No Eintracht fans in Napoli for Champions League return leg
Eintracht Frankfurt fans will not be allowed to attend their Champions League return leg at Napoli next week with Italy's interior ministry planning to stop any sale to visiting spectators, the Bundesliga club said on Tuesday.
Frankfurt, who lost the first leg 2-0 in Germany, expected just under 3,000 travelling fans in the stadium for the game.
"Eintracht Frankfurt were informed yesterday late evening from (European soccer body) UEFA that Italy's interior ministry would issue a regulation today that bans the (Italian) club from selling tickets to fans of Eintracht Frankfurt for the return leg on March 15," the German club said in a statement.
"This shall include the entire visiting fan contingent of 2,700 including 2,400 in the visiting fans sector, that Eintracht were eligible for.
"Frankfurt will comment further on this development once there are specific details of the regulation available."
Fans of both teams clashed prior to the first leg in Frankfurt with police having labelled that game as high risk.
Europa League winners last year, Frankfurt, are enjoying their best run in decades on the pitch with fans offering strong support in away matches.

Eintracht Frankfurt fans aided by Atalanta ultras to get around Napoli ban
Circa 400 Eintracht Frankfurt fans have arrived in Naples, but it seems they are accompanied by Atalanta ultras, creating even more danger of potential clashes with Napoli supporters.
The Champions League Round of 16 tie is at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona on Wednesday at 20.00 GMT.
Local authorities initially banned anyone from Germany buying a ticket due to security fears, but tightened that after losing a legal appeal to just those who are born in or resident in Frankfurt.
Nonetheless, circa 400 Eintracht fans have already arrived in the city of Naples, coming by train from Bergamo, Salerno and Bari.
Going in via Bergamo raised a few eyebrows and it is now reported that they are accompanied by Atalanta ultras.
It is feared the Atalanta organised fan groups helped Eintracht Frankfurt to purchase tickets and bypass the restrictions.
They could also try to enter the stadium in order to cheer on the Germans, creating a potential powder keg.
Atalanta only recently played Napoli and there were only six fans present because the ultras had been banned from travelling due to security concerns.
Even worse than the potential of trouble inside the stadium is the fear that as they are already in the city, there will be clashes in the streets and cafes ahead of the match.

Eight arrested after Champions League violence in Naples- 16/03/2023
Source : https://www.france24.com/
Three German football fans and five locals were arrested following clashes with police in Naples before and after Napoli's Champions League win over Eintracht Frankfurt, a local official said Thursday.
Six police officers were injured in the violence on Wednesday evening, according to Alessandro Giuliano, who is responsible for public safety in Naples.
Police were in the process of identifying 470 German fans who stayed in the city, and were scouring images to establish those responsible for the disorder, he told a press conference.
Dozens of supporters of Atalanta also joined forces with supporters of the German side, with whom they are twinned.
The first clashes occurred on Wednesday afternoon in Naples' historic centre, and continued after the match, an easy 3-0 win for Napoli which took them through to the Champions League quarter-finals for the first time.
Smoke bombs and flares, chairs, bottles and metal poles were thrown at police, who responded with tear gas. Later, Napoli fans were filmed by Italian media throwing objects at buses carrying Eintracht fans.
Naples mayor Gaetano Manfredi condemned the "unacceptable" violence, while opposition politicians have questioned the government's handling of the situation, notably by Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi.
Napoli player Juan Jesus said the disorder was "bad for the city, and bad for soccer".
"Because people come, then destroy, then leave, it's not a good thing. It's not possible to still see this in 2023, we are sorry to see these scenes," he said.
The German supporters had travelled to southern Italy even though Eintracht decided against selling tickets for the away section in Naples for the second leg of the last 16 tie.
The Frankfurt club decided not to take up their allocation after the Naples prefecture decided on Sunday to ban residents of the German city from buying tickets.
A earlier Italian ban on Eintracht fans who lived anywhere in Germany was overturned.
Sunday's decision came after violence in the first leg that was won 2-0 by Napoli in Frankfurt, which led to nine people being taken into custody.
Eintracht fans have been under close surveillance by European governing body UEFA since the pitch invasion which greeted the club reaching the final of the Europa League, which they won by beating Scottish club Rangers.

Three arrested and officer suffers head injury from 'missile' before Palace tie
Sussex Police responded to a small minority of fans who displayed “disruptive and disorderly behaviour” in Brighton before the match.
A 21-year-old man and 27-year-old man were arrested on suspicion of affray "at a premises", likely to be a pub, near the railway station.
They both remain in custody at this time.
A man was arrested in Kemp Street, near the station, and issued with a Section 35 dispersal order to leave the area.
An 18-year-old man was also issued with a Section 35 dispersal order and was not allowed in to the Amex Stadium before the match for homophobic chanting.
A Sussex Police spokesman said: “Sussex Police works with partners including Southern Rail, British Transport Police, the Premier League, and Brighton and Hove Albion to manage the safe arrival and departure of supporters from the Amex Community Stadium.
“There were queues at Brighton Station, however this is common and sometimes causes some late arrivals on match days.
“Rail services operated as advertised, and no request was made to delay kick-off.
“We’d like to thank the vast majority of fans who behaved responsibly before, during and after the game.
“However, there was a small minority of fans who displayed disruptive and disorderly behaviour.
“One officer on duty at the cordon outside the stadium sustained a head injury.
Hundreds of officers were in Brighton and Falmer for the match against Crystal Palace.
Dozens of police vans were used along with dogs and horses to control the crowds.

Fiorentina star left bloodied with broken nose after punch from pitch invader
the victory was marred after Gaetano Castrovilli has scored Fiorentina 's final goal of the night. Two Sivasspor supporters invaded the pitch, running around in the hosts' half of the pitch, where Fiorentina players were also celebrating.
As one of the fans was passing Biano, who was walking over to his celebrating team-mates, the man hit the Fiorentina star in the face. The 20-year-old bled from his nose and mouth, leaving the pitch immediately upon the final whistle.
Despite the shocking incident, Biano appeared to be in good spirits once he got back to the dressing room. He posted a photo on his Instagram stories of his bloodied face, with the caption "Not bad".
Following his side's win, Fiorentina boss Vincenzo Italiano revealed Biano's nose had been broken by the punch. Italiano condemned the incident, though insisted it was also a shame that the fan had spoiled the reputation of the Sivasspor crowd.

The Netherlands : Police union wants away team fans banned from upcoming football matches - 18/03/2023
Source : https://nltimes.nl/
Dutch police labor union NPB believes the Netherlands is "very close" to reaching a point where away fans should be banned from all Dutch football matches. "The limit is in sight," said union chair Jan Struijs in an interview with AD on Saturday.
"The police are under serious pressure and have to make choices," said Struijs. He acknowledged that unions have already urged mayors to implement this measure several times.
"Now that the end of the season is approaching, you notice that tensions are increasing, and that not all supporters are in control of their emotions. Something only needs to happen a few more times." Once that point arrives, football fans should be more permanently banned from attending, Struijs told the newspaper.
The NPB chair said that there football-related violence is similar as in previous years, but the police rank-and-file has still not recovered to full strength after the coronavirus pandemic. The police "still spend a lot of manpower on demonstrations, and the festival season is coming again. We have to make choices," he continued.
Leeuwarden Mayor Sybrand Buma decided last month to no longer allow visiting team fans to attend SC Cambuur home matches for the rest of the season. Buma made that decision in consultation with the Public Prosecution Service and the police after rioters caused destruction to his city following a match against SC Heerenveen. That caused frustration within the Frisian club.
After the decision in Leeuwarden, Dutch football association KNVB, the Eredivisie and the Eerste Divisie also expressed their disagreement to a ban on away fans. They said that those in charge of professional football in the Netherlands "believe that, in principle, the supporters of both clubs should be able to be present at every match." They added, "That makes the atmosphere in the stadiums and is part of professional football."
The Dutch association of football fans, Supporterscollectief Nederland, also said it believes that banning visiting team supporters is not the solution to the problems.
