Italian police arrest three people in Rome for football-related violence - 24/11/2007

Source : International Herald Tribune

Three more people have been arrested for allegedly taking part in the riots following the Nov. 11 shooting death of a soccer fan, Italian police said Saturday.

The arrests brings to seven the number of suspects picked up in Rome, where angry fans attacked a police barracks near the stadium and the Italian Olympic Committee's headquarters.

Another 18 people have been previously arrested in Milan and other cities where riots also erupted after news spread about the death of Gabriele Sandri. Enraged by the shooting, rioters smashed windows and hurled stones at police cars.

Police in Rome said the prosecutors were considering terrorism charges against two of the three suspects arrested Saturday.

Sandri, a 26-year-old disc jockey from Rome and a Lazio fan, died after getting hit in the neck by a bullet while sitting in a car at a highway rest stop in Tuscany. Police said an officer fired shots to disperse a scuffle between two groups of rival fans.

The police officer who fired the shot has been placed under investigation for murder.

PSG: Julien Quemener RIP... 1 year - 23/11/2007

Source: mail (thanks to the sender)

Elsewhere, a high police presence is expected at Nice for the visit of Paris Saint-Germain on Sunday.

This match has seen violent confrontations between the club's hooligan factions in recent years, and Sunday's game comes a year after the shooting death of 24-year-old PSG fan Julien Quemener by a plainclothes police officer on Nov. 23, 2006, outside the Parc des Princes.

The shooting highlighted the problem of racism, violence and hooliganism among PSG fans. Quemener was a member of a group known as the Boulogne Boys, some of whom were known to have links to PSG's violent far-right fan base, a problem that club has been keen to eradicate over the past year.

The police officer who killed Quemener was protecting a Jewish fan under attack from supporters shouting racist and anti-Semitic epithets following a match between PSG and Hapoel Tel Aviv.

Violent incidents involving PSG fans have been largely quashed since, but French media reports earlier this week said that infighting between PSG fans resurfaced at the away game in Strasbourg on Nov. 10.

PSG fans are believed to be planning a march on Friday near the Parc des Princes to honour Quemener.

Steaua Bucharest - Dinamo Bucharest - 24/11/2007

Source : Reuters + GSP.ro

Rioting fans arrested at Steaua-Dinamo derby

At least two dozen Steaua Bucharest supporters were arrested before kickoff in the Romanian derby against Dinamo Bucharest on Saturday.
The match at Ghencea stadium, which ended in a 1-0 victory for Steaua, was interrupted three times in the opening 12 minutes when fans of both sides threw flares at each other and smoke bombs onto the pitch.
Television footage showed police handcuffing rioting fans outside the stadium before the game. The fans were seen smashing windows of police cars and destroying traffic signs.
A riot police officer told Realitatea TV that two policemen had been injured during the clashes.
Inside, the two teams had to suspend their warm-up on the pitch for several minutes after police used teargas to stop fans from destroying plastic seats in the stands.
The longest of the interruptions during the match lasted eight minutes with the teams retreating to the changing rooms to avoid the acrid smoke.
After the match, a police spokesman said 16 fans were fined and criminal files were opened against nine for violent behaviour in a public place.

Hooligans Derby: Football game stopped three times, torches slipped onto the stadium, conflicts with gendarmes

The football game between two of the most important Bucharest teams, Steaua and Dinamo, became on Saturday night the stage of a violent confrontation between groups of hooligans from both galleries. During the first half of the game, Professional Football League officials seriously considered to evacuate the stadium, due to a thick curtain of smoke that covered the field. The smoke came from illegally slipped torches that Police forces seemed to be unaware of.

One hour and a half before the game, over 100 Steaua supporters begun a fight with the gendarmes ensuring the perimeter security, in an attempt to "meet face to face" the Dinamo supporters. Several cars parked in the area were damaged, including a Police car. Gendarmes were forced to use tear gas.

During the warm up of the teams, a torch was thrown on the field, gendarmes replying with another round of tear gas. The air became impossible to breathe for a few minutes.

The game was stopped three times because of the smoking torches thrown on the field. There is information that the torches in the Dinamo section were placed under the seats during the morning. After the game, the Police retained Dinamo supporters for one hour on the stadium. According to Dinamo witnesses, some of them were to a Police station, photographed and had the fingerprints checked.

Gendarmes announced that 434 supporters were confined, 12 criminal files were opened and 70 persons were fined after the incidents on Saturday night.

Police arrest football gang

A GANG of football fanatics have been arrested in Swindon.

Swindon Police arrested more than 12 teenagers who it is thought had been planning to cause trouble at the town's football game against Bristol Rovers today.

Chief Inspector Simon Dicks said: "A number of people in their late teens and early twenties have been arrested and will face a court soon.

"We received information these people were planning on causing a breach of the peace and they now face lifetime football bans.

"The people of Swindon do not want rioting at football matches and they have been very helpful in providing information.

"These people have to remember our gang is bigger than their gang."

It is believed ringleaders from rival teams had organised a fight before the match.

Police shelve soccer Nazi salute case - 21/11/2007

Source: http://www.praguemonitor.com

The Czech police today shelved the investigation of Sparta Praha's footballer Pavel Horvath over his gesture reminding of the Nazi salute during a first league match, state attorney Petr Cibulka told CTK Tuesday.

The police concluded that Horvath did not commit any crime.

Leos Vacek, who filed the complaint against Horvath in September, is a member of the far-right National Party.

The Czech soccer association's disciplinary commission fined Horvath 200,000 crowns for the gesture he made during the match Viktoria Zizkov vs Sparta played on August 25. The commission based its decision on the expert report of Miroslav Mares who specialises on extremism and analysed the televised recording of the gesture.

Horvath apologised for the gesture and he distanced from fascism.

The National Party said on its website it filed the complaint because it disliked the fact that police decided not to prosecute Horvath, while in other cases indicating the promotion of fascism they proceeded far more actively.

Colchester: Drunk football fan placed under curfew - 24/11/2007

Source: http://www.eveningstar.co.uk

A FOOTBALL fan who tried to enter Portman Road drunk has avoided being banned from following his beloved Colchester United because a judge declared they need all the fans they can get.

Colchester United supporter David Smith insisted he could “drink for England” in an attempt to avoid a criminal record but after district judge David Cooper heard the details of his case he was placed under a curfew.

Smith was spotted in a drunken state by two police officers as he tried to enter Portman Road with his son for the Colchester versus Ipswich Town derby last month.

He was arrested and later charged with being drunk in a sports ground, but when he appeared before magistrates in Ipswich on November 2 the 43-year-old denied the charge.

The dad from Straight Road, Boxford, near Hadleigh, told the court on that occasion: “I can drink for England.

“I can finish a case of larger and still be working properly.”

Smith, a self-employed forklift truck driver, initially maintained his story when he appeared again at South East Suffolk Magistrates' Court in front of district judge David Cooper on Wednesday.

He said although he had been to a number of pubs in Ipswich before the match he was not drunk and added: “It's not illegal to drink. I can drink a lot and I wouldn't be drunk in two hours of drinking.”

Judge Cooper advised Smith to change his plea to guilty after hearing prosecution evidence that two officers had seen him with bloodshot eyes, smelling of alcohol and with slurred speech.

Smith was then given the opportunity of watching a video of his behaviour at the time and after viewing the tape he came back into court and changed his plea to guilty.

He admitted: “I do look as though I am worse for wear.”

Judge Cooper then gave him a community order, including a two-month curfew confining him to his home between 10.30pm and 6.30am for two months excluding Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Year's Eve and New Year's Day.

He added: “I won't have to ban you from following Colchester United - they need all the fans they can get.”

England: Football hooligans banned - 23/11/2007

Source: http://www.newsandstar.co.uk

TWO hooligans have been handed football banning orders after inciting violence on the day of Carlisle United’s home clash against Leeds.

Carlisle men Brian Elliott, 45, and Sean Pattinson, 21, will not be able to attend matches anywhere in Britain for three years after admitting goading rival supporters.

The two were among 21 people arrested as trouble flared before and after the sellout match against the Yorkshire giants at Brunton Park on November 3. United won 3-1.

Elliott, of Raffles Avenue, attempted to provoke travelling Leeds supporters into a fight as police escorted them from the train station to United’s ground.

Elliott admitted using words or behaviour causing alarm or distress when he appeared before Carlisle Magistrates’ Court.

William Mark-Bell, mitigating, said the Leeds fans were hostile towards Elliott. . Elliott, who claimed he is not a football fan, was also fined £100 and ordered to pay £43 costs.

Pattinson, of Highbank Close, Harraby, also admitted using words or behaviour causing alarm or distress after the game.

He was part of a group of between 20 and 30 Carlisle men facing a similar group of Leeds fans in English Street.

A police dog handler saw Pattinson wave his arms and shout: “Come on then!” and had to separate the two gangs with his dog.

Pattinson, defending himself, said: “I am not a football fan. I didn’t go to the match, I just went into town to buy a birthday card. I must have had more to drink than I realised.”

He was fined £200 and ordered to pay £43 costs.

Another man, Gary Sullivan, 22, of Linton Street, near London Road, was given a conditional discharge after he ran onto the pitch in excitement after the final whistle blew.

Gerard Rogerson, prosecuting, said on a day filled with such disorder his actions could have wound up rival fans and incited a riot.

Magistrates said they were satisfied Sullivan was just showing his enthusiasm for Carlisle’s victory, but he would certainly get a banning order if he did it again.

Sullivan, who climbed over the advertising board onto the pitch as the players were leaving, said: “It was such a big match and I got a bit excited, I was just buzzing my head off that they won.

“I didn’t think it was illegal. I was sitting in the cells after thinking, ‘Oh, what did I do that for?’”

Speaking after the court appearance, Chief Superintendent Andy Davidson, welcomed the bans.

He said: “I am pleased to see the courts have supported our actions.

“We will not tolerate anti-social behaviour and violence in any form.”

60 Northern Ireland fans removed from flight - 19/11/2007

Source: http://www.ireland.com

More than 60 Northern Ireland fans were thrown off a flight from Madrid to Gran Canaria early this morning after allegedly disturbing other passengers, Iberia Airlines has said.

The pilot ordered them off but all bar four apologised and caught later flights, the spokeswoman confirmed.

The supporters were on their way to Wednesday's make-or-break Euro 2008 qualifier against Spain.

Amalgamation of Northern Ireland Supporters' Clubs press officer Gary McAllister said: "I am aware that there's been an incident of some description, the full details of which I am not aware.

"We will be having a meeting with the IFA after the match is over to discuss this. The vast majority of games are attended without incident."

A spokeswoman for Iberia verified the details but said she had nothing to add at this stage.

One supporter told the BBC those thrown off were not at all rowdy. "I would dispute that allegation totally.

The flight was at 11.55pm. Everybody just wanted to get their head down and get to sleep. There was nothing whatsoever, there was no shouting, there was no singing."

He said most of the passengers were supporters and denied any altercation.

Holon punished with empty stands for fans' behavior - 23/11/2007

Source: http://www.jpost.com

An Israel Basketball Association tribunal sentenced Hapoel Holon to play eight home games in front of empty stands on Thursday for its fans' involvement in the firecracker incident that saw Malha security guard Yoav Glitzenstein lose two fingers last Sunday.

Holon will play Maccabi Tel Aviv, Hapoel Afula/Gilboa, Ironi Nahariya and its State Cup quarterfinal in an empty arena.

The second half of the punishment, however, could be annulled should the club come up with a detailed educational plan for its supporters by next March to prevent a similar incident from reoccurring.

The tribunal also decided that Holon will suffer a technical loss to Hapoel Jerusalem in the game that was abandoned because of the firecracker explosion.

"The club is responsible for its fans' behavior even at away games," the verdict read. "Holon's claim that the hosting club should be responsible for the visiting fans is absurd and unacceptable."
Holon owner and coach Miki Dorsman was enraged with the tribunal's decision.

"We have no control over how people behave and we can't be responsible for coming up with a plan to prevent this from happening again," he told Army Radio on Thursday. "The game was played in Jerusalem and they should also be held accountable."

Dorsman, who after meeting with the tribunal on Tuesday said that he would retire from coaching regardless of the punishment, was far less definite of his future plans on Thursday.

"I asked my players yesterday for a week off," he said. "They don't want me to leave. I have to meet with my legal advisor and decide whether I'm interested in staying."

In the meantime, Dorsman announced that assistant coach Ofer Heruti will guide the team in its next league game against Bnei Hasharon on Monday.

The IBA's legal advisor, Shuki Kramer, was pleased with Thursday's sentencing.

"This is the first time a tribunal has decided to give a club an educational punishment," he said. "This is a very important message to all the clubs and fans. I'm pleased with the decision and I hope Holon's plan proves effective in eradicating violence from the arenas."

Glitzenstein, who is still recovering, spoke extensively for the first time on Thursday.

"This incident broke up my family," he said. "My seven-year-old daughter can't fall asleep. What am I supposed to say when she asks me will my hand be OK," Glitzstein told Army Radio.

"I saw Holon took an offensive rebound so I ran across the court to pick up the object. Three steps later there was a massive explosion and I fell to my knees. I looked up at my hand and saw it was mangled.

"My 13-year-old daughter and 16-year-old son were in the arena and the first thing I thought about was that they don't need to be seeing this. I didn't feel any pain; I was just thinking of my children."

An indictment has been filed against Yossi Malach, who allegedly threw the firecracker. He will remain under arrest at least until November 28.
"He needs to know that he ruined our entire family life and he must pay a price and sit in prison," Glitzenstein said. "Holon is known for its wild fans and this isn't the first time these kinds of things have happened.

"I told Miki [Dorsman] that he should invest his money somewhere else. I would like to have heard what he would have said had his hand been blown off. I'm sure he wouldn't have stayed in basketball.

"I hope to return to Malha soon. Malha is a place of love and beauty and it's my home. I love the Hapoel Jerusalem family and no one will take that away from me."

Eight Brazilian football fans die as stadium bleacher gives way - 26/11/2007

Source : Brandon Sun

A section of stands at a football stadium in northeastern Brazil gave way Sunday as fans cheered at the end of a game, killing eight people, police said.

At least 60,000 were in the stadium for the game at the Fonte Nova stadium in the coastal city Salvador when the victims fell several storeys to the ground after a hole several metres wide opened in the concrete floor of a section of the highest bleachers.

At least nine people fell through and eight of them died, said Maj. Edmilson Tavares of the city's federal police. He said he could not immediately confirm how many people were hurt.

The accident happened as fans of the Bahia club went into a wild celebration, storming the field when their team managed a 0-0 tie with Vila Nova which secured Bahia a place in the country's second division.

Globo TV reported fans had been jumping up and down in glee and dozens of people were injured.

Many fans did not realize the bleachers had given way and continued to celebrate by swarming the field after the game.

The stadium was built in 1951, said the website of Salvador's A Tarde newspapers.

A survey of football stadiums released last month by Brazil's Sinaeco association of architects and engineers said the Fonte Nova's stands were "in ruins," A Tarde reported.

The newspaper said Fonte Nova was evaulated as part of a study of Brazilian soccer venues because Brazil will host the 2014 World Cup. Salvador would almost certainly host some of the games.

Brazil, which has won a record five World Cups, was awarded the right last month to host 2014 tournament Tuesday by FIFA's executive committee. Latin America's largest country hosted the competition once before, losing to Uruguay in the 1950 final.

The state governor of Bahia state, Jacques Wagner, ordered the Fonte Nova stadium closed while authorities investigate the cause of the accident.

OGC Nice - PSG - 25/11/2007

Source : The Canadian Press

Matches between PSG and Nice have led to violent confrontations between the club's hooligan factions in recent years, and Sunday's game was nearly a year to the day of the shooting death of 24-year-old PSG fan Julien Quemener by a plainclothes police officer outside Parc des Princes.

A heavy police presence was in place to curtail potential trouble, and the website of French sports daily L'Equipe reported that 15 PSG hooligans were stopped by police in Nice city centre before the match - some armed with clubs and planks of wood.

The day before the game, a very very good and violente fight erupted in Antibes, between 45 PSG lads and around 100 Nice lads. 5 minutes of extreme violence. A lot of lads were seriously injured.

Juventus fans barred from San Siro - 27/11/2007

Source : Agence France-Presse

JUVENTUS fans will be barred from attending the Italian Serie A fixture between the club and European champions AC Milan in the San Siro this weekend.

Security in Milan will be particularly stringent to prevent Juve fans from gaining access to the stadium as talian football officials continue to take action against football-related hooliganism in the country.

Other than season ticket holders, only people who can prove they live in the Milan area will be allowed to buy tickets for the match.

Away fans were barred from six matches last weekend.

Italy has been in turmoil since the death of a Lazio fan just over two weeks ago, shot accidentally by a police officer after violence broke out between Lazio and Juventus fans at a service station.

Regional Football Battles against Neo-Nazi Influence - 26/11/2007

Source : Spiegel

Hardly a weekend goes by in Germany without some sort of racist incident on the football pitch or in the stands. A new program in Germany aims to combat neo-Nazi influence among soccer fans.

Sometimes, words simply aren't enough. Last month, the multicultural Berlin football club Türkiyemspor was in Rathenow, west of the capital for a regional league match. The atmosphere was tense, and became even worse once the opening whistle blew. Almost immediately, one of the Turkish players got in the face of a fan who had insulted him. "It almost turned ugly," says Mehmet Matur. "I jumped in between them and was able to calm the situation down."

Matur, 47, isn't a player. Rather, he is the so-called integration officer for the Berlin Football Association. His primary duty is to lead the fight against racism on Berlin football pitches. Normally, he relies on his voice, but sometimes, like last month, there is no choice but to get physical. "That is the last resort," he says.

The problem of racism on German soccer fields is one that has gotten worse and worse in recent years. There have been numerous cases of fans chanting ape noises at black players. Mass punch ups involving right-wing extremists after second and third league games have become more common. There was even a case last summer of fans firing off a torrent of anti-Semitic abuse at two teams of 14-year-olds.

Attacks of Foreigners

Politicians and football officials have been discussing the problem for months, and already, a number of initiatives have been taken. The German Football Association (DFB) has appointed full-time security and fan representatives and has set up a large working group concerned with preventing violence. There is a new registration system for racist incidents, a country-wide fan group to look into incidents, and an initiative against homophobia.

Now, though, German football is beginning an effort to combat racism and violence in regional leagues as well. Racist insults and violent attacks on foreigners have become all-too-common on pitches across the country. A training program in the eastern German town of Halle over the weekend was the first step toward solving the problem.

"We have to do something to combat this problem," says Matur. "This training program is extremely important."

Referees, coaches, club officials and fans attended five forums addressing problems from identifying right-extremist symbols to dealing with racist and homophobic insults on the pitch and in the stands. Called "Making Clubs Strong," the seminar was organized by the fan initiative KOS and the League for Democracy and Tolerance.

"A lot of clubs have become sensitized to the problems, but they nonetheless feel overwhelmed," says Gerd Wagner from the project "Stay on the Ball," (am Ball bleiben), a group aimed at combating racism in football.

Bastions of Neo-Nazi Sentiment

Helmut Spahn, in charge of security for DFB, likewise had high hopes for the weekend event. "This is a very important step towards making the topic more public and transparent," he said.

The problem is one that has long plagued soccer in Germany. Though not as visible in German stadiums as it is in Italy and Spain, where racist chants have become almost a weekly event, the problem has merely been displaced. Now, many of the incidents take place in train stations or on the streets prior to and after the matches. Many fan clubs, particularly in eastern Germany, have become bastions of neo-Nazi sentiment.

The development is not an accidental one. Combating creeping right-wing extremism takes time and money, resources that have not always been available -- and neo-Nazis have been quick to exploit the gap. As early as the 1980s, neo-Nazi leader Michael Kühnen built up a system to infiltrate the football fan scene.

It's a strategy still used by the neo-Nazi party NPD and other right-wing groups today. It is often easier to find socially disaffected youth in the football scene -- exactly those who tend to be drawn to the right -- than elsewhere. Indeed, many neo-Nazi groups actually sponsor local and regional football teams, primarily in Germany's east. In Hildburghausen in the state of Thuringia, and in Rathenow in Brandenburg, NPD-members have founded recreation clubs. In Lübeck, the regional football team VfB enjoys the support of an NPD-friendly fan club.

Is '88' Taboo?

How soccer clubs can resist such infiltration was an important topic this weekend in Halle. Though the neo-Nazis appear less menacing without Third Reich flags and combat boots, they often work with codes and symbols. The number 18, for example, stands for "Adolf Hitler," and 88 for "Heil Hitler," based on the position of the letters in the alphabet. Neo-Nazis are also geared up with the token marks of the alternative left: black hoodies and peaked caps, for example, are worn by extreme right-wingers. A picture of Che Guevara qualifies as a symbol for the national fight for liberation. A seminar entitled "Is the Jersey Number 88 Taboo?" aimed at helping coaches and referees identify such symbols.

Even security guards at many of the matches aren't clean. Clubs often have to hire private security services. One police officer who asked not to be named noted, "guards in the east are often recruited from the red-light and bouncer scenes. They provoke more often than they protect." The Berlin club BFC Dynamo, for example, hired security personnel from a notorious boxing gym.

"We have to develop effective structures to regulate the problem," says Spahn. "People have to learn to recognize the danger signals and to deal with them themselves." After all, there are tens of thousands of games played each weekend. Outside observers can't be sent to all of them.

Furious england fans go on the - 28/11/2007

Source : Stockport Express

A MAN had his ear bitten off after boozed-up football fans, enraged by England’s Euro 2008 failure, wreaked havoc at an Edgeley pub.

Up to 20 supporters began brawling and smashing up the Church Inn, on Moseley Street, in the early hours of Thursday morning in the wake of England’s 3-2 defeat by Croatia.

Witnesses said the scene was ‘like a battlefield’.

The pub was so badly damaged it was boarded up the next day - and now local councillors want it to remain closed.

During the fracas, which saw tables overturned and windows shattered, a 36-year-old man had his ear bitten off.

Ward councillor Sheila Bailey said: "There were a lot of people in watching the match. I got a phone call saying all hell had broken loose, it was a riot and had spilled out onto the street.

"I presume when England lost, if people were tanked up it didn’t take much to set them off with a fight.

"There have been problems there before and it’s in the middle of residential property. The ward councillors want to see the place closed, people should be able to live in peace and quiet."

Police were called to the pub following reports of a large disturbance. Most people involved had fled.

One resident, who wished to remain anonymous, said: "It woke me up. I heard women screaming, then shouting and glass smashing. It is not the first time it has happened, it’s like a battlefield."

A 36-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of violent disorder and has been bailed pending further inquiries until December 5.

The ear-biting incident is being treated as assault occasioning grievous bodily harm. As the Stockport Express went to press one person had been arrested.

Det Insp Terry Sweeney said: "Incidents like this make it less likely people will go out to enjoy a drink in a pub and we want to stamp these incidents out.

"We have better things to come to than mass brawls because people can’t take drink and defeat."

A spokesman for Frederic Robinson Ltd, which owns the Church Inn, said it is intended to reopen the pub at the earliest opportunity.

He added: "The site has recently been operated by an experienced temporary management couple employed by Robinson’s, who also look after another of our pubs where they are working full-time during this closure.

"We do not anticipate any undue delay in being able to return to normal business at the Church Inn and we have received no representations to suggest otherwise.

"As a result we are now actively looking for a suitable tenant with the right business sense and ambition who will be committed to operating a well run community pub for Edgeley."

Football fans arrested after attack - 26/11/2007

Source: http://www.thisiswiltshire.co.uk

Two teenagers from Chippenham were arrested on Saturday night after a man was attacked at the town's railway station in what police believe is a football related incident.

Earlier riot police were called to the town after rowdy Bristol Rovers fans stopped off in the town on their way back from a football match against Swindon Town.

Onlookers were shocked to see a group of police officers in full riot gear - including helmets and shields.

advertisementChippenham police received a call from the British Transport Police informing them that a group of football fans had boarded a train bound for Chippenham instead of getting on the train direct to Bristol.

A special police unit was sent from Swindon in a bid to prevent any problems in the town.

Inspector Gavin Williams said: "A full police support unit came down from Swindon, dressed in riot gear, but I'm glad to say there were no problems."

Later on that evening a man was assaulted in what is believed to be a football-related incident. A 17-year-old boy and a 19-year-old man, both from the Chippenham area, were arrested on suspicion of assault.

The victim was knocked unconscious and taken to hospital where his condition is believed to be stable.

Sparta Praha - Spartak Moscow - 29/11/2007

Source : CTK

Russian football fans provoke brawls in Prague

Hardcore fans of the Russian soccer club Spartak Moscow were raging at Prague's Sparta stadium during this night's UEFA Cup match between Spartak and Sparta Praha that ended in 0-0 draw, but they fortunately did not start a fight with Czech fans.

At the beginning of the match, the police detained three fans from the guest section on suspicion of breach of the peace and promotion of symbols of movements suppressing human rights and freedoms.

The Russian rowdies who tried to rush into the lawn clashed with armoured policemen who succeeded in getting them under control.

According to the police commander, ten Russians were detained during the match - eight directly at the stadium and two outside, Sparta spokesman Jakub Otava said.

Six Russian fans and ten security guards were injured in the incident.

An UEFA delegate said the police interference against the soccer fans was adequate and substantiated.

Before the match, drunken Spartak fans made a pilot flying to Prague land in Pardubice, about 100 kilometres east of the capital.

According to the media, some 400 hardcore Russian soccer fans were heading for Prague and the Czech police planned strict security measures.

The match was attended by up to 3,000 Spartak fans.

Thirty minutes after its start, one of the fans raided into the playground with a signal rocket in his hand, but he was pacified by the guards.

The major unrest erupted before the break when more fans tried to get into the lawn and security guards prevented it. This gave a signal to a brawl in which a number of Russian fans got involved. They were throwing signal rockets and smoke bombs.

Armoured police then pushed the aggressive fans into the corner of the auditorium, but smaller brawls continued also outside the tribunes.

Prague police spokesman Tomas Hulan told CTK previously that the number of policemen monitoring the match would be higher than usual and some roads might be closed in the vicinity of the stadium since police experts had assessed the match as highly risky.

"We are cooperating with our colleagues from Russia who have concrete information about certain fans," Hulan said, adding that Russian colleagues helped them identify risk persons.

The police kept monitoring larger group of fans in the streets of Prague in the night to prevent further incidents.

Russian-Polish hooligan front wreaks havoc in Prague

Last night's UEFA Cup football match between Sparta Prague and Spartak Moscow had been labeled as a high risk event by the Prague police. And judged by what happened before, during and after the match, their worries were justified.

During the first half of the match, taking place at Sparta's stadium in Prague's Letná area, supporters of the Russian team, known for their rowdy behaviour, clashed with ushers and policemen, forcing the special police unit to partially clear their sector.

Not in the least discouraged, the evicted Russian fans were then reportedly trying to incite trouble on their way out. One Spartak supporter even managed to distrupt the match by entering the pitch with a flare in his hand.

United we riot

According to the Czech Television reporters, the Prague police made ten arrests, eight at the stadium itself and two in the streets. Some arrested can allegedly expect charges related to their possessing Nazi symbols or propagating extremist ideologies.

Spartak supporters were accompanied by hooligans associated with the Polish football club Lech Poznań.

What could at first seem like a rare display of unity between the two nations, burdened with a long history of mutual conflict, is in fact a strong phenomenon in these circles - the two groups are known to have friendly relationship.

According to the police, the Polish hooligans were in fact among the most violent ones.

Special precautions

The whole day was marked with extraordinary security measures. Hours before the match, the stadium's surroundings were guarded by hundreds of policemen with a helicopter flying above.

The trouble started immediately after the plane carrying Russian fans from Moscow landed in Pardubice, a city situated one hundred kilometers eastward from the capital. Police came to the airport after the pilot had sent a message that some of the passengers were drunk and aggressive.

Some of the border checkpoints were also monitored by the police, and most Czech airports toughened controls.

Being non-EU citizens, Russians are by law subjected to more profound controls. In case of irregularities, the authorities can deny them the entry to the country.
