Peruvian soccer fan dies in pre-match clash - 07/11/2007

Source : Xinhua.com

One person died and several more were injured on Wednesday when soccer fans clashed in Chimbote, a city in the Peru department of Ancash, police told media.

An Allianza Lima fan died after being hit by a car as he fled ahail of stones thrown by fans of Unversitario de Deportes, hours before a derby match between the two.

The fight broke out on the Pan-American Highway, some 414 km northeast of Peru's capital Lima, beginning when 200 UdD fans blocked the highway with large stones in a bid to halt Allianza fans who were on an inter-city bus.

Witnesses told domestic radio that there were around one thousand UdD fans and 200 Allianza fans in the clash.

The two teams are set to play on Wednesday after noon at Chimbote's 25,000-seater Segundo Arellano Stadium.

The National Police and the nation's Civil Defense Agency had previously barred the game from Lima's Monumental Stadium.

hi there, yesterday great fight with CSKA hools !!!
We've been waiting for them since 5pm wery well armed at our bar untill about 7.30pm. Unfortunately for us and fortunately for them they came at 8.15 when we didn't expect them to come anymore, many of our best hools were already inside the stadium and most of the weapons had been drop back in our cars but this is not an excuse because they were really tough.
They were about 100 and started shouting:"Moskow Hooligans, Moskow Hooligans" then they attacked us throwing bottles and weaving belts on their hands on the side of the bar and we were really unprepared at that time but we tried to face them anyway, in the beginning they were definetely better than us and they pushed us back towards the entrance of the bar and after it on the square.
When we was on the square they spread around and we could re-organize us and we charged them. Most of them runned on the parking were you was coming from when you came in Milano last year but they kept fighting us. Nor we nor them kept any line like you're use to do in the fights so many little fights started all around the area some hools from CSKA were knifed in their legs but they runned away without asking help from the ambulance apart a couple we saw.
After these last fights all the hools runned away and we started fighting our police. Two hools from CSKA were arrested and hit by our local police with other six of our Ultras.
I can't say we really won because in the beginning they were really good and we could just do our best to avoid their strengt.
After the game we were about 300 tried to wait for them at the metro station but the police came to send us away and we could do nothing.

Greek pilots refuse to transport Russian soccer fans - 10/11/2007

Source: RIA Novosti

Russian soccer fans have spent more than 24 hours at an airport in central Greece after pilots refused to transport them, an airport spokesperson said Saturday.

A group of 146 people, who came to support Zenit St. Petersburg, which beat Greece's Larissa 3-2 in the 2007/08 UEFA Cup group stage Thursday, could not return to St. Petersburg from the city of Volos as the plane commander refused to take off saying some of them were drunk and bothered the crew.

"They have been provided food. Talks are underway on how they will leave for Russia, and a decision is yet to be found," the airport representative said.

Italian soccer fan is killed in clash at highway stop - 11/11/2007

Source : The Associated Press

A Lazio soccer fan was killed Sunday during a clash with Juventus team supporters at a highway rest stop, and authorities are reportedly investigating whether the victim might have been killed by a stray police warning shot.

TV reports said the victim was a 26-year-old disc jockey from Rome who was a Lazio fan. He had reportedly been headed to Lazio's match in Milan against Inter Milan before becoming involved in a clash with Juventus supporters.

The Italian soccer federation announced that the Inter-Lazio game was postponed to a date to be determined. Sunday's other games were to start 10 minutes late, with players and referees wearing black armbands.

The Italian news agency ANSA said a police officer apparently used a pistol to fire a warning shot in the air to break up the clash beside the A1 highway near Arezzo in Tuscany. TV news reports said investigations were under way over whether the shot might have killed the fan.

Sky TG24 TV quoted witnesses as saying the Juventus fans were traveling in two vans from Naples on their way to Parma for the Parma-Juventus match.

A rest stop employee was quoted as saying he was getting out of his car in the parking lot when he saw a policeman and heard a shot, but couldn't see what happened.

Clashes between rival fans at rest stops are common in Italy.

Premier Romano Prodi was attending Mass when he was informed by Italy's interior minister about the death. He later described the fan violence as "very worrisome."

The death prompted clashes between ultra fans and police in Bergamo, where AC Milan was due to play Atalanta.

Last season, a policeman was killed in riots following a game between Palermo and Catania in Sicily. Under new anti-violence measures this season, some fans have been barred from traveling to games.

In 2004, the derby between AS Roma and Lazio was suspended three minutes into the second half when a false rumor spread through the stadium that police had killed a boy outside the stadium. Riots ensued.

Football fan's death sparks renewed violence in Italy - 11/11/2007

Source: AFP

The spectre of football violence resurged in Italy on Sunday as the shooting dead of a fan sparked nationwide disturbances which forced the suspension of several Serie A matches.

The victim, named as 26 year-old Gabriele Sandri, was killed by a police officer at a motorway service station in Arezzo in what was a "tragic error," authorities in the central Tuscany region said.

The death comes just nine months after a police officer was killed outside the Catania Stadium in Sicily, leading the government to reinforce measures against violence in stadia.

The Catania tragedy in February led to a suspension of Italian football, with numerous stadia forced to make improvements to ensure improved security.

A new body The National Observer for Sporting Events was created by the Italian government to help stamp out violence.

But the progress which the body claimed to have made with a reported 70 per cent decline in hooliganism, was hit on Sunday by the shooting dead of Sandri by a police officer who had intervened following a fight between supporters of rival football teams Juventus and Lazio.

According to witness reports, Sandri was travelling to Milan by car with other fans to attend the match against Inter Milan when they clashed with Juventus fans at a service station.

A police officier who was in the area intervened and Sandri, who was sitting in his car, was fatally hit in the neck by gunfire.

"Our officer intervened to ensure that skirmishes between two groups of people, who had not been identified as (football) fans, did not degenerate with serious consequences for both parties," local prefect Vincenzo Giacobbe said.

The Italian Football Federation later announced that the match between Lazio and Inter Milan had been postponed.

As a mark of respect seven other Serie A matches scheduled Sunday started ten minutes late with the players and referees wearing black armbands. But the atmosphere was tense and clashes broke out before several games.

In Bergamo, Atalanta fans, clashed with police before their home game against AC Milan, forcing the referee to halt play seven minutes after kickoff.

The Atalanta 'ultras' charged on the protection glass separating fans from the pitch, breaking it in two places.

Several players from the Bergamo club tried to reason with the fans but to no avail. After several minutes referee Massimiliano Saccani sent both teams back into the locker room. The game was later suspended.

In Milan, some 400 fans threw stones at police headquarters, while outside the stadium Lazio and Inter supporters chanted anti-police slogans.

In Siena, before the tie against Livorno, supporters shouted "murderers" at police and security officers, a scene reproduced in other stadia.

Italy police say accidentally killed soccer fan - 11/11/2007

Source: Reuters

A policeman shot dead a soccer fan in Italy on Sunday during clashes between supporters of rival clubs, triggering stadium violence and protests outside some police stations.

The shooting, which police said was accidental, took place after Lazio and Juventus supporters clashed at a motorway restaurant near the Tuscan city of Arezzo.

"It was a tragic error," the police chief in Arezzo, Vincenzo Giacobbe, said in a statement. "Our agent intervened to prevent the scuffles between two small groups of people (...) from degenerating," he said.

"I express my deep grief and sincere condolences to the family of the victim."

A senior police source in Rome said the victim, 25-year-old Gabriele Sandri, was killed inside a car of Lazio fans when a policeman from a patrol stationed nearby opened fire to stop the clashes.

"The policeman said he shot in the air. It will be up to the investigators to establish that," the source told Reuters.

"They killed my brother," Cristiano Sandri shouted at reporters at the police station in Arezzo.

As news of the death spread among fans gathering at stadiums, Italy's football league postponed Lazio's match with champions Inter Milan, which had been due to kick off at 2:00 p.m.. The rest of the top Serie A league matches were rescheduled to start 10 minutes late.

In the northern city of Bergamo, Atalanta's match with AC Milan was abandoned after supporters tried to smash down a glass barrier keeping them from the pitch.

Two policemen had earlier been slightly injured in scuffles with fans.

In Milan, hundreds of Lazio fans threw rocks at a police station in protest at the shooting. In Arezzo, a small group of supporters shouted "Assassins!" at security forces.

Italy is battling a serious soccer hooligan problem and suspended all soccer for a period in February when a policeman was killed in riots outside a top-flight match in Catania.

Sporadic violence has continued in recent months despite the security crackdown prompted by February's incident.

Officials said last month that fan injuries caused by violence around stadiums had been cut by 80 percent from last season but that it was difficult to combat violence away from the grounds.

The Serie A match between Atalanta and AC Milan was abandoned after seven minutes of play on Sunday because of crowd disturbances. The players left the field when the problems started and despite appeals for calm, the trouble persisted.

The decision was then taken to call off the match in Bergamo.

Earlier, in the day the scheduled match between Inter and Lazio in Milan was postponed because of the death of a Lazio supporter at a motorway service station in Arezzo.

Gabriele Sandri, 26, is believed to have been struck by a police bullet during scenes of disorder.

Atalanta match abandoned after fan trouble

Atalanta's Serie A match with AC Milan was abandoned on Sunday after fans tried to smash down a glass barrier keeping them from the pitch.

Discussions between the teams, the referee and the police led to the decision, which was conveyed to fans via the public address system.

Violence had erupted outside the ground in Bergamo before kickoff following news that a Lazio fan had been accidently killed by a policeman at a service station.

A small group of fans continued to misbehave inside the ground and started to smash the fence with fists and implements after the game began.

Atalanta players went over to the fans behind the goal in a bid to calm them down and shortly afterwards the referee led all the players off the pitch with less than 10 minutes played.

Two holes were created in the barrier next to the goal by fans who covered their faces with scarves.

Order was quickly restored and fans waited around for 40 minutes before the decision to call off the match was announced.

The game had gone ahead, 10 minutes late, despite scuffles between fans and police outside the stadium. Two policemen were slightly injured, local police said.

Inter Milan's match against Lazio, scheduled for Sunday, had already been postponed following the death of the Lazio fan.

Italy Stunned After Fan's Death - 11/11/2007

Source: sportinglife.com

Italy is in shock over another football tragedy in which a Lazio fan was shot and killed on Sunday at a motorway service station in Arezzo.

Just 10 months after a police officer was killed in violent scenes outside the Catania Stadium in Sicily, a Biancoceleste supporter has lost his life.

Arezzo head of police Vincenzo Giacobbe confirmed that a man had died and did not deny media reports that the fatal bullet had come from a police weapon.

"This is a tragic mistake," he said. "Our agent had intervened to prevent the fracas between two groups of people - that had not been considered fans - degenerating into a situation with serious consequences for both groups.

"I express my most profound pain and sincere condolences to the victim's family."

It is uncertain whether the Lazio fan was travelling to the game at the San Siro in Milan but the Italian Football Federation have postponed the game.

"The FIGC entirely assumes responsibility for the decision to postpone the game between Internazionale and Lazio," said FIGC president Giancarlo Abete.

"I would be intellectually dishonest if I said that we had not considered postponing all of today's games.

"But in the end, we believe that we have taken the right decision.

"The incident has yet to be clarified and it should not create any animosity between the fans and the police because what has happened is not yet clear."

Italian prime minister Romano Prodi expressed his shock over Sunday's events. Prodi was in church when a government aid informed him that a Biancoceleste supporter had died.

Prodi said: "These are episodes that increase concern.

"I was made aware of the situation by the minister of interior while I was in mass."

The Catania tragedy back in February led to a suspension of Italian football, with numerous stadia forced to make improvements to ensure better security.

The Italian government also created an independent body, L'Osservatorio nazionale sulle manifestazione sportive, to clamp down on football violence.

Since its creation, the body has rated some games as 'high risk' and prevented fans from travelling to support their clubs in those encounters, including Saturday's Palermo v Napoli game in Sicily.

A Lazio spokesman, Giacomo Mazzocchi, said of the incident: "It's shocking and inexplicable. We are still asking ourselves how could something like this have happened. It's a tragedy."

Hooligans attack policemen outside Rome stadium

Hooligans have assaulted city policemen outside the Stadio Olimpico in Rome where the Serie A late game Roma-Cagliari was cancelled following the death of a fan, ANSA reported Sunday. A Lazio supporter was accidentally killed Sunday morning in clashes among fans when a policeman fired his pistol to calm down a riot at a rest station on the highway between Rome and Florence.

The fan was heading for the game his club was to play at Inter Milan.

Police intervened and dispersed the group of fans who were wearing helmets and holding crowbars. They reportedly damaged some motorcycles and one car as they left the area outside the Olimpico.

It was not clear whether the hooligans were supporters of Roma or Lazio.

Earlier Sunday, the Inter-Lazio game was postponed to a yet unset date, while Atalanta and visiting AC Milan had their tie called off after eight minutes when home hooligans threatened to invade the pitch.

Angry soccer fans attack police barracks in Rome - 11/11/2007

Source : Reuters

About 200 soccer fans attacked a police barracks in Rome on Sunday after the killing of a fan by a policeman sparked violence at stadiums and protests in at least four cities, police said.
A police officer said some of the attackers, wielding rocks and clubs, set cars on fire outside the barracks and smashed the building's windows.
Outside the city's stadium, fans threw firecrackers and overturned garbage bins, clashing with police.

Enraged by the killing, a mob of fans in Rome attacked a police barracks across the Tiber from the Stadio Olimpico tonight, police said.

Armed with rocks and clubs, and with their faces covered, the fans entered the station and also smashed windows, burned cars and wrecked motorcycles and scooters parked in the area, two Italian news agencies said.

Sky TG24 showed images of flames from what it said was a bus set afire near the barracks. APcom said passengers of a bus that was blocked by the rioting were evacuated and given shelter in the lobby of a building near the barracks.

Rome’s police headquarters said the barracks were under attack but declined to give details saying it was still receiving reports from the field.

Bosnia Muslim, Croat soccer fans clash

Eight people, including seven policemen, were injured and cars were smashed when fans of rival soccer teams clashed in Bosnia's ethnically divided southern town of Mostar, the police said on Sunday.
The injuries occurred on Saturday in the western Croat part of the town, the night before a match between Croat club Zrinjski and Moslem club Velez, police spokesman Srecko Bosnjak said.
"One man sustained serious injuries to the head and seven policemen were injured while trying to separate the crowd who hurled rocks at each other and smashed two police vehicles," he said.
He declined to say what sparked the incident.
Twelve people were detained for questioning and an investigation was under way, Bosnjak said.
Trouble continued on Sunday when Zrinjski fans pelted a bus taking Velez fans with stones and bottles. Riot police used tear gas to disperse the crowd, Bosnjak said.
Outbreak of ethnic violence occur regularly in Mostar. The latest incidents were condemned by international and local officials.
The region remains volatile after the break-up of the former Yugoslav federation in the 1990s. Ethnic and racist incidents have also been reported in neighbouring Serbia and Croatia.

Chaos and disorder rules day after fan is shot dead - 11/11/2007

Source : Independent

The Italian league was thrown into chaos yesterday following the fatal shooting of a Lazio fan, Gabriele Sandri, who was 26 years old.

Sandri, a disc jockey, was shot at a motorway service station near Arezzo as police attempted to intervene to quell trouble and a police spokesman all but confirmed media reports that the fatal bullet came from a police weapon.

As news broke of the shooting, the reverberations were felt elsewhere even though the Italian football authorities, as well as calling off Lazio's game with Internazionale in Milan, at first ordered that the remaining matches kick off 10 minutes later as a mark of respect to Sandri.

Fighting marred the build-up to the Atalanta-Milan game and then the referee, Massimiliano Saccani, took the teams back to the changing rooms after seven minutes of play when Atalanta fans attempted to invade the pitch. The official decided after a 25-minute wait to call off the game.

The Milan defender Alessandro Nesta, a member of Italy's World Cup-winning squad, said: "We all came out ready to play. Unfortunately, certain episodes happened with Atalanta fans trying to provoke the suspension of the game. But the problem is not inside the stadiums. The problem is that what happens inside the stadiums is a reflection of our society."

Roma's evening match with Cagliari was called off after the Eternal City club asked for it to be put back out of respect for Sandri, but an angry mob turned up at the Stadio Olimpico.

Hundreds of them, armed with stones and sticks, attacked one of the police units in the vicinity of the stadium before raiding the headquarters of the Italian Olympic Committee, CONI, in Rome. The CONI security guards, who were unarmed, had to barricade themselves inside the building while waiting for back-up.

The incidents come nine months after a policeman, Filippo Raciti, was killed at the Sicilian derby between Catania and Palermo during crowd trouble outside the stadium.

That led to the Italian government severely tightening security with numerous stadiums closed until they made improvements. The government also created an independent body, L'Osservatorio nazionale sulle manifestazione sportive, to clamp down on football violence and gave it powers to call games off or ban fans from attending.

Vincenzo Giacobbe, the head of police at Arezzo where the shooting took place yesterday, confirmed that a man had died and did not deny media reports that the fatal bullet had come from a police weapon.

"This is a tragic mistake," he said. "Our agent had intervened to prevent the fracas between two groups of people – that had not been considered fans – degenerating into a situation with serious consequences for both groups. I express my most profound pain and sincere condolences to the victim's family."

Forensic tests are to be carried out to ascertain whether the bullet had been fired by a police officer. The police made it clear that this was not, in fact, certain.

The Italian Prime Minister, Romano Prodi, expressed his shock over yesterday's events. Prodi was in church when a government aide informed him of the shooting. Prodi said: "These are episodes that increase concern. I was made aware of the situation by the Minister of Interior while I was at mass."

A Lazio spokesman, Giacomo Mazzocchi, said of the incident: "It's shocking and inexplicable. We are still asking ourselves how could something like this have happened. It's a tragedy."

The president of the Italian football federation, Giancarlo Abete, had initially ruled that all games bar the Internazionale-Lazio match should go ahead.

Speaking before the abandonment of the Atalanta-Milan game and ahead of the decision to postpone the evening match between Roma and Cagliari, Abete said: "I would be intellectually dishonest if I said that we had not considered postponing all of today's games. But we believe that we have taken the right decision. The incident has yet to be clarified and it should not create any animosity between the fans and the police because what has happened is not yet clear."

Roma's later request to call off their game against Cagliari was eventually approved with Lazio's city rivals determined not to aggravate already high feelings with their co-tenants at the Olympic stadium.

The club's managing director, Rosella Sensi, said: "It is right to ask for the game to be postponed as a sign of solidarity for the Lazio fans and for the city of Roma hit by the death of Gabriele Sandri."

Hundreds of fans angry over the death of a Lazio supporter raided the headquarters of the Italian Olympic Committee in Rome last night.

Gabriele Sandri, 26, was reportedly shot by police at a motorway service station as they tried to stop a disturbance.

An SS Lazio fan was accidentally shot dead on Sunday while trying to quell a clash with Juventus supporters at a highway rest stop in Tuscany, authorities said.

Outside Rome's Olympic Stadium, hundreds of fans threw firecrackers, set up street barricades and clashed with police. About 10 officers were injured during the riot, ANSA news agency reported.

In Milan, Lazio fans threw rocks at a police station in protest and marched towards the city centre shouting "Assassins!" at security forces. However, the protest subsided in the evening.
