Germany : Hundreds of hooligans attend funeral of neo-Nazi figure in Chemnitz - 18/03/2019
Source : https://www.thelocal.de/
Hundreds of hooligans turned up at the funeral of a neo-Nazi figure in eastern Germany's Chemnitz, with police out in force to ward off any violence in a city previously rocked by far-right rioting.
There was no overt display of neo-Nazi insignia by the silent, mostly male crowd lining the road leading to a cemetery for the funeral of Thomas Haller, the co-founder of a group called "HooNaRa" (Hooligans-Nazis-Racists).
But security forces were not taking any chances in the city rocked by far-right riots last August over the fatal stabbing of a German man allegedly by two asylum seekers -- an Iraqi and a Syrian.
The funeral was also taking place on a day when a trial opened against the 23-year-old Syrian accused in last year's killing.
Haller had for years provided security for fourth-tier football club Chemnitzer FC.
Earlier this month, fans of the club had paid tribute to him, with the stadium's video screen showing his picture during a minute's silence.
The city of Chemnitz, about 20 kilometres from the Czech border, has long had an extremist subculture.
In the 1990s the city was an early hideout for the National Socialist Underground, a militant neo-Nazi cell that was only uncovered in 2011 after it had murdered 10 people.
Last August, it made international headlines as neo-Nazis and far-right football hooligans went on the rampage through the city, attacking people of foreign appearance, after the stabbing of a 35-year-old German, Daniel Hillig.

British football hit by cocaine surge with senior police officers blaming drug for rise in violence at stadiums - 19/03/2019
Source : https://www.dailymail.co.uk/
An alarming rise in cocaine use at football stadiums is fuelling growing levels of disorder, senior police officers have told Sportsmail.
In another weekend of violence, a steward was treated for a suspected broken nose after one of three pitch invasions. Police figures reveal a 10 per cent increase in drug-related arrests at grounds in the past year, including a doubling of arrests for cocaine possession — from 32 to 68. But police believe these figures grossly understate the true picture.
Swabs taken by police in club toilets reveal increased evidence of cocaine-taking. One force made 15 arrests for possession of the drug at a recent Championship game.
But senior officers say the cocaine scourge — which reflects rising use of the drug in society — is virtually impossible to deal with because of the clubs' determination to replace police with stewards and security firms to cut costs. Many stewards do not even have powers to search fans who are a threat to public order.
Deputy Chief Constable Mark Roberts, the National Police Chiefs' Council football policing lead, told Sportsmail on Monday that cocaine was a major concern.
He said: 'We believe it is linked to a rise in disorder at grounds. It is a significant factor.'
Roberts disclosed that a study of the 43 British police forces has revealed the total cost of policing football last year was £48.5million. Yet the total amount of that cost recovered by forces was a mere £5.5m.
Police want clubs to examine contributing to costs of policing beyond the precincts of grounds and possibly commit to some form of direct funding for police. The Association of Police and Crime Commissioners (APCC) on Monday called for a change in the law to allow forces to recover more costs for policing games.
Roberts said: 'Football can't just pick and choose the bits that look sweet for it. It wants its stadiums to be shiny and pristine but on the outside police are left to pick up the pieces. The cocaine problem is very much a part of that. Policing it and deterring it requires professional expertise.'
His comments followed another dire weekend for the game's reputation. A week after Aston Villa's Jack Grealish was attacked by a fan, there were a further three pitch invasions, one of which left a female steward with a suspected broken nose.
The steward received treatment from paramedics at Bournemouth's Vitality Stadium after being injured when a group of Newcastle fans entered the playing area to celebrate Matt Ritchie's late equaliser.
Dorset Police have arrested seven fans, including a 14-year-old boy. Newcastle said on Monday that they were working with police and fans and would 'review... individual cases before determining if any further club-related punishment is appropriate'.
The FA will write to both clubs to seek their observations on the incident, having studied referee Mike Dean's report. They will also write to West Ham and Swansea City after fans entered the playing areas at the London Stadium and the Liberty Stadium.
As police have vanished from grounds, disorder has made a significant return — with incidents up by 45 per cent over the past two seasons. New police figures suggest that cases of serious disorder at games rose from 70 to 87 last year, with 38 per cent of all fixtures reporting some form or violence or disorder.
There has also been a 14 per cent increase in breaches of segregation — up from 105 to 120 — while hate crime is up a huge 67 per cent.
APCC's football policing lead, Tim Passmore, called for a change in the law to allow forces to recover the full costs of policing football matches.
He said: 'It doesn't seem reasonable to me that the public should effectively be paying for this additional policing to support a commercial enterprise.
'This applies to the extra costs incurred for policing around stadium and in public spaces surrounding the stadiums. Without a change in the law these costs cannot be recovered unless these is a local, voluntary agreement.
'Police and Crime Commissioners are working as an association with the Home Office to come up with a satisfactory solution.'

Greece : Football fan loses sight in eye after being hit by riot police - 20/03/2019
Source : http://www.ekathimerini.com/
An alarming rise in cocaine use at football stadiums is fuelling growing levels of disorder, senior police officers have told Sportsmail.
A 31-year-old soccer fan that attended the abandoned local derby between Panathinaikos and Olympiakos at the Athens Olympic Stadium on Sunday has lot his sight in his left eye after being hit in the face with a baton by riot police, according to reports on Tuesday.
Eyewitnesses told Kathimerini that the victim, a ship engineer, was injured outside the stadium after the match was abandoned in the 70th minute due to security concerns sparked by violent clashes between fans and riot police.
They said the incident occurred after a 45-year-old man, who had gone to the match with the 31-year-old, was attacked and arrested by police after he took issue with them over their use of tear gas.
The 31-year-old, along with a 30-year-old relative, were hit in the face by riot police as they tried to reassure them that the 45-year-old was not involved in the riots.
Police arrested eight people in connection with the clashes.

Italy : Six Inter Fans Receive Jails Sentences for Violent Clashes With Napoli Supporters in December - 20/03/2019
Source : https://www.90min.com/
Six Inter fans have been sentenced to jail time for their part in the violent clashes that occurred in the build up to the Serie A clash with Napoli in December, which left one fan dead.
The events took place on Boxing Day, hours before the Nerazzurri beat Napoli 1-0 at San Siro in a game marred by racist chants from sections of the home crowd aimed at centre back Kalidou Koulibaly, who was ultimately sent off alongside Dries Mertens on an unsavoury evening.
According to reports from the Washington Post, the sentences handed out to the perpetrators of these pre-match crimes ranged between 22 and 44 months, although one supporter is understood to have reached a plea deal after cooperating with the authorities during the investigation.
The investigators found the attacks to be premeditated, with the death of 35-year-old fan Daniele Belardinelli the result of a fatal strike from a van or SUV amid the clashes outside the stadium.
These vehicles were apparently used so that the ultras could avoid police detection in the build up to the skirmish, which involved a myriad of weapons, including knives and bars. However, it was confirmed that they are still attempting to identify a number of other fans as well as several of the vehicles used.
The club themselves were punished for these incidents with a two-game stadium ban, but this clearly didn't have the intended effect, as more racially abusive chants were heard aimed at midfielder Franck Kessie during Sunday's derby victory over Milan.

PSG fans caught with drugs, knives and knuckledusters before Chelsea win
Goals from Hannah Blundell and Erin Cuthbert gave Chelsea real hope of reaching the last four of the Champions League for the second season in succession but their success was marred by a group of visiting Paris Saint-Germain supporters armed with weapons who were turned away from the ground by police before kick-off.
One person was arrested for possession of Class A drugs in dramatic events not usually associated with women’s club football, with police later confirming that they had confiscated knives and knuckledusters when they searched the fans’ coach. A group of PSG’s “ultra” supporters had earlier caused damage at the stadium before being escorted away from the ground and Chelsea’s manager, Emma Hayes, admitted she is hoping no Chelsea supporters will be dissuaded from making the trip to the French capital for the second leg next Wednesday as a result.

PSG criticise police and Chelsea after fans banned from women’s match - 22/03/2019
Source : https://www.theguardian.com/
Paris Saint-Germain have criticised the Metropolitan police and Chelsea after several of their supporters were turned away from Thursday’s Champions League tie at Kingsmeadow.
A 2-0 victory for Emma Hayes’s side was marred by events beforehand when a group of PSG’s “ultra” supporters were turned away from the ground before kick-off, with police later confirming reports they had confiscated knives and knuckledusters when they searched the fans’ coach. One man was also arrested for possession of a class A substance but rather than condemn their supporters, a statement from PSG on Friday appeared to blame the police and Chelsea for not allowing them to watch the game.
“We repeat that the local authorities have not brought any evidence of wrongdoing, or at least no facts which would justify such a ban on attending the match,” read the statement.
“All of our supporters were searched, and if any of these searches or facts had been under criminal law, we can imagine the concerned supporters would not have been able to leave British territory without being disturbed.
“Surprisingly, we note that Chelsea, on the morning of the match, did not want the presence of our supporters, arguing of alleged damage to the stadium which was caused, according to local witnesses, prior to the arrival of our fans in London
“We express our fullest support to fans of Paris Saint-Germain who, in the middle of the week, had arranged their schedule to support our women’s team and we count on their fervour during the return match next Wednesday.”
Police have yet to comment on PSG’s claims, although their statement on Thursday said they had initially been called to Kingsmeadow at 8am after reports of PSG fans causing damage at the stadium. It is understood a door was damaged and some graffiti was sprayed on walls before they were escorted away, with police also confirming they had been “made aware of sporadic instances of disorder involving PSG supporters at Waterloo and Wimbledon stations” later in the day.
“Those involved were identified when they attended Kingsmeadow this evening and were stopped,” it added. “A coach they were travelling in was searched and weapons, including knives and knuckledusters, were recovered along with class A drugs. One man from the coach was arrested for possession of class A drugs and the remaining passengers were escorted from the area.”
Chelsea are understood to be looking to issue travel advice to Blues supporters for the second leg, which will take place at Stade Jean-Bouin. A club spokesman said: “We keep security matters under continual review.”
Uefa later confirmed no disciplinary proceedings will be taken against PSG.
