Police warning for Burnley football hooligans - 07/08/2008

Source : Lancashire Telegraph

A POLICE chief has warned football hooligans that there is no hiding place - even during pre-season - after a Burnley FC fan admitted breaching a court order banning him from Clarets matches.
Convicted football lout Paul McLaughlan, 21, is not thought to have attended three games on Burnley’s pre-season tour of Scotland.

But he did not sign on with police before the matches with Queen of the South, Partick Thistle and St Johnstone so he was hauled before Burnley magistrates.

McLaughlan, of Bankhouse Road, Nelson, admitted three offences of breaching a football banning order, first imposed in 2005, and was fined £210 with £60 costs and a £15 victim surcharge.

Passing sentence, magistrates said that an aggravating factor in his case was that he had already appeared before the courts once previously for breaching the order.

McLaughlan, an avid Clarets fans, was banned from Turf Moor and grounds across the country in November 2005 after he threw his friend’s trainer onto the pitch during a game against Hull City.

He was arrested and held in cells at Burnley police station over the incident. Later he appeared before magistrates and was conditionally discharged for 12 months, as well as being made the subject of a three-year football banning order.

Supporters club leaders condemed the punishment as “very harsh” but the club insisted it was committed to tackling anti-social behaviour and backed the decision.

Under the terms of his sentence, McLaughlan is required to sign on with police whenever Burnley FC have an official fixture, including pre-season games.

Chief Insp Jeff Brown, who runs Operation Fixture, designed to crack down on drunken violence and racism at Turf Moor, has welcomed the sentence.

He said: “The charges relate to Burnley’s pre-season games and he was expected to sign on at the police station each time they played.

“We take this issue very seriously and will deal with people very robustly, when these orders are breached.”

Last season a total of 57 Burnley fans had been made subject to football banning orders.

Police Warn Fans Without Tickets Not To Travel - 07/08/2008

Source : Vitalfootball

South Wales Police have sent a warning to fans without tickets for the clubs first game back in the 2nd tier of British football against Charlton not to travel to London in the hope of picking one up at The Valley

In a crackdown against potential violence and ticket problems at the ground, The Metropolitan Police service working in partnership with their Welsh counterparts have urged fans to stay away. However the police have insisted they want all Swansea fans to have a safe and enjoyable trip. Club officials have also been quick to point out that all 3,300 tickets have been sold and there are no places available on official coaches which sold out early this week.

Fans traveling in the extensive underground train network have been advised there will be no alcohol allowed on Greater London tube trains since the new legislation banning the consumption of alcohol on the Capital's rail system. Supporters independently traveling to the game should exit Junction two of the M25.

Acting Chief Superintendent Julian Williams Told The SWEP:

"We want all the Swansea fans to have an enjoyable day out. We have been working hard to ensure that this will be the case. I would strongly urge any fans intending to travel without tickets not to do so, as all the away tickets have been sold."

Police appeal to find alleged yobs - 08/08/2008

Source : Evening Gazette

DO you recognise any of these suspected football hooligans?
Season 08/09 - August - Page 2 2wlybzk
Season 08/09 - August - Page 2 30u3k04

Police are appealing for help to identify these eight men in connection with disorder and criminal damage offences following the Sunderland v Middlesbrough match last season.

The offences were committed after the game had finished at the Stadium of Light on Saturday, April 26.

They took place within the ground, outside the stadium and on the train.

Northumbria Police Neighbourhood Sergeant Paul Dixon said: “I would ask anyone who recognises any of the men in these photographs to get in touch as soon as possible.

“Violence and criminal damage are not acceptable.

“Fans who get involved in this sort of behaviour before, during or after games spoil it for the real supporters and we just won’t tolerate this sort of behaviour.”

The appeal to find the alleged football yobs comes as British Transport Police (BTP) has said football-related disorder appears to be on the rise.

They called on fans to act responsibly and enjoy their football in the new season.

The force revealed it made 601 arrests across the UK last season with 118 in the North-east.

BTP’s Assistant Chief Constable of Operations Alan Pacey said the 2007-08 season saw a 10% increase in football related anti-social and alcohol-fuelled incidents on trains and at stations across the UK.

He said: “The 2007-2008 season was definitely a challenging one for us.

“Alcohol-fuelled disorder was the most prevalent problem, with an increase from 305 to 337 incidents.

“We also had 25 police officers assaulted during the season – the highest number ever recorded by BTP.”

He added: “We did however get a better grip on organised hooligan elements through increased use of football banning orders on known trouble-makers.

“Consequently we had a reduction in serious incidents from 83 in the 2006-07 season to 63 last season.

“In the same time period we secured 122 football banning orders, with many cases still pending.

“We would appeal to fans ahead of the new football season not to over indulge in alcohol.”

Hooligans hunted after Sunderland v Boro trouble

POLICE have appealing for help to identify seven men in connection with trouble at April's Sunderland-Middlesborough derby clash.
A number of public order and criminal damage offences were committed after the game at the Stadium of Light on Saturday, April 26.

The offences were committed after the game had finished within the ground, outside the stadium and on the train.

Neighbourhood Sergeant Paul Dixon said: "I would ask anyone who recognises any of the men in these photographs to get in touch as soon as possible.

"Violence and criminal damage are not acceptable.

"Fans who get involved in this sort of behaviour before, during or after games, spoil it for the real supporters, and we just won't tolerate this sort of behaviour."

Anyone with any information is asked to contact the Sunderland North neighbourhood policing team on 03456 043 043 or Crimestoppers.

Middlesbrough: Hooligans get suspended sentences - 08/08/2008

Source: BBC

Four Middlesbrough football fans who attacked a group of Chelsea supporters on a train have been given suspended jail sentences.

During the assault last October, as the train approached Thornaby, one of them threw 24 separate punches.

All four men, aged between 28 and 47, had earlier pleaded guilty to affray.

The judge at Teesside Crown Court said they had behaved like "mindless teenagers", and they had only narrowly escaped being sent to jail.

John James, 29, from Scarborough Lane, Tingley, Wakefield, West Yorkshire, and his uncle Kevin Walker, 47, from Welland Crescent, in Stockton, appeared to play the largest role in the fighting, which was captured on CCTV.

You are not teenage hooligans, each of you has responsible jobs
Judge John Bowers

The pair were joined by Jamie Dea, 28, of Norton Drive in Stockton, and Jamie Westwood, 31, of Chiltern Close, also in the town.

The court heard they targeted members of the York Chelsea Supporters Club - including a couple, a middle-aged fan who had only one eye, and a teenager - after light-hearted banter turned sour.

A woman was punched in the face and had her glasses stamped on then thrown in her husband's face.

The victims suffered grazes and bruises, but none were seriously hurt.

James received a 15-month sentence, suspended for two years, and Walker was given a 12-month suspended sentence.

'Great disrepute'

Dea and Westwood each received eight-month suspended sentences.

The four were ordered to carry out unpaid community work and pay their victims compensation amounting to hundreds of pounds.

They were also banned from attending football matches for five years. Middlesbrough has already banned each of them from the Riverside stadium for life.

Judge Peter Bowers said: "You are not teenage hooligans, each of you has responsible jobs, you earn decent money, you have all got partners, mortgages and children to look after who depend on you."

He added that he was "agonising" over sending them to prison because of the effect it would have on other people.

"You did not think of the consequences to your families when you engaged in this action, you were not thinking about them, should you get locked up," he said.

"This sort of behaviour brings ordinary regular supporters into great disrepute."

Hooligans video seen in court

SICKENING footage of football violence was shown in a court today after four thugs admitted beating up terrified rival supporters on a train.

The Middlesbrough yobs picked on Chelsea supporters wearing replica tops, including a man and wife, a middle-aged fan who had one eye, and a teenager, after watching their team lose 2-0 at home to the London side on October 20 last year.

Judge Peter Bowers handed out suspended sentences to the four men at Teesside Crown Court after they admitted affray at an earlier hearing.

The hooligans did not seek out fellow soccer yobs, but picked on members of the York Chelsea Supporters Club after light-hearted banter turned ugly, the court heard.

One threw 24 punches in a flurry of violence, a woman was struck in the face and watched her husband get beaten up.

Even after a guard bravely intervened and tried to keep the peace, the female victim Nicola Welch had her glasses stamped on and then thrown in her husband Alan’s face.

The trouble was started by John James, 29, from Tingley, Wakefield, West Yorkshire, who was snapped after one of the Chelsea fans pointed out Middlesbrough had recently been named as the worst place in the country to live on Channel 4.

He leapt on Derek Hagyard, an industrial worker who lost an eye in a workplace accident, as the 18.07 from Middlesbrough to York approached Thornaby, Teesside.

His burly uncle Kevin Walker, 47, seen on CCTV in a striped jumper, then waded in, throwing a 24 punches at three different people directly in front of the camera.

The £40,000-a-year construction team leader, from Welland Crescent, Stockton, Teesside, appeared to play the largest role in the fighting, but was joined by Jamie Dea, 28, and Jamie Westwood, 31, both from Stockton.

Mr Hagyard had his jacket pulled over his head as blows continued to rain down on him, and he was seen on CCTV to be bleeding from the eye when the attack finally stopped.

He told police: “The women were crying hysterically, the Middlesbrough lot were gloating.”

As Mr Welch scrabbled on the floor to find his wife’s glasses, they appeared in the middle of the Boro yobs’ group, and James stamped on them, before flinging them in her husband’s face.

The defendants admitted affray and James pleaded guilty to criminal damage.

Their victims were left with grazes and bruises and were helped by St John Ambulance volunteers when the train was stopped and police called, but none were seriously hurt.

The defendants, who are fathers with mortgages, all expressed their revulsion at what they had done.

James was spotted by police associating with known Middlesbrough hooligans in the past, the court heard.

A police source said the Middlesbrough hooligan gang wanted it to be known they had nothing to do with the cowardly attack on regular fans.

Judge Bowers said the four came very close to being jailed.

James was given a 15-month sentenced, suspended for two years. Walker was handed a 12-month suspended sentence while Dea and Westwood were handed eight-month suspended sentences.

Hooligans banned for three years - 09/08/2008

Source : expressandstar.com

Three Wolves hooligans who pelted rival fans with missiles during a clash outside Molineux have been banned from all matches for three years.

The yobs were involved in violent scenes which flared outside the ground following the team’s 4-2 defeat against Stoke in February.

Scores of warring fans came to blows in the streets surrounding the stadium after the game, Wolverhampton Crown Court heard yesterday, and police arrested a total of 24 football supporters.

Ward Morgan, aged 20, from Wednesbury, 21-year-old Steven Walters (pictured) and 18-year-old Shaun Jones, both from Wolverhampton, appeared before the court after pleading guilty to affray.

Mr Julian Elcock, prosecuting, said the men had all been involved in the confrontation.

“After the match there was some disorder in the area of the streets surrounding the ground,” he said. “There were missiles being thrown and a small amount of scuffling.”

The court was shown video footage in which Morgan could be seen gesturing to rival supporters and throwing stones towards a police van.

Walters, who covered the lower part of his face with a scarf during the clash, threw stones, while Jones made hand gestures egging on rival fans and also threw a stone.

The court was told Morgan had drunk two bottles of beer before the outbreak and told police he had got involved in the disorder because his team had lost.

Miss Michelle Heeley, defending Morgan, said he had since distanced himself from trouble and was now holding down a full-time job. Mr Kevin Saunders, defending Walters, said his part in the clash had been “wholly out of character.” Mr Jasvir Mann, defending Jones, said he was the least involved and simply did not have the maturity to walk away from the trouble.

Sentencing the men, Judge Nigel Baker QC told them there were more important things in life than a football team being beaten.

“There’s more to life than that,” he said. “Wolverhampton Wanderers lose football matches and it’s not the end of the world.”

Morgan, of Myvod Road, Walters, of Malpass Walk, Park Village and Jones, of Park Lane, Fallings Park were all given a five-month prison term, suspended for two years, and banned from football matches for three years.

England: FOOTBALL FANS ARE URGED TO BEHAVE - 09/08/2008

Source: http://www.thisisleicestershire.co.uk

Football fans are being asked to behave after statistics revealed more than 150 were arrested on the railway network last season.

British Transport Police (BTP) said it made 171 arrests on trains and at stations in Wales, the Midlands and south west England.

In October, Craig Haldane, 43, a Leicester City supporter, was given a five-month jail sentence and a six-year banning order for an unprovoked attack on an elderly couple.

He had been on a train with a mixed group of Leicester and Sheffield Wednesday fans.

He repeatedly punched a pensioner who was trying to protect his wife.

BTP Assistant Chief Constable Alan Pacey, said football-related arrests across the country had risen for the eighth season in a row - from 567 to 601.

He said: "We appeal to fans ahead of the new season not to over indulge in alcohol.

"For those coming into London, we would remind passengers to adhere to the ban on consumption of alcohol on the Tube."

England: Police kick off with warning to football fans - 09/08/2008

Source: Huddersfield Daily Examiner

SOCCER fans are being warned to behave by British Transport Police.

With the football season kicking off today, when Huddersfield Town take on Stockport County, police will be on high alert to tackle alcohol-fuelled fans.

The British Transport Police say alcohol plays a part in more than half of all arrests on match days.

In total 118 football- related arrests were made in the region last year, with 601 arrests throughout the country.

Police have now called on fans to act responsibly when using trains and at railway stations.

Chief Insp Jane Townsley, from the regional BTP, said “Alcohol has definitely played a factor with many of those arrested, with incidents ranging from low-level disorder, assaults and public order offences such as swearing and abusive behaviour.’’

She added: “We will use all the tools at our disposal to rid the railway system of football troublemakers.

“These people are in the minority, but we don’t want them spoiling things for the majority of law-abiding football fans.’’

Last season saw a 10% increase in anti-social behaviour linked to football fans.

Barrow view

we had it with them in the car park after the game, we had about 30 lads they had about 20ish about, as soon as we went for them they backed off....so we did em anyway. good result in my eyes (even though one eye is stinging .) we also went at them b4 the game. one poor bastard being knocked out with a pool cue lmao
anyway good game and good turn out all around for a friday

*********

Oxford view

You were told on here, (and also by pm, so I believe) that no Oxford firm as such were coming and that any lads that did come were there for the match.

I'll skip all the bullying of scarfers that went on in the Tally Ho as that is covered on away day's link and move onto the car park incident afterwards.

We had one minibus with 14 on it. That included 4 seventeen years old, 3 or 4 "non lads" and half a dozen lads. Your 30 or so were on the road, we were next to our minibus waiting for other vehicles to move before we could leave. we saw you, you saw us, pleasantries were exchanged, and because you had the overwhelming numbers and are the bunch of bullying cunts that you clearly are, you fancied it.

You got a bit more than you bargained for though didn't you? You came at us (that's the only credit you'll get from me) and about 8 or 9 of us stood our ground. We never backed an inch. One of ours had about four of yours on him, but that apart not a scratch on any of us. You took the injuries (hows that big fellah, broken ribs I reckon?). You ended up outside the car park. As ever with these sort of things, not everyone gets involved and some of yours didn't look that keen when they realised we were not going to give an inch, and unlike scarfers, would actually hit them back.

‘Ointment’ hooligan jailed over pub fight - 11/08/2008

Source : Bradford Telegraph Argus

A football hooligan who bragged about his activities in a television documentary has been jailed for 27 months.

During an interview on The Real Football Factory, Bradford City follower Daniel Wright claimed clashes with rival supporters were ‘’the best buzz in the world’’.

But a judge told him yesterday that his offending brought disrepute to the city and the club. Judge Jonathan Durham Hall QC heard that Wright was a member of the notorious Ointment gang and had twice been made the subject of football banning orders.

Prosecutor Louise Azmi told Bradford Crown Court that the 24-year-old was still under a four-year banning order when he was involved in a confrontation with Rotherham United fans last December.

She told the court how the fixture with Bradford City had been called off because of bad weather, but some Rotherham fans ended up drinking at the Windmill Inn in Wibsey, Bradford. Judge Durham Hall watched police video footage of Wright throwing punches at rival fans in the doorway of the pub as fighting spilled out along the street.

Wright, who was not arrested until April, pleaded guilty to a charge of affray, and Mrs Azmi outlined details of his previous convictions which included football-related offences in March, 2004, and October, 2005.

The judge was also shown clips from the documentary programme in which Wright told the interviewer: “When it kicks off it’s the best buzz in the world.’’ As part of his sentence yesterday Judge Durham Hall imposed a new eight-year football banning order on Wright even though his barrister pointed out that its terms would not have prevented the incident in Wibsey.

The new order means that Wright, of Greenholme Court, Holme Wood, Bradford, cannot go within a mile of Bradford City’s ground on match days for three hours before the kick-off and two hours after the game has finished.

He faces a similar restriction on going to either of city’s railway stations when City are at home and if they have an away game he must not go within five miles of an opponent’s ground.

Wright’s barrister Nigel Hamilton conceded that the latest incident was a serious one, but he pointed out that it was short-lived and his client had only used his fists during the fighting.

“While I accept that it is unpleasant and unlawful violence…for this type of violence it is at the lower end of the scale,’’ he submitted.

But Judge Durham Hall told Wright he was “a committed football hooligan’’ adding: “You clearly couldn’t care less. You revel in your notoriety even finding some satisfaction in being part of a group childishly named the Ointment – a choice which indicates the intellectual level of this activity.”

The judge said he intended to send out a message to others that the courts would not tolerate such offending.

Another man Kye Revitt, 23, of Westgate Hill Street, Bradford, also admitted the affray charge arising out of the same disturbance last December.

He was granted bail until September 15 so that a pre-sentence report could be prepared on him.

As part of his bail he is banned from going within a mile of City’s ground before and after any home games.

Barrow fan apologises for trouble

Source : Oxford Mail

A Barrow AFC supporter has contacted Oxford United to apologise for crowd trouble which marred the football teams' game in Cumbria on Friday.

Before the game, which United lost 3-0, fans clashed near a pub called the Tally Ho. Two men from Barrow were arrested after 30 of them surrounded a group of United supporters.

Cumbria Police spokesman Ben Mellor said: "Police were called to reports of a disturbance outside the ground at 6.30pm. When they arrived, they found 30 Barrow fans making threats of violence to eight Oxford United fans, but officers managed to defuse the situation before it escalated out of control."

advertisementGraham Taylor, 55, a former power station worker, said he was ashamed of a minority of so-called Barrow "fans" who caused trouble.

In an email to United secretary Mick Brown, Mr Taylor wrote: "I should be a very proud Barrow AFC fan this morning, sadly I'm not. This is because, as you will know as well by now, there were some very unsavoury incidents.

"I have been supporting Barrow for nearly 40 years and I have never felt so ashamed. I can assure you though that the people who were responsible for what happened never ever come to Holker Street unless there's a big game.

"Will you please accept my apologies on behalf of all decent and respectful Barrow AFC fans?"

Mr Taylor told the Oxford Mail: "These trouble-makers come along but they are not true Barrow fans."

Mr Brown said: "I appreciated getting Mr Taylor's email."

Brett Cihlar, 36, of Barrow, was charged with threatening behaviour and bailed to appear before magistrates on August 26. A 33-year-old from Barrow was given a fixed penalty fine.

Police to blow whistle on football-related disorder - 12/08/2008

Source : Avon and Somerset Constabulary

With the new football season underway police have warned they are not prepared to tolerate anti social behaviour or any form of football-related hooliganism.

The police have pledged to continue their robust policy of taking a tough line with those involved in football-related hooliganism by taking offenders to court and seeking football banning orders.

More than 50 football hooligans have football banning orders in the Avon and Somerset force area.

The force's football intelligence desk officer Roger Thayer said last season saw a slight increase in arrests in the force area against a general national trend of reducing football-related offences.

Last season 163 people were arrested, compared with 137 the previous year. However this can be offset against the increased number of cup games clubs were involved with and also operations carried out by British Transport Police.

"In 2007-08 at Bristol City home and away fixtures a total of 96 people were arrested - 88 of whom were City supporters. Bristol Rovers fixtures saw 64 arrested with two thirds of the total (45) Rovers fans. Our third football league side - Yeovil Town - saw just three arrests but they were all from the Somerset club.

Roger Thayer added: "As a result of the arrests 14 received football banning orders, which prevents their attendance at any regulated football match for a period of between three and five years, if not subjected to a custodial sentence. For those who were imprisoned the banning order extends to a period of between six and 10 years. One person sentenced to a four month prison term received a six-year football banning order.

"Other conditions requested on a FBO may include exclusion zones around stadia before and after home fixtures, a day-long ban on travel to towns and cities, where away matches.

"There are still others in the criminal justice system awaiting trial for football-related disorder," said Roger.

In addition, nine summonses were served on 'fans' identified by intelligence as being involved in football disorder and seven FBOs were granted by magistrates. The duration of these orders will run between three and five years, however one person was given a four-year banning order because of previous convictions.

Forcewide there are 53 people being monitored by police, who have banning orders.

Supt Adrian Coombs, who oversees the football operation said: "In Avon and Somerset we work closely with police colleagues across the country to identify and build intelligence profiles on known "risk" supporters and those on the fringes. This, together with partnership work with our local football league clubs, enables us to target those intent on disrupting games or causing problems in the community before and after games. This enables us to create a safe and enjoyable environment for families visiting games in Avon and Somerset.

"Not only do Avon and Somerset football officers look at match-day disorder but also carry out enquiries based on intelligence received. Three such enquiries have been held during the past 12 months. Four people are currently awaiting trial at Bristol Crown Court for one incident and four others have already appeared in court. Two five-year FBOs were imposed as the result, highlighting the severity of the offences.

"The message from Avon and Somerset police is – enjoy your football at our three league clubs but if your intention is to try to disrupt games or spoil the enjoyment for genuine fans, you are likely to end up with a football banning order," said Supt Coombs.
