| Pub-goers facing 'Burberry' ban - 20/08/2004
Source : BBC News
Two Leicester pubs have banned drinkers wearing several brands of designer clothing to crack down on violence. The Parody and Varsity have introduced strict clothing rules and banned brands including Stone Island, Aquascutum, Henri Lloyd and Burberry.
The pubs have teamed up with police to compile a list of clothing they believe are worn by groups of youths and football hooligans.
The policy, aimed at "hard core trouble makers", was introduced on 10 August.
Caroline Nodder, spokeswoman for Barracuda, the company which owns Varsity and The Parody, told the Leicester Mercury: "This is not necessarily aimed at football violence. "It is targeting a certain gang of young lads that have been causing concern in the area.
"But if it works to exclude that football element, then so much the better."
Pc Karen Holdridge, from the city centre's violence and disorder team, said the policy was aimed at tackling a hard core of troublemakers.
She said: "Well-known football hooligans have a particular dress code. These people are recognised as coming into the city centre day in, day out and causing trouble."
A spokesman for Henri Lloyd called the ban a "ridiculous prejudice".
He said: "To stereotype and prejudice customers based on their choice of clothing seems ridiculous."
A Burberry spokeswoman said: "It's a very aspirational, cross-generational, cross gender brand and with regard to the Leicester issue, it's clearly a localised issue and to be honest it's actually quite insignificant in the face of the brand's global appeal." _________________

Riot police fought to control football hooligans armed with baseball bats and iron bars in Birmingham after on Sunday. Eight supporters were injured in the clash as more than 50 fans were involved in a confrontation outside the Uplands pub in Oxhill Road, Handsworth, at 5pm. Twelve men, aged between 17 and 45, were arrested in the violence, which police believe was planned before the match. They were still in police custody last night. A police spokesman said more arrests were possible after CCTV footage from the incident had been studied. He said: "A full investigation has been launched into the violence, which seems to have been organised and planned. "We have CCTV footage of what went on and shall be studying it to identify as many supporters as we can." He said battles broke out less than a mile from The Hawthorns stadium where the game was played, with groups of rival fans chasing each other along Oxhill Road, Sandwell Road and Island Road. It took more than 20 riot police half an hour to control the crowds. _________________

| Leeds United - Huddersfield Town - 24/08/04
Source: forums - Leeds view
Fair play to Hudds turning out limited numbers in there cup final and actually coming into leeds centre and "holing" up in Yates. Fact is leeds were about all over when we found out. OB were everywhere, no great result and the offs recorded were definitely a home win. I would never claim a result for taking the day off work and getting in a pub early, I would claim a part result if nobody has a go when they know your there. Something which rarely if ever happens in Leeds or when we travel. _________________

| Leyton Orient - AFC Bournemouth - 24/08/04
Source: forums
15-20 Orient gave two Bournemouth a shoeing walking back to the station, so what little Bournemouth had left (3 firm, 2 Charlton lads and a couple of barmies) went up to have a go. They clocked Orient's mob on the corner and went into them.
Despite Orient being armed with lumps of wood, ash trays, bottles and road signs, and outnumbering AFCB almost 3-1 (very brave boys...), Bournemouth backed them off around the corner until sheer numbers and the amount of weapens meant AFCB were on the back foot. Then Orient legged it claiming OB were on their way. _________________

| Germinal Beerschot - RSC Charleroi - 29/08/2004
Source: mail
Riots between Beerschot fans and Marocs.
Couple of hours after the game soms guys got trouble with Marocs near the stadium. The lads who were still in the boozers around the ground, heard the news and went out on the street. Then the first riot took place. 15 Beerschot fought the same number of Marocs. Few Beerschot armed with belts. A knife and baseballbat on the Maroc-side. Because of the fight, the police ordered to close the pub.
Later that evening a couple of Marocs throw a molotov ah the already closed Beerschot boozer (café Stadion). Some lads were still hanging around in another pub and regrouped in front of café Stadion. At that time, there was just a small amount of cops.
Marocs kept provocing. Beerschot fans couldn't stand it anymore and went down in the streets. With just 20-25 Beerschot attacked at least 50 Marocs. Marocs were all tooled up with wooden sticks, hammers, rocks, stones, bottles,... The usual things for those cowards. Beerschot only used belts and the things that were thrown at us. Marocs had to make a runner a couple of times! Around the time that more police was arriving Beerschot went back in the direction of the pub (Stadion). The police that was present during the riots, acted ok. They just stood behind the Beerschot group to watch our backs. For one time, a small group of coppers was on our side. _________________

| Chinese fans go on rampage - 08/08/2004
Source: The Observer
Riots after defeat by Japan in Asia Cup sparks fears for Beijing Games
Hundreds of Chinese football supporters clashed with riot police outside a Beijing stadium yesterday after their national team was beaten 3-1 by rival Japan in the final of the Asia Cup.
Supporters threw bottles, shouted obscenities, burnt Japanese flags and surrounded the Japanese team bus, which was pelted with missiles and forced to return to the stadium.
During the match, fans booed Japan so loudly they drowned out the Japanese national anthem played at the start of the match. The outbreak of football hooliganism, previously dismissed as a European disease, is a major embarrassment for the Chinese government and raises serious doubts about Beijing's ability to host the 2008 Olympics.
Both governments had pleaded with fans to stay calm ahead of the match and 6,000 riot police, troops and security staff had been deployed to prevent violence.
The Japanese team had been singled out for particular hatred, and the host nation's fury bordered on intimidation normally associated with England fans.
During the quarter final in Chongqing, its team bus was held up by an angry mob of Chinese fans calling for Japanese blood. Japanese supporters have been roughed up and pelted with rubbish. Japan's manager Zico - the former midfield maestro of the Brazilian national team - complained that his players were 'paying for political issues from many years ago'.
By English football supporters' standards, the attacks have been fairly restrained. Nevertheless, the violence has caused a storm in Japan, where it is seen as a sign of the growing threat posed by China. Politicians have expressed outrage, and an editorial in the top-selling Yomiuri newspaper blamed the Chinese government for stirring up nationalism.
The Japanese embassy in Beijing has demanded that China provide greater security for its players and supporters. Even the Prime Minister, Junichiro Koizumi, has stepped into the fray, calling for the hosts not to boo his nation's players.
The battles also reflect major differences in cultures between the two societies. In wealthy Japan, the sport is fashionable among young middle-class men and women. Its national team supporters are famous for being so well mannered they take rubbish bags to clean up their mess.
By contrast, Chinese fans are far rowdier. With corruption among poorly paid players and referees rampant, heckling is part and parcel of the match-day experience. Supporters are more likely to turn up because they want to let off steam rather than to keep up with the latest trends.
However, the fans' barracking has clearly touched a nerve in Japan, which is also experiencing a rise in nationalist sentiment. At earlier matches in the tournament, Chinese protesters inside the stadium had held up banners calling on Tokyo to make amends for wartime atrocities. 'Look at history and apologise to the people of Asia,' read one. One group of fans clustered round a ringleader who shouted: 'Kill the Japanese'.
Another banner read, 'Return the Diaoyutai Islands' - a reference to a sovereignty dispute over a chain of islands - known as Senkakushima in Japan - which are believed to hold oil deposits.
The Chinese still resent Japan's invasion and occupation of parts of their country from 1931 to 1945, when tens of millions died. Heavily restricted from criticising their own government, the Chinese media have had far more freedom to report on Japanese wrongs - real and imagined - which have only added to the hostility directed at the Japanese.
Such displays of hostility have coincided with a chilling of diplomatic relations. Beijing is unhappy that Japan has cut its aid budget to China - which is seen as a de facto compensation for the war.
The hostility has also helped to draw big crowds to Japan's matches, even though only a tenth of the expected number of their supporters braved the trip to China. While many other nations have played in half-empty stadiums, Japan's opponents have enjoyed the support of sell-out crowds.
After China won their semi-final with a penalty shoot-out, the nation buzzed with anticipation of a final in which a lot more than football was at stake. One Shanghai television station declared: 'It is going to be a war.' _________________

| Football fan's Euro travelling ban - 16/08/2005
Source: This is Lancashire
A 28-year-old man from Bolton has been banned from travelling to watch the England football team's friendly match against Denmark.
The man, from the Astley Bridge area, was stopped by police at Manchester Airport on Monday as part of an operation that targets known and potential trouble makers from travelling to England matches.
He appeared at Manchester City Magistrates Court when officers started proceedings to gain a banning order against him.
The hearing was adjourned until Tuesday, September 20. In the meantime, he is barred from leaving England or Wales.
England play in Denmark on Wednesday as part of their preparation for a number of World Cup qualifying games in the coming months.
Plain clothes and uniformed police officers have been stationed in airport terminals across the country as part of Operation Springfield.
As well as checking direct flights to Denmark, officers have been monitoring all routes available to travelling fans.
Greater Manchester Police has mounted similar operations in the past, including the screening of more than 1,500 fans travelling to the Euro 2004 Championships.
Police say the vast majority of people checked are genuine supporters who are co-operative and understanding but that officers have stopped a number of known hooligans from travelling.
Chief Inspector Martin Gaffney, who is based at Manchester Airport, said: "There is a very clear message to those people who are going to be travelling for the wrong reasons. We will be vigorously enforcing banning orders and working to identify those we believe are travelling to engage in violence and disorder."
People with banning orders have received letters in advance of the games reminding them of the conditions imposed on them - including surrendering their passport and attending their nearest police station on the day of the games. _________________

Source: This is Lancashire
FOOTBALL hooligans intent on causing trouble in Bury can soon expect to find themselves in court.
A new national policy outlined by the Association of Chief Police Officers and the Crown Prosecution Service recommends that all offenders arrested at football matches across England and Wales should be prosecuted wherever possible.
Now Greater Manchester Police, in conjunction with Greater Manchester Crown Prosecution Service, will prosecute all offenders and apply for Football Banning Orders during the forthcoming football season. _________________

| Portsmouth: Home checks on banned soccer yobs - 04/04/2004
Source: http://www.portsmouth.co.uk
POLICE will be knocking on the doors of banned soccer yobs to make sure they are at home during the football season. Any of the thugs caught away from their home in the hours before and after league and cup matches will be arrested and could face up to six months in prison.
A total of 80 people are banned from going to football grounds after they caused trouble at home or away Pompey matches.
Police have called on any fans who spot banned thugs at games – or who learn that offenders are planning to go to games – to shop the troublemakers so they can be dealt with by police.
Officers from the force's football intelligence unit in Southsea will spend Pompey matchdays visiting the addresses of banned yobs – armed with pictures of the offenders to make sure they can confirm the blacklisted people are where they should be.
Hampshire's chief constable Paul Kernaghan praised the 'bravery and professional performance' of six Thames Valley Police officers seconded to the force to help out on March 21.
Sergeant John Thurston and PCs Louisa Watson, Kirsty Bishop, Dave James, Chris Winks and Jack Frost were all commended – along with their horses – for their actions in battles after the Portsmouth versus Southampton game.

Football thugs run riot
Terrified residents today described the horrifying violence which turned their neighbourhood into a warzone after the Villa-Albion derby.
More than 80 thugs rampaged through the streets in a running battle, before riot police managed to regain control.
One local woman, who did not wish to be named for fear of retribution said: "I saw rocks and stones on the road, riot police everywhere and youths running into the allotments. I was terrified. This is a peaceful neighbourhood, especially on a Sunday."
Another resident said: "I have lived here for five years and this has never happened before. It's shocking."
A pensioner said: "They were really going for it for about half an hour to an hour, it was really bad. There was no reason for people to act like that.
"There were a lot of police cars and police in riot gear everywhere, and there was a helicopter going overhead."
The arrested fans, aged between 17 and 46, were detained overnight and were today being questioned by detectives from Thornhill Road police station in Handsworth.
A West Midlands Police spokesman said that a large group of fans had been involved in serious disturbances outside the Uplands pub between 5 and 5.30pm.
"We made 12 arrests, all men from different parts of the West Midlands.
"They were all kept in custody overnight and are being questioned this morning about the incidents.
"A full investigation has been launched into the violence, which seems to have been organised and planned.
"We have CCTV footage of what went on and shall be studying that to identify as many supporters as we can.
"No-one has yet been charged but we are determined to stamp out this sort of violence and make sure that the vast majority of law-abiding football fans can enjoy games without fear of any problems."
Match commander Ch Supt Paul Scarrott, of Sandwell North police, said that there had only been three arrests before and immediately after the match and the game itself, which ended 1-1, had gone off peacefully.
"The three men we arrested will be taken to court for public disorder offences and there were very few problems centred on the game.
"It appears there was pre-arranged violence some hours after the final whistle but from a match commander viewpoint things went well."
