| Austrians fear English hooligans at Euro 2008 - 01/02/2008Source : Reuters A fifth of Austrians say they are worried about English hooligans disrupting Euro 2008, despite the fact that England will not be at the tournament. Their concern was revealed in a survey published by Vienna University which focused on local hopes and fears for the June event being jointly hosted by Austria and Switzerland. English hooligans were cited as the main potential source of trouble by 20 percent of 1,500 Austrians who were surveyed two months after England failed to qualify. Turkish, German and Polish fans, all of whose teams have qualified, were seen as the next most likely to cause trouble. Overall, hooliganism came out as the Austrians' sixth biggest concern behind overstrained public transport, excessive drinking and increased levels of waste, traffic, noise and vandalism. On a more positive note, more than three quarters of those surveyed expect the tournament to benefit restaurants, tourism, trade and the image of Austria abroad. In a country where Alpine skiing still attracts far more spectators and television viewers than soccer, only 40 percent of those surveyed described themselves as football fans. There was some reassuring news for tournament organisers, with 77 percent saying they would follow at least some of the matches. WC'2006

During this fight, a few vehicles were also set to fire. ************************************************************* Source : Goal Hooliganism Mars Betis-Depor EncounterDeportivo's Saturday win at Real Betis was overshadowed somewhat by severe hooliganism incidents near the Manuel Ruiz de Lopera stadium... Hooligans representing both teams clashed near the stadium prior to kickoff, with several injured fans being taken to hospital. Furthermore, two cars were burnt during the melee, although there was relatively little property damage to buildings. Videos produced by Marca showed the resultant carnage, while their reports pointed out that just four people had been arrested. The trouble took place on Calle Tajo, a street in the vicinity of the stadium often used by mingling fans prior to matches for peaceful purposes. The Liga has yet to speak out over the incident. Deportivo won the scrappy match 1-0 thanks to a first-half tap-in from Pablo Amo.

Police needed to break up confrontation between Saints and Palace fans
POLICE had to seperate Saints and Crystal Palace fans during yesterday's Championship clash at Selhurst Park.
The flashpoint happened towards the end of the 1-1 draw shortly after Stern John had equalised for Saints.
One Saints fan present said: "I didn't see how it started because I was watching the game, but I looked down to the corner and saw the police going in with batons. advertisement
"It was all over pretty quickly.
"The police were down in the corner anyway by the gap which seperated the Palace fans behind the goal and the Saints fans down in the corner."

Palace fans crossed a wall into a no go zone and started throwing plastic drinks bottles into the saints fans. Some Saints fans started throwing them back. Unfortunately the steward situation at Palace is nothing like as professional as it is at St Marys, the stewards and Police were very slow to remove the offending Palace "fans" and stop the situation. Far more bottles were thrown at the Saints than thrown back. The game at 1-1 was still going on with minutes left, either side could of still scored at this point and it was a disappointing distraction, why do these people go, it seems not to watch the game. The situation was worse after the final whistle it should and could of been sorted sooner.

Police intervened when the First Great Western service from London Paddington to Swansea came to a stop at Westbury station.
A man in his mid 30s, from the Bristol area, was arrested on suspicion of common assault.

| HOOLIGANS SHAME NAME OF THE CLUB - 08/02/2008Source : Grimsby Evening Telegraph Police have said they "will not tolerate" football hooliganism after a pitch invasion led to the arrest of 11 men. Investigations are ongoing into a brawl which started during a pivotal Grimsby Town match with Chesterfield last month. Eleven Town fans were arrested after some entered the home sides' stand and others tried to invade the pitch, as the Mariners beat the Spireites 2-1. The police's warning comes as Grimsby Town prepare to face Chesterfield, at Blundell Park, tomorrow. As reported, GTFC chairman John Fenty branded those involved as "cowards" and "idiots". "They are clearly cowards and not fans of the club, otherwise they would understand the damage they do the game," he said. The trouble began when Town fans entered the Kop end of Saltergate and began singing. A scuffle then broke out and some away fans attempted to invade the pitch. A spokesperson for Derbyshire Police confirmed four people were arrested on suspicion of attempted pitch encroachment, two for breaching a football banning order, one for being drunk and disorderly, one for affray and three for public disorder offences. Humberside Police spokeswoman Danielle Waite said the man arrested for being drunk and disorderly was handed a fixed penalty notice. The rest have been bailed pending further inquiries. Ms Waited added: "The majority of Grimsby Town fans are well behaved and are a credit to the club. "Humberside Police will not tolerate violence and disorder. Reported incidents are investigated and appropriate action taken." Derbyshire Police have said they will liaise with Humberside Police in a post-match investigation. | |

| Hooligans banned from Charlton matches - 08/02/2008
Source : News Shopper
FOUR football hooligans have been banned from Charlton Athletic and England matches for three years.
John Brown, aged 32, of Blaker Court, Charlton, and Charlie Bevan, aged 21, from Herne Hill, were given banning orders at City of Westminster Magistrates' Court on February 7.
Brothers Liam Byrne, aged 21, and Shane Byrne, aged 20, both of Steele Avenue, Greenhithe, were also given banning orders.
During a police operation the men were seen provoking opposition fans.
They would go into pubs used by opposition fans to pick fights and associate with other known football thugs.
The men were each given Football Banning Orders and warned if they come within 500m of Charlton's home and away matches and England games, they face up to six months in jail.
When England travel abroad for matches they must also surrender their passports to police.
None of the men opposed the orders.

advertisementAnyone caught with drink in the alcohol exclusion zone, stretching from the city centre to the stadium, will have it confiscated and drunk supporters will not be allowed into the stadium.
Chief Supt Janette McCormick, of Greater Manchester Police, said: "My officers will take robust action against troublemakers so this minority of people do not spoil the day for the true supporters."

| Nine Liverpool FC fans banned for life after train brawl - 09/02/2008
Source : Liverpool Daily Post
NINE Liverpool FC hooligans will be banned from Anfield for life following a mass brawl on a train.
The gang was sentenced last week in connection with violence on an Arriva train after a pre-season friendly.
After the hearing, Liverpool FC said the nine fans given banning orders would have their season tickets and fan cards removed.
The violence happened after a game between Liverpool and Wrexham at the Racecourse Ground on July 7 last year, which Liverpool won 3-2.
As the train travelled between Wrexham and Chester, a fight broke out and two men from Wales were badly injured.
The victims, both 23, from Llanllyfni and Pen y Groes, suffered facial injuries after being punched and kicked several times.
Now, the fans hit with banning orders will be barred from Anfield and stopped from buying tickets.
Ged Poynton, stadium manager at Liverpool Football Club, said: “We are fully supporting the actions taken by British Transport Police in prosecuting those travelling by train who were involved in an unprovoked attack on two innocent victims.
“Any of the ten convicted of this football-related disorder who receive banning orders and are proven to be Liverpool supporters, will be banned from Anfield for life and their season tickets or fan cards removed permanently.
“Liverpool Football Club will continue to work with the appropriate authorities to combat football related disorder amongst its supporters whether it occurs within stadia or travelling to or from games.”
The nine men are John Thornbury, 43, of St Mary’s Grove, Walton; Lee Charnock,18, of Westview Avenue, Huyton; Ian Francis Sefton, 21, of Churchdown Road, Dovecot; Gary Crook, 18, of Lyme Cross Road, Huyton; a 17-year-old youth, from Prenton, Wirral; Thomas Joyce, 18, of Woodland Drive, Huyton; Terence Astley, 18 and Gary Astley, 19, both of Millom Avenue, Prescot; Paul Power, 20, of Anzio Road, Liverpool; and a 16-year-old boy from Windle, St Helens.
The tenth, who was not given a banning order, is Gary Crook, 18, of Lyme Cross Road, Huyton, who pleaded guilty to a public order offence and received a two-month curfew.
Inspector Steve Lewis, of British Transport Police, said: “These verdicts send a clear message that we will seek the toughest penalties, including football banning orders to protect the public from football hooligans.
“This was a completely unprovoked attack on two innocent victims by a large group of so-called football supporters.”

| Greece: Soccer fan clubs get the boot - 07/02/2008Source: http://www.phantis.com Autonomous clubs for soccer supporters are to be banned and replaced by less fanatic groupings, according to a draft law aimed at preventing sports-related violence that was presented by the government yesterday. The bill aims to ensure that the new supporter associations will be strictly controlled by the sports teams they back. Clubs will also be made responsible for security in stadiums, along the lines of a model successfully introduced in the UK in the 1990s. “The government’s main aim is to stamp out violence so that families can return to the stadiums,” said Yiannis Ioannidis, the deputy culture minister in charge of sports. “It is not a panacea for the problem [of violence] but it is a tool. We owe it to our children.” The draft law also proposes tougher penalties for people convicted of violent acts inside sports grounds. The change in the law follows an increase in soccer violence in recent years, most tragically the death of a Panathinaikos supporter during clashes last year. | |
