Millwall FC - Swansea City - ??/08/1984

Source: local newspaper

The incidents at Millwall, where no arrests were made, followed the late arrival of a coach load of Swansea fans. They ignored instructions to enter the enclosure reserved for them and went into the Cold Blow Lane end. Scuffles followed and 20 Swansea supporters climbed the touchline fence to be escorted round the pitch. A group of Millwall supporters then came over the Ilderton Road end barrier, and further fighting followed. Millwall chief executive Tony Shaw said, "In this instance it is possible that the FA will decide not to take any action."

After a 5 hour bus journey of drinking copious amounts of alcohol, with a stop off in slough where a fair bit of mischief was carried out ,our retard bus driver finaly found out where milwall actually was.
After a speech by one of the older lads it was decided that we were going on your end or we would have a beating off em when we get home.
So picture the scene,a mix of 30s 20s and teenagers 70 odd in all silently paying to get in the cbl end,the game had already started and the noise was bellowing down the long staircase from the bank. The turnstile operaters were laughing as we were paying to get in knowing full well what was about to happen,as most of us were in (not all,you know who you are )we made our way up to the bank.once at the top of the stairs j shouted sawanzeeeeeeeee next thing the milwall fans just opened up and backed away (natural first reaction)there must of been a 200ft circle of empty terracing around us,not for long though as in a matter of seconds they just steamed in from every angle, men as old as 50 just waded into us non stop for what seemed a lifetime .
I fell over as did many others and took a severe shoeing, managing to get on my feet i fled to the side fencing as most had gone down the front to get over the fence but the milwall fans were already between me and the boys going over on to the pitch.
As i tried to get over the side fence the police ,milwall fans ,all seemed to be laughing the copper saying "go on son you got in here on your own now get out of it on your own",whilst in the side stand it was all going off on the pitch and the ref had taken the players off,i ran through the stand to the fence seperating the away section ,so i jumped up this fence as milwall lads were in hot pursuit,i turned round while just getting to the top of the fence and flicked the vs at em "you aint catching me",how wrong i was ,there was chicken wire from the top of the fence to the roof with no way over, back down for kicking no 2.

Finally i managed to get over the fence to the away end off the pitch ,no mean feat as it was 10 ft high and curled inwards but nothing was stopping me. Once in the relative saftey of our end the millwall fans were going beserk screaming "war, war, war" at us ,very unerving indeed for a 17 year old who's just had 2 kickings which the police seemed to enjoy watching.Luckily after the game the millwall lads seemed to think we came by train and a fucked off down the station after trying to batter down the doors and chucking treetrunks over the roof,so the ob sent us on our way with our tails placed firmly between our legs, but eh at least we had a go!.
Ps: a good friend of mine died a day or two later with a brain heamorage after having a good kicking but no-one knows to this day wether it was because of that.

TERRACE TERROR

POLICE arrested 48 football fans when fighting broke out before and after the Chelsea v Millwall Milk Cup match on Wednesday.

Six Police were taken to hospital after scuffles around Chelsea's ground, on Waterloo Bridge, and at the Elephant and Castle.

The violence began at 4 pm. when Millwall and Chelsea fans clashed at the Elephant and Castle.

PC Paul McKeever was attacked with a broken bottle by a Millwall fan, and was taken to St. Thomas' Hospital, Waterloo.

Further arrests were made and two police injured when street fighting erupted outside Chelsea's ground at Stamford Bridge.

Six more arrests were made when, trouble broke out on Waterloo Bridge, as fans were making their way home.

One fan, John Dennis (17), of Basingstoke appeared at Camberwell Court yesterday charged with assaulting a police officer.

Several officers were caught up in the scuffles and some were injured. After the clashes at the stadium, police herded Millwall fans to the nearby Fulham Broadway tube station.

Scotland Yard was prepared for the trouble and had drafted in hundreds of extra officers.

Lions fight the thugs

Millwall’s peace plan for their Milk Cup showdown with Chelsea at he Den was revealed yesterday.

The club are working closely with Lewisham police to control what is certain to prove their biggest crowd in-six years.

Millwall a expecting an all-ticket gate of over 15,000 for the return leg of the second round clash on October 9.

Both club and police are anxious to avoid a repetition of the violence which marred Tuesday's first leg game, which Millwall lost 3-1.

There was one outbreak inside Stamford Bridge, but the worst incidents occurred outside the ground and led to a total of 48 arrests.

Chief executive Tony Shaw explained, “The plan hinges on completely sealing off the two halves of the ground and ensuring that each set of supporters has clearly recognisable tickets.”

“Millwall fans will only be allowed in at the Cold Blow Lane end of the ground, and all the Chelsea supporters must enter at the Ilderton Road end.”

“Police will he able to check the tickets and know immediately which fans are which.”

Lewisham police had a team of observers at Tuesday's match and Supt Frank Wilkinson said, “We think we will be able to cope. The trouble at Chelsea was not of the extent that would cause us to alter our plans.”

Supt. Wilkinson refused to disclose the number of officers who will be on duty at the match, but the police operation is certain to be the biggest at The Den since Millwall’s 6-1 defeat by Ipswich in the FA Cup sixth round in 1978.

Meanwhile Lions manager George Graham is convinced his side can still go through to the third round draw. He said, “I was proud the way we fought back, and if we can pull goal back early in the match at The Den we'll have a great chance.”

Graham takes his side to Newport for a Third Division outing tomorrow, boosted by the news that central defender Lindsay Smith has returned to fitness. Smith came through Tuesday's reserve clash with Southampton after being side-lined with a gashed shin.
But midfield man Tony Kinsella will be out for another week.

Thug fans in riot

A rising young soccer player was stabbed last night after being ambushed by three fans of a rival team.

Chelsea super boy- Bobby Isaac was attacked outside Millwall's ground, The Den.

The knifing happened just half-an-hour before the return Milk Cup tie between the two London clubs notorious for their hooligan supporters.

Two weeks ago they went to war against each other at the first leg of the match.

And after last night's game, there were more vicious clashes with police as the Old Kent Road was turned into a bloody battlefield.

Stab victim Bobby, 18, was "jumped" from behind as he arrived at The Den to watch his first-team heroes in action.

The Millwall gang asked him which team he supported. He said Millwall and was asked the name of their keeper. Bobby Chelsea's youth team player of the year last season could not remember.

Seconds later, he was slashed across his back from his armpit to the base of his spine.

Centre half Bobby was rushed to hospital where doctors feared he might have a punctured lung. But he was later released after treatment.

Council worker George Bennetts found blood soaked Bobby outside his flat.
Mr Bennetts, 57; said “He staggered towards me, clothes ripped, saying, ‘Can you help me?"

The violence after the match began as Millwall fans tried to smash through a police cordon to reach their hated rivals.

Other officers with riot shields, backed by mounted police and dogs, charged the Millwall mob.

A hail of missiles rained down on the police. And passers-by were knocked to the ground as the hooligans ran wild along the Old Kent Road.

The two sets of supporters had been segregated on opposite sides of the ground.

Hundreds of extra police were on duty to cope with expected trouble.

But as the Chelsea fans were being escorted away from the Den, the Millwall mob advanced.

They rushed Police lines near the Old Kent Road.

One victim with blood pouring from a head wound said “They are just animals”.

The Old Kent Road was blocked as Police cars and ambulances battled to get the injured away from the scene.

Officers chased the rioters through a nearby park and council estate. Half an hour after the game had ended, dozens of police vehicles were still patrolling the area as more fighting erupted.

Young Soccer star in Cup-tie Stabbing

by John Ryall

YOUNG soccer star was brutally stabbed minutes before kick-off in Tuesday's Millwall and Chelsea Milk Cup tie.

And later there were outbreaks of violence and vandalism in New Cross and the Old Kent Road - despite one of the biggest police -operations ever mounted around the Den.

Chelsea reserve Robert Isaac, 18, was asked outside the ground which team he supported. He said Millwall - but faltered when asked to name the players.

Seconds later he was jumped from behind and slashed from shoulder to waist with a razor or Stanley knife.

Hospital

Yesterday, Wednesday, Robert - a rising star of the reserve team - was home after hospital treatment. His leather jacket had prevented far more serious injury.

Police took every precaution before, during and after the match to avoid a bloody clash between the
arch rival fans.

Tickets - coloured different for each team to ensure total segregation in the stands - had to be bought by October 2 and only ticket holders were admitted.

After the match around 3,000 Chelsea supporters were rounded up by mounted police and taken to South Bermondsey station under heavy escort.

There they were herded into special policed trains. But some Chelsea supporters gave police the slip and there were 19 arrests as fans clashed around New Cross Gate station and the Old Kent Road.

Police said none of the injured needed hospital treatment Supt Francis Wilkinson of Lewisham police said biggest crowd for six years - had been "generally kept well apart and well under control."

"I think we can claim the operation was a success. Reports of riots after the match are nonsense."

Meanwhile Millwall chairman Alan Thorne is furious at Fleet Street stories of 'riots'.

"All of it is unconfirmed, sheer nonsense," he said. And he's written to the Daily Express banning its reporters from the Den.

All Right on the Night!

by Rob Smith

I WENT in to the Lion's Den this week ... and came out unscathed.

Going by Press previews of Millwall’s Milk Cup battle with Chelsea, I expected the biggest explosion of violence since the Brixton riots.

I hate to disappoint you, but I didn't see a fist thrown in anger. The one really had incident happened outside the ground, when Chelsea's teenage reserve player Robert Isaac received a 12in. gash from a Stanley knife. He was released from Lewisham Hospital after treatment. For the record, 19 people were arrested at Tuesday's game - nine supposedly 'fans' of Millwall and 10 of Chelsea.

They were charged with various crimes, including criminal damage, possessing an offensive weapon, and threatening behaviour. The confrontation between two sets of fans with fearsome reputations - 48 were arrested during the first leg at Stamford Bridge - inspired a massive police operation.

In three meetings with Millwall, a police peace plan was drawn up running to six closely-typed pages, detailing every move of the officers on duty.

As a-result, all roads leading to The Den were sealed off, with police manning the barriers to check fans tickets - blue for Millwall, pink for Chelsea.

Police at New Cross Gate underground station were kept busy relaying the latest movements of Chelsea supporters to the operation's HQ, inside the Cold Blow Lane ground.

Horses, dogs and Police with riot shields waited for the first sign of trouble. A plan to shepherd the advancing fans to their separate entrances seemed to be working well.

Down the lightless Hornshay Street, the mounted police high on grassy banks were Orwellian in their effect.

Most fans were searched before the turnstiles, and the flood lights brought the night alive as the pitch came into view.

The Chelsea end was not full. Some youths felt let down at the turn out, others surprised that so many had dared to come at all.

The away support made up roughly one quarter of the 11,517 crowd - the biggest at The Den for six years.

All were quiet when Millwall took the lead in the seventh minute. A trio in front of me were already planning their escape, deciding which mode of transport would get them north of the Thames quickest.

Chelsea soon equalised, and with the Lions needing three more goals to win overall, the lads behind the metal cages judged the result a formality.

English teams banned after Heysel - 31/05/1985

Source : BBC

The Football Association has banned English clubs from playing in Europe following the Heysel stadium tragedy two days ago in which 39 fans died.
The Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher, supported the ban which was announced by FA officials outside Number 10 Downing Street and called for tougher sentences on convicted football hooligans.

The match went ahead despite the tragedy and Juventus won 1-0.

The ban, decided after the return from Mexico of FA chairman Bert Millichip and secretary Ted Croker, will affect Everton, Manchester United, Liverpool, Norwich City, Tottenham Hotspur and Southampton. They are all due to compete in major contests next season.

"It is now up to English football to put its house in order," said Mr Croker outside Number 10.

Mr Millichip acknowledged the ban was a pre-emptive move and that Uefa (the Union of European Football Associations) would have imposed it anyway.

"It was very important that the FA took positive action and immediately," he said, saying it was the most difficult decision he had ever had to take.

The Labour leader of the Opposition, Neil Kinnock, said the ban of English teams would only benefit those who caused the "murderous riot" in Belgium.

The Football League which was not consulted is also opposed to the decision.

The Belgian government has already banned all British clubs from its territory until further notice.

Liverpool, whose fans were blamed for much of the violence, had decided to pull out of next season's Uefa cup competition before the FA announcement.

Chelsea did briefly run you on the Stretford end at the end of the game. Before the game i got caught up in a mob of united following a CFC escort. As we approached the away end turnstiles you lot started flapping and got legged.People around me were NOT happy. Same season at the bridge CFC infiltrated you lot on the north terrace too.Cue the red spin machine.

Manchester City - Oxford City - 84/85

Source: forum - Oxford view

Loads of verbals, coins etc going across seperating fences, lasting memory though was of particularily mouthy manc wearing bright white jumper being hit by a flying pint of beer, looked near to tears.
On final whistle, after being robbed 1-0,Oxford tried to steam out to some succsess, old bill knocked off horse and stone thowing battle followed with City.
O.B got control back, and we got a dicey escort out.
