| MARSEILLE FANS KILLED IN CRASH - 23/08/2008Source : Sportinglife.com Two Marseille fans have died after the coach they were travelling in crashed into a bridge post 70 kilometres south of Paris, according to reports. French newspaper La Provence reported that 14 other people were seriously injured in the accident, which occurred on the A6 near Fontainebleau around 7.45am local time. Six of those 14 were transported by helicopter to a nearby hospital. The official OM coach was transporting supporters to Le Havre ahead of Saturday's Ligue 1 match at the Stade Jules Deschaseaux. It is believed to be the only vehicle involved in the accident. The reasons behind the incident are unknown. The match between Le Havre and Marseille could now be postponed. "We are all in shock," OM sporting director Jose Anigo is quoted as saying in La Provence. "If we play, we will wear black armbands without asking for authorisation. "The real question is whether OM are going to play tonight. (Marseille president) Pape Diouf is going to discuss it with Frederic Thiriez, the president of the French league." The match is scheduled to kick off at 7pm local time. | |

| Stadium ban for Honved after fans' racism - 22/08/2008
Source : Reuters
Hungarian club Budapest Honved have been ordered to play their next European club match behind closed doors following racist conduct by their supporters and the displaying of an illicit banner during an Intertoto Cup match.
European soccer's ruling body UEFA said on Friday the club had been given a total of two matches behind closed doors for the events during the July game against Austrian side Sturm Graz, but that the second match would be suspended for a five-year probationary period.
Sturm were fined 25,000 euros for improper conduct by their supporters during the same match which the Austrian club won 2-1.

| Australia: Louts in crowd flare-ups could score lifetime bans - 24/08/2008
Source: http://www.brisbanetimes.com.au
FOOTBALL Federation Australia is taking an iron-fisted approach to hooliganism at A-League matches, considering permanently moving games between Sydney FC and Melbourne Victory to Friday nights and introducing mandatory five-year bans for louts.
The new rules have been forced on FFA after several incidents at last weekend's season opener at the Sydney Football Stadium. Police ejected 16 people and arrested eight of them.
The Sun-Herald understands the FFA is even considering introducing lifetime bans, including for Socceroos matches, while it is hoped the move to Friday nights will cut down the number of travelling fans and opportunities to drink before entering the ground.
FFA officials are furious that some people are putting the sport's hard-won reputation under threat and are adamant that bad behaviour, particularly at Sydney-Melbourne matches, be stamped out.
The events inside the ground last weekend followed a brawl at a nearby pub an hour before kick-off. Moore Park Road was blocked off as police rushed to the scene brandishing batons and broke up a disturbance involving football supporters. A large group of Melbourne fans were ordered to move and walked across the park yelling anti-Sydney slogans.
Inside the ground, a fight erupted before the match and, later, play was held up by the referee as security staff removed one of two flares that were tossed onto the field.
One of the flares is known to have come from a Sydney spectator, though he was not a club member or part of the team's cheer group, The Cove. FFA chief executive Ben Buckley told The Sun-Herald that people thrown out of grounds during A-League matches would soon face greatly increased penalties.
"If people who are banned attempt to enter a match, under our ticketing conditions, they are then liable to be charged with criminal trespass," Buckley said.
"We have been working closely with our security advisers, police departments, venue management and the clubs to do everything possible to minimise unacceptable behaviour at games.
"While there were some regrettable incidents at last Saturday's match between Sydney and Melbourne, the incidents were dealt with very quickly on the night by police and security personnel largely because of the cooperation and planning that went into the security aspects of the game."
The FFA has employed a policy of ushering opposing fans to different pubs before matches but it cannot control where people walk when outside the stadium. Last Saturday's problems add to a growing list of incidents. The most serious occurred after Sydney FC's visit to Melbourne last November when police used capsicum spray to subdue violent fans who had caused trouble inside and outside the ground. Patience is running out at football headquarters.
"The majority of football supporters are well-behaved and passionate fans who attend football to enjoy the game with their family and friends, and we intend keeping it that way," Buckley said.

| AIK - Hammarby IF - 25/08/2008Source : Stockholm News Scandal in football derbyThe football derby between AIK and Hammarby tonight had to be interrupted for several minutes after things were thrown into the pitch. The result was 1-1 at the end of the game when AIK got a dubious penalty which they scored on. That was too much for some of the Hammarby supporters, who threw in crackers at the pich writes Dagens Nyheter. A fight started on the Hammarby stand during the break and some people tried to get into the pitch but were stopped by the police. The game was resumed after several minutes and Hammarby manage to equalise to 2-2. The build up to the match saw a series of incidents in and around Stockholm and a commuter train at Stockholm South Station was vandalized. "There was also fighting by the southern parking area at Råsunda, but it had broken up by the time we arrived," said Ann-Charlotte Wejnäs at Stockholm police to news agency TT. Close to Råsunda around 200 AIK supporters had armed themselves with stones when police arrived on the scene and intervened. Two arrested for racist chants
Wigan have confirmed that two arrests have been made following racist chants during Sunday’s 1-0 defeat to Chelsea at the JJB Stadium.
The game was marred by racist chanting from the East Stand, but the club has confirmed action has been taken.
In an official statement, chief executive Brenda Spencer told the club’s official website: “The majority of our fans display exemplary behaviour, which is extremely pleasing and I think deserves a huge amount of praise.
“It is disappointing when incidents like this occur and I am delighted to say that these occurrences are very rare these days.
“As a club, we are fully behind the Kick Racism out of Football campaign, and we remain fully committed to ridding the game of the blight of racism.”

| Football hooligans warned off Cheltenham - 27/08/2008
Source : Gloucestershire Echo
HOOLIGANS determined to cause trouble at football matches in Cheltenham face tough new measures introduced by police. Officers in Cheltenham have warned football supporters that violence and disorder will not be tolerated at Saturday's match against Leicester after invoking new powers to prevent alcohol-related violence in the town at the last home game. On August 16 police were faced with the prospect of a group of people travelling by train from Swindon who were associated with football related violence. They had been drinking heavily and it was believed they were travelling to Cheltenham to cause a disturbance. As a result officers invoked new powers under Section 27 of the Violent Crime Reduction Act, 2006 that allow police to issue a direction to an individual to leave a locality if its thought their presence is likely to lead to alcohol-related disorder. Football Intelligence Officer PC Mark Smith said: "We strongly believe that the people of Cheltenham should be able to go about their day without having to suffer the effects of football related violence and disorder. "Visitors to Cheltenham and to the football are very welcome as long as they do not come to cause trouble." The group were stopped at Cheltenham railway station and placed on a train back to Swindon. Officers from Gloucestershire also went on the train to ensure there was no disruption to other members of the public using the rail network. PC Smith added: "Residents can be assured that we will respond in a positive and robust manner to anyone who is intent on engaging in such activity. "We hope this sends a clear message that alcohol related disorder will not be tolerated in Cheltenham and that Gloucestershire Constabulary will continue to strive to keep football safe for local and visiting supporters."

Fans arrested at East Anglian derby
TEN football supporters were arrested by police last night after minor trouble broke out as Ipswich and Colchester met in an East Anglian Derby at Portman Road.
Eight Colchester United fans and two Ipswich Town supporters were arrested in connection with Public Order Offences in Ipswich last night, police have said.
The sides met in a second round tie of the Carling Cup - formerly known as the League Cup - at Portman Road with Colchester bringing one of the biggest away followings Ipswich supporters have seen since West Ham United packed out the Cobbold Stand in a play-off clash back in May 2004.
Colchester sold out their pre allocation of 2,500 but estimations today suggest tickets sold to Colchester fans on the night could have swelled their support to around 4,000.
PC Marc Norman, Suffolk police's football intelligence officer, said: “We made 10 arrests in total - eight Colchester fans and two Ipswich fans - while 16 people had to be ejected from the stadium.
“With regards to last season's fixture between the clubs, which was also an evening kick-off, the number of arrests was very similar and on the whole we are very pleased.
“In terms of disorder around the town, the majority of the arrests were confined to the football stadium and we were pleased with the operation last night.”
Police decided to close off an area of Portman Road to home supporters after the game to prevent the opposing fans mixing after Ipswich triumphed 2-1 to reach the next round.

| Olympiakos - Anorthosis Famagouste - 27/08/2008Source : The Associated Press + Sport24 Fans rampage before Champions League qualifierRiot police clashed with Olympiakos fans ahead of a Champions League match on Wednesday. Police used tear gas to disperse fans outside Karaiskaki stadium ahead of the second leg of a third round qualifying match between Greek champion Olympiakos and Cyprus' Anorthosis Famagusta. There were no immediate reports of injuries or arrests. Olympiakos lost the first leg 3-0. Police also said that a bus carrying the Anorthosis team had been attacked by youths Tuesday while the visiting players were traveling from Athens International Airport to the capital. Anorthosis officials said they would report the incident to UEFA. ************************************************************* Source : Cyprus-mail Anorthosis fans stoned by mob in station riot ANORTHOSIS fans yesterday faced a barrage of rocks, chairs and other projectiles in shocking scenes as they arrived at the Georgios Karaiskakis Stadium in Athens for their Champions League showdown with Olympiakos Piraeus. Several light injuries were reported and one supporter was taken to hospital as police in full riot gear tried in vain to shield the visiting Cypriot supporters who were stoned as they got off the train by a mob who had gathered on the facing platform. Television pictures showed Anorthosis fans draped in Greek flags, ducking and sprinting for shelter under a rain of stones, while riot police clashed with the hooligans. “You’re animals,” one Cypriot fan screamed at a Greek television camera. “We weren’t even treated like this in Turkey,” he said referring to the Famagusta club’s high octane visit to Trabzonspor in 2005. Inside the stadium, fans taunted the Cypriot refugee club as “Ottomans”. The violence was the latest in a string of incidents since the team arrived in Athens on Tuesday. Anorthosis officials yesterday blamed the Greek media for whipping up a frenzied atmosphere, and said they would report the incidents to UEFA. On Tuesday, Olympiakos fans attacked the bus carrying the Anorthosis players and technical team – first as they were leaving Eleftherios Venizelos Airport to go to their hotel and then outside the Georgios Karaiskakis Stadium as they went to train for the first time. As the team got off the bus at the stadium on Tuesday, they were jostled by the crowd and Anorthosis Chairman Andreas Panteli was hit by one man in the mob. The Anorthosis camp yesterday blamed the vicious atmosphere on the Greek media’s reaction to Olympiakos’ sensational 3-0 defeat in the first leg of the game. From Tuesday, they requested stronger police protection, for the players as well as the fans, but incidents continued unabated. Olympiakos officials, on the other hand, have tried to play down the incidents and yesterday afternoon had yet to apologise for their fans’ behaviour. The Greek media, however, generally condemned Tuesday’s “disgraceful” attacks on the Anorthosis players as the work of “thoughtless hooligans”. The executive advisor of Anorthosis, Dinos Domazis, said he was sad about the incidents and blamed the Greek media, but Olympiakos and the police as well, who he said had failed to take the necessary measures. He said the man who had hit Anorthosis Chairman Andreas Panteli outside the stadium was actually an Olympiakos security guard. “The [police] escort was very small as we left the airport,” Domazis said yesterday. “After the incidents, of course, it increased, but we weren’t expecting to go to the stadium in the evening and face the same situation.” The players and technical team, he added, were expecting the police to have distanced the fans from the stadium before Anorthosis arrived. Instead, “the police led the bus with the players to the area where the fans were waiting.” Asked to comment on rumours that the people responsible for the attack had been put up to it by the Olympiakos team, Domazis said he wasn’t totally sure, but that was how it seemed. “What we are sure of is that the person who hit our chairman was a security guard in the stadium, who we were told was an Olympiakos man,” he said. Referring to the Greek media’s role, Domazis said, “If you look back to the sport newspapers of last week and this week, you will see that there was an attempt to create this hostile climate and our chairman referred to this [on Tuesday]. He clearly told journalists that it was their fault that this climate had been created and no one responded.” He added, “All these incidents that took place yesterday were in the presence of the UEFA supervisor and he is fully aware of the incidents and so are UEFA who we have informed with our complaint.” Concluding, Domazis repeated the club spokesman’s statement the day before that they hadn’t even received such a hostile welcome when they went to Turkey. “And the worst thing is that after yesterday’s incidents, unfortunately, not one person or member of Olympiakos came at to least show support or apologise.” But in the end it was the players who did the talking, silencing the hooligans by hanging in for a historic result in Athens. | |

| Manchester to welcome 20,000 Celts - 29/08/2008
Source : Glasgow Evening Times Manchester is set to welcome up to 20,000 Celtic fans this autumn just months after supporters of Old Firm rivals Rangers were involved in serious rioting in when the city hosted the Uefa Cup final.
Celtic have been drawn against the Premiership champions and Champions League holders Manchester United, Spanish side Villarreal, and Danish champions Aalborg in the group stages of this season's Uefa Champions League.
A spokesman for Manchester City Council said there was no undue alarm in the wake of the draw which sees the Glasgow side travel south to meet the Reds in the away leg on Tuesday, October 21.
advertisementHe said: "The events at the Uefa Cup final were unprecedented, particularly in relation to the number of fans who came to the city.
"On this occasion we are talking about a normal Champions League game and we would expect it to pass off peacefully.
"Celtic have been here on a number of occasions and we do not anticipate any problems."
And a spokesman for the Parkhead side pointed to the great relationship' between the two clubs.
He added: "The behaviour of our travelling fans has been exemplary.
"We played Manchester United two seasons ago in the Champions League and there were no problems.
"We don't envisage any problems this time either."
Police said an assessment of security for the visit of the legions of Celtic fans would be made later today.
In May, parts of Manchester became battle zones after about 200,000 Rangers fans travelled to the city for the game against Zenit St Petersburg which ended in defeat for the Ibrox side.
Around 200 fans attacked police after large screens set up for ticketless supporters failed.
A total of 15 officers were injured, a Russian fan was stabbed and 42 supporters were arrested.

| Cyprus: Hooligans rampage through Nicosia - 30/08/2008
Source : Cyprus Mail
THE CHIEF of police yesterday called on the public to help in identifying the hooligans who ran riot across Nicosia on Thursday night, following European victories for the capital’s two rival football teams.
About 100 hooded young men, believed to be APOEL fans, attacked and caused serious damage to cafés and cars on Makariou Avenue in Nicosia in the early hours of yesterday.
The trouble broke out between 1 and 2am, and involved around 100-150 young men, apparently fans of APOEL celebrating their team’s qualification for the UEFA Cup.
Nicosia Police Chief Kypros Michailides described what happened: “After the end of the Omonia-AEK game and despite the fact that everything had proceeded smoothly, both in the arrival and departure of the supporters and while people were celebrating the victory of their team, shortly after the end of the Red Star Belgrade-APOEL match, some other people, perhaps incited by their own reasons, chose to blacken the victory of their team.
“Wearing hoods and helmets and carrying iron bars, they flooded Makarios Avenue and caused severe damage to cars passing by but also to a particular café,” Michailides said.
“These incidents have saddened me because, whereas the whole of Cyprus should be celebrating the victory of these teams, these people chose to blacken their team’s victory in this particular way.”
Dozens of cars swamped Makarios Avenue to the extent that police cars had no way of passing through.
The hooligans were estimated to number 100-150 persons, but according to police reports there were also other small groups moving through various side-streets, using iron bars and stones to damage cars.
According to Michailides, the trouble-makers were APOEL fans who were targeting cars sporting Omonia banners. He clarified, however, that the hooligans had nothing to do with organised supporters or the team.
The hooded hooligans held chains, iron bars and stones and aggressively attacked supporters sitting at cafés on Makarios Avenue, throwing stones both at punters and passing cars.
Incidents were also reported on Limassol Avenue, where the APOEL club is situated. Hooligans, again masked, threw stones at passing cars.
Four people were slightly injured in the rampage and were taken to hospital for first aid. Specifically, one 44-year old, one 22-year old and two women aged 40 and 21, who were sitting in the outdoor café area, were injured by stones thrown by the hooligans.
The group of thugs then continued by attacking a group of nine people standing on a pavement in Makarios Avenue and used an iron bar to hit a 24-year-old and a 17-year-old. The two men were taken to Nicosia General Hospital and treated for extensive cuts and bruises.
In addition, seven drivers passing through Makarios Avenue reported to the police that the group of trouble-makers caused malicious damage to their cars, while they also attacked and hit three of the drivers.
Police are continuing their investigations, and Michailides yesterday called on the public and particularly those who had been present to help the police so that “we can arrest these people”.

| Sheffield United FC - Cardiff City FC - 30/08/2008
Source : WalesOnline
Bluebirds fans can go to cup clash
WALES’ two biggest football clubs will meet in the Carling Cup – and away fans are expected to be allowed to travel.
Cardiff City and Swansea City were yesterday drawn against each other in the third round of the competition.
They meet at the Liberty Stadium in a midweek fixture next month that will provide South Wales Police with a major headache.
It is understood Cardiff fans will be allowed to attend the game, but only in a “bubble” – meaning they must travel on organised coaches and be escorted into the ground by a convoy of police vehicles, horses and hundreds of police officers.
Top cops have spent months planning how to manage this season’s two Coca Cola Championship meetings between the teams, but officers now have just three weeks to put in place arrangements that will prevent trouble at the cup tie. The round takes place the week starting September 22.
The policing bill is likely to run into hundreds of thousands of pounds as officers bid to prevent the sort of trouble which has marred previous derby matches and yesterday’s away match between Cardiff and Sheffield United.
Four Bluebirds fans were arrested last night after supporters clashed over missiles thrown at a coach carrying Cardiff City fans.
The coach was packed with fans leaving Sheffield United’s Bramall Lane stadium following the teams’ 0-0 draw when Blades supporters allegedly began throwing bottles, cans and a brick at the Welsh vehicle.
Some away fans were injured by flying glass, causing Cardiff supporters to chase the Sheffield hooligans.
South Yorkshire Police said they were expecting to make more arrests.
Cardiff City’s stadium manager, Wayne Nash, said: “The club deplores any disorder at football matches.”
Despite the potential for trouble, supporters from both clubs are looking forward to the derbies.
Just after noon on live television, ex-West Ham United striker Tony Cottee pulled number 29, Swansea, from the home hat and Swans fans held their breath to hear who they would host.
Seconds later former Liverpool legend Phil Thompson drew number six, Cardiff City, from the away hat, and football fans across South Wales began celebrating their dream tie.
Vince Alm of Cardiff City Supporters’ Club said last night: “It’s an interesting draw! I’ve been to loads of derbies but it will be a new experience for the younger generation.
“Football is all about passion, not prawn sandwiches. It will be great occasion for both sides and their supporters.”
Mr Alm said he would rather face the Swans than Premiership big guns such as Chelsea, Manchester United or Arsenal. “I would prefer a local derby, there will be a great atmosphere.
“We went to Liverpool in the League Cup last season and it was dead,” he added.
“We haven’t played Swansea for a few seasons so it will be great to have the chance to earn the bragging rights up for grabs.
“But most of all we will have a good football match between two teams that like to play football.”
He dubbed this season’s trio of matches between the rivals “a mini series”, adding: “This ticks all the boxes.” He also said the policing of football in South Wales was now good enough to prevent a repeat of the trouble which has plagued previous derby fixtures.
Ugo Vallario, of Swansea City Supporters’ Club, welcomed the home tie.
He said: “I’m happy enough with the home draw, but I wanted us to get a big Premiership club.
“When Cardiff came out, I thought: ‘Typical!’ Saying that, I’m not too disappointed with playing Cardiff and it will be good to renew rivalries on the pitch.
“The league matches will have more importance than the cup game. But it should still be a great occasion.”
The Swans hold the upper hand in head-to-head clashes between the sides, with 21 wins against Cardiff’s 18. There have been 14 draws, but the Bluebirds have won both the teams’ only clashes in the League Cup.
The last time the sides met in a league fixture was in April, 1999, when they drew 0-0 at Ninian Park.

A fight erupted on the motorway, where 3 coaches fulled of Kortrijk fans met 1 coach of Mons supporters. On KVK side, 35 lads fronted 15 Mons lads. The fight took place for 5 minutes without any police forces. After the KVK first line retreated, all of them re-entered their coaches. Weapons were used on both sides: belts for Mons and bottles, belts and pepper sprays on KVK side.
