The opposition PASOK party has called for the resignation of Citizen Protection Minister Giannis Oikonomou after leaked police documents showed that authorities possessed prior knowledge of Croatian hooligans’ intentions to travel to Athens, potentially with the malevolent aim of inciting violence.

A 29-year-old man lost his life after being repeatedly stabbed amid violent clashes between supporters of the AEK Athens and Dinamo Zagreb soccer clubs ahead of a scheduled match at the Opap Arena on Monday.

PASOK leader Nikos Androulakis said that the leaked internal documents disclosing foreknowledge of the Croatian hooligans’ movements represent “a substantial blow.” He criticized the decision, as outlined in the leaked documents, to merely “discreetly monitor” these fans.

Androulakis expressed his profound dismay over the fact that, despite a UEFA ban on fan movement, the Croatian hooligans were able to undertake their journey to the Greek capital via a motorcade, before boarding the ISAP electric railway and eventually disembarking at a station close to the Nea Filadelfia neighborhood. “Armed with bats and knives, they proceeded to the AEK stadium,” he said.

Emphasizing that the incident exemplified the glaring ineffectiveness of the conservative “executive state,” Androulakis added that the decision to relieve seven police officers of their duties after the violent episode, “could not absolve the substantial political responsibilities of… Oikonomou for the operational failure and the international embarrassment endured by the nation.”

A total of 17 Croatian nationals were apprehended across three different locations in Greece on Tuesday due to their alleged involvement in violent clashes between Greek and Croatian soccer supporters on Monday night, as reported by the Hellenic Police.

More specifically, a 20-year-old individual was taken into custody at the Kakavia border station around 4 p.m. He had boarded a bus destined for the Albanian capital, Tirana. Authorities are currently interrogating him to ascertain the extent of his participation.

Furthermore, seven more individuals were arrested in northern Greece while attempting to exit the country via the Evzones border station. Although knives were discovered in their vehicle, no additional evidence linking them to the incidents in Athens was uncovered. Nevertheless, law enforcement stated that they would present them before a prosecuting magistrate.

In the capital’s Ambelokipi neighborhood, nine people were initially brought to the Hellenic Police Headquarters (GADA). Subsequently, they were released after confirming their non-involvement in the clashes.

Meanwhile, out of the 98 individuals apprehended during the altercations on Monday night, four injured Greek nationals were released earlier on Tuesday. Three among them have already provided testimonies to the police. The remaining 94 individuals will be presented before a prosecuting magistrate on Wednesday. DNA samples will be collected from all of them in an effort to identify the perpetrator responsible for fatally stabbing a 29-year-old AEK fan during the confrontations.

Espanyol felt their sanction was too harsh, but equally the point of the sanction is to deter fans from doing so again, and to ensure clubs take the necessary measures. Given the safety of Barcelona’s players and staff was endangered, many will question whether this sanction achieves that.

"In the various fan forums, there is information that the Bad Blue Boys (including organised Dinamo fans) have been planning this attack for years and more specifically since 2015 after what they suffered in Athens," a Croatian media report says.

Eight years ago (and when the movement of fans was not allowed), Dinamo (which are friends with Panathinaikos), but also fans of Red Star (which are friends with those of Olympiacos), were found in Athens.

The most severe incident recorded was the attack of a motorcade against a taxi carrying four Croats. The motorbikes blocked the road, broke a 29-year-old AEK fan's death and the cab's windows, and threw a smoke grenade at the Croats, and the driver managed to get out and flee.

For the Dinamo hooligans, it was not the opposing team that attacked them that mattered, but the location, and they wanted to make their show in the same city to "restore" their wounded prestige. And they did it by taking human life...

However, the Croatian media openly blames the Dinamo fans for their actions in Athens, stressing that they hurt their team and the country and asking for their exemplary punishment. However, they also launch harsh accusations against the Greek police.

"This information can't exist in fan forums; there can't b videos of the convoy of vehicles that crossed half of Greece and did nothing at all," as their outlets highlighted.

Tuesday's Champions League qualifier between AEK Athens and Dinamo Zagreb has been postponed after a fan was stabbed to death following brawls outside the Agia Sophia Stadium in a northern suburb of Athens on Monday evening.

Police said eight others were injured, and 98 arrests were made.



Uefa had banned visiting supporters from both legs of the third-round qualifying tie over security concerns.

European football's governing body said the trouble meant the match had to be postponed, with the decision made in consultation with the local authorities.

"Uefa deplores in the strongest possible terms the appalling incidents that took place in Athens last night and resulted in the loss of a life," Uefa said.

"While expressing our deepest sympathy to the family of the victim, to AEK Athens FC and its fans, we would like to reiterate that violence has no place in our sport, and we expect that those responsible for this terrible act be arrested and consigned to justice in the shortest delay."

The return leg in Croatia will go ahead as planned next Tuesday,15 August, with the game in Athens to be rearranged for Friday, 18 August or Saturday, 19 August.

Greek police said the trouble started 90 minutes after Croatian side Dinamo had completed a pre-match training session at the stadium in Nea Philadelphia and left under police escort.

100-120, Dinamo fans came to the stadium and clashed with AEK fans who had gathered there.

Fans from both sides "threw flares, improvised incendiary devices, objects, stones, and also used improvised bats".

Police said a preliminary investigation had started, and they were trying to identify the perpetrators.

"GNK Dinamo strongly condemns the riots that took place last night in Athens," a Dinamo Zagreb statement said.

"Such events do not align with the values ​​and ethics we promote as a club and community.

"We are very concerned about this incident. GNK Dinamo would like to express its sincere condolences to the deceased's family."

Hooliganism has marred Greek football in recent years, and last year, the government increased the maximum sentence for crimes of fan violence from six months to five years after another fatal stabbing.

Alkis Kampanos, 19, was killed in February 2022 in Thessaloniki during a fight between the city's rival clubs, Aris and PAOK supporters.



Last month, seven defendants were found guilty of his murder and sentenced to life in prison. Five others received sentences of more than 19 years for complicity.

At the same time, none of the 94 Croats accepts that they are the perpetrator of the 29-year-old's murder (a DNA sample has been taken from all of them to identify it with the genetic material found at the scene of the raid), and they make sure to keep a tough stance.

This version was also supported by a journalist from Dnevnik Nova TV, who claimed that the Greek police have concluded from the fingerprints that the killer of the 29-year-old AEK fan is Greek.

Journalist Marko Šepat, in a report broadcast from Athens for Dnevnik Nova, claimed that "according to unofficial information, the police have fingerprints of the killer, and he is allegedly a Greek citizen."

Meanwhile, shortly after noon on Tuesday, 94 Croats were arrested for the deadly attack in Nea Philadelphia and were brought before the prosecutor - under draconian security measures.

The case file forwarded to prosecutors includes felony charges, the most basic of which is participation in a criminal organisation.

Five more arrested

Meanwhile, five more Croatian hooligans who were found to be involved in Monday night's murderous attack in Nea Philadelphia were spotted overnight by port and police officers in Thesprotia.

As reported by ERT, the five Croats were spotted by guards at the Igoumenitsa port while they were preparing to board the ship bound for Italy.

Nearly 100 Croatian football fans appeared in court on Wednesday to face charges that include murder and membership of a criminal organisation over their alleged involvement in deadly fan violence.

The handcuffed youths appeared before an investigative magistrate a day after a 29-year-old Greek fan was stabbed to death outside AEK Athens’ stadium.

The Champions League qualifier against Dinamo Zagreb was postponed following the violence.

Athens court officials said the magistrate issued the blanket charges against all 103 suspects, including 97 Croatian nationals.

The indictments also included charges of multiple assault and illegal possession and use of explosive material. The murder-related charge is likely to be dropped for most of the defendants as the investigation proceeds.

Amateur video of the attack showed dozens of youths wielding bats and iron bars running past the stadium, as flares and petrol bombs exploded. Ten people were injured and four remain hospitalised.

Elsewhere in Greece, police set up highway roadblocks and additional border checks to search for more suspects. Authorities announced the arrest of six Croatian nationals as they attempted to flee the country. Five of the suspects were detained in the northwestern port of Igoumenitsa as they prepared to board a ferry bound for Italy, while the sixth was arrested on a bus bound for Albania.

Four Maccabi Tel Aviv football club fans appear before Larnaca court

Police have detained four Israeli fans of Maccabi Tel Aviv football club after they tried to enter Larnaca’s AEK Arena stadium on Wednesday evening with 15 fireworks in their possession.

The arrest was made just before the Europa Conference League Qualifying match AEK Larnaca vs Maccabi Tel Aviv had started.

Three of the detained Israelis are aged 19 and one is 21 and will appear before court later on Thursday pending a remand order request.

All pleaded guilty and a fine of €500 was imposed on the two 19-year-olds and the 21-year-old, while the third 19-year-old was fined €700

At the same time, police went on high alert after Cypriot football fans allegedly made threatening gestures against Israeli fans in the city’s Finikoudes area on Tuesday evening.

Videos on social media showed fans – Cypriot and Israeli – running after each other through the city’s central streets.

The brief but alarming incident took place hours only after an AEK Athens fan was stabbed to death by Dinamo Zagreb hooligans.
