Croatia: Bar probe into the post by the lawyer of Dinamo Zagreb hooligan firm - 10/08/2023

An uproar was caused by the post made by Davorin Karačić, the lawyer of Dinamo Zagreb hooligan firm Bad Blue Boys, where he wrote that "AEK fans are the biggest human scum that exists. They are human garbage, drug addicts, leftists and anarchists who throw Molotov cocktails and trample heads."

The lawyer, who has represented the Bad Blue Boys members in several trials and is a declared fan of the Zagreb club, argued that events happened entirely differently and in no way took place as described by the media.

The biggest Croatian website (INDEX) contacted the Croatian Bar Association about whether disciplinary action has been taken against  Karačić. It informed me that all the necessary steps are being taken to make the best decisions.

"Regarding your question about the posts of Karačić, a lawyer in Zagreb, who on his Facebook profile referred to the conflict between fans of Dinamo and AEK clubs, we inform you that the Disciplinary Prosecutor of the Croatian Bar Association has officially disciplinary investigation, based on the provisions of the Statute of the Croatian Bar Association. Inquiries will be made against the appointed lawyer to determine if there are grounds for a decision to initiate disciplinary proceedings," was the response of the Croatian Bar Association.

It brings the total number of people hit with indefinite bans to 33 after crowd disorder marred the Brackley Town clash

Chester FC has dished out indefinite bans to a further 25 people after crowd disorder marred last season's home play-off semi final defeat.

The bans prevent the individuals from stepping foot inside the Deva Stadium, while information will be shared with opposing clubs so they are also stopped from attending away fixtures. Eight people were handed lifetime bans in the aftermath of the defeat to Brackley Town on May 7, meaning a total of 33 have now been punished by the club.

The latest announcement comes in the same week the Blues confirmed they had been hit with a £5,000 FA fine after being found guilty of misconduct relating to the ugly scenes after the final whistle. The club says it is continuing to work with Cheshire Police who have issued CCTV images of people they want to speak to in connection with the disorder.

A journalist of a Croatian TV station reported about the visit of the country's ambassador to Greece to the Dinamo Zagreb hooligans arrested following a clash with AEK fans in Athens on Monday.

"The police have limited the number of suspects to 13. Among them are nine Croatian citizens, three Greek citizens and one from Albania. There may be only one perpetrator or more, but there is still the possibility that none of the suspects is guilty of the murder," Marko Šepat reported.

Šepat also referred to the rumours that have been reproduced by Greek media that the killer was Greek, noting that this information has not been confirmed by the authorities either.

Following the response, Šepat describes various videos that Nova TV has secured that show the hooligans' march. At the same time, at some point, Greek police officers appear who seem to be following them from a distance.

In the end, Šepat emphasises that according to sources, which he describes as unofficial, he has information that AEK refuses to hand over to the authorities the footage from the stadium's security cameras, implying that the specific images may change the facts of what exactly happened on Monday.

All 105 hooligans who were arrested over the deadly incidents ahead of the AEK-Dinamo Zagreb football match at Nea Philadelphia stadium in Athens on August 7 were remanded in custody after the last group of 33 defendants appeared before prosecutors on Sunday.

The vast majority are Croatian nationals, who travelled to Athens with the aim to cause violence, as the Croatian President himself admitted in statements made on Saturday.

Two Greeks and one Albanian are also among the detained.

Hooligans jailed in 16 prisons across Greece
The first prison warrants were issued for 41 of them, who will be jailed in 16 different prisons in Greece pending trial for their alleged involvement in the attack which resulted in the murder of Greek AEK football fan Michalis Katsouris.

The charges faced by the defendants range from setting up a criminal organization and premeditated murder to illegal possession and use of weapons, AMNA notes.

Of the total detained, 103 were arrested shortly after the incident, while the 104th was hospitalized under police guard and the 105th was arrested days later as he tried to leave Greece on a bus.

Greek media are reporting that Hellenic Police have the moment of victim Katsouris’ stabbing captured on CCTV, which will help investigators identify the killer(s).

Greek Judges and Prosecutors reply to Croatian President’s remarks
The Greek Association of Judges and Prosecutors issued a statement in response to the remarks made on Saturday by the President of Croatia, Zoran Milanovic, about the Croatian defendants’ judicial treatment.

“The statements of the President of Croatia constitute a direct intervention in the work of Justice of a member state of the European Union and an insult to the institutions of our country,” the Association says.

“The protection of fundamental legal interests, such as those of life, physical integrity and health and social peace is a primary obligation of a State, which ensures the orderly functioning of societies and the European acquis,” the statement continues.

“The Hellenic Republic has a tradition of respecting human rights and the Judiciary applies the laws of the organized Greek State which have been established within the framework of the Constitution and the Law of the European Union,” it concludes.

Brutal attack outside stadium
According to Greek media reports, a well-coordinated group of around 150 to 200 Dinamo supporters managed to enter Greece by road on Monday, August 7, despite the prohibition on fan movement from Croatia.

They descended on the area around the stadium of AEK, in the Athens suburb of Nea Philadelphia, on the night before the UEFA Champions League qualifier between AEK Athens and GNK Dinamo Zagreb.

“They had wild moods…They hit everywhere, whatever they could find. The event lasted half an hour…they had clubs, they were organized,” one of the eyewitnesses told Greek channel OPEN TV.

Besides the 29-year-old victim who succumbed to stab wounds, 10 more people were injured in the attack, four of whom remained in hospital.
