England: Judge slams middle-aged football hooligans convicted of taking part in huge brawl between rival fans saying 'you are old enough to know better' - 20/02/2015
Source : http://www.dailymail.co.uk
A judge has slammed a group of middle-aged football hooligans who took part in a mass brawl, telling them 'you are old enough to know better'. Seven middle-aged men received suspended prison sentences and banning orders for their part in the violent scenes that erupted between rival supporters of Bristol City and Bristol Rovers. The match on September 4, 2013 - the first official clash between the city rivals in six years - saw fans clash inside and outside the ground. Mounted police were needed to clear fans from Bristol City's Ashton Gate pitch, while officers in riot gear and stewards had to separate fans in the stands.
As the men were sentenced at Bristol Crown Court, Judge Graham Hume Jones told them: 'Some of you are aged 40 to 56 and should know better than to behave like this. 'Incidents such as this damage the reputation of football nationally and the reputation of clubs.'
A court heard how running battles occurred between the rival fans outside Ashton Gate before the evening game. The Johnstone's Paint Trophy was the first time the two sides had met since 2007 and City won 2-1.
An aggressive atmosphere developed as around 200 home fans started congregating at a local pub three hours before the kick-off. A 500-strong group of Rovers fans then met around 500 metres away at another pub and riot police were sent to keep them apart. There was chanting, singing of songs anti to each other's clubs and swearing. A taxi pulled up outside the first pub with Rovers fans inside and was bombarded with glasses, bottles and bricks and mounted police and dog teams moved in. One officer was hit in the face with a pint glass and a second had a glass smashed over his helmet and visor. Prosecutor Sam Jones added: 'It was a very violent scene and an incredibly frightening scene for any member of the public passing by.' Three police lines were formed to keep fans apart and other officers were attacked as supporters tried to force their way through before police regained control. Then at the end of the match, Bristol City fans - dubbed the 'Cider Army' - invaded the pitch and police horses had to be deployed to clear the ground.
The oldest hooligan, aircraft fitter Stephen Maggs, 56, was banned from all football games in Britain for six years because of a previous three-year ban for football-related trouble. He was also given a 19-month suspended jail term. Those convicted also included Anthony Higginson, 56, of Bristol who was seen punching out at officers in 'pure anger and aggression'. He got a 16-month suspended sentence. Ricky Marsh, 54, from Bath, was seen 'flailing wildly' at police and hurling a glass at a taxi and was given a 16 month suspended sentence. Ian Brace, 46, of Bishopsworth, Bristol was seen swearing, waving his arms around and shouting at police. He was given a suspended prison sentence of 147 days. Craig Drew, 41, a window cleaner from Bristol, also got a suspended 147-day sentence for swinging several punches at police. Plasterer Chris Rogers, 34, from Stoke Gifford, Bristol, was seen hurling a metal drink can straight at mounted police and got a 23 month suspended sentence. James Phillips, a 26-year-old youth football club manager from Stoke Gifford, was seen to charge at police at least twice, his face 'contorted with anger'. He received a 21-month suspended sentence. There was also violence among Bristol Rovers fans when their side was relegated for the first time in 94 years after losing to Mansfield Town on May 3. There were pockets of disorder during and after the match at the Memorial Stadium in Filton and the pitch was invaded on the final whistle. A police horse was also punched by a hooligan supporter.

Greece Suspends All Professional Football After Incidents of Fan Violence - 25/02/2015
Source : http://bleacherreport.com/
Amid rampant violence in the Greek domestic football league, the country has decided to suspend all matches.
BBC Sport has the report:
The Greek government has suspended professional football in the country indefinitely in a crackdown on violence.
The move follows violence at a match between rivals Olympiakos and Panathinaikos, as well as a brawl between club officials at a board meeting on Tuesday.
The Greek league has already been suspended twice this season due to violence.
Olympiakos seems likely to be the biggest loser here, as they will likely be forced to forfeit the return leg of their Europa League draw against Dnipro after losing the the first leg, 2-0, in Kyiv.
Indeed, the entire season has been marked by controversy and violence. Fifty AEK fans recently stormed a town hall meeting, demanding new stadium construction be discussed and vandalizing the room and attacking folks in the meeting when they were told construction would be discussed the following week.
A referee was attacked in January by players who didn't agree with a call on the field. An Ethnikos supporter was killed after fighting broke out between Andrianos and Ethnikos fans in September. Former referee Christoforos Zografos was attacked by two men with clubs in November.
These are just a few of the incidents that have marred football in Greece this season, culminating with violence during the Athens Derby. It's hardly surprising then that the Greek government would step in an once again suspend play. For the number of supporters and players who have done nothing wrong, it is a harsh punishment, as once again the actions of a few will end up punishing the whole.

Police bracing for high-risk Feyenoord-Roma match - 25/02/2015
Source : http://www.kentucky.com/
Police in Rotterdam are tightening security and drafting in reinforcements ahead of a highly charged Europa League match between Feyenoord and Roma, a spokesman said Wednesday.
Feyenoord fans rioted in Rome before the first leg last week, clashing with police, damaging a recently renovated fountain and leaving part of the city's historic center strewn with beer cans and smashed bottles. The match ended in a 1-1 draw, setting up a tense return leg in Rotterdam on Thursday.
Fearing that visiting Roma fans may want to take revenge before the match, Rotterdam police spokesman Gijs van Nimwegen said officers will, if necessary, be given emergency powers to eject trouble-making fans from the city.
"We have known about this match for weeks and it already was considered a highest category risk," Van Nimwegen said.
After last week's riots, "we have increased the number of police involved from our original plans."
He said police estimate that about 2,700 Roma fans will travel to Rotterdam for the match at De Kuip Stadium and that about 10 percent of them could be potential trouble makers.
A small number of Italian police who know the Roma fans will also be on hand to help their Dutch counterparts identify possible hooligans.
Rotterdam Mayor Ahmed Aboutaleb is drafting an emergency order that police can invoke if hooligans begin rioting, giving police enhanced powers to detain fans and eject them from the city, Van Nimwegen said.
Roma fans will be gathered around the city's historic old port and kept segregated from Feyenoord fans. Busses will transport them to the stadium ahead of the match.
Meanwhile, Dutch authorities said Tuesday evening that they are supporting private fundraising initiatives aiming to help pay for the repair of the 400-year-old Fountain of the Barcaccia that was damaged last week in Rome.
The government and Rotterdam municipality are prepared to act as guarantors for repairs, but Aboutaleb said the hooligans responsible for the damage should ultimately be prosecuted and made to foot the bill.

Tottenham fans face booze ban ahead of their Europa League tie with Fiorentina - 25/02/2015
Source : http://www.dailymail.co.uk/
A strong police presence and 24-hour alcohol ban welcomes Tottenham fans ahead of the Europa League tie against Fiorentina. The last 32 tie is evenly poised at 1-1 ahead of a return leg for which the authorities in Florence are taking no chances after trouble flared up in the Italian capital. Issues arose ahead of last week's Europa League clash between Roma and Feyenoord, with 23 Dutch fans arrested as buildings were damaged and bottles thrown.
Perhaps influenced by that, Florentine officials have imposed a city-wide alcohol ban from midnight on Wednesday. Around 1,300 police officers are being deployed around the city centre and Stadio Artemio Franchi on Thursday, although Spurs head coach Mauricio Pochettino does not foresee any problems. 'Our fans are very respectful,' Pochettino said. 'In the few games before we've played before in the Europa League - in Cyprus, Serbia, Greece and Turkey - the behaviour of our supporters was great, was fantastic. 'There were no problems and I think tomorrow is another day to enjoy the game. Our supporters have much respect. 'I think it's maybe better to be careful, but our supporters, always in the past, the behaviour was fantastic. We need to expect the same tomorrow.'

Celtic fined by Uefa for Europa League fan disturbance - 25/02/2015
Source : http://www.dailymail.co.uk/
Celtic have been fined £7,300 by Uefa following crowd disturbances during their Europa League group stage match against Dinamo Zagreb. It is the fifth time in three years Celtic have been charged by Uefa over supporter behaviour. Fans clashed with police after fireworks were set off in the Celtic end of Stadion Maksimir as the Scottish champions lost 4-3 in Croatia. Despite that December defeat, Celtic qualified for the last 32. The fine - imposed by Uefa's control, ethics and disciplinary body - was announced as Celtic and their fans travelled to Italy for the Thursday's second leg against Inter Milan.
Reacting to the news, Celtic assistant manager John Collins stressed that it is "vitally important" that travelling supporters match what he suggested was the good behaviour displayed by home fans during the 3-3 first-leg draw in Glasgow. "We are obviously disappointed," he said. "We had 60,000 last week and it was unbelievable behaviour from every one of them, the atmosphere, and that is what Celtic is all about. "One or two are causing problems and hopefully that is the last we hear of it. "They are representing a wonderful football club and throughout the years the vast majority of them have been impeccably behaved and we have a great reputation throughout Europe. "One or two we have to try to weed out."

Steaua Bucharest punished by Uefa after racist behaviour by fans - 26/02/2015
Source : http://www.theguardian.com/
Uefa has punished Steaua Bucharest for racist behaviour by the Romanian champions’ fans for the third time this season.
Uefa announced that Steaua must play their next two home matches in the Champions League or Europa League in an empty stadium.
Steaua lead the Romanian league by seven points and could enter next season’s Champions League in the second qualifying round.
Uefa said Steaua fans showed a racist banner at a Europa League match against Dynamo Kiev at the National Stadium in Bucharest in December.
The club were fined €20,000 (£14,668), with other offences included. Steaua were previously fined €64,500 for racism and other offences in a Champions League playoff against Ludogorets Razgrad.
The first racist incidents were at a qualifying round match against the Norwegian side Stromsgodset.

A number of Roma fans have reportedly been detained in Rotterdam ahead of the Italian club’s Europa League round of 32 second leg against Feyenoord on Thursday.
The Dutch authorities have apparently pulled the Giallorossi supporters aside in order to conduct searches for illegal objects including weapons of any sort as tensions between the fans of the two sides have grown in recent days.
According to ANSA, 83 Roma fans arriving by bus from Amsterdam were detained across the road from the De Kuip stadium to carry out these checks, though the authorities are yet to issue any action against the visiting supporters.
Fabrizio Grassetti, president of the Roma Ultras, had reportedly been a part of a group of 100 other supporters who were approached to be searched as well.
“The Dutch police are rounding everyone up, out in the open and in the rain,” he said.
The Giallorossi must win their battle with Feyenoord if they hope to advance to the next round of the competition, with authorities set to remain on high alert to prevent any clashes between fans.

Inflatable banana thrown at Feyenoord-Roma game
Feyenoord's Europa League match against visitors Roma was suspended for more than 10 minutes after an inflatable banana was thrown towards the pitch. Several objects landed close to Roma's Ivory Coast striker Gervinho, who went on to score the winner in a 2-1 victory as the Italians progressed to the last 16 3-2 on aggregate. "It was right to suspend play," said Roma coach Rudi Garcia. "We could have opened a shop with all the objects thrown from the stands."

Feyenoord-Roma match temporarily halted as fans throw objects
The Europa League match between Feyenoord and Roma in Rotterdam, Netherlands, was halted for about 25 minutes after Mitchell te Vrede was sent off for the hosts.
Roma led 1-0 (2-1 on aggregate) in the 55th minute when Te Vrede was dismissed for a late challenge.
As the home fans threw objects on the pitch in protest, French referee Clement Turpin then stopped play and the players returned to their dressing rooms.
"It was only right they suspended play, as we could've opened a shop with all the objects that were thrown from the stands," Roma boss Rudi Garcia told Mediaset.
Two minutes after play resumed, Elvis Manu equalised for 10-man Feyenoord. As the home side celebrated that goal, Feyenoord reserve goalkeeper Erwin Mulder was also shown a red card following a touchline incident.
Gervinho then scored to restore Roma's lead and the Italian side advanced to the round of 16.
In the first half, a large inflatable banana was thrown on the pitch. Turpin spoke to Roma's black striker Gervinho and both managers but play continued at that point.
Feyenoord coach Fred Rutten said he did not believe racism was at play when the banana was thrown, saying, "There is such a fuss made about it. I don't see it that way. We have different nationalities in our team. It's nonsense. We make too much of it.''
But Rutten criticised Feyenoord fans for throwing objects onto the pitch.
"Those sorts of things only hurt Feyenoord,'' he said. "It's a shame it happened."
Earlier, Rotterdam police detained 17 locals and five Italians ahead of the match
Police spokesman Gijs van Nimwegen said the fans were held for a variety of offenses, including fighting, possession of fireworks, and not following police orders. He said two people were found to be carrying knives, but could not say what nationality they were.
"It has been very busy for the police," Van Nimwegen said. "We have put a lot of energy into stopping fights. ... If we had done nothing, there could have been a lot of fighting."
Police were bent on avoiding a repeat of last week's violence in Rome. Police on horseback led hundreds of Roma fans to Feyenoord's stadium for the late evening kickoff.
Feyenoord fans rioted in Rome before the round-of-32 first leg, clashing with police, damaging a recently renovated fountain, and leaving part of the city's historic center strewn with beer cans and smashed bottles. The match ended 1-1, setting up a tense return leg.
Police estimated about 2,700 Roma fans would travel to Rotterdam for the match at 50,000-seat De Kuip Stadium. A small number of Italian police who know the Roma fans were to be on hand to help their Dutch counterparts identify possible hooligans.
Van Nimwegen said 83 Roma fans were denied entry into Amsterdam, and when they arrived in Rotterdam in two buses they were taken to a police station near the stadium and then taken directly to the stadium.
Rotterdam mayor Ahmed Aboutaleb drafted an emergency order that police could invoke if hooligans begin rioting, giving police enhanced powers to detain fans and eject them from the city.
Roma fans gathered around the city's historic old harbor and were kept segregated from Feyenoord fans. Buses were to transport them to the stadium ahead of the match.
Dutch authorities have said they will support private fundraising initiatives aimed at helping to pay for the repair of the 400-year-old Fountain of the Barcaccia that was damaged last week in Rome.

Guingamp president calls Dynamo Kiev fans 'rabid dogs'
Guingamp president Bertrand Desplat has launched a scathing attacking on Dynamo Kiev's supporters after his side's Europa League match in the Ukraine was disrupted by violent scenes.
The away fans were forced to vacate the stadium after a group of masked home supporters fought their way past stewards in an attempt to clash with their French counterparts.
The incident resulted in the match being halted for almost a quarter of an hour while the players were holed up in the safety of their dressing rooms.
"I saw a stadium at war with rabid dogs that wanted to fight," Desplat told RMC.
"There were 11 heroes in Guingamp colours on the field because organising a match in these security conditions, when the safety of a certain group is not assured, is catastrophic for football.
"These are not fans, they are militiamen. Restarting play? How do you expect the players to focus on their game? It was extremely dangerous. This match could only have happened in Ukraine under these conditions."

Police on alert as Dutch fans plan to travel to Glasgow for Celtic clash with Aberdeen
POLICE will deploy "hooligan spotters" in Glasgow today over fears Dutch fans are planning to fly in for Celtic's match against Aberdeen.
Feyenoord supporters are understood to be planning a trip to the city at the weekend to attend the match.
Officers said they have "intelligence" from social media discussions between sections of the Celtic support and Dutch fans.
The Evening Times understands around 120 Feyenoord supporters plan to arrive in the city.
A police insider said: "We know about them and we're ready."
Police will have a specialist policing plan in place throughout the weekend.
A Police Scotland spokesman said: "We are aware of discussion on the internet in relation to a section of travelling supporters."
It comes days after some Feyenoord supporters became embroiled in a racism row during their side's Europa League match against Roma.
The referee was forced to stop the match twice over the incidents during Thursday's game.
Officers arrested more than a dozen Dutch nationals and five Italians before the match.

Rotherham United - Millwall FC - 28/02/2015
Source : http://www.thestar.co.uk/
Riot police intervene as Millwall fans try to invade home ends at Rotherham game
The Millers won the Championship relegation battle 2-1, with ugly scenes in the away end at the New York Stadium.
Irate visiting supporters tried to invade the home areas after Rotherham scored their second goal in the 85th minute, with riot police forced to intervene.
Three police officers and two stewards suffered minor injuries during the trouble.
Trouble was also reported outside the ground after the game had finished.
A large number of riot vans were also deployed to Sheffield railway station after the game, as Millwall fans caught connecting trains to London.
Dramatic video footage from the game showed Millwall fans trying to get into two separate home areas of the ground, as well as a small section of their supporters picking up a large metal barrier and using it during clashes with police and stewards.
No arrests have been made but police are to start an investigation and say they have ‘comprehensive evidence including detailed CCTV footage’.
South Yorkshire Police said ‘fans of both clubs played a part’ in the disorder.
Chief Superintendent Jason Harwin said: “Officers have worked with both clubs prior to today’s game in an attempt to prevent such unacceptable behaviour.
“Again we see a minority of individuals spoil the event for many others. They aren’t a true representation of genuine football supporters and have no place in football. Such action can not be tolerated
“I thank the bravery and courage of stewards and police officers in tackling such criminal acts and we will now review evidence to identify and bring to justice those that are responsible for such criminal acts.”
After the match, Millwall manager Ian Holloway said he was concentrating on the game and did not see the trouble from Millwall fans in the away end.
He asked reporters what he was supposed to do about it after Rotherham fans complained at him about the trouble.
He said: “I didn’t see it, I was concentrating on my job and I felt I acted with dignity from start to finish.
“So the Rotherham fans who were shouting at me about that, what do they want me to do, I am a football manager. We’ll have to wait and see on that.”
More than 10,000 people attended the game at the New York Stadium, including over 1,300 Millwall fans.
