Celtic: Jail for attacking Goram - 07/05/1999

A CELTIC fan who ran towards Rangers keeper Andy Goram during an Old Firm match was yesterday locked up for four months.

Passing sentence Sheriff Kenneth Mitchell handed out a stern warning to other fans who invade the pitch during games.

He told 20-year-old Paul Hannah: "We thought Scottish football had rid itself of this problem.

"The courts will not tolerate this kind of behaviour."

The sheriff's warning comes in the wake of last Sunday's Old Firm shame game when four fans were arrested for running on to the field at Celtic Park.

Glasgow Sheriff Court heard that Hannah, of Haliburton Terrace, Easterhouse, ran at Goram during the Old Firm clash on November 19, 1997.

Two police officers managed to stop him before he reached the Rangers player, but he resisted arrest and struggled violently with the constables.

Over 100 fans were arrested as Rangers clinched the league title at their rivals Celtics ground. A number of fans invaded the pitch during the match and the referee was hit by a coin which required him to receive treatment for a cut to the head. Running battles took place outside the ground and in Glasgow city centre between rival fans resulting in more arrests.

Troubles opposing Den Bosch and Groningen supporters

The day Widzew supporters were going to see their away game in the city of Wodzislaw we were waiting for them on a high way about 25 kilometers from Lodz. Our group consisted of 26 lads (six cars). They were traveling on two buses (about 100 fans). Once they saw us they stopped the bus a few hundred meters away in order to fight. After a while a short fight broke out. As a result of the fight a few Widzew's lads were badly beaten while the rest managed to escape. One of us was hit with a sharp object. None of us had any sharp objects however we had wooden bats. Some of the Widzew supporters escaped into the meadows and forest while the rest trample going back into the buses. Then we decided to get back to our cars. On the way back to the cars we noticed some widzew's supporters going in our direction. Initially we thought that they would like to fight again but it was only illusion. They reconciled with their lose. Therefore we got in our cars and not bothered drove away.
