St Mirren - Hibernian - 05/08/2024
Source : The Sun
Shocking scenes as hooligans start new SPFL season with a BRAWL in Paisley as St Mirren faced Hibs It was the second unsavoury incident of a season that's just two days old.
RIVAL football hooligans kicked off as the new 2024-25 league season began in the SPFL.
St Mirren defeated Hibs 3-0 on Sunday in Paisley, but the victory was marred with trouble outside the SMiSA Stadium at full-time.
Footage captured and shared on social media saw violent clashes on Ferguslie Park Avenue adjacent to the away end of the ground.
The shock scenes were a stark contrast from the colourful display just days earlier when the Buddies hosted Valur in the Uefa Europa Conference League.
On Thursday night thousands of Saints fans marched from the town centre to the ground ahead of the game which Stephen Robinson's side won 4-1 to progress into the next stage of qualifying.
But the view was very different on Sunday as two opposing groups - both clad in black, many with their faces covered - brawled outside the club's car park entrance.
Punches were thrown and kicks aimed during the ugly scenes involving a significant number of hooligans.
Bottles were thrown and one of the warring factions can even be seen carrying a large pole which resembled a CAR PARK BARRIER as the groups collided.
In the footage shared officers from a single police car tried to main order as other peaceful fans watched on in horror as they made their way home at full-time.
They were later joined by a police van as the stadium emptied into the fracas.
"A 17-year-old male youth was arrested and charged in connection with the incident. He is due to appear at court at a later date."
Sunsport approached both Hibs and St Mirren for comment.
The Buddies said: "This is an ongoing police matter that we will assist with where possible.
"St Mirren is committed to making the matchday experience enjoyable for all that visit The SMiSA Stadium.
"The club has invested a lot of time and research into ensuring that we are inclusive to all and last season launched our ‘Everyone is Welcome, We’re all Buddies’ campaign.”
Sunday's ugly scenes came 24 hours after fellow SPFL rivals Rangers launched an investigation into a sick banner display at Tynecastle.
A flag was spotted hung in the away end of the Edinburgh ground for Saturday's Premiership curtain-raiser with Hearts.
It depicted a 'Totenkopf' symbol - linked to the Nazi SS Panzer Division which committed atrocities in WW2 - and the club badge.
The blue and white flag also carried the phrases 'No Surrender' and 'Expand or Perish' - a phrase linked to Italy's fascist leader Mussolini.
Gers officials immediately launched an investigation into the banner - which bore similarities to another spotted at Ibrox last season and widely condemned by the fanbase and club.
