125 Are Lectured In Peking for Soccer Riot - 26/05/1985

Two of the 127 youths detained after a soccer riot have been arrested and charged, but the police have freed others after lecturing them, the Government said today.

Lu Jian, a spokesman for the Justice Ministry, said that ''some have been freed without charge after education because they committed minor offenses.''

The official New China News Agency said in an article published in all major newspapers that Liu Guofang, 21 years old, and Hua Zeping, 26, had been formally charged with injuring a policeman and damaging motor vehicles in the rampage.

Both were singled out in China Youth News, the organ of the Communist Youth League, as examples of young people with no concept of law.

The riot on April 19 outside Workers Stadium in Peking was set off by Hong Kong's 2-1 victory over the Chinese team in a World Cup qualifying match, which knocked China out of the competition.

Rioters lobbed bottles, garbage and bricks at passing vehicles, flipped cars, smashed windows, spat at foreigners and injured 30 police officers.

Thatcher to Seek Laws To Curb Soccer Violence - 04/06/1985

Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher today announced a crackdown on soccer violence, including moves to ban alcohol at stadiums and extend police powers.

She also promised to help the Belgian authorities catch the British fans who caused the riot that killed 38 people at the European Cup final between Liverpool and Juventus of Turin, Italy, in Brussels last Wednesday.

Mrs. Thatcher said her Government intended to act quickly. To curb drunkenness, it plans to rush through Parliament legislation, already in effect in Scotland, that bars alcohol on buses going to games and in most areas of soccer stadiums.

The Prime Minister said the law would be on the statute books by the start of the new soccer season in August.

Soccer Fans Fight Terror

A soccer fan was seriously injured when he was hit over the head with a brick and kicked in the face.

The incident happened during trouble after Millwall's game at Elm Park, Reading, last Wednesday.

Police have only just been told about the incident and are appealing for witnesses. The victim, Patrick O'Reilly, of Portman Buildings, Pomeroy Street, New Cross, was taken away by relatives after the attack, and later admitted to King's College Hospital, Camberwell.

Mr O'Reilly (35), suffered a broken jaw, and a broken cheek bone but has now been released. He left the Elm Park ground at 9.10 p.m. after the match and was with members of his family and friends when the attack happened.

lan Parsons (21) of Reading, suffered a fractured skull when a brick was thrown through his car windscreen. A Millwall fan is also reported to have been attacked by youths who were wielding baseball bats. This attack also happened near the ground and the victim needed 18 stitches to his wounds.

More than 200 of the 8000 Millwall fans who made to trip to Luton made many damages: seats were ripped off and those fans invaded the pitch, armes with batons, bottles ect... Police forces who tried to restore the calm had to retreat, before charged Millwall fans, who were pushed out of the stadium.
Riots continued outside the stadium and many cars were damaged and windows smashed up.
During the game, the local goalkeeper received a knive near him.
At the end of that day, 31 people were arrested (30 from Millwall), 41 injured (including 31 policemen).

Seventy four hooligans were arrested, 5 policemen wounded and another people was seriously injured. At half-time fans started throwing missiles (bottles, seats ect...) at police officers who were in front of the stand. After the game, riots also erupted in the city-centre.

A Dortmund fan, aged 36 year old, and nicknamed 'SS Siggi', ws condamned at 1 year and 8 months of jail for troubles and racist acts. He was well know for being a leader of the Borussen Front hooligan group.

A group of Birmingham fans turned over a police van. Riots also occured with a local hooligan mob, in the city-centre. Windows were smashed up and some discos were damaged.

The pitch was invaded by 200 local Zulus who tried to attack visitors. Riots also occured outside the stadium. A Manchester fan was stabbed.
