Arrests After Croatian Football Officials Attacked - 14/04/2015

Hajduk Split hooligans said to have attacked officials, including national team coach.

Twelve football fans were arrested on Tuesday following an attack on Croatian Football Federation officials, including the national coach, at a motorway service station, police said.

A statement on the federation's website previously blamed the attack on Hajduk Split fans who "verbally and physically" attacked the delegation on Monday on the Zagreb to Split motorway.

The federation group included national team coach Niko Kovac and Executive Chairman Damir Vrbanovic, the former director of Dinamo Zagreb, Hajduk's arch-rivals. Four other officials were also attacked.

Kovac was the captain of the Croatian national team until his retirement in 2009. His club career was mostly spent in the German Bundesliga, including a spell with Bayern Munich.

Police said the suspects were arrested in Lika-Senj county, western Croatia.

In a statement, the county police said: "After leaving the restaurant, [the] attackers vandalized the car in which the delegation arrived." No-one was injured in the incident and the suspects are to be brought before a court dealing with lesser offenses, the statement added.

The federation said "dozen of Hajduk's hooligans" attacked the party, which was travelling to Split, on the Dalmatian coast, to make arrangements for a Euro 2016 qualifying game against Italy in June.

In a statement reported by Croatia Weekly, a Hajduk Split official expressed "deep regret for the unpleasant incident."

Football hooliganism has been a long-standing problem in Croatia, where some groups have fascist and racist elements. Last November, the Italian leg of June's fixture, held in Milan, was interrupted by flares thrown by Croatian fans, who later clashed with police.

Hajduk has previously complained to the federation about the lack of national games played in Split, Croatia's second city.
