Ouaddou files complaint after racial slurs
Valenciennes captain Abdeslam Ouaddou has filed a legal complaint after being racially abused by a fan during a Ligue 1 match at Metz on Saturday, his club said.
A furious Ouaddou walked towards the stands at halftime to remonstrate with a Metz spectator who had repeatedly insulted him, Valenciennes said in a statement on Sunday. He was forced back to the pitch by stewards and received a yellow card.
The Morocco defender filed a complaint immediately after the match.
"The club supports Abdes (Abdeslam) in this ordeal," the statement read. "Such insults should never take place, in a stadium or elsewhere."
The 38-year-old supporter, whose identity was not revealed, was being questioned by police, Metz club sources said.
"The words were very strong," Ouaddou told reporters after the match. "I told the referee about it but he told me to concentrate on the match. The insults continued so I walked towards that person. I wanted an explanation."
Metz said they had also filed a complaint and the French Professional Football League (LFP) said it would do as well.
LFP president Frederic Thiriez suggested referee Damien Ledentu could have stopped the match.
"Regarding refereeing, instructions were given at the start of the season on how to react in case of racist incidents," Thiriez said in a statement.
"The referees now have more room to act and can go as far as stopping a match, temporarily or definitely."
The LFP's disciplinary committee will meet on Thursday to study the incident and the referee's game report.
French Sports Minister Roselyne Bachelot-Narquin and her junior minister Bernard Laporte also hinted in a joint statement that the referee had been wrong not to halt play.
"Roselyne Bachelot-Narquin and Bernard Laporte insist on the fact that immediate measures can and must be taken by match officials after the first signs of physical or verbal violence," the joint statement read.

Alleged racial slurs prompt suit
Valenciennes captain Abdeslam Ouaddou is suing a fan who allegedly shouted racist remarks at him during a French league match at Metz.
"The police officers asked me to file a complaint so that this person could be punished and maybe banned from the stadium," Ouaddou said Saturday night after the game, which Metz won 2-1. The Morocco defender climbed into the stands to argue with the Metz fan at the Saint-Symphorien stadium.
Ouaddou was given a yellow card for leaving the field during play and was later questioned by the police. The fan was also questioned.
The head of France's soccer league, Frederic Thiriez, said on RTL radio Sunday that the league would file a legal complaint against the fan.
Metz president Carlo Molinari said Sunday the club had also filed suit against the fan.
"We cannot prevent an isolated act such as this one," Molinari said.
After the match, several chunks of concrete were thrown at the windshield of a bus of Valenciennes fans, lightly injuring a 9-year-old child. Two people were detained, Metz security director Jacky Ancel said.

The two teams have been drawn together in the last 16 stage of the Champions League, with the first leg in Rome. The young fan has been hospitalised after suffering several cuts to his backside following a bust-up with fans on a square in the Italian capital near the stadium. | Mancini Attacked By Inter Fans - - 19/02/2008
Source : Goal.com
Roberto Mancini was verbally attacked by a herd of Inter fans at Liverpool Airport last night, and was almost involved in a physical confrontation, according to reports in Italy.
The Nerazzurri face an uphill task to qualify for the quarter finals of the Champions League after their 2-0 first leg last 16 loss to Liverpool at Anfield.
According to Tuttosport, Mancini was set upon by a group of angry Inter supporters, who hurled abuse at the coach, blaming him for the defeat.
Mancini did not stay quiet, and is said to have reacted angrily by retuning the insults back at the fans.
The situation became so serious that security staff entered the scene and were ready to intervene, fearing that a fully-blown physical confrontation was about to break out between Mancini and the supporters.
Eventually the ex-Lazio boss chose to walk away from the incident.
This is the second report of unrest among the Inter camp, following Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s angry comments about Marco Materazzi, in which he blamed the defender for Inter’s defeat.
Materazzi was harshly sent off after half-an-hour for two yellow cards, forcing the Nerazzurri to play two-thirds of the game with 10 men.

| German police plan use of helicopters to fight hooligans - 19/02/2008
Source : International Herald Tribune
The German state of Saxony plans to combat hooligan violence by assigning a district attorney and a camera loaded onto a helicopter to monitor soccer games.
Saxony, whose clubs in Leipzig and Dresden are notorious for fan violence, could employ the new tactics for the first time Sunday when LOK Leipzig hosts Kickers Markkleeberg in a county league match.
Saxony police president Bernd Merbitz said many other German states are closely watching the experiment.
"We are the first to use a helicopter under very hot conditions," Merbitz said.
LOK Leipzig's fans were responsible for one of the more notorious hooligan incidents last season.
The players and coach threatened last February to walk out of the next game if the hooligans showed up again after 800 attacked police, leaving 39 officers and six fans injured, along with 21 vandalized police cars.
The helicopter camera will help identify the violent fans.
"Usually we only see the first row," Merbitz said. "When a stone flies out of the crowd, nobody can find out who it was."

| Football disorder suspects hunted by police - 20/02/2008
Source : Halifax Evening Courier
Pictures of 10 suspected West Yorkshire football hooligans are being circulated by police in a bid to catch them. It follows trouble at Leeds United's match against Millwall at Elland Road last year when missiles were thrown and officers attacked.
A number of people threw missiles before kick-off in October last year and had to be dispersed by police officers.
After the game, several hundred people gathered outside the stadium and officers trying to clear the area were attacked.
The disorder continued for about 30 minutes until the area was cleared.
Detective Inspector Phill Wright, of West Yorkshire Police, said: "Four months after the disorder, they probably think we have forgotten all about it.
"Today we are releasing photos of people suspected of been involved and are appealing to anyone who recognises them to let us know. Callers will not be asked to give evidence, we simply want to know who these people in the photographs are. If you see yourself in the poster, contact your nearest police station immediately."
He added: "There is no place for disorder of any kind in West Yorkshire and anyone who has been involved in this type of offence should be warned we could be coming for you next."

| Atletico Madrid - Bolton Wanderers - 21/02/2008Source : SkyNews + BoltonNews + Getty Images Bolton Complain Of Attacks On FansBolton Wanderers have complained to European football's governing body after two of their fans reportedly suffered head wounds during clashes with Spanish police. The violence took place during the away leg of their UEFA Cup tie against Atletico Madrid, which ended in a goalless draw that saw the Spanish team eliminated. The Barclays Premier League club claims supporters were subjected to "a number of assaults and unprovoked baton charges before, during, and after the game" at Vicente Calderon stadium. Reports said two fans suffered head wounds and others had to be taken to hospital. Fans claimed they were beaten up by police wearing riot gear, who started attacking them when some of the travelling supporters spilled out of the section of ground in which they were standing. The club will now work with Greater Manchester Police and the British Embassy to establish the precise course of events. Bolton chairman Phil Gartside has vowed to take the issue to the "highest level" in pursuit of an explanation. "I have great sympathy for any of our supporters who have been injured by what is clearly an overreaction by the Spanish police," he said. "Our fans gave us magnificent support on the night and this has taken the shine off what has been a momentous evening in the club's history." Ill-feeling between the clubs followed a first leg that Bolton won 1-0 with some heavy tackling that angered the Spanish team and saw their Argentine top scorer, Sergio Aguero, sent off for spitting. ************************************************************* Source : THE SUN BOLTON will demand a UEFA probe after brutal Spanish riot police attacked their fans last night. Gary Megson’s Premier League strugglers produced an heroic rearguard action to make the last 16 for the first time in their history. But the shine was taken off Wanderers’ glory by the heavy-handed cops, who waded into a section of the 3,500 travelling fans during the first half at the Vicente Calderon Stadium. A Bolton spokesman said: “We will look to speak with the police, embassy staff and the club’s travelling stewards to ascertain the facts. “But in the first instance it appears the Bolton fans were blameless in all this.” ************************************************************* Source : Mail Police vs local fans ************************************************************* | |

| Manchester police to help Bolton report - 22/02/2008
Source : The Press Association
Greater Manchester Police have offered to assist in the compilation of a report on the treatment of Bolton fans by Spanish police during the club's UEFA Cup game against Atletico Madrid.
The club complained that fans were "subjected to a number of assaults and unprovoked baton charges before, during, and after the game" at the Vicente Calderon in the Spanish capital - where Bolton earned a 0-0 draw to qualify for the last 16.
Bolton have lodged an official complaint with UEFA about the incident, and GMP released the following statement: "Following the trouble at the match between Bolton and Atletico Madrid (on) Thursday, February 21 2008, Greater Manchester Police have been in discussions with the club and Consulate, and will assist in completing a comprehensive report in order to present all the facts to UEFA."
The statement continued: "GMP had a senior police officer present at the match, Chief Superintendent David Lea, who praised the conduct of the fans and has raised his concerns about the conduct of Spanish officers with his counterparts in Madrid.
"Greater Manchester Police works closely with our colleagues in Europe to share best practice for the policing of fixtures."
The statement issued earlier by the club read: "The directors of Bolton Wanderers Football Club are upset and disturbed at the apparent over-zealous and disproportionate actions of the Spanish police towards our supporters during Thursday night's UEFA Cup return leg at Atletico Madrid.
"The club's fans were subjected to a number of assaults and unprovoked baton charges before, during, and after the game, in addition to the aggressive use of police horses to manoeuvre fans towards the Vicente Calderon stadium.
"Bolton Wanderers has launched an official protest with UEFA and its security delegates, who witnessed the behaviour of the local police force, and the club is currently in liaison with the Greater Manchester Police and the British Embassy to ascertain further information.
"Bolton Wanderers supporters have an impeccable reputation and an excellent record of good behaviour when travelling abroad to European matches, and the club believes the actions of the Madrid police are entirely unacceptable."
UEFA have so far been unavailable for comment.

| Lyon - Manchester United - 20/02/2008Source : Mail About 40-50 Lyon put the windows through of some bar the night before the match. The bar was mainly barmies but when a few reds got outside the Lyon lot had it on their toes. Lyon took the easy option and didn't come near to where most of our lot were. Still fair play to them. A small firm of reds had some fun before the game (not to far from the ground) and done more than ok against larger numbers of Lyon. After the game a firm of Lyon attacked a bar with some reds in that didn't go in near the ground. Again mainly barmies in the bar but at least they had a pop. A lot of reds didn't even go near the ground as it was bang on top with OB. Their was no chance of getting in with the snides that were knocking about. Fair play to Lyon for having a pop but they weren't up to much (so I'm told). And fuck me I fell rough today after a heavy 2 day session over there. ************************************************************* Source: AFP In total, 47 fans were arrested. | |

| Historic night for supporters ends in violence - 22/02/2008Source : This Is Lancashire SPANISH riot police were branded "animals" after they laid into Bolton fans with their batons, marring a historic night for the Wanderers..The police attacked supporters before, during and after the UEFA Cup game against Atletico Madrid last night. The violence took the edge off Wanderers' triumph in reaching the last 16 of the UEFA Cup for the first time in their history. Police on horseback had charged at fans outside the stadium before the game, and inside the Vicente Calderon Stadium the violence continued. It intensified after the whistle had blown on the 0-0 draw with fans bombarded by coins from opposing fans and police wading in. Supporter Janet Peel, aged 44, said: "One man had his finger broken and there were many others needing stitches. advertisement"The police were treating fans like animals. "I spent hours getting here and I've spent a lot of money. People were having a good time today until we got to the stadium. "They have their batons up for no reason and it's utter chaos outside." Atletico Madrid fans also fought among themselves, throwing chairs. Gordon Shaw, aged 40, said: "It was just scenes of utter chaos. The police were hitting out at people for nothing and the rival fans were crazy." According to police sources, 14 fans are thought to have been taken to hospital. It is understood that almost 4,000 Bolton fans had travelled to the game. Fans were taken to hospital last night with variety of injuries, according to witnesses. Grant Sanderson, aged 20, from Howe Bridge, Atherton, said: "We were walking towards the stadium before the game and my dad was in front. He stepped off the pavement to get around some parked cars and then there was chaos. "My dad was on the floor as the police laid into him. He was covered in blood. He got up and we went inside but as we were walking up the stairs, he collapsed and had to go to hospital." Colin Townsend, aged 60, from Westhoughton, said: "The police were provoking the crowd. There were batons flying in every direction. "I'm an old man so I took my cap and coat off and approached the police to show I was no threat. They pushed me down some stairs and hit me. I hurt my elbow and I have a bruise across my back." Cllr John Walsh, Tory councillor for Astley Bridge, who was also at the game, said: "It was over the top and the police just waded in. "As usual, this incident has overshadowed a good result but I am delighted to see Wanderers go through nevertheless." Chris Houghton, aged 42, from Deane, said: "Despite all of this, I still feel fantastic. It was a great result." The violence mirrors that suffered by Aberdeen fans last December when one fan was beaten unconscious and spent the night in intensive care. Much of that trouble began when skinheads from the neo-fascist Frente Atletico group of hooligans staged an attack on Aberdeen fans outside a bar. It is not known if those thugs - who hid their faces with scarves and balaclavas - were also involved with last night's problems. Wanderers are looking into the heavy-handed tactics of the police. A club spokesman said: "We are looking to speak to the police, the Embassy staff and the club's travelling stewards to ascertain the facts, but in the first instance it appears that the Bolton fans are blameless." Chief Supt Dave Lea of Bolton Police, who travelled to Spain with Wanderers fans, said: "All I can say is that this has been a pattern of behaviour in previous games in Madrid. "We have worked desperately hard with the Home Office and the club but, sadly, the Spanish police resorted to the old pattern. This will be the subject of a very strong report to the various authorities. "There were reports of fans being pickpocked too." | |

| UEFA Await Details Of Police 'Assaults' - 22/02/2008Source : SportingLife.com UEFA are waiting to receive the report of the match delegate and security officer before deciding whether to take action against what Bolton saw as the "overzealous and disproportionate" mistreatment of their fans by Spanish police. Wanderers have lodged a complaint with European football's governing body after their fans came in for some rough treatment from police during and after last night's UEFA Cup last 32 second leg against Atletico Madrid. Spanish police said on Friday the problems at the match were "just the usual at any football game" and refused to respond to Bolton's allegations. UEFA are not yet able to respond to the complaint until they receive all the relevant reports, which may not reach their headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland, until early next week. Greater Manchester Police, whose Chief Superintendent David Lea was in the Vicente Calderon stadium to witness the Spanish police's behaviour, insist Bolton fans were not at fault and pledged to help the club compile a report to UEFA. This is not the first time this season complaints have been made about Spanish police at the same venue, with Aberdeen writing to UEFA in November after they felt their fans were mistreated during their group game against Atletico. UEFA said on Friday they were still investigating the circumstances surrounding that complaint and had not yet decided whether to open disciplinary proceedings. Bolton complained earlier on Friday that fans were "subjected to a number of assaults and unprovoked baton charges before, during, and after the game", which Wanderers drew 0-0 to advance to the last 16 with a 1-0 aggregate win. The club statement continued: "Bolton Wanderers has launched an official protest with UEFA and its security delegates, who witnessed the behaviour of the local police force, and the club is currently in liaison with the Greater Manchester Police and the British Embassy to ascertain further information. "Bolton Wanderers supporters have an impeccable reputation and an excellent record of good behaviour when travelling abroad to European matches, and the club believes the actions of the Madrid police are entirely unacceptable." GMP indicated their attention to support Bolton's cause and released this statement on Friday: "Following the trouble at the match between Bolton and Atletico Madrid last night, Thursday, 21 February 2008, Greater Manchester Police have been in discussions with the club and Consulate, and will assist in completing a comprehensive report in order to present all the facts to UEFA. "GMP had a senior police officer present at the match, Chief Superintendent David Lea, who praised the conduct of the fans and has raised his concerns about the conduct of Spanish officers with his counterparts in Madrid. "Greater Manchester Police works closely with our colleagues in Europe to share best practice for the policing of fixtures." The British Embassy spokesman said: "The Embassy is concerned about last night's incidents and we are continuing to liaise with Greater Manchester Police and Bolton Wanderers FC, and we are awaiting for UEFA's official report before deciding on what course of action to take. "There are no arrests as far as we know." The embassy confirmed two fans were taken to hospital and discharged the same day, although it was not known whether these were injuries suffered in relation to the police treatment. Wanderers will now face Portuguese side Sporting Lisbon in the last 16. | |

| Croatia champions cancel trip to Belgrade after riots - 22/02/2008Source : Reuters Croatian champions Cibona Zagreb cancelled a trip to Belgrade on Friday after Croatia's foreign ministry said it would be too risky in the light of recent unrest in both countries. Rioters in Belgrade attacked several foreign embassies on Thursday, including Croatia's, after a mass rally against Western support for Kosovo's declaration of independence from Serbia last Sunday. A group of Croatian soccer fans burnt the Serbian flag in Zagreb's main square on Thursday and police arrested 44 people. "Following our own assessment of the situation and recommendations of our ambassador in Serbia, the ministry advised Cibona not to travel to Belgrade," said a Croatian ministry statement carried by state news agency Hina. Cibona were already halfway to Belgrade when they were advised to turn back. They were due to face the top Serbian team, Partizan Belgrade, in a regional championship game on Saturday. Partizan president Djordje Colovic told Serbian news agency Tanjug the safety of Croatian players was not at risk and that his club would demand the match be awarded to them. Croatia's foreign ministry advised its citizens earlier this week to be careful if travelling to Serbia or Kosovo and to avoid any large public gatherings. Croatia broke away from Serbian-led Yugoslavia in 1991 and waged a war with its own Serb minority until 1995. Croatia and Serbia have established diplomatic ties but sports competitions involving the two countries have remained fraught with tension and the potential for violence. | |

Fighting broke out between rival Danish, Swedish and Dutch hooligans at a pub in central Helsingborg on Thursday evening.
Police made two arrests and removed a further 24 people from the area after Thursday's UEFA Cup match between Helsingborg and PSV Einhoven, Skånska Dagbladet reports.
Many of the people involved in the fighting were supporters of the two clubs that met at the Olympia stadium.
PSV Eindhoven progressed to the last sixteen after winning the game 2-1 (4-1 on aggregate).
