AFC fan banned - 12/08/2008

Source : NW Evening Mail

A FOOTBALL fan has been banned from Holker Street for three years after an alleged foul-mouthed tirade.

It followed a night of football violence which marred Barrow AFC’s 3-0 win against Oxford United on Friday.

Another Bluebird fan received a 12-month expulsion from the ground and a 17-year-old was warned about his behaviour.

Brett Cihlar, 36, of Lincoln Street, Barrow, was arrested at the ground.

He has since been charged with a Section Four Public Order offence and bailed to appear before Furness Magistrates’ Court on August 26.

In advance of that hearing, police and club officials have acted to bar him from the Holker Street ground.

Trouble flared between rival fans before, during and after the match. Police and club bosses say such behaviour will not be tolerated.

Violence also broke out at the nearby Tally-Ho pub in Schneider Road when 30 Barrow supporters surrounded a group of rival fans.

The incident was broken up by police.

AFC fan Graham Taylor, 55, contacted Oxford United to apologise for the trouble. Mr Taylor, of South Row, Barrow, was at the game and said in nearly 40 years of supporting the team he has “never felt so ashamed”.

He explained: “Friday night was supposed to be a new dawn for Barrow football but I was really upset about what happened off the pitch. It really got to me and spoilt the evening and I thought I would write a quick email to Oxford United apologising on behalf of all of the decent Barrow football fans.

“It’s just when Barrow has a big game that you get these knuckle draggers turning up and it takes the gloss off the game. People were talking about the trouble and not the game. The same thing happened when Barrow played Bristol Rovers and I guarantee you won’t see them again all season.”

An Oxford dad, known only as Peter, wrote on the Evening Mail website: “I took my small son to the game and we were set upon by a number of your fans, a glass that was thrown just missed my son’s head by inches, needless to say I will never be coming to Barrow again, and when you come to Oxford, expect similar treatment. As far as I’m concerned, you’re the scum of the earth. On the day, you were by far the better team, I think you should have won 5-0, no complaints about the football, just you’re mindless fans.

“I do hope the Oxford fans show restraint when you come down.”

Barrow PC Trevor Jones said trouble of any kind at the Bluebirds’ ground would not be tolerated and they would crack down hard on offenders.

He added: “There has been much discussion in relation to fan behaviour at Friday’s game and I am happy to provide the following information. As always, Barrow AFC and Barrow police have worked closely and today has been no exception. An application has also been made for a Football Banning Order for Brett Cihlar.

“Barrow AFC in conjunction with the support of the police has moved swiftly and issued him with an immediate three-year ban from the club and its grounds.

“The club have also issued an immediate 12-month ban to another male who was also involved in some disorder. A 17 year-old male was ejected from The Crossbar for being abusive and has been warned with regard to his future conduct.

“The club should be applauded for its immediate response to this issue and we will continue to work closely with them to identify offenders, minimise violence and help supporters to make their visits to Holker Street enjoyable.”

Club director Tony Keen said they would not put up with unacceptable behaviour. He added: “We just won’t tolerate people swearing and shouting and upsetting or intimidating other fans. At the end of the day we won’t tolerate violence and or bad behaviour. We are trying to create a family atmosphere in the ground and are trying to curb people shouting and swearing.

“We won’t back away from our responsibility to protect our fans.

“People who cause trouble are a small minority and we won’t stop until we have stopped them behaving this way. People being over-aggressive in the ground can be quite intimidating for others.”

Cumbria police spokesman Ben Mellor said: “Police were called to reports of a disturbance outside the ground at 6.30pm. When they arrived, they found 30 Barrow fans making threats of violence to eight Oxford United fans, but officers managed to defuse the situation before it escalated out of control.”

Court bans Hibs casual from every football ground in UK - 13/08/2008

Source : Scotsman

A FOOTBALL casual who took part in organised battles with rival hooligans has been banned from every UK ground following an order by an Edinburgh court.

Paul Angus has been outlawed from attending games for the next three years and must surrender his passport when Hibs travel abroad.

The 20-year-old did not contest the move, which made him only the second person in the Lothians to be punished with a football banning order (FBO).

The order against Angus follows one taken out against Kevin Watt, who was the first to be hit with an FBO last summer. The pair were convicted together of being involved in a mass brawl at a railway station after a Hibs away match in Falkirk in 2006. A specialist police unit worked to gather intelligence against Angus before submitting a dossier of evidence to Edinburgh Sheriff Court.

Unlike Watt, 19, the order against Angus was obtained without him being convicted of a football-related offence. Watt was slapped with his three-year order after he was charged with chanting racist abuse during a CIS cup semi-final at Tynecastle.

Hibs today welcomed the action taken against Angus, of Drum Crescent, Gilmerton, and pledged to help root out the "small minority" of hooligans.

Police chiefs also revealed that a "number of targets" among both Hibs and Hearts hooligans have been identified and intelligence is being gathered to hit them with FBOs.

Inspector Mike Bennett is the intelligence manager at the force's intelligence unit, which covers football-related disorder. He said: "We've been aware of the behaviour and activities of Angus going back to 2005. He was known to have been engaged in fighting before, during and after Hibs matches both home and away. These fights involved an element of co-ordination and pre-planning.

"Angus is the first person to be made the subject of an FBO on summary application, rather than through a court ruling upon conviction, after we submitted detailed intelligence dating back to 2005.

A number of "risk supporters" have been identified from both sides of the city and we're currently working to process more FBOs against them.

"The vast majority of fans are law-abiding with only a small group involved in causing trouble. It's arguable that they can be called fans at all. Many are simply using football as a cover and opportunity to be involved in violence."

The orders, introduced in 2006, can be imposed following a conviction for a football-related offence, while an FBO on summary application can be made based on evidence that the individual has been involved in disorder.

A Hibs FC spokeswoman said: "The individual concerned is one of a small minority who continue their attempts to tarnish the otherwise good record of Hibernian supporters.

"The club is fully supportive of the application made by Lothian and Borders Police and welcomes the outcome."

Angus and Watt, whose address was given as Pilton Park, pleaded guilty at Falkirk Sheriff Court in November 2006 to being part of a disorderly crowd, near Grahamston rail station, on February 11, that year.

The pair were fined £225 each for repeatedly trying to punch and kick two other men.

Barrow fan apologises for trouble - 11/08/2008

Source: http://www.oxfordmail.net

A Barrow AFC supporter has contacted Oxford United to apologise for crowd trouble which marred the football teams' game in Cumbria on Friday.

Before the game, which United lost 3-0, fans clashed near a pub called the Tally Ho. Two men from Barrow were arrested after 30 of them surrounded a group of United supporters.

Cumbria Police spokesman Ben Mellor said: "Police were called to reports of a disturbance outside the ground at 6.30pm. When they arrived, they found 30 Barrow fans making threats of violence to eight Oxford United fans, but officers managed to defuse the situation before it escalated out of control."

Graham Taylor, 55, a former power station worker, said he was ashamed of a minority of so-called Barrow "fans" who caused trouble.

In an email to United secretary Mick Brown, Mr Taylor wrote: "I should be a very proud Barrow AFC fan this morning, sadly I'm not. This is because, as you will know as well by now, there were some very unsavoury incidents.

"I have been supporting Barrow for nearly 40 years and I have never felt so ashamed. I can assure you though that the people who were responsible for what happened never ever come to Holker Street unless there's a big game.

"Will you please accept my apologies on behalf of all decent and respectful Barrow AFC fans?"

Mr Taylor told the Oxford Mail: "These trouble-makers come along but they are not true Barrow fans."

Mr Brown said: "I appreciated getting Mr Taylor's email."

Brett Cihlar, 36, of Barrow, was charged with threatening behaviour and bailed to appear before magistrates on August 26. A 33-year-old from Barrow was given a fixed penalty fine.

There were about 300 members of Torcida in Spain. Another 70 did not come, because their bus had a damage close to Nice(France).
Spanish OB twice tried to restore order "without any reason" before the game in front of the stadium. During the game their was also another short intervention by them.

Fans on red card alert - 16/08/2008

Source : Sunderland Echo

"BEHAVE or you will be banned".

That was the message from police to Sunderland supporters intent on causing trouble this season.

Officers have slapped 61 banning orders on rogue Black Cat fans as Sunderland AFC kick off their new season today.

As tens of thousands flock to the Stadium of Light for the first game of the Premiership, officers have issued a zero tolerance approach.
Some of the city's most prolific troublemakers are among the 61 who will be prevented from attending any of this season's fixtures.

Officers, who work closely with SAFC, also now have powers to exclude them from pubs and clubs in the city centre in the hours before and after games.

Inspector George Maratty, of Northumbria Police's Football Intelligence Unit, will be responsible for policing at the ground during the coming months.

He said: "We are trying to make matches a nice, family-friendly event.
"We're trying to keep them safe and if there are any troublemakers we will catch them.

"Football hooliganism has been marginalised now and out of the 45,000 people that attend a Sunderland match, the risk group is tiny.
"But anyone acting in a disorderly manner will be arrested and we will get them banned from games.

"A lot of people think that just means they can't go to football matches but it also means whenever there is an England game they have to check in at a police station and hand over their passport so no holidays during those times.

"We can also get them banned from licensed premises on match days so it can affect their lives in different ways."

Police use a range of measures to make sure that Sunderland matches are safe to attend.

The high levels of CCTV and camera coverage means police are immediately able to spot trouble, and undercover "spotters" who know the thugs to keep an eye on are always on hand at matches.

Ahead of today's match, police have been working hard to stamp out trouble and have been liaising closely with police in Liverpool to identify any potential football hooligans to keep an eye on.

And policing each match, whether it is home or away, is challenging for the team who work tirelessly to ensure trouble is kept to a minimum.
Sergeant Glen Patterson, football liaison officer, said: "Most of the work goes into pre-match preparation and after match. The game is actually the smallest part of it.

"For derbys like Sunderland and Middlesbrough or Sunderland and Newcastle, the planning process starts as soon as their last game ends because they can be testing.

"For the rest of the games, we start looking at the new season once the previous one has ended. We look at which clubs have been promoted and we make an agreement with each club to categorise each game.

"An A is low level, B, C, then CIR, which means increased risk, for derby matches. That will reflect how many police resources we need and what action we take.

"For big games, like those against Newcastle, we have to have resources deployed in both cities. We have to arrange for their arrival back in Sunderland and for the fans who remain in say Newcastle until everything has calmed down.

"We hand the city back in a state of normality."

CASE STUDY
THE mastermind behind an infamous battle between Newcastle and Sunderland football fans was given a five year ban from all football grounds after abusing police officers last season.

Jason Jameson, 39, of Maud Street, was also banned from entering any city where Sunderland AFC are playing after swearing at police during the last game of the season against Arsenal.

Jameson is the man behind a bloody battle between Sunderland and Newcastle fans at the North Shields ferry landing in 2000.

Police described the brawl as like a scene out of Braveheart, and after a £1 million police probe, Jameson was put behind bars for four years in 2002 along with 15 of the 35 men who were arrested.
