UK: Football fans in court after brawl - 09/10/2011
Source : Doncasterfreepress.co.uk
A TRIO of football fans from the Dearne area have been sentenced for their part in a brawl with rival supporters after a match in London.
Ben Pankovics, 20, John Sheridan, 21, and Ian McAlister, 23, were among a group of eight men who travelled to Wembley last May to watch Rotherham United take on Dagenham & Redbridge in the League Two play-off final.
After watching the Millers’ lose 3-2, they boarded a train at Baker Street station heading towards King’s Cross.
During the journey, the group became rowdy and started chanting loudly.
As the train arrived into King’s Cross, a fight broke out between the group and other supporters which spilled out onto the platform.
During the brawl, bottles were thrown at the train and the men threatened passengers on the train with violence.
British Transport Police investigated and eight men were identified and arrested using CCTV footage of the incident.
Details of the incident were revealed when the men appeared at Blackfriars Crown Court for sentencing last month.
Pankovics, of Cowper Road, Mexborough, pleaded guilty to a public order offence and received 100 hours community service and was ordered to pay £200 costs.
Sheridan, of Cliff Way, Denaby, pleaded guilty to affray and received four months imprisonment suspended for 12 months. He was also ordered to complete 100 hours community service and pay £200 costs.
McAlister, of Moordale View, Rawmarsh, admitted a public order offence and received 100 hours community service and was ordered to pay £200 costs.
Five other men received varying sentences, and two of them - Craig Rockett, 33, of Pepper Close, Rotherham and John Vernon, 26, of Badsley Moor Lane, Rotherham - were banned from attending football matches in England and Wales for three years.
The investigating officer Detective Sergeant Ant Jones said: “This was unnecessary violence which caused a great deal of distress and fear for those passengers who were simply travelling on the Tube and were unfortunate to run into these men. The behaviour of individuals such as these only serves to ruin a good day of sport.”

Indonesia vs Qatar - 10/10/2011
Source : The Jakarta Post
Fans with fireworks will be expelled from stadium
Ahead of Indonesia's World Cup qualifying match against Qatar at Gelora Bung Karno Stadium next Tuesday, the Jakarta Police have vowed to throw out any supporters in possession of fireworks. “We will expel them by force,” City Police bureau operations head Sr. Comr. Sujarno said Sunday, as quoted by tempointeraktif.com. Snack and drinks vendors will also be banned from entering the stadium, he added. “Even sponsors whose sell bottled products will not be allowed into the stadium,” he said. He added that the police would dispatch 2,600 policemen from the Jakarta Police and the Central Jakarta Police to the stadium. The police will be looking to avoid a repeat of the embarrassing circumstances that marred Indonesia's previous home game, when the match was stopped before time because Indonesian fans were setting off fireworks in the stands and throwing them on to the pitch.

Russia: Police detain 100 on Manezh Square - 08/10/2011
Source : The Moscow News
Moscow police have detained numerous people on Manezh Square on Saturday for attempts to hold an unauthorized nationalist rally over the alleged murder of a teenage CSKA fan by an Azerbaijan-born man in a fight. More than 10 busses with OMON riot police arrived on the square in central Moscow on Saturday morning. Regular police were also patrolling the square. Entry to both the square and Okhotny Ryad shopping center were not blocked, however. Youth round-up The rally was originally planned for the afternoon, but any groups of young men that appeared were quickly corralled by the police and taken to awaiting busses. Policemen approached everyone who looked like young nationalists and checked their documents and bags. Queues of youngsters dressed in trainers, sweatpants and hoodies soon formed by the busses.
Hundred detained
In the evening police reported that 98 people were detained, taken to the police station for “prophylactics talks” and were checked for relations with nationalist movements before they were let go. Police also confiscated flares, smoke bombs, non-lethal pistols and metal rods. However, out of 98 detained, only one charge was laid for minor disorderly conduct. Fan’s murder Podolsk resident and CSKA fan Andrei Uryupin, 18, was killed and his friend was injured in a fight with Azerbaijan-born Khosruvlo Nail outside of a nightclub on Oct. 2. Nail, 20, was charged with murder and attempted murder of two people, but has fled and has been put on an international wanted list. After Uryupin’s death football fans and ultra-right nationalists called for a new “Manezh Square” on Oct. 8.
Manezh riots
Manezh Square became a setting for a 5,000-strong nationalist riot on Dec. 11, 2010, when a vigil for murdered Spartak fan Yegor Sviridov was hijacked by nationalists. “A repeat of events on Manezh is still possible,” Sova analytical center expert Maria Rozalskaya told Kommersant. “But for this to happen there has to be a significant reason. Nationalists have not yet found any reasons to gather in such numbers.”

Switzerland set to get tough on hooligans - 10/10/2011
Source : Thelocal.ch
Swiss authorities are preparing to implement tough measures to prevent violence among hooligans from rival football teams.
In an interview with newspaper Der Sonntag, Matthias Remund, director of the Federal Office of Sports said authorities will tighten the screws on hooligans. He said it is especially important to know who is in the stadium, and proposed three measures: prohibiting fireworks at games; banning flags, so hooligans cannot cover their faces; and introducing tickets with integrated electronic identity codes.
“It is sad to think that in the future it will be necessary to come to the stadium two hours before the game, as it is at airports,” Remund said.
The measures will be discussed this week during the conference of cantonal justice and police directors (CDJP).
Hooliganism has been a long-standing problem in Switzerland, but the violence that broke out during the October 2nd derby game between Grasshoper FC and FC Zurich was the final straw. It was the first time in the history of Swiss football that a professional match was abandoned due to rioting.
Zurich authorities are already considering the introduction of electronic bracelets for fans banned from stadiums, the canton’s chief of justice, Martin Graf, told newspaper NZZ am Sonntag. The devices will send out a radio signal when the bearer enters a defined perimeter.
The Grasshopper FC-Zurich FC game was first stopped after fans threw firecrackers, but restarted a few minutes later. The referee finally decided to end the game after 77 minutes due to continued unrest with hosts Grasshopper leading 2-1.

Brazil: Palmeiras fans attack own player - 12/10/2011
Source : Foxnews.com
A group of fans upset with Palmeiras' poor results attacked one of its players outside the team's stadium, leading the Brazilian club to postpone Wednesday's league game against Flamengo. Brazilian police said supporters of one of the team's organized fan groups punched and kicked reserve midfielder Joao Vitor after he was recognized arriving at the team's official store outside the Palestra Italia stadium on Tuesday. Joao Vitor sustained minor injuries and had to visit hospital briefly. Palmeiras lawyer Andre Sica told local television the fans confronted Joao Vitor over the team's recent results and the verbal altercation escalated into a physical confrontation. The 22-year-old player was with friends, who also got involved in the fight before police intervened with no arrests made. Joao Vitor, who regularly comes off the substitutes bench, was not originally scheduled to travel with Palmeiras because of an injury. Organized fan groups in Brazil are known for being violent and are often involved in confrontations with police and rival groups. Palmeiras players and fans have a history of getting into disputes as former Brazil striker Vagner Love left the club after receiving threats.

Six-year ban for Dutch football hooligans - 13/10/2011
Source : AFP
Dutch football federation chiefs have handed six-year stadium bans to 17 supporters found guilty of causing disturbances in Rotterdam, the KNVB announced on Thursday. The 17 accused, who are also the subject of criminal proceedings, started a riot in front of Feyenoord's De Kuip stadium prior to the match against Dutch league rivals De Graafschap. Around 1000 fans had congregated at the stadium to protest some of the club's policies, and after some had tried to break into club offices several cars were vandalised. Anti-riot police were called in and proceeded to fire warning shots into the air in an attempt to disperse the crowd. Four people were arrested on the spot. The KNVB said more supporters could be sanctioned.

Cyprus: Football hooligans found guilty - 13/10/2011
Source : Cyprus Mail
TWO men faced jail time yesterday after they were found guilty of seriously injuring three other men during football-related violence in Nicosia over three years ago. The two were part of around 20 Omonia supporters who attacked the fan clubhouse of archrivals APOEL in April 2008. The incident came in retaliation to an attack against the Omonia fan clubhouse the previous day. The defendants, in their mid-twenties, were found guilty by the Nicosia district court of causing actual and grievous bodily harm to three APOEL supporters present at the club at the time, as well as for attempting to torch the building. The most seriously injured of the three APOEL supporters had suffered a blow to his left eye, causing permanent damage to his sight. The two will remain in custody until next Wednesday when their lawyers argue for leniency. Although the charges carry longer jail terms, the district court can only impose a maximum of five years. A third defendant was acquitted of all serious charges after the prosecution failed to prove he had been present during the incident. Over 100 supporters from both teams assembled outside the courthouse during the hearing and remained there for quite some time after it was over. Despite the tense standoff and some verbal exchanges and taunts the fans dispersed peacefully with the help of the police.

Two Bayern fans stabbed in Naples
Two Bayern Munich fans were stabbed in Naples on Monday night ahead of Tuesday's Champions League clash between Napoli and the German team, Italian news agency Ansa reported.
The two men, aged 42 and 47, suffered slight injuries and were taken to the Loreto Mare hospital in the city.
According to witnesses, the men were walking along a road heading towards the main square in the city Piazza Garibaldi when some men on a pair of motorbikes pulled up alongside them and stabbed them in the shoulders with a knife.
It is not the first time this kind of attack has happened in Naples, or even in Italy.
Last year several Liverpool fans were stabbed the night before a Europa League tie in this city while Rome has also had a history of such violence ahead of Champions League games, notably against visiting English teams but also a Real Madrid fan was stabbed in the thigh a few years a go.

Manchester City investigate collapse of fan after fracas with stewards
• Footage on YouTube shows fan collapsing after confrontation • Club says fan had been persistently standing
Manchester City plan to speak to a fan whose collapse, following a confrontation with stewards and police, has caused fury after footage of the incident was posted on YouTube.
In the footage, taken during the 4-1 victory over Aston Villa at the Etihad Stadium, the fan, who had allegedly been persistently standing, initially refuses to leave his seat. As other fans tell stewards to leave him alone, he is heard telling stewards that he is on medication for a heart condition. After he is eventually lifted out of his seat, he appears to collapse to the ground.
"He was stood up like every other person in that section," Steven Brown, a fan sitting nearby, told the Manchester Evening News. "I heard everything and he never swore at them. Before the police came he sat down. One of the stewards climbed over three rows to grab him. He was confrontational and that started getting people's backs up.
"The man started holding his chest and collapsed to the floor. That's when police radioed for paramedics to come and help him. After that they took him out on to the concourse and sent him on his way. It wasn't needed. There were 2,500 standing up and they picked him out."
On Monday the unofficial club website MCFCfans called for an investigation into the incident, which they said showed "the apparent singling out of an older, apparently vulnerable, City fan".
The area where the incident took place – Block 109 – is near the away fans, and recognised as one of the loudest areas of the ground. Manchester police said the fan was arrested for a suspected breach of the peace, but then de-arrested.
