Irishman hospitalised after gang of 20 Inter Milan fans launch attack in Italian pub
An Irish man was rushed to hospital in Italy last week following an altercation with a group of football fans.
The 31-year-old had been out drinking with an English friend enjoying a drink in the Procaccini area of Milan on April 1, where a football game was being shown in a pub.
He reportedly bumped into somebody while walking past and a group of up to 20 men wearing Inter Milan shirts began a dispute, according to Italian media.
The gang then attacked the two men before leaving the scene as police were called.
Meanwhile, the victims were taken to Milan’s Fatebenefratelli Hospital to be treated for their injuries. The Irish man suffered “cuts to the head”, CorkBeo reports.
Police are now investigating the incident.

Nice mayor wants Basel fans banned for European visit - 11/04/2023
Source : https://www.france24.com/
The mayor of Nice, Christian Estrosi, said Tuesday that he did not want Basel fans coming to Nice for a Europa Conference League quarter-final second leg on April 20.
"I can only express my great concern about the upcoming arrival in the streets of Nice of hundreds of FC Basel supporters," said Estrosi in a statement, requesting that "Swiss fans do not make the trip to Nice on April 20".
The reputation of Basel ultras "precedes them," said the statement. "They travel in numbers and like fiery atmospheres."
Last year, they were "conspicuous" in Marseille in the last 16 of the Europa Conference League, said the statement, "with violent altercations in the vicinity of the Stade Velodrome".
"It is out of the question to witness another outburst of violence," said Estrosi.
In September, the Allianz Riviera stadium in Nice was the scene of serious incidents involving fans of visiting Cologne.

England : Swindon fan jailed after throwing firework at police officers and dog - 11/04/2023
Source: https://www.swindonadvertiser.co.uk/
A football hooligan who threw a firework at police officers and a police dog before a Swindon Town match has been jailed for four months.
Lewis H., of Collett Place in Latton near Swindon, pleaded guilty to four counts of assaulting an emergency worker and one count of causing unnecessary suffering to an animal.
The 22-year-old appeared in court after an incident ahead of Town's home game against Bristol Rovers on January 22, 2022.
H. threw a firework towards several police officers that then exploded at their feet.
The firework injured Insp Reed, T/Insp Fay, PC Miller, and SPT England and burned the nose of Police Dog Ross.
PD Ross has since returned to work.
Swindon Town and Bristol Rovers fans had to be kept apart by police before and after the 1-1 draw at the County Ground, with pubs and roads closed and horseback riders called in from Devon and Cornwall and Thames Valley to funnel the flow of football fans to and from the County Ground.
Police released a CCTV appeal for witnesses after the game, which also saw a pitch invasion.
Officers investigating the firework assault identified and arrested Hill after viewing CCTV footage and speaking to witnesses.
He was charged in December, then sentenced last Thursday in a hearing at Swindon Magistrates’ Court.
He now faces a four-month jail sentence and has received a football banning order that lasts three years.

Cyprus Rejects Hosting Greek Football Cup Final - 12/04/2023
Source : Greekreporter.com
On Wednesday, Greece’s football authority was denied its request to hold the cup final on the island of Cyprus. The decision was made after reports surfaced in the Greek media claiming that the event was already confirmed. However, Cypriot authorities have said that they never received any such request.
The Cyprus police announced that they rejected the Greek request to hold the football match on the island, citing concerns over public safety. They stated that they made this decision after requesting official data and information from the Greek police about the potential danger posed by the match.
The issue was raised amid concerns in Cyprus of mounting violence occurring during sports matches.
Greece or Cyprus? Confusion over the football game’s location Earlier this week, there was confusion over where the Greek football cup final would take place, as reports suggested it would be held in Cyprus.
This comes after a series of violent incidents have plagued sporting events on the island, leading to arrests and police investigations.
However, both Cypriot Justice Minister Anna Procopiou and police spokesman Christos Andreou denied any knowledge that a formal request had been made to host the game in Cyprus. Andreou stated that they only found out about it through the press.
“We cannot make statements over something that has not been formally requested of us. If a request is made, we can then evaluate it,” Procopiou told the Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation.
For now, it seems extremely unlikely that Cyprus will host the Greek football cup final on the island. A statement by the Cypriot police on the issue is difficult to interpret as anything other than a firm rejection.
“Regarding the above issue, the Cyprus Police reports that it cannot respond positively to the request of the Hellenic Football Federation to hold the Greek Cup Final in Cyprus. The issue has occupied the relevant Police Departments since the first moment, when the matter saw the light of day,” read the statement.
“For this purpose, the Greek Police officially requested data and information regarding the dangers posed by the football match in question. The information received is such as to compel the Police not to advocate the holding of the match in question in Cyprus,” the statement continued.
Local Authorities Struggling to Control Sports-Related Violence The past few weeks have seen numerous arrests in Cyprus after fans rioted during a basketball match and set fire to offices and a bus stop. A report prepared by the police for the justice minister reportedly placed most of the blame for the violence on three police officers.
The arrests were made in relation to a riot which took place on March 26 during the Anorthosis-Apollon basketball semi-finals at the Tassos Papadopoulos Eleftheria Stadium in Nicosia.
Not unlike Cyprus, Greece has had also suffered from spate of sport-related violence, particularly during some football matches.
ast year, an escalation in clashes between football hooligans of rival teams prompted the Greek Supreme Court to put out a circular asking for swift trials and stiffer penalties on football hooligans who commit sports-related crimes.
Early last year, the murder of Alkis Kampanos, a 19-year-old football fan, in Greece’s second-largest city, Thessaloniki, caused widespread shock and indignation. The police responded by raiding the homes of suspected football hooligans.
A 23-year-old man –a PAOK F.C Thessaloniki hooligan– was later arrested and charged with murder as well as attempted murder.
The tragic murder highlighted the pervasive issue of football and sports-related violence in Greece, which also seems to cause problems in Cyprus.

Around 400 Hapoel Jerusalem fans arrived to support their team in Greece as the club met AEK Athens in the Basketball Champions League (BCL) playoffs. However, they were welcomed with violence.
As documented by several Israeli news outlets, the Greek fans started throwing various things at the Israeli supporters. One of the fans was injured in the process, Tomer Givati from Israel Hayom writes.
AEK fans threw firecrackers at the opposing fans, and started burning an Israeli flag, while several Palestinian flags were seen in the arena as well.
Israeli fans later responded with flares.
