Wolves: Football hooligan back behind bars - 20/02/2008

Source: http://www.expressandstar.com

A Wolves hooligan who punched a rival in the face after enjoying an early release from jail is today behind bars.

A judge has now questioned why bricklayer Stephen Howe was not sent straight back to jail after being caught taking part in a brawl in Wolverhampton city centre. District Judge Martin Brown jailed the 38-year-old for four months and banned him from matches for six years after hearing how he lashed out after his team lost to Birmingham City at Molineux last April.

Howe appeared before Wolverhampton Magistrates Court yesterday where he admitted a public order offence. The court heard he had been arrested for fighting while on early release from a 12-month sentence for violence involving Wolves fans in Leicester Square. “He should have been recalled,” the judge said. “A question mark arises as to why he wasn’t.”

Howe, who is well-known to anti-hooligan police, was caught on CCTV marching through the city centre with dozens of other troublemakers following Wolves’ 3-2 defeat by Blues.

Surveillance footage showed fans chanting and swearing as they vaulted barriers on the ring road at Stafford Street, near KwikFit.

The court heard there was a “hostile atmosphere” as Howe, of Bee Lane, Fordhouses, joined 30 to 40 yobs trying to confront the visiting supporters.

He was seen running and punching Blues fan Bobby Fuller on the left cheek. Howe claimed he struck out because the victim had a knife but no weapon was recovered.

Jailing Howe for 16 weeks, District Judge Martin Brown said: “You are before somebody who is a football fan.

“Members of the public who support football look somewhat despicably on people like you who bring a bad name to the sport,” added the judge.

The Leicester Square violence during 2004, which a court ruled was not linked to football, saw Wolves supporters fighting with strangers.

Cardiff: Sixteen face banning orders after Sheffield - 27/02/2008

Source: South Wales Echo

SIXTEEN Cardiff City supporters are facing football banning orders after being arrested before the Bluebirds clash with Sheffield Wednesday.

The men were among 30 arrested in Sheffield before the game on Saturday and are accused of public order offences.

All 16 are due to appear in court in March and will face applications for a football banning order.

A spokeswoman for South Yorkshire police said: “The men, all believed to be Cardiff City supporters, were arrested following an incident in the city centre about an hour before the match started.”

Of the other 14 arrested, one man was released and bailed pending further enquiries and 10 men were released without charge.

Two men gave witness statements and were released and one man was given a caution for drunk and disorderly behaviour.

City fan Gwyn Davies, of Aberdare, said he knew the group and that they would be contesting the charges.

Greece: Ten hooligans up for fan murder - 27/02/2008

Surce : Kathimerini

A total of 26 people have been identified as having taken part in a mass brawl between Panathinaikos and Olympiakos fans last March and 10 of these are set to stand trial for allegedly killing a man during the clash, according to the results of a prosecutors investigation made public yesterday.

Panathinaikos fan Michalis Filopoulos was beaten and stabbed to death in Paeania, east of Athens, during some of the most violent fighting between hooligans that Greece has experienced.

The pitched battle had been prearranged by fans of both clubs and took place before a women’s volleyball match. Prosecutor Aristides Fragiadakis suggests in his report that high-ranking hooligans on both sides had been planning the meeting for a number of days.

Of those that the prosecutor recommends should stand trial, 25 are Olympiakos fans and one is a Panathinaikos fan.

Ten of the Olympiakos fans will likely be charged with participating in the murder of 22-year-old Filopoulos. Five of these fans are allegedly employed by Olympiakos.

Two of the 10 suspects thought to have participated in the murder of Filopoulos, a taxi driver and a known drug addict, have been remanded in custody.

A musician from the Nikaia neighborhood near Piraeus, where Olympiakos has its roots, is also one of those likely to be charged as the prosecutor has allegedly identified him on mobile phone footage of the incident.

The unnamed suspect is seen standing over a bleeding Filopoulos and swearing at him.

The investigation has run into a number of legal obstacles and has been hampered by the unwillingness of some hardcore fans who took part in the fight to give information to authorities about other supporters.

The case is now in its final phase before coming to court as the 48-page report will be submitted to the Council of Appeal Court Judges, which will decide who should face charges.

Hooligans banned after violence - 28/02/2008

Source : BBC News

Three men have been banned from every football match in England and Wales for three years after trouble flared between Coventry City and Preston fans.
Steward Martin Harris, 51, suffered a heart attack an hour after dealing with the violence outside the Ricoh Arena last September.

The men, all from Coventry and aged between 18 and 20, admitted using threatening behaviour.

They were prosecuted after police studied CCTV footage of the trouble.

Sean Teeling, 18, of Colvelly Road, Wyken, Michael Freeman, 20, of Harefield Road, Stoke, and Daniel Rampton, 20, of Tomellis Court, Exhall, were ordered to pay a total of £430 in costs.

The trio were also given community service orders by magistrates in Coventry on Wednesday.

Teeling was also given a 12-week prison sentence suspended for a year after admitting an unconnected racist assault in January.

Karlsruhe Defender Slams Own Club's Hooligans - 28/02/2008

Source : Goal.com.uk

Karlsruhe defender Christian Eichner has blasted "criminals" amongst the KSC fanbase who almost took him out with a flare during Saturday's derby at VfB Stuttgart

Karlsruhe lost the game 3-1, but the hot-headed scenes really took place in the stands of the Gottlieb-Daimler-Stadion in what was the first league derby between KSC and VfB for many years.

Smoke billowed up on several occasions as rockets went off and fans set fire to flags of the rival team.

But the closest incident came when 25-year-old full-back Christian Eichner was almost hit by a flare thrown by his own team's fans.

Criminals

"These criminals should have the book thrown at them," blasted Eichner of those who threw the weapons. "It's not right that peaceful people in the stadium should be afraid of getting seriously injured by these highly dangerous things."

All in all, Karlsruhe hooligans chucked more than a dozen rockets and missiles towards the field of play and KSC sporting director Rolf Dohmen was similarly angry with his supporters.

Lethal

"This rocket that missed the player by a hair's breadth was 800 to 1000 degrees hot," he raged. "We've without a doubt reached the point where we have to act."

Karlsruhe have launched a campaign attacking the hooligans, who almost always dress in black, reading: "our fans wear blue-and-white - not black."

The club has added that from now on tickets for away games will no longer be distributed en masse between the fan clubs, rather only to those officially registered with the club.

Football hooligans brought to book - 28/02/2008

Source : Swindon Advertiser

THE exploits of football hooligans associated with Swindon Town has been retold in a new book.

Hooligans 2, which goes on sale today has taken co-authors Nick Lowles and Andy Nicholls two years to research and put together.

It has information on more than 100 clubs, including Scottish and non-League teams from incidents of the last 30 years or more.

"I was a little surprised with the so-called smaller clubs that the intensity and rivalry is so big," said Andy, pictured below, a former hooligan of 30 years.

"With Swindon I noticed that local derbies are fiercely contested, particularly with Oxford.

"These are always likely to be flash point games for any football club.

"I want this book to act as an eye-opener rather than glorify violence.

"I hope it will be used for educational reasons as it could relate to many subjects such as social studies, criminology and psychology.

"It is not just football memoirs, the publication deals with the true reality of hooliganism."

The book deals with specific flashpoints which have occurred over the years involving certain so-called football fans.

A passage from the book relating to a Swindon match reads: "A home game against Wrexham in March 1978 saw the away goalkeeper pelted with darts, stones and a golf ball.

"The referee reported Swindon over the incident which ended with keeper Eddie Niedzwiecki being hit on the head with a lump of concrete.

"Swindon also clashed with Bristol City fans. Missiles were thrown at police at one game, causing the match to be halted."

A home match with Oxford in September 1998 also saw 19 fans arrested and in August 2000, in the first game of the season at Reading, a section of Swindon fans booed through the minute's silence in memory of former Reading player and manager Maurice Evans.

The book said: "The referee had to call time on the tribute early because of the unpleasant reaction of some of the away support and there were clashes after the match."

In years gone by Andy was classified as a Category C thug - the worst kind.

The 45-year-old from Chester amassed more than 20 arrests for football-related offences and has been deported from Belgium, Iceland and Sweden.

He has a lifetime ban from Everton football club for brawling.

Andy is now a changed man with a family and he hopes that people will learn from his mistakes.

Key Arrests And Football Ban Warning For Trouble-causers - 29/02/2008

Source : South Yorkshire Police (press release)

Police have made a crack down on football related violence in Barnsley with a number of key arrests in advance of the Sheffield Wednesday fixture this Saturday.

6 men have been arrested for Violent Disorder following trouble between Barnsley and Sheffield United supporters in Sheffield in December. This is part of a comprehensive post match investigation and more arrests are to follow.

“There is no place to hide for anyone involving themselves in football related violence” warns Superintendent David Hartley. As Match Commander he is determined to head off any potential trouble between rival football supporters.

Police are urging fans attending the Barnsley FC v Sheffield Wednesday FC football fixture, 3 pm, Saturday 1 March 2008 to behave themselves and not to drink to excess.

“Anyone who comes with the intention of looking for trouble will find themselves in Police custody, then to court and then banned. What these arrests prove is that the police investigation does not stop on the day; we will pursue trouble causers relentlessly and provide opportunity to reflect on their actions in a police cell”

Superintendent Hartley further warned: “I want to get a clear message to all supporters our aim is to support a safe and trouble free local derby, but must stress that drinking alcohol to excess and football do not go together” he said. “This applies to supporters of both teams and we will take a strong stance against those trying to gain entry the worse for drink. They will be arrested and prosecuted through the Courts. This is a public safety issue and one that the Club and Police are working together on”.

“We have been planning for this fixture for several weeks and all police leave has been cancelled. The policing operation is intended to ensure public safety before, during and after the fixture. I am aware from intelligence received that groups of individuals are planning disorder at this fixture. I will have 200 officers working the event to avoid the sort of disorder that was experienced in Sheffield following the recent fixture in December.

I intend to use all the resources available to me and the full range of legislation to enable those wanting to attend and watch a game of football to do so free from the threat of violence. I am satisfied the policing operation is robust and will deal with the many demands that will come our way”.

Superintendent Hartley added that video evidence gathering teams supported by officers in the CCTV room will be working hard to gather intelligence and evidence that will be used to deal with hooligans. Mobile CCTV vehicles have been drafted in to enable full coverage in and around the Town Centre.

Superintendent Hartley said, “The Police are working closely with both Clubs to eliminate trouble-causers. Fans are asked to arrive at the Stadium in good time and to ensure that they use the seat allocated to them. There is potential for queuing at the turnstiles and those leaving it to the last 30 minutes to arrive may miss part of the game. This is an all ticket fixture with no tickets being sold on the day”.

He said, “I would ask all Sheffield Wednesday Supporters to remain seated for a matter of five minutes at the end of the fixture to give us chance to clear the area outside the Stadium. This is a public safety request, as this has been a flash point in the past. In addition, the road outside the away supporters area onto Grove Street will be closed after the fixture until such time as the Police Commander feels it safe and appropriate to open the road”.

Anyone with information about planned disorder should contact the police so we can ensure innocent members of the public in the Town Centre are not involved in violent conflict. Together we can make this an event remembered for the right reason, football.

Fan cleared of violence - 29/02/2008

Source : Oxford Mail

A devoted Oxford United fan spoke of his relief last night after winning an appeal against his conviction for football violence.

Liam Walker, 29, was banned from all football matches for three years after being found guilty of taking part in violent clashes wit rival fans before an Oxford United match with York City His conviction for a public order offence was quashed, after an appeal hearing at Oxford Crown Court ruled that his identification at the scene by two police officers was unsafe.

Mr Walker's three-year football banning order was also overturned.

Mr Walker, of Cherwell Avenue, Kidlington, told the Oxford Mail: "Common sense has prevailed. I was convicted because of the people I hang around with. I was convicted by association.

"Football has been a very important part of my life. I have been going since I was a babe in arms in the late 1970s "Now I I've got it back I hope police will allow me to go and enjoy it. I have always maintained my innocence and co-operated fully with the police.

"Thankfully in the fullness of time, I have been allowed the result I wanted. Police have got a difficult job to do, but I can explain in this particular case how they came to believe I was involved."

Asked if he was ever a football hooligan, Walker replied: "I have an exemplary record and that speak for itself."

The court heard that Walker's mugshot was on a football hooligans' spotters list used by police to pick out troublemakers at Oxford United matches.

Joanne Seer, prosecuting said about 100 rival hooligans clashed in Blackbird Leys Road for a pre-arranged fight before the match in September 2006. Mr Walker was said to be a ringleader Mr Walker, a social worker at an Oxford children's home, told the court he watched the trouble from a distance and was not involved in the violence.

Pc Steve Norman, football liaison officer, said he saw Mr Walker with a group of fans from his spotters list during the trouble.

Sophie Murray, defending said there was no mention of Walker causing trouble in Pc Norman's match report and a fellow police officer had less than a minute to identify troublemakers during "hectic" events.

Clearing Walker, the Recorder, Edward Jenkins praised the bravery of police officers, but added the identification of Walker was unsafe.

He said: "The conviction is quashed, but I hope it's clear I compliment the officers for the difficult duty they had to perform."

France: Metz looks to take legal action against group of its fans for making Nazi salutes - 28/02/2008

Source : The Canadian Press

Metz plans to take legal action against a far-right group of its fans who made Nazi salutes at the end of last week's league match against Lyon.

This latest extremist incident in the French league follows displays of racism at a Metz game on Feb. 16 and at a second-division match Friday involving fans of Corsican club Bastia.

The French soccer league, known as LFP, responded by asking players and officials from first-and second-division clubs to wear T-shirts bearing the message: "Racism ... Never again!" before last week's games.

After their 2-0 loss to league leader Lyon on Saturday, Metz players threw their T-shirts into a crowd of about 100 travelling supporters at Stade Gerland.

Metz director of security Jacky Ancel said about 10 of the club's fans responded with Nazi salutes.

"We will try and identify them and take legal action," Ancel said Tuesday.

Ancel said they are likely to belong to an extremist group of fans who call themselves "Identity Youth" ("Jeunesse Identitaire" in French). It is a branch within another far-right group of about 40 Metz fans who call themselves "The Faction" ("La Faction"), said Ancel.

"Within this small group (The Faction), there are a few Nazis associated with the extreme of the extreme right - Identity Youth," Ancel said. They "are people who like to fight."

Ancel said Metz's options are limited because it can only ban the fans from games if they are caught red-handed breaking the law.

"You can ban someone from a nightclub, but we can't ban them (from a stadium). It's scandalous," he said.

French soccer league president Frederic Thiriez has criticized the lack of banning orders.

"Today in France we only have 80 people banned from stadiums," Thiriez said. "In England, there are 3,500. Thus, this law needs to be applied with much more severity."

On Friday, Bastia fans displayed a banner with racist insults before the match against Libourne Saint-Seurin. It was aimed at Libourne's Boubacar Kebe, who is black and from Burkina Faso.

The referee delayed the start by three minutes until the banner was removed. Bastia won 2-1.

Kebe refused to play Friday because he had been racially insulted by some Bastia supporters during a home match on Sept. 14, when he reacted with a gesture that led to him being sent off.

The LFP could dock points from Bastia.

It is also reviewing another racist incident involving Valenciennes captain Abdeslam Ouaddou, who led Morocco at the African Cup of Nations last month.

Ouaddou was racially abused at Metz's Saint-Symphorien stadium and climbed into the stands to seek out the aggressor, who has since apologized but faces prosecution. Ouaddou was calmed down by other Metz fans and he then withdrew.

Ouaddou says he alerted match referee Damien Ledentu several times before taking matters into his own hands, but the match was not stopped and Ouaddou received a yellow card for nonsporting behaviour.

Ledentu denied Ouaddou alerted him to the racist insults, but has not taken charge of a match since.

Ouaddou has filed a complaint with police and the LFP has promised to file a legal complaint against the fan. Metz president Carlo Molinari said his club had also filed suit.
