West Midlands Police make 10 arrests as disorder mars Aston Villa-Birmingham derby
The force confirmed their officers were pelted with bricks and other missiles by Birmingham City fans after the match and chief superintendent Steve Graham said they were "fortunate no-one was hurt". Clappers issued to home supporters at St Andrew's were also launched onto the pitch during the game, angering the Villa manager Steve Bruce, who once held the same position at the Blues.
Match commander Graham said: "There is a lot of passion and emotion connected to the Blues and Villa derby but it was great to see that the vast majority of supporters embraced the occasion and were well-behaved. "Unfortunately there was some disorder involving a number of the Birmingham fans straight after the game which saw missiles thrown at officers. This is completely unacceptable and we were fortunate no-one was seriously hurt.
"This delayed us opening the gates for Villa fans to leave the stadium for over an hour while we cleared the scene near the island. We will now be viewing camera footage in relation to this. I would like to thank the Villa supporters for their patience and co-operation during the hold back." A West Midlands Police statement read: "The Second City derby between Birmingham City and Aston Villa passed by without major disorder this afternoon. There was a highly visible presence of officers in and around St Andrew's as part of the force's policing plan for the fixture.

Football yob who punched Shrewsbury Town fan gets three-year match ban - 30/10/2017
Source: https://www.shropshirestar.com
A football hooligan who punched a Shrewsbury Town fan in the face after a match has been banned from attending games for three years.
Scott Walls was arrested following a scuffle between opposing fans from the two sides, in Oteley Road, in Shrewsbury, on September 9.
The incident happened after Shrewsbury Town’s game against Wigan earlier this year.
Wigan fan Walls admitted an offence of using threatening behaviour at an earlier hearing on October 16 at Telford Magistrates Court.
He was sentenced to a 12-month community order with a requirement to carry out 80 hours unpaid work in the community, as well as paying £135 costs and £85 victim’s surcharge as a result.
Miss Sarah Beddow, prosecuting, said: “Scott Walls is a Wigan supporter and he was attending the game between Shrewsbury Town and Wigan.
“He and some friends had been drinking during the day.
“Following the match he had been walking along Oteley Road.
“They crossed the footbridge near the health club and he and some of his friends became involved in a violent confrontation with Shrewsbury supporters.
“Mr Walls admitted punching an unknown male five times when he saw that male standing over another Wigan supporter.
“There was a scuffle. He said he did not know why he punched that male other than he was standing there.”
The court heard that the football banning order was not dealt with at the same time, he had instead been sentenced for a public order matter due to lack of time to complete the proceedings.
Walls, 30, did not attend the latest hearing, which considered making him subject to a football banning order that would prevent him from attending matches anywhere in the world, after his solicitor wrote a letter to the court asking whether the matter could be heard in his absence.
After hearing details of the incident, magistrates banned Walls, of Wigan, Lancashire, for a minimum period of three years under the Football Spectators Act 1989.
Shrewsbury Town beat rivals Wigan at Montgomery Waters Meadow on September 9 by one goal to nil.
The home side climbed to the top of League One after what had been an astonishing victory over the bookmakers’ favourites.

Chelsea supporters 'attacked' by masked Roma fans with metal bars in Irish pub ahead of Champions League clash
Eyewitnesses describe fans with poles outnumbering Chelsea fans - before police arrived and 'two Roma fans arrested as they ran off'
Chelsea fans were allegedly attacked by Roma supporters ahead of their Champions League meeting on Tuesday.
The two sides will face off in the Italian capital a fortnight after a five-goal thriller at Stamford Bridge.
Roma fans clashed with police ahead of that encounter and there were more violent scenes on Monday night.
According to Corriere dello Sport , a group of around 40 travelling Chelsea fans were drinking at The Shamrock pub near the Coliseum when they were approached by locals holding metal bars.
Italian police soon arrived at the scene and arrested two Roma supporters.
A bystander told The Sun: "It all kicked off around midnight just as the pub was about to close up.
"This group of Roma fans burst in wearing masks and sticks and attacked the Chelsea fans who were heavily outnumbered.
"It was chaos for a few minutes and then when police arrived the Roma fans ran off but they stopped two of them."
No serious injuries are believed to have been suffered.
As many as 2,000 Chelsea fans are expected to be in attendance for the group stage fixture.
British and Italian police are working together to prevent further trouble before and after the encounter.

Roma fans 'arrested after violent attack on Chelsea supporters' ahead of Champions League clash
* Two arrests have been made following an incident in Rome, reports say * Around 20 Roma fans attacked a bar housing Chelsea supporters * The Blues are in Italy for a Champions League group-stage encounter
Two Roma fans have been arrested after attacking their Chelsea counterparts in the Italian capital, according to reports.
The Sun says the arrests were made following a 'violent' incident at The Shamrock pub in Rome's city centre.
Around 20 ultras attacked Chelsea supporters in the bar after shooting fireworks into the air nearby, witnesses say.
The group allegedly wore masks and carried sticks but, despite ambulances being called, no serious injuries have been reported.
A bystander told The Sun: 'It all kicked off around midnight just as the pub was about to close up.
'It's popular with visiting fans as it has a football theme and is in the centre of town close to the Colosseum.
'This group of Roma fans burst in wearing masks and sticks and attacked the Chelsea fans who were heavily outnumbered.
'It was chaos for a few minutes and then when police arrived the Roma fans ran off but they stopped two of them.'
There have been concerns in the build-up to Tuesday's Champions League encounter between Roma and Chelsea that the event could be marred by hooligans.
Around 2,000 Blues supporters are expected in Italy for the game and, following some scenes of violence and disorder when Roma visited west London two weeks ago, police have been on high alert.

Manchester City fans banned from wearing belts in Napoli's San Paolo stadium
Manchester City fans have been banned from wearing belts to their club’s clash with Napoli. The club has told supporters with tickets travelling to Italy for the Napoli game on Wednesday that they won’t be allowed to wear belts of any description inside the San Paolo Stadium.
The ban is said to have been introduced by Napoli as an extra security measure, but comes on the back of an attack on City fans by Napoli supporters armed with belts after the game at the Etihad Stadium a fortnight ago. City have informed 1,200 fans who have purchased tickets for the Champions League group stage game.

One was seen with a weight attached to a rope and another was swinging a cosh. After arriving at the pub the group launched a ‘totally unprovoked attack’ on City supporters there, Manchester Crown Court heard. At least three people were injured.
One of those injured was a 17-year-old boy attending the game with his father, who was struck with the cosh and suffered a serious head injury. Napoli fan Gianluca Del-Prato, 25, was arrested at the scene and pleaded guilty to one count of affray. He was sent to prison for five months for his part in the violence.

Italian waiter suffers broken nose defending Manchester City fans from hooligans' revenge attack in Naples
An Italian waiter was injured defending Manchester City fans from attack in Naples on Tuesday night. Four City supporters were set upon by a group of local Ultras on leaving a restaurant in the Santa Lucia area – just close to the team hotel on the waterfront.
One fan ran and three sought refuge in a pizzeria and were followed in by the hooligans. The waiter attempted to protect them and suffered a broken nose. All four City fans suffered light injuries. The attack follows fear from local police that Napoli fans will seek revenge for an attack in a Manchester pub close to the Etihad Stadium before the first Champions League game a fortnight ago.
There will be 900 officers and 300 stewards on duty in the 60,000-capacity stadium tonight – and fans will be banned from wearing belts for fear they will again be used as weapons. It is a regular safety procedure for Ultras at the San Paolo but has not impressed City fans. Kevin Parke, secretary general of the Manchester City Supporters Club, told Il Mattino newspaper: “It is a ridiculous decision and absolutely crazy. I know that there were problems with Napoli fans in the first leg, who were using belts as weapons, but why should they now ban them for City fans? "It seems that in the Champions League there is always something happening with us. First it was forbidden to whistle (the Champions League anthem), then they banned us going in a stadium and they are stopping us wearing belts.”
There has been a strong police presence outside the City hotel since their arrival in the southern Italian city last night.
The restaurant and the staff did not want to be identified. One of the restaurant workers told Il Mattino: “We thought at first it was a robbery because it was all so quick and violent. They all came in running. Seats, plates and glasses went flying everywhere and the English were forced into a corner of the restaurant.
