The 41-year-old man was with his son and brother when he was blasted at point blank range just hours before his team's 3-1 win over Ajax in a Champions League qualifier. Police were last night hunting the gunman but do not believe the attack is football related. The victim, who has not been named but is from Glasgow, was seriously ill in hospital last night. ****************************** Source : The Daily Mail Celtic supporter shot in chest at Dutch bar; Police and fans clash in stadium after attack.A CELTIC fan was undergoing emergency surgery last night after being shot in the chest while drinking in a Dutch bar. The 41-year-old man, who was not named, was in Amsterdam for the team's Champions League match against local side Ajax. The man was drinking with his son and brother in Teaser's sex bar, in the city centre, when a man entered and shot him once with a handgun. Terrified fans and passing tourists watched as the attacker fled, chased by other supporters, before disappearing into an alley near the city's main railway station. One Lanarkshire businessman, who asked not to be identified, was in the bar when the shooting happened around 2.30pm. He said: 'The bar was heaving with Celtic fans and everyone seemed to be in really good humour. The first sign of trouble came when I heard a glass being broken. Two guys came running past us out of the pub, followed by three of four Celtic supporters close behind. They were shouting: "Stop these guys. They've shot somebody".' Police and paramedics, including an officer from Strathclyde Police who had been on official duty monitoring fans' behaviour, arrived within minutes. As they attended to the victim, supporters filed out of the bar in the city's Damrak and gathered in nearby Dam Square. Last night, the injured man, from Glasgow, was undergoing surgery in a Dutch hospital and was said to be in a stable condition. Up to 10,000 Celtic supporters from all over the world had arrived in Holland for the match. Many packed the city's bars and restaurants and had been mingling happily with locals and rival fans. Elly Florax, spokesman for Amsterdam Police, said: 'At 2.30pm, my colleagues were told there had been a shooting at this bar. The victim is a 41-year-old who was born in Glasgow. I have seen his passport, but I am unable by law to confirm his identity. 'He has been taken to hospital and is undergoing surgery. His condition is not thought to be life-threatening.' She added: 'What happened is still a bit unclear, but it had nothing to do with the football game. 'The man who did the shooting had a brown face, and he was not wearing any soccer colours. There has been no other trouble in the city.' Celtic chairman Brian Quinn was informed of the incident while attending a club board meeting in Amsterdam's Crowne Plaza Hotel. Fighting broke out between rival fans at the Amsterdam Arena before the match, which Celtic won 3-1. _________________ | |
