| Top Dutch clashes postponed due to police action - 15/12/2007
Source: Reuters
Sunday's clash between Dutch league leaders Ajax Amsterdam and PSV Eindhoven has been postponed after a Dutch court allowed police to stage a strike this weekend.
Amsterdam mayor Job Cohen told Dutch radio on Saturday the absence of police would create unacceptable risks for public security.
"We simply can not guarantee that all will go well," Cohen said.
Third-placed Feyenoord's game with AZ Alkmaar has also been postponed.
Ajax top the standings with 31 points after 14 matches, one point ahead of PSV with Feyenoord a further point behind.

| Referee cleared over match clash - 17/12/2007Source : BBC news Referee Brendan Doherty was cleared of the charges An off-duty football referee has been cleared of being involved in fighting before a Champions League match between Manchester United and AS Roma. Brendan Doherty, 44, of Thruxton Drive, Northampton, denied committing a public order offence outside the Old Trafford ground on 10 April. The judge at Trafford Magistrates' Court said there was not sufficient evidence to identify Mr Doherty. Police officers had to separate rival fans outside the football ground. The court heard that a man fitting Mr Doherty's description had been seen "orchestrating" a group of youths by beckoning them towards an outbreak of violence on Sir Matt Busby Way, near the stadium. It followed violence between the two sets of fans at the first leg of the quarter final held in Rome. Giving evidence, Pc Ian Hunt told the court he was "100% certain" that the person he had seen was Mr Doherty. But Judge Tim Devas said Mr Doherty - a non-league referee with Northamptonshire FA - had no case to answer. He had pleaded not guilty on 25 April. Judge Devas said: "The identification evidence in this case is not very good. "The evidence I have heard is on clothing and nothing else. The officer concedes that other people with similar clothing would have been in the vicinity. "I have never been given a proper description." A 16-year-old boy was also found to have no case to answer in relation to a separate public order offence on the same evening. | |

| Glasgow Rangers - Lyon - 12/12/2007
Source: mail
1500 Lyon's fans in Glasgow for this game, including about 40 hools. After having crossed the city center's pubs, some 20 of them joined a pub very close from Ibrox Park... After the usual provocations, Lyon lads began with songs, insultes and punches! The Scots (fans and hools), even if they were more numerous and not that young, were very surprised and reacted slightly... Lyon Lads decided to leave the pub when the staff called the police. Another fight occured a bit later next to the underground station, provocked one more time by the french fans!! The cops arrived then and identified some of our guys (a french would arrested and released at the end of the game). Nothing special after the game, despite the final result (Rangers 0-3 Lyon). Lyon on Tour (Chelsea next...?) !!

| Policeman attacked by Red Star hooligans returns home - 19/12/2007
Source: Tanjug A police officer, attacked by Red Star fans during a match 2 weeks ago, has been discharged from hospital.
Nebojša Trajković is still coming to specialists for check-ups, Director of the Plastic Surgery and Burns Clinic at the Military Medical Institute (VMA) Marjan Novaković told Tanjug.
Trajković sustained severe injuries in the attack – fractured ribs and skull, as well as first and second-degree burns – during a match between Red Star and Hajduk Kula on December 2.
Hooligans attacked him and beat him with broken seats and firecrackers, and, at one point, the police officer fired a warning shot into the air. An investigation against a number of people was launched following the attack, and the culprits were remanded in custody for 30 days.

| Manchester United fans jailed in Italy - 21/12/2007Source : Telegraph.co.uk Four Manchester United fans will be spending Christmas in an Italian prison after they were jailed in Rome today for their part in a fight with rival football supporters. A British Embassy spokesman in Rome said that Kyle Dillon, 23, and Richard Wimmer, 39, had both been sentenced to two years and six months in prison after facing charges of assault and resisting arrest. Nicholas Lucas, 18, and Michael Burk, 35, were both jailed for two years and five months, he said. The four men were arrested on December 12 after fighting with AS Roma fans before the Champions League match in the Italian capital. The men were arrested during violent fighting between United and Roma fans on the Duke D'Aosta bridge outside Roma's Olympic Stadium. Security arrangements for last night were tight and included 60 United stewards and a total ban on the sale of alcohol throughout the city in the afternoon. Police helicopters also circled the stadium in an attempt to isolate trouble spots. | |

| Men In Black origins in Brick Lane violence - 22/12/2007Source : The reference by an Italian judge to the fact that Manchester United hooligans visiting Rome were dressed menacingly all in black will come as no surprise to those who have closely watched the club's violent fringe. For almost 20 years United have been dogged by a shadowy organisation of hard-core troublemakers, the self-styled Men in Black. Their exploits even appeared in two books written by Tony O'Neill, who was known as 'The General' during his three decades as a senior member, and later ringleader, of one of Manchester's most feared hooligan 'firms'. The name Men in Black originates from a clash between a crowd of die-hard West Ham and Manchester United fans in Brick Lane, London, after a league game in 1989. Despite being outnumbered, the thugs from Manchester overcame their rivals, after which one of the bloodied members adopted their nickname, inspired by the fact that the majority of their East End assailants wore dark hats and clothing. Unlike other gangs, who long ago abandoned team colours in favour of designer clothing to avoid detection by the police, the Men in Black flaunt their sinister uniform. Considered older, more resilient and better organised than the numerous other hooligan firms around the country, many of their older members are still taking part in 'meets', despite some having more than 30 years of banning orders. O'Neill differentiates the Men in Black from other football firms by their mindset. "The Men in Black put themselves in situations most other people wouldn't," he said yesterday. "We went in there with a 'whatever happens, happens' attitude. We put ourselves on offer. That's what it's supposed to be about." Although the face of football hooliganism has changed since the 1970s and 1980s, when groups of hooligans would tour the country in converted minibuses nicknamed 'war wagons', a younger generation has emerged eager to forge their own reputation on the back of the Men in Black legend. Their reputation for never having lost a fight precedes them. The group can boast of infiltrating the main stand at Anfield, and 15 black-clad 'ultras' invaded the pitch during a reserve team game in 2006. Not even David Beckham has escaped; he was barracked by members of the group at Budapest airport in 2002. A Greater Manchester Police spokesman said yesterday: "This group, along with anyone associating with football hooliganism, is being constantly monitored." | |

| No hiding place for football hooligans - 18/12/2007
Source : Derbyshire Times
Football hooligans who caused trouble at Chesterfield FC's first match of the season have been tracked down and arrested by police. Officers from Chesterfield's Football Intelligence Unit and Derbyshire’s Operation Cabby – the football banning order unit – worked with Cheshire police to catch 17 men who are suspected of serious disorder at Chesterfield FC’s away game at Chester on August 11 this year.
They have all been charged with public order offences and will appear at Chester Magistrates' Court in January 2008.
Sgt Paul Gregory from Operation Cabby said more arrests would be made, adding: “This operation shows that we will pursue any individual who wishes to become involved in football related violence.
“Operation Cabby works closely with the football intelligence officers at Chesterfield and Derby to actively target these people. The bottom line is that disorder in connection with football matches will not be tolerated.”

| Football violence: dawn-raid arrest - 21/12/2007
Source: http://www.hucknalldispatch.co.uk
A 29-YEAR-old man from Hucknall was one of five suspected football hooligans arrested in dawn raids last week. Darrel Porter, of Montague Road, was seized after police swooped on his home at 7 am on Thursday December 13.
He is suspected of causing violent disorder at a pre-season friendly between Notts County and Nottingham Forest at The Magpies' Meadow Lane ground.
Porter, who is a Notts County fan, was led away to be questioned by officers at Bridewell police station in Nottingham.
The match, on July 30, was disrupted when fans swarmed on to the pitch. Porter is believed to have been captured on CCTV footage.
A footballer himself, he has played for several local teams, including Rolls-Royce Leisure (Saturday) and Hucknall Sunday outfit, Spot-On 2000.
The raids were the third in the last fortnight, relating to the same match.
Two fellow Notts County supporters, aged 31 and 25, plus two Forest fans, aged 27 and 17, were also arrested.
Chief Insp Steve Haylett said: "The raids were successful. We want to show that this sort of violence will not be tolerated at football grounds. Football should be a family event."

| Football fan banned after derby brawl - 22/12/2007
Source: http://www.blackpoolgazette.co.uk
A FOOTBALL fan has been banned from matches after being involved in a mass brawl following the Blackpool Preston derby game. More than 30 men were involved in the fight on December 8 at The Hop Inn, King Street, Blackpool.
Recruitment consultant Glen Gallagher, 33, of Browning Crescent, Preston, appearing at Blackpool Magistrates Court, admitted disorderly behaviour.
Martine Connah, prosecuting, said PC Craig Bamber described the scene inside The Hop Inn as "A scene of mayhem" and saw Gallagher swinging punches at a man on the floor.
She said: "The defendant had a hat and scarf with the Preston North End logo on them in his possession."
Gallagher, who had no previous convictions and had spent 10 years in the Army, had watched the match, which was played in Preston.
He said he and five friends had then travelled to Blackpool for a soul music event on one of the piers.
But it was local fans who started the trouble according to the defendant.
He said: "The locals took offence when we went into the pub. It was obvious they were looking for trouble.
"A guy swung at me and I swung back in self-defence. "There was no football element involved in it on my part. "I am disgusted with myself though for getting caught-up in this."
He was put on a three year football banning order which forbids him from attending matches in England and Wales and when matches are being played abroad he must, if required, surrender his passport to police.
Gallagher was also fined £100 with £60 costs and ordered to pay the £15 victims' surcharge.

| Bradford vs Rotherham - 19/12/2007
Source: http://www.thetelegraphandargus.co.uk
Football violence plea
Police are appealing for witnesses after more than 20 football fans clashed in a busy high street when Bradford City's football match was called off.
A gang of Bantams fans fought a running battle with Rotherham United supporters in Wibsey High Street on Saturday.
The Yorkshire derby match had been called off when referee Danny McDermid pulled the plug less than three hours before the scheduled kick-off after carrying out two inspections of the Valley Parade pitch.
The fighting broke out at about 2.45pm.
PC Dara O'Shea, West Yorkshire Police's football intelligence officer, said: "People who create disorder on the streets of West Yorkshire will be dealt with seriously. We will not tolerate this sort of behaviour between rival football fans."
Anyone with information about the fight should contact West Yorkshire Police on 0845 6060606.
