violence that erupts after a game, will usually put his life on the line. One officer was treated for burns when a rioter tried to set him on fire with a flare. The country has laws that can prosecute violent acts at soccer games with a maximum of ten years sentencing. The problem, is that in the past the football association has been reluctant to press charges. They promise that that will change. We’ll see. | |
