Cypriot Cup Final Four games suspended due to serious incidents
Fans and police forces clashed before and during the first Cypriot Cup semi-final game between Apollon Limassol and Anorthosis. Both Final Four games will be played on Monday.
Serious incidents occurred at the gym 'Tasos Papadopoulos' in Nicosia during the Cypriot Cup Final Four.
According to multiple reports from local media, the installation turned into a battlefield while the first semi-final game between Apollon Limassol and Anorthosis was being played.
The tension was high outside the stadium, as before tipoff, Apollon fans clashed with police forces, who in turn used tear gas.
However, the situation became worse during halftime, when the fans of the Limassol team tried to enter the stadium shortly after the end of the first part.
More incidents transpired between fans and the police, with the match being brought to a halt and referees requesting an evacuation of the court for the fixture to continue.
As soon as the stoppage was decided, fans leaving the stadium damaged bus stops and clashed with police, who used tear gas. At the same time, parked police cars became a target for the angry mob.
The Cypriot Basketball Federation decided the postponement of Sunday's Final Four games, including the one featuring AEK and Keravnos scheduled for 18:30 CET, in accordance with police instructions.
At halftime, Anorthosis were leading 36-34. The match will continue on Monday (14:30 CET) without fans, while the second semi-final between AEK and Keravnos will start at 18:00.
However, the final game scheduled for Tuesday, March 28, will not take place as planned. The date will be announced at a later stage.

Cyprus gets tough on fan violence at sporting events
Cyprus’ justice minister on Wednesday unveiled a host of measures to combat fan violence at sporting events, including pre-game drug and alcohol tests, increased body searches and tougher policing.
The measures come days after opposing fans at a basketball playoff game between rivals Anorthosis and Apollon fought inside and outside the Tassos Papadopoulos stadium in the capital Nicosia, setting fire to public transport offices outside the venue.
Justice minister Anna Koukkides-Procopiou said the government will introduce legal amendments enabling police to administer drug and alcohol tests to suspected users ahead of sporting events.
Police will intensify searches of fans entering venues while bans for convicted offenders will be raised to a maximum of 10 years.
A dedicated riot squad will be tasked with exclusively policing sporting and other “high-risk” events, while police inspections and oversight of travelling fans will be stepped up.
Police arrested three people in connection with the violence at the basketball game that saw three Nicosia Public Transport offices opposite the stadium go up in flames after being hit by Molotov cocktails.
Police said six officers suffered minor injuries after being showered with flares, Molotov cocktails, rocks and other projectiles, while several police and private vehicles parked outside the stadium were damaged.
One officer who had accompanied Apollon fans aboard their bus has been suspended pending a disciplinary probe because he allegedly refused to cooperate with investigators looking into the violence, police said.
Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides condemned the violence, saying such behavior can no longer be tolerated.
“It’s been discussed, discussed again, every time after such incidents there are meetings and more meetings,” he told reporters Tuesday. “It’s time for decisions.”
Fan organizations pointed a finger of blame at law enforcement for not doing its job, but police representatives spoke out against what they said was a lack of support for officers on the front lines of such violence.
Other measures Koukkides-Procopiou announced were the more active involvement of police in the issuing of fan identification cards that were introduced as a way to stave off unruly behavior by fans concealing their identity.
She said closed-circuit cameras will be installed at all stadiums where top-flight sporting events are being held.
The minister added that the attorney general’s office will look into legal amendments empowering police to enforce either a ban on travelling fans if deemed necessary, or canceling the event altogether.
Police arrest third suspect in basketball match riot
Police have arrested another man, a 29-year-old, in connection to the incidents involving fans at the Anorthosis-Apollon basketball semi-finals, who fought with police officers last Sunday.
The arrest took place on Wednesday evening. Two other people were taken into custody in the past days, one of whom was found in possession of a half-smoked cannabis cigarette. He was charged and released on Monday.
The second one was arrested on Tuesday remanded in police custody for four days. A 25-year-old for whom an arrest warrant has been issued is still at large.
According to authorities, fans began fighting with officers before the state of the match at Tassos Papadopoulos Eleftheria Stadium, when they tried to enter without a ticket.
Police said that they threw rocks at them, and in an attempt to restore order authorities used tear gas.
Following the incidents outside, police said that the rioting continued inside during the match, where the fans of both clubs began to clash with officers.
Police said that from the tear gas and rioting outside the stadium, fires were set to an office causing severe damages, and necessitating the intervention of four fire trucks.
President Nikos Christodoulides on Tuesday called on fans to behave otherwise all sporting matches will be held without spectators.
“This deviant behaviour cannot be repeated. Many share responsibility on the matter and everyone should take on the responsibility they have,” he said.

Eintracht Frankfurt have been fined 70,000 euros and ordered to partially close its stadium for its next UEFA match after their fans lit fireworks and blocked passageways in last month’s home loss to Napoli, European football’s governing body said on Thursday.
The Bundesliga club lost the first leg of its Champions League last-16 match in Germany 2-0, before exiting 5-0 on aggregate after a fraught return encounter when fans clashed with police in Naples prior to the match.

Linfield hooligans team up with Dutch soccer thugs to cause League-Cup-final chaos - ??/03/2023
Source :
It’s a sinister development in a season which has seen a worrying rise of violence and crowd disorder at local soccer.
Dutch soccer thugs teamed up with Linfield hooligans to launch attacks on rival fans at the League Cup final recently, we can reveal. Our pictures show that thugs who have attached themselves to little-known VVV Venlo and Linfield have established a disturbing alliance.
A group of Dutch ‘supporters’ of VVV Venlo were pictured posing with Linfield hooligans before the Belfast showdown with Coleraine FC at Windsor Park a fortnight ago.
Shortly after this picture was taken in south Belfast, not far from the National Stadium, there was a massive punch-up between two groups of hooligans on the Donegall Road before the match.
It’s a sinister development in a season which has seen a worrying rise of violence and crowd disorder at local soccer.
A number of people were injured at that League Cup final and six people were arrested in fighting in separate incidents around the ground, with a group of Linfield fans — who call themselves ‘Blue Unity’ — at the heart of much of the trouble.
And we can reveal a group of Linfield fans returned the ‘hospitality’ by flying to the Netherlands last weekend to go to a match involving VVV Venlo.
Dutch football has been plagued with football violence for years and while VVV Venlo play in the second tier, they have a vociferous section of so-called ‘ultras’ who are well known for fighting and causing disorder at football matches.
Earlier this month, a crowd of just over 11,000 watched the Bet McLean Cup showpiece final, with the majority enjoying a great day out in which Linfield won 2-0.
But rival hooligans clashed before and after the game around the Lisburn Road and Boucher Road.
It is understood Coleraine fans planned to attack the First Belfast Rangers Supporter’s Club — better known as the Barrington — a well-known Linfield haunt.
But they were met by their rivals who were tipped off and a massive clash ensued.
Dutch hooligans were at the centre of that clash, we understand, and were present inside the ground when Linfield fans let off flares and smoke bombs.
Afterwards the police thanked both clubs for their efforts in keeping the peace but revealed they had to deal with “a small number of individuals who ignored police advice and appeals for common sense before the game”.
The PSNI said a number of opposing fans were involved in a public order disturbance shortly before kick-off in the Donegall Road and Tates Avenue Bridge areas, which resulted in a 43-year-old man being arrested on suspicion of public order-related offences.
There were also separate reports of two men sustaining injuries in an assault outside the stadium.
Superintendent Christian Bradley said in the aftermath: “Our officers were in place to deal swiftly and effectively with any troublemakers. The majority of the issues were outside the venue — however, a number of flares/smoke bombs were set off inside the stadium which we are investigating.
“A total of six arrests were made for public order-related offences and, where applicable, we will be seeking football banning orders. As part of our follow-up, we will also be reviewing any available CCTV.” The violence came just weeks after Linfield fans had thrown a number of objects on to the pitch at The Oval during a 3-0 defeat to Belfast rivals Glentoran.
That game was halted twice after Glentoran players Aaron McCarey and Marcus Kane appeared to be struck by items.
Afterwards Linfield vowed to meet fans to address issues around objects being thrown on to the pitch and flares being let off in the stands.
Sources at Linfield are said to have been “extremely disappointed” with the trouble and flares that blighted the final just a few days after they had a stadium fan ban overturned on appeal and reduced to a £7,500 fine.
Last Sunday Blue Unity travelled to Holland to join their newfound friends for VVV Venlo’s derby against Roda Kerkrade which finished 1-1.

Football hooligans banned from every UK stadium after pre-match brawl outside pub - 31/03/2023
Source : Yahoo
Four football hooligans involved in a pre-match brawl outside a pub have been banned from every stadium in the UK.
Rival supporters became involved in the kerfuffle outside a Newcastle pub before a 5.30pm tie with Chelsea on November 12 last year.
The fight broke out outside the Black and White Bull pub on Barrack Road ahead of the Newcastle’s one-nil victory over the Blues.
The four men have now been served with football banning orders stopping them from attending any regulated football match in the UK for the next three years.
Andrew Ferrell, 38, of Newburn, Thomas Jennison, 21, of North Shields, Ryan Walton, 32, of Blakelaw, and Liam Webster, 39, of Kenton have also been banned from being within a designated distance of St James’ Park on matchdays, and won’t be allowed within a mile of any away ground in England and Wales where a game involving Newcastle or England is being played.
Police say they are continuing to investigate the incident and are working to identify anybody else involved.

Officers previously said more than 20 people were believed to have been involved in the fracas.
Detective Inspector Gillian Beecroft, of Northumbria Police, said: “We are pleased to have secured banning orders against these four individuals.
“The overwhelming majority of football fans in the North East are a credit to the clubs they support as well as the region as a whole.
“However, before this particular game, the behaviour of a small minority of supporters was totally unacceptable. This type of violent incident will simply not be tolerated.
“We hope that the banning orders handed down act as a warning to anyone thinking of taking part in disorder. You will be identified and brought before the courts to face the consequences of your actions.”
A force spokesperson added "Anyone with information regarding the disorder before the Newcastle vs Chelsea game should contact police via the ‘Tell Us Something’ page on our website or by calling 101 quoting log NP-20221112-0645."

Netherlands: Arrests - 31/03/2023

Police have arrested eight Feyenoord hooligans, 'Rotterdam Radicals' for violent riots in Hoeksche Waard.
According to the police, the eight belong to the group 'Rotterdam Radicals', a branch of the club's hard core. These are men between the ages of 19 and 30, from Rotterdam, Dordrecht, Barendrecht, Spijkenisse, Leidschendam, 's Gravenzande and 's Gravendeel. They are suspected of public violence, attempted aggravated assault and attempted manslaughter. This is the second time in a short time that Rotterdam police have arrested a group of the club's hard core members. In January, eleven members of the Rotterdam Jongeren Kern (RJK) were arrested, including for threats, discrimination, insult, vandalism and arson. For example, they were implicated in the graffiti on Alderman Robert Simons' house and the threats against Mayor Aboutaleb and Roze Kameraden leader Paul van Dorst. Police have launched a major investigation after a number of these incidents.
Immobilization of police vehicles During the riots in the village of Hoeksche Waard, officers were surrounded by a group of thirty young people. They threw big firecrackers at the police. When they wanted to flee, it turned out that "calles" had been placed in front of the police cars, so that they could not leave.
The ME had intervened to separate the group. During this violence, an officer was slightly injured, plainclothes police officers were also beaten. Police have previously arrested five suspects on suspicion of attempted manslaughter or aggravated assault. They have already appeared in court. In a video that was recently released against them during a court hearing, one of the suspects says, "If I catch a cop, will you beat him to death?"

Cyprus: Following Basketball game Anorthosis vs Apollon - 31/03/2023
Source : Cyprus Mail
Police arrest two more suspects in basketball match riot
Police made two more arrests in the aftermath of last weekend’s violence at a sporting event, raising the total number of suspects arrested to four.
The fallout from last Sunday’s violence at the Anorthosis-Apollon basketball semi-final at Tassos Papadopoulos Eleftheria Stadium sparked fresh debate over how – and who – is to deal with hooligans.
Police on Friday said the latest arrests – two men aged 25 and 31, both from Limassol – were made after the force secured arrest warrants against the two suspects. Another two suspects are still being sought.
Last weekend’s violence saw considerable destruction of property along with a series of injuries, too, including three officers.
The police and government faced criticism for seemingly being unable to get the situation under control, prompting cabinet to announce tough new measures.
That includes random spot checks at stadiums for alcohol and drug use.
But police unions on Thursday decried the government’s measures as “unrealistic”. They further claimed that the procedures for reporting officers are too easy and prevents them from being able to do their job.
