Three fans arrested during and following Boro’s clash with Leeds United
Three fans were arrested during and following Boro’s clash with Leeds United, but a heavy police presence prevented major trouble between fans.
There were two arrests during the game and one after the final whistle.
A 39-year-old man was arrested in connection with an offence involving a flare being lighted, a 29-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of being drunk in a designated sports ground, and a 37-year-old man was arrested following the game on suspicion of a public order offence. All three remain in police custody.
But a heavy police presence in and around the Riverside Stadium before, during and after the match managed to prevent any major disturbances.
Leeds fans who had travelled to Middlesbrough by train were escorted to and from the Riverside Stadium by police officers on the ground.
Cleveland Police’s helicopter hovered overhead for the duration of the match and following the crowds into Middlesbrough town centre afterwards.
Following the match, which ended with Boro losing 1-0 to Leeds, police officers with video cameras filmed the supporters of each team which were chanting towards each other while separated by steel fencing.
During the pre-match build-up, Cleveland Police had put out a message on social media that read: “Not long now folks until Boro vs Leeds. Cops enjoying a vibrant, positive atmosphere from home and away fans outside the ground. Enjoy the game!”
Afterwards Cleveland Police thanked home and away fans and a police spokeswoman said: “Officers on the ground enjoyed a vibrant and positive atmosphere, which was in keeping with the family friendly approach taken by Cleveland Police and Middlesbrough Football Club.”
Commenting on the positive response from fans, operational commander, supterintendent Mark Thornton said: “The majority of fans have been fantastic today and have worked with us to ensure that the match goes ahead safely and that the focus was on football, not disorder.
“We police football based on the intelligence we receive, and our response today was proportionate. I’m extremely proud of all involved, especially officers on the ground who have been engaging with fans from early this morning.
“I would like to thank Middlesbrough Football Club for their ongoing support, and Leeds United Football Club and fans for their co-operation.”
Police and Crime Commissioner Barry Coppinger spent the day with officers to see the scale and scope of the policing operation around today’s match.

Trouble blights Rio derby with more than 100 arrests
Brazilian football was hit with more violence on Sunday when police arrested more than 100 fans before the Vasco da Gama-Fluminense match, including many Vasco fans police said were fighting amongst themselves. "The first trouble was something we're used to seeing, fights between fans of Vasco and fans of Fluminense," police commander Lt. Col. Joao Guimaraes told Globo News TV. "The second fight was a new phenomenon in Brazilian football, fights between fans of the same team. "None of them are worried about football and none of them are worried about being Vascainos," Guimaraes added, using the name given to Vasco fans. "They don't care about their club." Guimaraes said the first trouble came when fans of rival teams fought outside the recently re-opened Nilton Santos stadium that will be used to host athletics events in next year's Olympic Games. Further trouble took place as police guided two groups of rival Vasco fans towards different parts of the ground.

Chelsea fans allegedly involved in Paris Métro racist incident identified - 22/02/2015
Source : http://www.theguardian.com
Metropolitan police say they have spoken to three men about incident on Paris Métro and are liaising with French authorities
Three men sought in connection with an alleged racist incident involving Chelsea football fans on a Paris Métro train have been identified.
A Metropolitan police spokesman said the force had spoken to the men and was liaising with the French authorities.
None of the men sought by Scotland Yard has been arrested as the force cannot detain people over alleged offences outside the UK. If brought to trial in France, the suspects could face a three-year prison sentence and €45,000 (£33,300) fine.
Brendon Batson, a Professional Footballers’ Association trustee, has called for assault charges to be brought against the men.
“This guy on the Paris Métro was assaulted, he was pushed violently a couple of times, and I think if there are any criminal laws to be enforced then that should be done as well,” he told BBC Radio 5’s Sportsweek programme.
“I think there’s a totally different behaviour [when fans go abroad] because they know they can’t get away with it over here, that’s for sure.”
Scotland Yard released images of the men they believed they were among a group of supporters who allegedly pushed a black man called Souleymane, preventing him from boarding a train while chanting: “We’re racist and that’s the way we like it.”
The club has reiterated its promise to ban for life anyone proved to have been involved in the incident and is helping police in the UK and Paris. The Chelsea manager, José Mourinho, said the club was appalled by the racial abuse, and that its owner, Roman Abramovich, was also disgusted.
The Met police had appealed for the public’s help in identifying the trio after releasing images taken at Richelieu-Drouot Métro station on 17 February. The incident, which occurred ahead of Chelsea’s Champions League game against Paris St Germain, was captured in mobile phone footage and sent to the Guardian.
Chelsea has suspended five supporters from attending matches after conducting its own investigations. Mourinho said the club would be writing to Souleymane to apologise and invite him to attend the return game against the French champions on 11 March.
Souleymane told the French newspaper Le Parisien: “I appreciate Mr Mourinho’s invitation, but I can’t get my head around being in a stadium at the moment.”
In an interview with the Guardian, Souleymane said: “What happened has left me really afraid. I just want justice to be done, no more than that. I was a little bit hurt physically but in terms of morale I was hurt a lot. It has really affected my life. I can’t go back into the Métro, it makes me really afraid.
The former England defender Rio Ferdinand said the Fifa and Uefa football authorities had “let football down” by failing to eradicate racism.
He wrote on Twitter on Saturday that complacency had allowed racism to prevail and reiterated those comments in a column for the Sun on Sunday.
He also wrote, however: “To be fair to the (Football Association), they have done more than most to try to eradicate racism from the stands. We are the standard-bearers. It’s not like going to parts of eastern Europe when you would be thinking to yourself ‘what are we going to get here?’ Even those people who are racists here tend to go into a stadium and turn the mute button on for 90 minutes.”

Brighton confirm fan arrested for racist chanting during home 4-3 win against Birmingham at the Amex Stadium
Championship side Brighton have confirmed reports two fans were arrested for racist chanting and throwing a smoke bomb, which overshadowed an enthralling 4-3 win over Birmingham on Saturday. The club's website released a statement confirming both arrests occurred during the match at the Amex Stadium, with the racist chanting suspected to be from a Seagulls fan. While the smoke bomb was allegedly thrown by an away fan during Birmingham's defeat to Chris Hughton's side, which moved the Seagulls three points clear of relegation.
'Brighton & Hove Albion can confirm two arrests were made at yesterday's match against Birmingham City: one on suspicion of use of racist language, in relation to an historic offence; and one for throwing a smoke bomb onto the pitch from the away end,' said the club's statement. 'The arrest on suspicion of use of racist language was made after a complaint and subsequent statement was made to the club on Saturday morning that racist language was used prior to a previous home match, by an individual watching a televised match in the stadium concourse. 'The suspect was identified by the club's CCTV staff and stewards, before being ejected from the stadium and handed over to Sussex Police.
'The club has a zero tolerance approach on all forms of discrimination and fans found guilty of such offences at home matches, away matches, when travelling to and from our fixtures or any club event, can expect a lengthy or indefinite ban from all Albion fixtures. Chief executive Paul Barber had his say on the matter: 'We pride ourselves on welcoming everyone at Brighton & Hove Albion and we simply will not tolerate any kind of xenophobic behaviour. 'We expect our fans to conduct themselves in a manner befitting to our club - and I am pleased that the vast majority are a credit to us,' added Barber.
'I applaud the supporter who came forward to report the incident, and would encourage any fan witnessing this type of behaviour to do likewise. Supporters can rest assured their information will be treated with the utmost discretion, that we will fully investigate all complaints of this nature and we will act accordingly. 'I also applaud our safety and stewarding team for the swift actions, following yesterday's complaint, in identifying the suspected individual; they will continue to assist Sussex Police in their investigation.'
Blues fan arrested for throwing smoke bomb on pitch during 4-3 defeat
A BIRMINGHAM City fan was arrested at the Brighton away match for allegedly throwing a smoke bomb onto the pitch.
And in the second race incident to hit football in the space of a week a home fan was also arrested for alleged racist chanting.
Chief Inspector Simon Nelson, of Sussex police, confirmed a man arrested for racist chanting was believed be a Seagulls fan.
A Blues fan was also arrested at the Amex Stadium on Saturday for allegedly throwing a the smoke bomb onto the playing surface during the team’s 4 - 3 Championship defeat.
CI Nelson tweeted: “two arrests for racist chanting and throwing a smoke bomb onto the pitch. 20k+ safe & lawful fans.”
It has been a terrible week for football and racism. The news comes just days after a minority of Chelsea fans came under fire for racist chanting in Paris.
A group of men appeared to stop a black man from entering the train ahead of their Champions League clash with PSG on Tuesday on the Paris Metro.
Police are also investigating racist chanting at St Pancras station by men thought to be Chelsea fans returning from a Champions League match in Paris.
The chanting in London happened on Wednesday evening, the day after the club’s 1-1 draw with Paris St-Germain.
Chelsea FC has already barred five fans from attending Stamford Bridge following the earlier incident.

Ex-police officer denies involvement with Chelsea fans accused of racism - 22/02/2015
Source : http://www.telegraph.co.uk/
A former RUC police officer has denied he is a racist after detectives investigating racial offences by Chelsea fans in Paris issued an appeal for him to come forward
A former policeman who is one of three men sought in connection with an alleged racist incident involving Chelsea football fans on a Paris Metro train has apologised for his involvement. But Richard Barklie, 50, insisted he is not a racist. The ex-Royal Ulster Constabulary (RUC) and Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) officer, from Carrickfergus, Northern Ireland, is currently a director with a human rights organisation - the World Human Rights Forum - and has also worked supporting victims of the Troubles. The Chelsea season ticket holder is one of the three men whose images were released by Scotland Yard as part of an investigation into a group of supporters who allegedly pushed a black man off the train and chanted a racist song in the French capital on Tuesday. The incident happened ahead of Chelsea's Champions League clash with Paris Saint-Germain, which ended 1-1.
Footage posted online showed the commuter - named in reports as Souleymane S - being pushed back on to the platform amid chants of ''we're racist, we're racist and that's the way we like it''. Mr Barklie issued a statement through his lawyer in which he admitted involvement in an ''incident'' that resulted in Souleymane S being ''unable to enter part of the train''. He said he had an account he wanted to provide to police that would explain the ''context and circumstances''. Mr Barklie denied singing any racist songs; said he travelled to the game alone; insisted he did not know any of the other individuals captured on video footage of the incident; and said he has never been part of any ''group or faction'' of Chelsea fans. The statement was issued by Belfast solicitor Kevin Winters. ''We act on behalf of Mr Barklie identified as one of the people sought by authorities investigating an incident on the Paris Metro on 16/2/15 ,'' it said. ''We contacted London Metropolitan Police today to advise that our client is happy to assist with inquiries. ''Pending formal engagement with police, our client is anxious to put on record his total abhorrence for racism and any activity associated with it. ''As someone who has spent years working with disadvantaged communities in Africa and India he can point to a cv in human rights work which undermines any suggestion he is racist. ''Today a senior official in the World Human Rights Forum confirmed their support for him. ''Mr Barklie is a Chelsea season ticket holder and has travelled to matches for over 20 years now without incident ''He travelled alone to the Paris St Germain match and has no knowledge whatsoever of the identities of the other people depicted in recent YouTube video releases. He wants to stress that he was not and never has been part of any group or faction of Chelsea supporters. ''He did not participate in racist chanting and singing and condemns any behaviour supporting that. ''He accepts he was involved in an incident when a person now known to him as Souleymane S was unable to enter a part of the train. ''He has an account to give to police which will explain the context and circumstances as they prevailed at that particular time. ''In the meantime pending that, he wants to put on record his sincerest apologies for the trauma and stress suffered by Mr Souleymane. ''He readily acknowledges that any judgement on the integrity of his apology will be kept in abeyance pending the outworkings of the investigation. ''Given the extremely sensitive nature of the issues engaged we urge upon all media outlets to exercise as much restraint as possible when commenting on the case. ''We accept on behalf of our client that public interest demands nothing but total indignation and condemnation from all media reporting but such reporting ought not to persist at the expense of undermining Mr Barklie's right to a fair trial ''Tonight London Met confirmed with us that arrangements were in hand to take the investigation to the next stage.'' The WAVE Trauma Centre, which supports victims of the Northern Ireland Troubles, tonight said it had suspended a part-time worker pending further investigation into the Paris incident. ''As this matter is subject to an investigation by the Metropolitan Police it would not be appropriate to comment further at this stage,'' said a spokesman for the charity. A Metropolitan Police spokesman said the three men had now been identified and the force was liaising with the French authorities. None of the men sought by Scotland Yard have been arrested. A police spokesman said the force cannot arrest people for offences which happen outside the UK but ''a number of people'' have now been spoken to in relation to the incident. Five people have so far been suspended from Chelsea's Stamford Bridge ground following investigations into the incident. The club has reiterated its promise to ban for life anyone proved to have been involved in the altercation and is helping police in the UK and Paris. Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho said the club are ''appalled'' by the racial abuse, adding that owner Roman Abramovich is also ''disgusted''. Meanwhile, police are seeking a gang of men, believed to be Chelsea fans, who were heard shouting racist chants at London St Pancras station on Wednesday evening. A member of the public reported the men, who had travelled by train from Paris Gare du Nord, British Transport Police (BTP) said. It is believed they were returning home after attending Chelsea's match with PSG. ♦ Meanwhile BTP officers have contacted a man who posted a video online apparently showing West Ham fans chanting an antisemitic song on a train, urging him to contact detectives with more information.
