A Copa Libertadores tie between Atlético Mineiro and San Lorenzo descended into violence on Tuesday as riot police burst into the stands.

San Lorenzo supporters had traveled to Brazil for the second leg of the Round of 16 clash, only to see their team eliminated after falling to a 2-1 aggregate defeat. During the game, dozens of police officers stormed the area housing San Lorenzo fans and forcibly cleared a portion of the stands.

Police were wearing stab vest, helmets and riot shields. Many appeared to be using batons and carrying rifles. Reports suggest that pepper spray was used to move fans from the area.

Smoke bombs parachuted into the football stadium during the Caen-Paris match

A few smoke bombs were catapulted from outside the Stade d’Ornano in Caen, Saturday August 17, 2024, during the SM Caen – Paris FC football match. The police have opened an investigation.

Was it an “animation” imagined by supporters or more certainly the expression of the discontent of some against the broadcast of matches on Friday evening, instead of Saturday? During the Ligue 2 football match between the Stade Malherbe de Caen and the Paris Football club, Saturday afternoon, smoke bombs were sent from outside the Ornano stadium and landed in the enclosure thanks to mini -parachutes.

No injuries, but the projectiles, two or three in number according to witnesses, at least one landed on the stadium lawn.

The national police arrested two supporters, suspected of having participated in this action.

Antwerp ultras face up to ten-year stadium ban over flares

In Belgium, matches also take place in the stands.

Two weeks after some Bruges fans made Nazi salutes in the Liège stadium, another incident disrupted the match between Club Brugge and Royal Antwerp, two great Pro League rivals, on Sunday. In the dying minutes of the game, with the home side leading 1-0, Antwerp fans set off flares, some of which landed in the Brugge KOP below the visitors' stand. According to Belgian media outlet Walfoot, two people were injured. The perpetrators could face a stadium ban of up to ten years.

Penalties could also be imposed on the Antwerp club. They could face a fine and the threat of an empty stand for their next three away games. Under the new rule, if a match has to be interrupted, the club faces three away games without supporters. ‘The safety of fans and players has been compromised and this must be punished,’ said Pro League chairman Lorin Parys. The problem was that the incident occurred just as an Antwerp player had picked up a red card. The authorities will now look into whether the match was interrupted because of the red card or because of the incident in the stands.

Club Brugge reacts to the deplorable behaviour of some of its supporters at Standard.

Club Brugge lost 1-0 at Standard. A group of Brugge supporters were just as inspired in the stands as the Blauw en Zwart players on the pitch.

For the first match of the season at Sclessin, Standard wanted to strike hard with an action against racism, mobilising a large number of extras on the pitch at kick-off.

Far from honouring the values of tolerance and respect, a number of the Club's supporters were involved in a very sad display.

During the match, some of the visiting fans performed the Kuhnen salute, an alternative used to get round the prohibition on Nazi salutes.

A forthcoming investigation
Club Brugge issued an initial statement on its social networks: "We have received a photo via various channels of particularly inappropriate behaviour on the part of the away section. The Club stresses that it is taking this matter very seriously and will continue its investigation. Further communications will follow as more information becomes available.

A second press release soon followed: the Blauw en Zwart will be "actively collaborating with the police to identify the supporters and then punish them to the best of its ability. The club stresses that there is "no place for racism within the Blauw en Zwart family".
