England : Twenty football hooligans from notorious Suicide Squad jailed for 'mindless' brawl with rival fans at wake marking dead son's birthday - 28/04/2015
Source: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/
A gang of notorious football hooligans nicknamed the 'Suicide Squad' have been jailed after they attacked rival fans in a pub during a birthday celebration for a dead son. Around 30 violent supporters of Burnley FC used furniture and drinks glasses as weapons during the brawl with Sheffield Wednesday fans. A disabled man was injured in the fight and an 11-year-old boy was left with a head wound after the melée at the Burnley Miners' Club in January last year.
Now 20 thugs have been sentenced to prison for their role in the brawl, which took place after the two teams had drawn 1-1 in a Championship match at Burnley's Turf Moor ground. The hooligans were all apparently members of the Suicide Squad, a vicious gang which has previously been implicated in mass violence and even murder.
They chanted 'Su, Su, Su' during the attack, which left bar staff, young families and pensioners trapped in the bar. At Preston Crown Court, 19 men and one 17-year-old boy were jailed for between five and 22 months after being convicted of violent disorder, and were banned from from all football stadiums for up to 10 years.
The court heard that the fans from Sheffield had arranged to visit the Miners' Club after the match before returning to Yorkshire via minibus. One of the supporters organised the event to mark the birthday of their son, who had died the previous year. The violence began when the Suicide Squad managed to gain entry to the premises and pushed a Sheffield fan over, leading some of the victims to fight back with chairs and glasses. One police constable who was among the first on the scene described it as the 'most volatile incident' he had encountered in 10 years on the force.
Eventually police managed to force themselves between the two sets of fans, allowing the visitors from Sheffield to escape to their waiting bus. After the convictions of 21 hooligans, including one who was given a suspended sentence, Chris Bithell of Lancashire Police said: 'The behaviour of all those involved in the disorder was disgraceful and completely unacceptable. 'While the vast majority of those who attended the fixture behaved responsibly, it is entirely regrettable that a small number of people chose to act in such a mindless fashion after the match. 'Throughout our investigation we have worked closely with the public and Burnley FC in order to identify those involved and I would like to thank them for their support and assistance. 'The sentences serve as a warning to anyone who thinks they can engage in violent disorder at football fixtures and get away with it.' Fanatical and violent Burnley supporters have been known as the Suicide Squad since the early 1980s, thanks to their reckless behaviour in facing down huge groups of rival fans.
In the early years of the last decade, an even more extreme group called the 'Burnley Youth' emerged, whose members took on not only opposing supporters but also police officers. One member of the Burnley Youth, Andrew McNee, attacked and killed a Nottingham Forest fan in 2002 aged just 19, and was convicted of manslaughter. Burnley hooligans are also known for harbouring aggressive racist elements, who have planned attacks on the town's Asian community and took part in widespread race riots in 2001. Four years ago, 12 members of the Suicide Squad were jailed for their part in a fight against fans of local rivals Blackburn Rovers, which police described as being 'like something out of Braveheart'.
