Teenage hooligans clash on Derby County's away day in Bristol
MEMBERS of a Derby football youth gang are being hunted by police after violence erupted in Bristol. Police say 16 teenagers from the Derby Youth Connection travelled on trains for the Rams' game with Bristol City on Saturday. The group were described as being "very vocal", chanting "DYC" as they walked towards the city centre. They then got involved in a fight with a group of older men at about 3.30pm. Football intelligence officer PC Paul Russell said: "We believe this was a chance meeting and not something that had been arranged. We are investigating and will hopefully be reviewing CCTV to try and identify those involved." Saturday's incident comes as police revealed plans to ban schoolboy troublemakers from football matches due to what they say is an increase in the number of young hooligans following Derby County. The Derby Youth Connection has been involved in fights, drink-related disorder and intimidating opposing supporters at Rams games. Officers have also been attacked and police are concerned that more youths, some as young as 15, are becoming involved with the group. Police are planning to introduce several measures, including banning them from all professional matches in England and Wales and from following the England national team. PC Allan Guy, another football intelligence officer, said: "They need to know that if they like Derby County and watching the Rams they need to stay away from these groups. "We have already looked at anti-social behaviour orders for some of the older lads and we will look at banning orders, too, if we have to. With some of the younger ones, we've visited parents in the past and it's been very effective and we'll look to do that again first. "If these youths bump into the wrong group, they could suffer serious injuries." He said there were 34 football banning orders active in the county. These have been used to ban yobs from football matches for up to three years. Another tool used by officers to reduce youth hooliganism are acceptable behaviour contracts. These are signed by youngsters and their parents and include terms to get them to change their behaviour. PC Russell said 10 contracts were now being reviewed and officers were looking at introducing a further 10. Before last year's Premiership campaign, officers visited the homes of around 20 youths who they felt were in danger of getting involved in the DYC. PC Guy said that last September, as many as 60 young hooligans were turning out for some home fixtures. But that number has grown to up to 100 and police had noticed that groups from areas including Hilton, Long Eaton, Alfreton and Ilkeston were appearing. PC Guy added: "We won't consider Asbos and banning orders straight away. Our priority is to try and push them away from the trouble first."

| Football hooligans targeted by police - 19/08/2008
Source : Gloucestershire Gazette
POLICE have said they are ready to blow the whistle on football-related disruption.
With the new football season underway, police have warned they are not prepared to tolerate anti-social behaviour or any form of football-related hooliganism.
Last season 163 people were arrested during games involving Bristol City, Bristol Rovers and Yeovil Town. This was an increase on the 137 people arrested the previous year.
More than 50 hooligans now have football banning orders in the Avon and Somerset force area.
Roger Thayer, Avon and Somerset Police's football intelligence desk officer, said: "As a result of the arrests 14 received football banning orders, which prevents their attendance at any regulated football match for a period of between three and five years, if not subjected to a custodial sentence. "For those who were imprisoned the banning order extends to a period of between six and 10 years. One person sentenced to a four-month prison term received a six-year football banning order."
In addition, nine summonses were served on fans identified by intelligence as being involved in football disorder and seven football banning orders were granted by magistrates.
The duration of these orders will run between three and five years. Police have now pledged to continue this robust policy of taking a tough line with those involved in football-related hooliganism into this season.
Supt Adrian Coombs, who oversees the football operation for the force, said: "In Avon and Somerset we work closely with police colleagues across the country to identify and build intelligence profiles on known 'risk' supporters and those on the fringes.
"This, together with partnership work with our local football league clubs, enables us to target those intent on disrupting games or causing problems in the community before and after games.
"This enables us to create a safe and enjoyable environment for families visiting games in Avon and Somerset.
"The message from Avon and Somerset police is enjoy your football at our three league clubs but if your intention is to try to disrupt games or spoil the enjoyment for genuine fans, you are likely to end up with a football banning order."

| Conte: Italian Hooligans Are Shameful! - 20/08/2008
Source : Goal.com
Former Juventus star, and current Bari coach, has slammed the hooligans who attacked him in his hometown of Lecce.
Conte was relaxing on a beach near his hometown of Lecce on Sunday where he took part in a five-a-side match, before a number of local thugs attacked him, accusing him of being a traitor for coaching rivals Bari.
“As soon as I finished a five-a-side match, which was a memorial for my cousin who died in a car crash a few years back, seven or eight men walked on to the field and came straight at me,” Conte told La Gazzetta dello Sport.
“They were holding sticks and metal bars. They tried to hit me, but fortunately didn’t manage it. They were wearing T-Shirts with ‘I Hate Bari’ and even chased after my brother, Gianluca. Thankfully they were scared off by a police car and a few of our friends.
“Physically I am fine, but psychologically I am hurting badly. I am furious at this incredibly serious incident. It happened in front of my wife, my nine-month-old baby and many other children who were at the game.
“I never imagined someone could organise an ambush in my home city. It’s shameful!
“Lecce is my city. My family lives here. I just hope this incident can shock people into realising how ridiculous that attitude is and that those responsible do not get away with it.”
The image of Italian football has been badly tarnished in recent years by scandals both on-and-off the pitch, and hooliganism is a serious problem that the authorities are struggling to stamp out in view of this latest incident.
Conte played for Lecce from 1985 to 1992, but his best known for his spell at Juventus from 1992 to 2004 where he won virtually every honour in the club game, including five Scudetti, a Champions League, UEFA Cup, and a Intercontinental Cup.

| Clarets football hooligans breached banning orders - 21/08/2008
Source : Lancashire Telegraph
TWO convicted Burnley football hooligans have been brought before the courts after breaching banning orders.
Nicholas Whittle, 48, and Paul McLaughlan, 21, both failed to sign on at police stations during Clarets matches recently.
And police yesterday arrested Michael Lewis, 45, from Nelson, for allegedly breaching a 10-year football banning order by failing to report to police before Burnley’s game against Ipswich.
Whittle, of Pennine Road, Bacup, had signed on for the Clarets’ games against Queen of the South and Patrick Thistle, Rossen-dale Magistrates’ Court was told.
But he claimed he faced a family crisis when it came to the third game, on July 23, against St Johnstone, the court heard.
He was given a six-year ban from the nation’s football grounds after being involved in two separate football-related violent episodes in Man-chester and Burnley in 2004.
He was jailed for 10 months for violent dis-order at Manchester Crown Court, where he was dealt with alongside five other Burnley football fans, who also received bans and either short jail terms or community service.
Kath Symes, defending, said her client had been asked to pick up a nephew from Blackpool, on the day in question.
He had returned with the boy and then fell asleep. When he got up later his girlfriend reminded him about his signing-on appointment.
But he missed a bus from Bacup to Rawtenstall, where he had to attend the police station, and found that Bacup Police Station was also closed.
The solicitor said she had some sympathy with Whittle’s case as he had made no attempt to attend the game and had no intention of breaching the order.“It seems a bit silly but these are the ways in which these orders are enforced,” she added.
Wendy Chapple, for the prosecution, said that officers attending Burnley games were aware which individuals they had to look out for – but their colleagues in Scotland would not have the same knowledge.
One of the requirements of any banning order related to away games so that police would know the whereabouts of supporters at the relevant times, she added.
Whittle admitted breach-ing a banning order and was conditionally discharged for 12 months. He was also ordered to pay £50 costs.
The defendant was also brought before the courts in July when he moved house and failed to notify the police of his new address. He was conditionally discharged for a year then also.
Last week McLaughlan, 21, of Bankhouse Road, Nelson, was fined after he failed to sign on with police for all three games during the Clarets’ Scottish tour.

| Football hooligans locked up after mass brawl in Earlsdon - 21/08/2008
Source : CV5 Communities
THREE young football hooligans have been locked up for taking part in a mass brawl which terrified residents and shoppers in a busy Coventry street.
The 17-year-olds, who were among Coventry City fans who clashed with Leicester City supporters in February, were also banned from attending football matches for eight years.
The rival fans fought in Earlsdon hours before the match at the Ricoh Arena.
The three teenagers, all from the Coventry area, appeared before magistrates in the city's youth court yesterday for sentencing after pleading guilty at an earlier hearing to affray.
Prosecuting John Bartlett told the court that on the day of the incident, people out in Earlsdon were left terrified, with one mum cowering behind a car with her young child as the violence escalated.
Mr Bartlett said: "The lady was out shopping with her four-year-old. She said: 'I sensed trouble and felt scared for mine and my child's safety.'
"She started to run with the child but the crowd moved faster. She heard shouting and smashing of glass so went behind a car in a driveway and hid."
He said other witnesses saw men running down the road carrying baseball bats and pieces of wood used as weapons and felt intimidated.
Mr Bartlett added that another woman had to "seek sanctuary" in the nearby Methodist church to escape the brawl.
The violence, which flared in Earlsdon Avenue North, close to the junction of Berkeley Road North, involved up to 100 football hooligans.
In mitigation, the court heard none of the teenagers being sentenced was believed to have played a part in organising the fight and two of them had no previous convictions.
One was described by his lawyer as a "pleasant and polite young man" who was holding down a job working for commission on door-to-door sales.
But the third, who was seen brandishing a piece of wood during the brawl, was already on a referral order for a previous violence-related offence.
His lawyer told the court his client was ashamed and embarrassed by his behaviour and described him as a "hardworking man who wanted to get himself trained and make the most of himself."
But the magistrates gave him detention and a training order for eight months.
The other two 17-year-olds were given detention and training orders for four months.
All three have been banned from going to football matches for eight years.
Chairman of the magistrates Tony Kiely said: " This is large scale public disorder. Members of the public were put not only in fear for their psychological safety but also in fear of their physical safety and we are talking about members of the public going about their business in Earlsdon quite innocently.
"We are going to do our upmost to protect the residents of Coventry, in particular Earlsdon."
He praised the police's reaction to the incident and thanked them for their quick response in dealing with the situation.
Several other men, both Coventry and Leicester fans, are also due to appear in the magistrates court and the crown court today and Friday.

| Australia: Fan violence fears - 21/08/2008Source : Sky News Australia Sydney FC officials have downplayed claims that fan violence is infiltrating the A-League's ranks, and has the potential reach the same epidemic proportions it has in parts of Europe. The move comes after a number of fans were ejected from last weekend's Sydney-Melbourne clash after a wild brawl in the stands. Police say that while the incident was an isolated one and that the majority of fans are well-behaved, the footage is nevertheless alarming. 'I wouldn't blame families for being concerned about the images.' Asst Comm Denis Clifford said. In the days since it's been revealed footage of fan violence at A-League matches has begun popping up on the internet. Police are desperate to avoid seeing a similar situation to the one seen in many European countries, that have at times ended with supporters being killed. 'While it has the potential to go down a similar track to those in other places overseas, we certainly hope that won't be the case,' Asst Comm Clifford said. | |

De Standaard
The hooliganism is strongly decreasing in Belgium. The past football season saw the lowest number of violent incidents in the past 16 years. Last season, Home Affairs still registered 62 groups of risk supporters, Home Affairs Minister Patrick Dewael (Open VLD) explained in answer to a parliamentary question. The hooligan groups in the first division clubs are found at Club Brugge, Standard, Anderlecht, Genk and Charleroi. But heavy football violence has decreased over the past year, whereas the age of hooligans is rising, which means that there is little or no recruitment among the younger generation. According to Dewael, this not only show in the figures on incidents of violence, but also from the analyses of the police and researchers. In the last football season 2007 – 2008 there had been as many as 53 violent incidents. That is the lowest in 16 seasons. In 2006-2007 there were still 74 violent incidents with hooligans. The input of police officers in the fight against violent supporters has gone down by one third compared to five years ago. That is due, among other factors, to prevention measures against football violence. Last year, for example, Home Affairs have banned 1,282 persons with risky behaviour from soccer stadiums.

Pub under siege from drunken football fans
CUSTOMERS were forced to barricade themselves inside a town centre pub as it came under attack from drunken, rival football fans.
Around 20 thugs, believed to be Rochdale FC supporters, were involved in running street battles against a handful of Bury FC fans following the Shakers’ first home game of the season against Brentford on Saturday.
As fighting continued outside O’Neill’s Irish bar in Silver Street, bar staff were forced to bolt the front doors to prevent the rival fans from storming the pub.
Around £2,000 worth of damage was caused as the mob hurled a barrage of bottles and beer glasses at the bar’s windows. Elaine McCullough, manager of O’Neill’s, said: “There was about 20 football fans who turned up outside the pub causing trouble and attacking people. I understand they were Rochdale supporters.
“A number of our customers ran out to help those in trouble. There were fist fights going on.
“We barricaded ourselves in to protect both the customers and staff and then the windows went in. The fans were throwing bottles and glasses against the window.
“We rang the police who were there in a matter of minutes and they controlled the situation. It was all over in less than ten minutes.”
Despite their officers’ fast response, police chiefs say no arrests have yet been made following Saturday’s violence.
A spokeswoman for Greater Manchester Police said: “At about 6pm a large group of men congregated outside the Robert Peel pub. There was also a group of men outside O’Neill’s Irish Bar at the time and the two groups began chanting at each other. A number of pint glasses were thrown and there was an outbreak of disorder outside O’Neill’s“ “No one reported any injuries and inquiries are continuing.”
Anyone who witnessed the disorder is asked to call Bury police on (0161) 856 8095 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111
